Using the Energy of the Sun
Becker-Antriebe offers solar kit for roller shutter operation
There are numerous places where no mains power
is available – for example in some summerhouses.
Sometimes it might also be very difficult to lay a power line
to a window, for example. Becker-Antriebe now offers the
roller shutter solar kit RSS241 to ensure that roller shutters
can still be operated electrically in such situations.
The full package consists of a roller shutter drive, a control
unit, a solar panel, a handheld transmitter and a rechargeable
battery pack. “We decided to develop this kit following
suggestions from specialist dealers and some of our end
customers,” explains Patrick Happ, a product manager at
Becker-Antriebe. The German company produces drives and
control units for roller shutters and sun protection systems.
Energy from the sun instead of electrical power
At the heart of the system is a 12 V DC drive that produces
a torque of 6 Nm and an output speed of 20 rpm. The solar
panel is installed on the outside of the building and the control
unit indoors near the window. The panel, control unit
and drive are interconnected via a special T-cable. The roller
shutter can then be operated via the button on the control
unit or via the supplied radio handheld transmitter – without
the need for a mains supply.
Weathering protection
The key aspects of the system are reliability and suitability for everyday use.
The solar panel is therefore fixed to the outside of the building to ensure it
can be aligned for maximum exposure to the sun. In contrast, the rechargeable
battery pack is deliberately located inside the control unit housing and

thus indoors. “This ensures that it is not exposed to the elements or extreme
temperatures, which could impair its performance and service life,” claims
the product manager.
Reliable – even on cloudy days
The rechargeable battery pack is able to store sufficient energy to power a
roller shutter on cloudy days. A fully charged battery is capable of opening
and closing a roller shutter more than one hundred times without any sunlight.
The rechargeable battery pack can of course be replaced or recharged
via a standard DC power supply unit.
A member of the Centronic family
Even though the system is not operated with mains power it is still a fullyfledged
member of the Becker Centronic family. “If desired, the drive can be
simply controlled and programmed using an existing multi-channel transmitter
of the Centronic family,” says Patrick Happ. The kit can also be integrated
into a Becker home automation system. It is therefore a wonderful
addition to the Becker-Antriebe product range, which lives up to the motto:
“Together it’s easier.”
