The Yellowstone Center for
Natural Resources needed a
current measurement instrument
that was portable enough to fit in
a backpack, readable in bright
daylight, capable of internal
recordings, and able to withstand
high temperatures found in
hot springs.
In August 2001, SonTek
demonstrated the capabilities of
its FlowTracker Handheld ADV
for this particular application.
The ADV probe was positioned
in several different sections of a
spring. Because of the shallow
water, usually only one velocity
measurement was possible in
a cross-section.
Official observers were intrigued
by FlowTracker’s ability to
output two-dimensional velocity,
water temperature, and reflected
echo intensity to its LCD screen.
The demonstration was a success.
The standard for current and wave
measurement is designed for mounting on
the bottom of any river, channel, or harbor.

The SonTek RiverCAT System
The RiverCAT is the world’s first turnkey river
profiler. The integrated river discharge
measurement system comes complete with
catamaran, GPS interface, and radio modem
interface. It utilizes SonTek’s popular
RiverSurveyor mini-ADP system.

Adventurous personnel from
Idaho Power Company and
SonTek braved the Snake
River’s Class IV rapids to make
RiverCAT discharge measurements
at the Johnson Bar gauging
station, 18 miles downstream
from the Hell’s Canyon Hydroelectric
Dam.
As part of a strategic effort to
improve the existing stagedischarge
rating at Johnson Bar,
Idaho Power Company came
up with the ingenious idea to
attach a RiverCAT to a hardshell
kayak. The kayak was then
paddled across the Snake River
for quick, accurate discharge
measurements.
Their resourceful plan proved
highly effective, and the reults
of the measurements were
excellent. As a bonus, their
creativity eliminated the need
to navigate high-powered jet
boats to the site solely for the
purpose of transecting a
profiler across the river.

The principle sources of fresh
water to this North Carolina Sound—
the Neuse, Tar-Pamlico, and
Chowan Rivers—are severely
stressed by anthropogenic nutrient
loading. The consequent perturbation
has resulted in the decline of its
fishery, which has been
documented for two decades
and coincides with accelerated
land-use changes in tributary
watersheds and increased
nutrient loading.

Field Buoy 2
Two biological oceanographers,
Joe Ramus and Hans Paerl,
investigated a way to utilize the
NC-DOT’s ferries that traverse
Pamlico Sound many times each
day. After much research, Ramus
contacted Endeco/YSI to learn
more about the 6200 DAS and,
soon after, designed a 6200-
based water quality monitoring
system mounted to the ferries.

This Environmental Monitoring Module provides
550 lbs. of buoyancy for monitoring in lakes, rivers,
and coastal areas. The redesigned 550 buoy has
more freeboard and greater load capacity so more
equipment can be stowed safely on board. The
increased height of our new stainless steel tripod
allows the 550 to incorporate larger solar panels
and a higher antenna for better communications.
