WELCOME
Keenan Productions and Events would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone
attending the sixth annual Dressage Affaire. We are pleased to present this competition
as a CDI3*YJ and a CPEDI3*! Whether you are a Spectator, Sponsor, Volunteer or
Competitor, you each contribute to the success of this event! KP Events originated for the
sole purpose of offering you a World Class Event at a venue that strives for perfection in
atmosphere, equine comfort, and footing. Putting on a CDI competition is a monumental
task and could not have been done without the support of our incredible Sponsors. I
greatly appreciate their confidence in my vision. I would like to thank our top riders for
their support in the quest to raise these funds and to our vendors who help create a festive
ambiance as well as provide an excellent shopping experience! Our staff will prove to be
worth their weight in gold and our volunteers undeniably make this competition possible.
We have a fabulous panel of Officials that one can meet and get to know in the following
pages. The importance of the CDI competition has increased as it was decided in 2009
that only CDI competitions may act as qualifiers for National Grand Prix Championships.
This is why it became crucial to offer this competition, so that our riders are given every
opportunity to succeed in their quests for success! However, that does not mean that KP
Events is only interested in this level of Competition. KP Events has always catered to the
large audience of Amateur riders that deserve a top quality experience as well. KP Events
offers a total show experience full of social gatherings, special treats for horse and rider, as
well as fabulous prizes and care to each participant individually.
I do hope you enjoy your experience with us! If you have any questions, concerns, or
compliments please look for me on the grounds and let me know or if you have an event
you would like help with just let me know!
KP Events strives for perfection in every way!
Sincerely,
Kim Keenan Stordahl
WHAT IS [DRESSAGE]?
Dressage, pronounced dress aahj, is the French word for training. Mere words do not
describe the beauty of this art form. It is the most disciplined of the equestrian sports. It is
a refined, harmonious, silent conversation between horse and rider resulting in aids given by
rider to the horse which should not be apparent to the observer’s eye.
The graceful and controlled movements exhibited by the horses and riders you will observe
today, have been practiced as far back in time as the depictions on the bas relief frieze around
the Parthenon in Athens, Greece.
These precise athletic movements can only be achieved when the rider, through his seat and
leg, is able to compress the horse (known as collection). This makes the horse balanced and
light on his feet and responsive to the rider’s aids.
It takes many years of training to develop the Grand Prix horse and rider. Additional demands
of perfection, muscular development and balance are needed in order for a horse to
execute the required gaits at the Grand Prix level.
Not every horse can do the canter pirouette, piaffe and passage. The horse must have not
only the physical talent, but the willingness to accept more rigorous training.
Even when a horse is able to execute the compulsory movements, there will always be a rare
few who will perform the tasks with precision, agility and expression. That ability is what
makes champions.
The musical Freestyle, referred to as a “kur” or “Kuer,” affords the rider the opportunity to
perform all the compulsory movements of the test in any desired sequence and at any point
in the arena, to the music of the rider’s choice. This adds an exciting element of artistic
expression that enhances the pleasure of the performance.
A winning “kur” will summon the ability of both horse and rider to execute more difficult
sequential movements than those of the actual Grand Prix test. Merely setting the test to
music will not create the champion. The scoring includes marks for both technical execution
and artistic presentation.
We have added more information throughout this program to help you reach a better understanding
of the beautiful sport of dressage.
Thank you for joining us!
ABOUT [Para-Equestrian]
Para-Equestrian, sport includes all equestrian disciplines practiced by people with physical
disabilities. “Para” means, parallel to able-bodied equestrian sports. Many disabled athletes
are able to hold their ground in competitions designed for the able-bodied, but Para-
Equestrian opens the world of competition to riders and drivers with severe disabilities
as well, allowing them to compete in a serious, focused environment. Many athletes who
participate in Para-Equestrian are quite talented, and some are considered to be among the
elite equestrians of the world, regardless of their physical condition.
In Para-Equestrian, each rider or driver is classified according to his or her functional ability.
Para-Equestrians are assessed by trained physiotherapists and doctors who evaluate either
muscle strength, coordination, or a combination thereof throughout the athlete’s body. The
athlete is then given a functional profile that indicates the grade in which they can compete.
The competition within each grade is judged on the functional skill of the rider or driver and
not the level of disability.
