Location
Queensland Rail Ltd Traincrew employees may be required to work at any Depot in the urban and interurban
networks during the course of their employment. However, in the first instance will be based at our
Mayne depot (Bowen Hills).

Part-time Driver – Role & Responsibilities*
Competently drive all relevant forms of traction and trains operated at the depot in a safe and efficient
manner in accordance Queensland Rail Ltd's Business Safety Management System and the philosophy
and values of Zero Harm.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Drive all forms of relevant traction and trains operated to meet business needs competently in
accordance with Queensland Rail Ltd's safety and operational standards and procedures.
• Apply train management techniques competently at all times to ensure efficient and safe train
operations and re-accredit as required to meet business objectives.
• Provide quality customer service which enables Queensland Rail Ltd to meets its business
objectives and contractual responsibilities.
• Work in accordance with provisions of the relevant workplace agreement, and all applicable
legislation, regulations, policies and procedures which may be amended from time to time.
• Contribute to ongoing performance improvement.
• Perform all responsibilities in a manner which demonstrates commitment to Zero Harm and
projects pride and a professional image for Queensland Rail Ltd.
*Please note, you will be regarded as a “Trainee Driver” until you have successfully completed all
training and assessment criteria within the set timeframe.

Part-time Guard – Role & Responsibilities*
Facilitate safe and efficient train operations and deliver excellence in customer service, demonstrating
pride and professional image in accordance with Queensland Rail Ltd's Business Safety Management
System and the philosophy and values of Zero Harm.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Maintain safe and efficient train operations and deliver excellence in customer service by applying
knowledge of safe working and train traction systems, including assisting with the identification,
analysis and rectification of on-train faults/system deficiencies.
• Optimize passenger safety and provide a high level of customer service, including identifying,
monitoring and assisting passengers with special needs.
• Receive, interpret and communicate information in relation to train operations in a safe and effective
manner to deliver excellence in customer service.
• Work in accordance with provisions of the relevant workplace agreement, and all applicable
legislation, regulations, policies and procedures which may be amended from time to time.
• Attain and communicate essential information to on-board passengers with regard to both routine
and unusual events in an appropriate and timely manner at all times to deliver excellence in
customer service.
• Monitor on-board passenger activities and behaviour and implement appropriate action as required,
in order to ensure the safety of passengers and Traincrew.
• Maintain a high level of vigilance, prioritize tasks, and effectively manage workload demands in the
presence of competing responsibilities and distractions so as to ensure optimal safe working
practices.
• Perform all responsibilities in a manner which demonstrates commitment to Zero Harm and projects
pride and a professional image for Queensland Rail Ltd's.

Selection Process
1. Written application
Part-time Trainee Driver and Part-time Trainee Guard applications must be completed and submitted
online by 5:00pm 9 th August 2010. In addition to answering all mandatory questions in the application
form, applicants must also attach / submit the following:
• Cover letter
• Resume
• Current criminal history record check, or receipt of a lodgement for a criminal history check
• Transport driving history report from the relevant transport authority for the past 5 years or
receipt of a lodgement for a driving history report.
Important
Applicants should check their email each day as all communications for the, Part-time Trainee Driver
and Part-time Trainee Guard, selection processes will be sent to applicant email addresses only.
Applicants may apply for both positions of Trainee Part-time Driver and Trainee Part-time Guard.
However separate applications must be submitted.
2. Online Aptitude and Ability Tests
Applicant’s who meet all the requirements set out in the application form, will be invited to complete
two online aptitude and ability tests. Applicants will be given 5 days to complete the tests from the
date of invite. Applicants, who do not complete the tests in the required timeframe, will not be taken
through to the next stage of the recruitment process.
3. Assessment Centre
Shortlisted applicants will be notified by email and will then be required to attend additional aptitude
and ability testing at a Queensland Rail Ltd nominated location.
4. Interview
As part of the selection process, interviews will be conducted to confirm applicants:
(a) Suitability to be employed by Queensland Rail Ltd.
(b) Understanding, willingness and capability to accept the conditions and requirements of the
role to which they will be appointed.

5. Medical examination
Applicants who meet the interview requirements will need to attend a medical examination conducted
by a Queensland Rail Ltd approved medical officer.
The medical is conducted to ensure the applicant has a level of health specified by Queensland Rail
Ltd’s Traincrew Medical Fitness standards. The examination is designed to detect conditions
including hearing, vision and eye disorders, cardiovascular disease and hypertension, neurological
conditions, diabetes mellitus, substance abuse, psychiatric disorders, locomotor disabilities and
anthropometrics which may prevent an individual from performing Traincrew duties.
If appointed to a Part – time Trainee Driver or Part – time Trainee Guard position, employees are
required to undergo regular medical assessments to ensure ongoing fitness while employed as a
Queensland Rail Ltd Part-time Driver, or Part-time Guard.
6. Reference Checks
Two professional reference checks will be conducted.
7. Additional Requirements
Prior to being offered a position applicants will be required to provide a current national criminal
history record check certificate, a transport driving history report from the relevant transport authority
for the past 5 years and any other reasonable checks prior to appointment with Queensland Rail Ltd.
Please note it is mandatory that you have a current ‘C’ class driver’s license.
8. Offer of Employment
Applicants who are successful and offered a Trainee Part-time Driver or Trainee Part-time Guard
position must successfully complete all training and assessment criteria within the set timeframe in
order to be offered a permanent position as a Part-time Driver or Part-time Guard.
In the event a Trainee is unable to successfully complete all training and assessment criteria within
the set timeframe their opportunity to continue as a Part-time Driver or Part-time Guard will cease.

