The Yellowstone Center for<br />
Natural Resources needed a<br />
current measurement instrument<br />
that was portable enough to fit in<br />
a backpack, readable in bright<br />
daylight, capable of internal<br />
recordings, and able to withstand<br />
high temperatures found in<br />
hot springs.<br />
In August 2001, SonTek<br />
demonstrated the capabilities of<br />
its FlowTracker Handheld ADV<br />
for this particular application.<br />
The ADV probe was positioned<br />
in several different sections of a<br />
spring. Because of the shallow<br />
water, usually only one velocity<br />
measurement was possible in<br />
a cross-section.<br />
Official observers were intrigued<br />
by FlowTracker’s ability to<br />
output two-dimensional velocity,<br />
water temperature, and reflected<br />
echo intensity to its LCD screen.<br />
The demonstration was a success.<br />
The standard for current and wave<br />
measurement is designed for mounting on<br />
the bottom of any river, channel, or harbor.<br />

Adventurous personnel from<br />

SonTek braved the Snake<br />
River’s Class IV rapids to make<br />
RiverCAT discharge measurements<br />
at the Johnson Bar gauging<br />
station, 18 miles downstream<br />
from the Hell’s Canyon Hydroelectric<br />
Dam.<br />
As part of a strategic effort to<br />
improve the existing stagedischarge<br />
rating at Johnson Bar,<br />
Idaho Power Company came<br />
up with the ingenious idea to<br />
attach a RiverCAT to a hardshell<br />
kayak. The kayak was then<br />
paddled across the Snake River<br />
for quick, accurate discharge<br />
measurements.<br />
Their resourceful plan proved<br />
highly effective, and the reults<br />
of the measurements were<br />
excellent. As a bonus, their<br />
creativity eliminated the need<br />
to navigate high-powered jet<br />
boats to the site solely for the<br />
purpose of transecting a<br />
profiler across the river.

Two biological oceanographers,<br />
Joe Ramus and Hans Paerl,<br />
investigated a way to utilize the<br />
NC-DOT’s ferries that traverse<br />
Pamlico Sound many times each<br />
day. After much research, Ramus<br />
contacted Endeco/YSI to learn<br />
more about the 6200 DAS and,<br />
soon after, designed a 6200-<br />
based water quality monitoring<br />