The primary focus of the Para-Equestrian programs are to provide clinic and competition
opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities. Many of our Para-Equestrian athletes
were first introduced to horses through their therapeutic riding programs. The therapy
program objectives are to introduce riding to improve balance, joint mobility, coordination,
muscle tone and posture to ease symptoms of a wide variety of disabilities. It is a well know
fact that horse’s gaits parallel that of the human.
What makes Para-Equestrian so special is that a person with a disability can compete in an
exciting and well respected sport as an elite athlete and be judged on their abilities. Some of
our best Para-Equestrians compete at the highest level, the Paralympics. The Paralympics,
not to be confused with Special Olympics, is an elite sporting event for athletes with physical
disabilities. Currently, the only Para-Equestrian sport recognized at the Paralympic level is
Para-Dressage.
Para-Equestrian is the eighth discipline within the United States Equestrian Federation. Para-
Dressage is considered a High Performance Sport, therefor subject to the USEF selection
criteria standards. All Para-Dressage riders must meet the strict show standards prior to
being considered eligible to compete at a selection trial. After applying the selection criteria,
considering the horse and rider combinations, their rankings and scores at the trials, a team
is selected.
What does Olympic gold mean to athletes who have more to prove than just sporting ability?
For starters, it takes a lot of money to support this sport. The most successful countries
fund athletes’ living expenses through lotteries, heavy endowment funds, and corporate
sponsorships so that they can concentrate on their job: riding for medals. In turn, medals
won bring more funding, credibility, and respect.
Although the US Olympic Committee provides some funding to our Paralympic equestrians,
it does not compare to that received by our competition. Our Paralympians’ stories are much
different from those of their able-bodied equestrian peers because it takes more of a support
team to handle the day-to-day horse care and training. Para-Equestrians generally cannot
supplement their expenses by training or coaching, so most of our athletes have full-time
careers apart from horses.
WHAT TO [LOOK FOR IN A TEST]
The judge looks to see that the horse is willing, relaxed, supple, fluid and attentive
at all times during the test. Any show of resistance, tension or stiffness is penalized.
The horse should appear to perform the movements of his own volition, with no
obvious prompting from the rider.
THE [MOVEMENTS]
Collection – Second Level
The horse shortens his frame and stride, becoming more elevated with increased
suspension between steps.
Shoulder In – Second Level
The horse is slightly bent around the inside leg of the rider, and its inside leg passes
and crosses in front of the outside leg. The horse is looking away from the direction
it’s moving.
Halt
The halt must be square and completely immobile.
Walk
The walk should be a cadenced, four-beat gait with no shuffling or jogging.
Rein-Back
A backward movement where the horse should step evenly with front and hind legs
a specific number of steps.
Extended Gait – Third Level
The horse stretches his legs and body to lengthen the stride, maintaining the same
rhythm.
Half-Pass – Third Level
The horse moves obliquely or diagonally forward. The horse should be very
straight with neither the hindquarters nor the shoulders leading.
Flying Changes – Third Level
When a horse canters, the inside front leg lands last in every stride, notably farther
ahead of the other three legs.
the Winterstern Memorial
This award is given to honor Winterstern, (1990-2006). This wonderful horse porvided
me the opportunity to ride competitively as an Amatuer at all FEI levels with
total enjoyment. The most cherished successes I garnered came from the wonder
of the partnership, the fun, and the sense of accomplishment a generously talented
horse allows his rider. “Georgie” as he was known to those who knew him best, was
full of playful curiousity in all aspects of his life. The show ring was just another
place for fun. Thoughts of him provide smiles for me daily. May this award bring
it’s winner smiles in “Georgie’s” memory.
HOW IS [DRESSAGE TESTED]?
Dressage competition takes place in a low 22 x 66 yard rectangular arena. It is marked by
12 lettered points around its circumference. There are five imaginary lettered points down
center line, and five down each quarter line.
Movements are expected to be performed EXACTLY where specified by each particular test,
and marks from 0 to 10 are awarded for each movement and for each transition between
movements.
A halt, for example, must be executed in a square; changes of gaits must be smooth transitions;
circles must be round; a diagonal movement from one letter to another must be
straight.
Rhythm, relaxation, contact, straightness, impulsion and collection are six major dressage
guidelines that the judges are looking for.
