Location<br />
<strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> Ltd Traincrew employees may be required to work at any Depot in the urban and interurban<br />
networks during the course of their employment. However, in the first instance will be based at our<br />

Part-time Driver – Role & Responsibilities*<br />
Competently drive all relevant forms of traction and trains operated at the depot in a safe and efficient<br />
manner in accordance <strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> Ltd's Business Safety Management System and the philosophy<br />
and values of Zero Harm.<br />
RESPONSIBILITIES:<br />
• Drive all forms of relevant traction and trains operated to meet business needs competently in<br />
accordance with <strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> Ltd's safety and operational standards and procedures.<br />
• Apply train management techniques competently at all times to ensure efficient and safe train<br />
operations and re-accredit as required to meet business objectives.<br />
• Provide quality customer service which enables <strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> Ltd to meets its business<br />
objectives and contractual responsibilities.<br />

Part-time Guard – Role & Responsibilities*<br />
Facilitate safe and efficient train operations and deliver excellence in customer service, demonstrating<br />
pride and professional image in accordance with <strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> Ltd's Business Safety Management<br />
System and the philosophy and values of Zero Harm.<br />
RESPONSIBILITIES:<br />
• Maintain safe and efficient train operations and deliver excellence in customer service by applying<br />
knowledge of safe working and train traction systems, including assisting with the identification,<br />
analysis and rectification of on-train faults/system deficiencies.<br />
• Optimize passenger safety and provide a high level of customer service, including identifying,<br />
monitoring and assisting passengers with special needs.<br />
• Receive, interpret and communicate information in relation to train operations in a safe and effective<br />
manner to deliver excellence in customer service.<br />
• Work in accordance with provisions of the relevant workplace agreement, and all applicable<br />
legislation, regulations, policies and procedures which may be amended from time to time.<br />
• Attain and communicate essential information to on-board passengers with regard to both routine<br />
and unusual events in an appropriate and timely manner at all times to deliver excellence in<br />
customer service.<br />
• Monitor on-board passenger activities and behaviour and implement appropriate action as required,<br />
in order to ensure the safety of passengers and Traincrew.<br />
• Maintain a high level of vigilance, prioritize tasks, and effectively manage workload demands in the<br />
presence of competing responsibilities and distractions so as to ensure optimal safe working<br />
practices.<br />

Selection Process<br />
1. Written application<br />
Part-time Trainee Driver and Part-time Trainee Guard applications must be completed and submitted<br />
online by 5:00pm 9 th August 2010. In addition to answering all mandatory questions in the application<br />
form, applicants must also attach / submit the following:<br />
• Cover letter<br />
• Resume<br />
• Current criminal history record check, or receipt of a lodgement for a criminal history check<br />
• Transport driving history report from the relevant transport authority for the past 5 years or<br />
receipt of a lodgement for a driving history report.<br />
Important<br />
Applicants should check their email each day as all communications for the, Part-time Trainee Driver<br />
and Part-time Trainee Guard, selection processes will be sent to applicant email addresses only.<br />
Applicants may apply for both positions of Trainee Part-time Driver and Trainee Part-time Guard.<br />
However separate applications must be submitted.<br />
2. Online Aptitude and Ability Tests<br />
Applicant’s who meet all the requirements set out in the application form, will be invited to complete<br />
two online aptitude and ability tests. Applicants will be given 5 days to complete the tests from the<br />
date of invite. Applicants, who do not complete the tests in the required timeframe, will not be taken<br />
through to the next stage of the recruitment process.<br />
3. Assessment Centre<br />
Shortlisted applicants will be notified by email and will then be required to attend additional aptitude<br />
and ability testing at a <strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> Ltd nominated location.<br />
4. Interview<br />
As part of the selection process, interviews will be conducted to confirm applicants:<br />
(a) Suitability to be employed by <strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> Ltd.<br />
(b) Understanding, willingness and capability to accept the conditions and requirements of the<br />
role to which they will be appointed.<br />

5. Medical examination<br />
Applicants who meet the interview requirements will need to attend a medical examination conducted<br />
by a <strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> Ltd approved medical officer.<br />
The medical is conducted to ensure the applicant has a level of health specified by <strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong><br />
Ltd’s Traincrew Medical Fitness standards. The examination is designed to detect conditions<br />
including hearing, vision and eye disorders, cardiovascular disease and hypertension, neurological<br />
conditions, diabetes mellitus, substance abuse, psychiatric disorders, locomotor disabilities and<br />
anthropometrics which may prevent an individual from performing Traincrew duties.<br />
If appointed to a Part – time Trainee Driver or Part – time Trainee Guard position, employees are<br />
required to undergo regular medical assessments to ensure ongoing fitness while employed as a<br />
<strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> Ltd Part-time Driver, or Part-time Guard.<br />
6. Reference Checks<br />
Two professional reference checks will be conducted.<br />
7. Additional Requirements<br />
Prior to being offered a position applicants will be required to provide a current national criminal<br />
history record check certificate, a transport driving history report from the relevant transport authority<br />
for the past 5 years and any other reasonable checks prior to appointment with <strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> Ltd.<br />
Please note it is mandatory that you have a current ‘C’ class driver’s license.<br />
8. Offer of Employment<br />
Applicants who are successful and offered a Trainee Part-time Driver or Trainee Part-time Guard<br />
position must successfully complete all training and assessment criteria within the set timeframe in<br />
order to be offered a permanent position as a Part-time Driver or Part-time Guard.<br />
In the event a Trainee is unable to successfully complete all training and assessment criteria within<br />
the set timeframe their opportunity to continue as a Part-time Driver or Part-time Guard will cease.<br />

