YOUTHEXCHANGE
Rotary International District 9800
newsletter for youth exchange 2012-2013
http://www.rotaryyouthexchangeaustralia.com.au/
Thank you! . . .
. . . to District 9800 Rotary Clubs who have given us the opportunity of a
lifetime - to live in Australia for 12 months, for sharing your homes with
us and allowing us to be a part of your Club. We shall never forget you.
Inbound Rotary Youth Exchange Students from Districts 9800 and 9780 on Safari at The Olgas, Central Australia.
Not Hosting an Inbound Student?
. . . it may be easier than you think.
My Club doesn’t have any Host Families.
Look beyond the club for Host Families, such as friends, relatives, school
and community members. The Youth Exchange Committee is
developing a database of Rotary approved Host Families to offer your
club, if needed.
My Club is too small to Host a student.
Clubs with a small membership have successfully hosted and in some
cases, this has resulted in gaining new Rotarians from their local
community.
Our Club members are too old.
Having an Exchange Student can rejuvenate a club and give members a
new focus. Successful Host Families are often Grandparents.
My Club cannot afford this program.
Include Rotary Youth Exchange in your budget for 2013-2014; a
minimum of $3,500 will cover school uniforms, pocket money, travel
expenses, District Conference attendance and incidentals. Seek
assistance from another club in your cluster to Co-Host.
Hosting is too much trouble, what does the Host Family gain?
Satisfaction and a life long connection with another family and
community in the world, due to this Rotary Service. Host Families share
daily life with a student and help them shape their perceptions of
Australian culture.
Involving your club with Youth Exchange is an opportunity to
immerse a young person in Rotary for 12 months - you may be
nurturing a future Rotary Leader!
Not Sponsoring an Outbound Student?
. . . it may be easier than you think.
It’s too hard to find an eligible Outbound applicant to represent
my club.
Use provided Youth Exchange pamphlets and promote the program at
local schools, community organisations and sporting clubs. Ask the
Youth Exchange Committee or a former Rotary Youth Exchange student
to assist you.
My Club has never sponsored an Outbound Student before, what is
the financial and time commitment?
Minimal or nil costs are involved with sponsoring a student. Your Club
appoints a Student Counsellor to assist and liaise with your student
during their preparation and whilst on exchange.
Abroad’ at our website: newsletter
A Message of Thanks From An Inbound
Youth Exchange Student
Zsófi Szabó, pictured second
from right at D9800’s District
Conference in Albury, delivered
the address below at the Blazer
Presentation Dinner for
Outbound Students at
International House on
December 2nd 2012; the
presentation was a message of
gratitude on behalf of all
Inbound Students to the
District, Host Clubs and
Families.
My name is Zsófi and I’m an Inbound
Exchange Student from Hungary. I got the
amazing opportunity to spend my exchange
year in Australia, in the District 9800 with 16
other students from all over the world. We
Inbounds have been here for around 4 months
now, and I am speaking for all of us when I
say, we have already learnt important things
about the world, family, friendship and about
ourselves.
When we came on exchange we crossed
our borders. Not just physically but also
mentally. We left everything behind, everything
we knew, to start a new life on the other side of
the world. And it was the best decision a
person could ever make.
In Australia, we are experiencing a new
culture, using a new language and making new
friends for a lifetime. But most importantly:
we’re learning to manage challenges, learning
what it means to be lucky and learning more
4
things in one day than we ever thought
possible.
As I mentioned we all had to face
challenges. The first days were the hardest. On
the first morning I didn’t know when to get out
of bed, who to talk to, where to sit and what
to talk about. I didn’t even know which is the
right side of the car and the road because it’s
the total opposite in Europe.
Initially, you are always out of your comfort
zone. But this will change. Now everything
has changed for me. It has only been 4 months
and I already feel much more self confident,
independent, decisive, tolerant and have a
greater life perspective and it is all thanks to
Rotary. I feel I have grown up here and I
know that I am not alone in this. So on behalf
of all of the Inbound Exchange Students I
would like to thank Rotary District 9800 for
the opportunity of Youth Exchange.
