Dr.Hoda Issa, child psychologist: ‘These youngsters knew frighten<strong>in</strong>g times.’ Traumatised, <strong>the</strong>y reveal <strong>the</strong>ir anxieties through <strong>the</strong>ir draw<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

free breakfast and c<strong>of</strong>fee to <strong>the</strong> elderly<br />

<strong>in</strong>habitants and has been so successful<br />

that two more have been set up.<br />

They serve 60 square kilometres around<br />

Roum, and are run by two groups from<br />

Sidon, staff and volunteers who care for<br />

an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly age<strong>in</strong>g population (by<br />

2020, 60% <strong>of</strong> Lebanese will be over 65).<br />

‘Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> elderly are women, 75% are<br />

Christian, <strong>the</strong> rest Muslim. Inflation is<br />

runn<strong>in</strong>g at about 60%; <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> fuel<br />

rose by 60% <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last eighteen<br />

months,’ says volunteer Tania Haddad.<br />

There is no government support for<br />

<strong>the</strong>se needy groups.<br />

As <strong>the</strong> car snakes back down <strong>the</strong><br />

mounta<strong>in</strong> through Roum, along its<br />

skyl<strong>in</strong>e are pr<strong>of</strong>iled a huddle <strong>of</strong> ro<strong>of</strong><br />

tops, <strong>the</strong> famed cedars <strong>of</strong> Lebanon, a<br />

church spire and <strong>the</strong> dome <strong>of</strong> a mosque.<br />

Next stop is Bhannès, north east <strong>of</strong><br />

Beirut. The Centre has two special<br />

concerns supported by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Order</strong> – a<br />

balneo-<strong>the</strong>rapy centre for disabled<br />

adults and a home for disabled children.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> former is Jean-Marie, a French<br />

physio<strong>the</strong>rapist who, on visit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Centre some years ago, was so <strong>in</strong>spired<br />

that he sold up everyth<strong>in</strong>g and has come<br />

to live and work here. The focal po<strong>in</strong>t is<br />

<strong>the</strong> swimm<strong>in</strong>g pool for hydro<strong>the</strong>rapy, a<br />

donation from <strong>the</strong> Lebanese Association,<br />

Ordre de Malte France and <strong>the</strong><br />

European Union.<br />

Sr. Marie-Geneviève takes us around <strong>the</strong><br />

well appo<strong>in</strong>ted establishment for <strong>the</strong><br />

young disabled. They are cared for with<br />

love and commitment by <strong>the</strong> sisters and<br />

<strong>the</strong> medical and support staff.<br />

The Centre <strong>of</strong>fers as many possibilities<br />

for development – mental, physical, and<br />

<strong>in</strong>terests such as art, music, computers,<br />

languages – as <strong>the</strong>y can manage.<br />

The children are full <strong>of</strong> joy and as we<br />

meet <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>ir faces light up. All<br />

except Leila, a dim<strong>in</strong>utive four-year-old<br />

with huge rais<strong>in</strong> eyes and s<strong>of</strong>t curly hair,<br />

who shr<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>in</strong>to a corner. Her special<br />

needs teacher expla<strong>in</strong>s that she is very<br />

sad because she realises her mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

doesn’t love her. ‘She is <strong>in</strong>consolable,’<br />

he says.<br />

Arriv<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> five, all must leave<br />

at 16, mak<strong>in</strong>g way for o<strong>the</strong>rs, return<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong>ir poor neighbourhoods, with<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g to do and no hope <strong>of</strong> employment.<br />

Many fall <strong>in</strong>to deep depression.<br />

There are no compensatory social<br />

services <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country for this age group.<br />

We visit some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> classes and f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

Issa, three, born without arms, us<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

feet to lift a bottle <strong>of</strong> water to dr<strong>in</strong>k with<br />

great dexterity, amid applause from <strong>the</strong><br />

visitors. And <strong>the</strong>n Samer, 15, who can<br />

work on a computer and proudly<br />

completes arithmetical problems onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

without help. On leav<strong>in</strong>g this sett<strong>in</strong>g full<br />

<strong>of</strong> light and love, Sr. Genevieve quotes<br />

Anto<strong>in</strong>e de Sa<strong>in</strong>t-Exupéry: ‘With joy,<br />

<strong>the</strong> more that is given, <strong>the</strong> more it<br />

multiplies!’<br />