Scores for especially difficult movements are multiplied by 2, as are the collective marks for
the rider’s seat, position, and application of aids.
Marks are totaled for official placings and then converted to a percentage, making it possible
to compare scores from class to class, level to level, and competition to competition.
WHO IS [SEATED WITH THE JUDGE]?
Have you wondered who that person is seated with the judge? This is the scribe. The scribe
records the score for each movement and comments made by the judge during the test.
Scribing is often a sought after volunteer position. A scribe starts at the lower levels to gain
the experiences needed to scribe at the FEI levels and the more complicated
musical freestyle tests.
WHAT ARE [THE LETTERS]?
No one has the answer. Many judges have been queried; many books have been consulted.
There seems to be no explanation for the selection or the placement of the letters!
the Neapolitano Amour Trophy
Neapolitano Amour is the bay part-bred Lipizzan mare owned by Alice Knox of La Jolla,
California. Purchased in 1982 as a lesson horse for children, “Amour” soon found her way
to the show ring in southern California breed shows. Shown under saddle and inhand,
Amour was undefeated except for just once, when she was reserve champion. In 1992, she
retired from the show ring at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, where she won her final
championship.
After being accepted in the Pre-Mare book of the ISR/Oldenburg North America Registry,
Amour was bred to First Class (Furioso II), and produced the chestnut Premium Foal
“Giverny” in 1993. Giverny went on to earn Premium Mare status, and was a CDS Horse
of the Year in 1998 under Yves LeFay, winning the Shelly Siegel Memorial Trophy. Amour
was bred back to First Class, and in 1995, delivered another chestnut filly, “Innsbruck”.
Innsbruck was later entered into the ISR/Oldenburg N.A. Main Mare Book, and under
the exclusive guidance of Jeremy Steinberg, she became a top competition horse. In 2003,
Innsbruck was the Second Level Open Champion at Dressage at Pebble Beach, winning the
Dominique LeGrand List Memorial Trophy. And in 2006, she earned a Star Award from
ISR/Oldenburg N.A. for her consistent success in the dressage ring.
Amour is now 32 years old – healthy and spry - and lives with her daughters in Rancho
Santa Fe. Her granddaughter, Hanalei (Rousseau x Giverny) was born last spring. The
Neapolitano Amour Perpetual Trophy is donated in her honor to the Dressage Affaire
Second Level Open Champion.
THE DÉJÀ VU [MEMORIAL AWARD]
“In Loving Memory of a World Class Horse”
How do you say goodbye to a creature that is so noble, so
grand, and so giving? Our horses are our dance partners,
without them there is no sport. With them we create music,
harmony … beauty.
On September 19, 1994, my Déjà vu was put down to end
his pain. In July of 1993, at the Olympic Sports Festival, he was
going the best of his life. Four days before competition began,
he came up severely lame. Once home, we found out that he
tore cartilage in his stifle. He was operated on one month later,
the torn cartilage flap had to be removed, leaving him with no
cartilage in that area. We could only hope that the fibro-cartilage
that would form in the area would be dense enough to give him
the cushion he needed to be pain-free, since there was no joint
replacement available for a horse’s stifle. We used every modality,
injection, and additive that was available to aid in the growth of
fibro-cartilage. Over a year later we were faced with a decision
I had never faced before. He could not walk without limping
severly. He was in pain, both physically and mentally. He had
always loved to work and now could only watch me on Dutch
Treat. He called to us all day and night if he thought he heard us
coming out of the house.
DJ was a tremendous athlete. He was cocky and proud like
a stallion, but loving and cute like a baby. He loved the show
ring. We were preparing our debut in Grand Prix in 1994. He
was my dance partner, like no other I’d had before. He carried
me through our “waltzes” with grandeur. Without him I have
felt lost. I have no partner: I can’t dance.
Through tragedy I have grown, and have found a stronger
nucleus of caring, love and support from my parents, family
and friends. It has helped me to remain positive and continue
striving for my goals, equestrian or otherwise. I miss DJ tremendously.
He was buried north of Santa Barbara, on a hillside
overlooking the ocean. We thought this was fitting. He lived
with dignity and he died with dignity. This letter is in memory
of DJ and all the other special partners that have been lost.