Training Process<br />
<strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> Ltd has a specific training pathway which identifies the range of modules a Part-time<br />
Trainee Driver or Part-time Trainee Guard needs to be competent in, in order to progress to a Part-time<br />
Driver or Part-time Guards role.<br />
You will be required to work full-time during the training process.<br />
The two main areas of training are:-<br />
1. Theoretical training<br />
The theory portion has a generic Driver and Guard foundation which allows a Trainee with no prior<br />
expertise of Traincrew operations to adapt and meet the necessary requirements.<br />
2. Practical and competency based training<br />
The practical training program for Part-time Trainee Drivers and Part-time Trainee Guards include all<br />
the elements necessary to provide and develop the knowledge, skills, aptitudes and ability to<br />
consistently perform Traincrew duties to the industry standard.<br />
Please Note<br />
All Trainees must successfully complete all training and assessment criteria within the set time frame in<br />
order to be offered a permanent position as a Part-time Driver or Part-time Guard.<br />
In the event a Trainee is unable to successfully complete all training and assessment criteria within the<br />
set timeframe their opportunity to continue as a Part-time Driver or Part-time Guard will cease.<br />

Self-Assessment Checklist<br />
The following checklist provides information about the conditions and expectations placed on<br />
<strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> Ltd Part-time Drivers and Part-time Guards to help determine whether you are suitable<br />
for the job.<br />
You are required to understand and accept all of the below conditions and expectations to be eligible for<br />
the Part-time trainee Driver, or Part-time trainee Guard positions.<br />
If you are not able to accept the conditions and expectations of the role, you will not be able to progress<br />
through to the selection process.<br />
Part-time trainee Driver & Part-time trainee Guard positions require applicants to be prepared to agree to<br />
the following conditions and expectations:<br />
• During the training period you will be required to work on a full-time basis.<br />
• Working shift hours within a 24 hour, 7 day roster.<br />
• Working in a train unit for up to 8.5 hours at a time.<br />
• Follow direct instructions for operating a safe and efficient railway.<br />
• Remain vigilant and attentive for long periods while performing highly repetitive work tasks.<br />
• Ensure a 0.00 Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) at all times while on duty.<br />
• Undergo random alcohol and drug testing in accordance with <strong>Queensland</strong> <strong>Rail</strong> Ltd’s Alcohol and<br />
Other Drug testing program.<br />
• Responsibility for the safe and efficient management of the train and passengers.<br />
• Attend further training and re-accreditation programs throughout your career.<br />
• *Provide a current Criminal History record Check at the time of application (internal applicants will<br />
not need to provide this information).<br />
• * Provide a Transport driving history report from the relevant transport authority for the past 5<br />
years at the time of application (internal applicants will not need to provide this information).<br />
• * Undergo a blood and urine test prior to being offered a position as a Part-time Trainee Driver or<br />

Hours of Work<br />
Your application for the position of Part-time Trainee Driver or Part-time Trainee Guard will only be<br />
considered if you can accept and commit to the following conditions:<br />
- You will be guaranteed 88 hours work over a 4 week cycle, averaging 22 hours per week.<br />
- You will be required to work frequent weekend work.<br />
- You will be required to work shift work over a 24 hour cycle.<br />
Annual Salary<br />
Part-time Driver<br />
The average annual wage based on 88 hours over a 4 week cycle, is approximately $43,213. In<br />
addition, shifts worked on Saturday and/or Sunday will attract a further penalty rate of 37.5% of the full<br />
flat rate.<br />
Part-time Guard<br />
The average annual wage based on 88 hours over a 4 week cycle, is approximately $40,619. In addition,<br />
shifts worked on Saturday and/or Sunday will attract a further penalty rate of 37.5% of the full flat rate.<br />
Criminal History Record Check<br />
You must provide a current Criminal History Check when applying for the Part-time Trainee Driver and<br />
Part-time Trainee Guard on-line (i.e. scanned copy of receipt).<br />
Criminal History Checks can be obtained from your local Police Station and information can be found at<br />
http://www.police.qld.gov.au/services/purchase/polcert.htm.<br />
As stated on the <strong>Queensland</strong> Police website, “Persons who seek a National Police Certificate must make<br />
application at any police station in <strong>Queensland</strong>. Applicants will require sufficient identification such as a<br />
current driver’s license, passport or other photographic identity document. Payment by cash, bank<br />
cheque, personal cheque or money order made out to the Commissioner for Police, is required at<br />
lodgement.”<br />
You will be given a receipt from the Police department when you apply for your current Criminal History<br />
Check. Please ensure that you obtain this.<br />