Training Process
Queensland Rail Ltd has a specific training pathway which identifies the range of modules a Part-time
Trainee Driver or Part-time Trainee Guard needs to be competent in, in order to progress to a Part-time
Driver or Part-time Guards role.
You will be required to work full-time during the training process.
The two main areas of training are:-
1. Theoretical training
The theory portion has a generic Driver and Guard foundation which allows a Trainee with no prior
expertise of Traincrew operations to adapt and meet the necessary requirements.
2. Practical and competency based training
The practical training program for Part-time Trainee Drivers and Part-time Trainee Guards include all
the elements necessary to provide and develop the knowledge, skills, aptitudes and ability to
consistently perform Traincrew duties to the industry standard.
Please Note
All Trainees must successfully complete all training and assessment criteria within the set time frame in
order to be offered a permanent position as a Part-time Driver or Part-time Guard.
In the event a Trainee is unable to successfully complete all training and assessment criteria within the
set timeframe their opportunity to continue as a Part-time Driver or Part-time Guard will cease.

Self-Assessment Checklist
The following checklist provides information about the conditions and expectations placed on
Queensland Rail Ltd Part-time Drivers and Part-time Guards to help determine whether you are suitable
for the job.
You are required to understand and accept all of the below conditions and expectations to be eligible for
the Part-time trainee Driver, or Part-time trainee Guard positions.
If you are not able to accept the conditions and expectations of the role, you will not be able to progress
through to the selection process.
Part-time trainee Driver & Part-time trainee Guard positions require applicants to be prepared to agree to
the following conditions and expectations:
• During the training period you will be required to work on a full-time basis.
• Working shift hours within a 24 hour, 7 day roster.
• Working in a train unit for up to 8.5 hours at a time.
• Follow direct instructions for operating a safe and efficient railway.
• Remain vigilant and attentive for long periods while performing highly repetitive work tasks.
• Ensure a 0.00 Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) at all times while on duty.
• Undergo random alcohol and drug testing in accordance with Queensland Rail Ltd’s Alcohol and
Other Drug testing program.
• Responsibility for the safe and efficient management of the train and passengers.
• Attend further training and re-accreditation programs throughout your career.
• *Provide a current Criminal History record Check at the time of application (internal applicants will
not need to provide this information).
• * Provide a Transport driving history report from the relevant transport authority for the past 5
years at the time of application (internal applicants will not need to provide this information).
• * Undergo a blood and urine test prior to being offered a position as a Part-time Trainee Driver or
Part-time Trainee Guard. (internal applicants will not need to provide this information).

Hours of Work
Your application for the position of Part-time Trainee Driver or Part-time Trainee Guard will only be
considered if you can accept and commit to the following conditions:
- You will be guaranteed 88 hours work over a 4 week cycle, averaging 22 hours per week.
- You will be required to work frequent weekend work.
- You will be required to work shift work over a 24 hour cycle.
Annual Salary
Part-time Driver
The average annual wage based on 88 hours over a 4 week cycle, is approximately $43,213. In
addition, shifts worked on Saturday and/or Sunday will attract a further penalty rate of 37.5% of the full
flat rate.
Part-time Guard
The average annual wage based on 88 hours over a 4 week cycle, is approximately $40,619. In addition,
shifts worked on Saturday and/or Sunday will attract a further penalty rate of 37.5% of the full flat rate.
Criminal History Record Check
You must provide a current Criminal History Check when applying for the Part-time Trainee Driver and
Part-time Trainee Guard on-line (i.e. scanned copy of receipt).
Criminal History Checks can be obtained from your local Police Station and information can be found at
http://www.police.qld.gov.au/services/purchase/polcert.htm.
As stated on the Queensland Police website, “Persons who seek a National Police Certificate must make
application at any police station in Queensland. Applicants will require sufficient identification such as a
current driver’s license, passport or other photographic identity document. Payment by cash, bank
cheque, personal cheque or money order made out to the Commissioner for Police, is required at
lodgement.”
You will be given a receipt from the Police department when you apply for your current Criminal History
Check. Please ensure that you obtain this.

Please scan and attach this receipt to your on-line application when requested; this scanned receipt will
be accepted as a current criminal history check at the time of your application.
You will be requested to present your original Criminal History Check report at the panel interview stage.
You must present this to be offered employment.
Transport History Check
Applicants must supply a Transport History check for the past 5 years.
For example, if you lived in New South Wales for 3 of the past 5 years, then you need to provide a New
South Wales history and a Queensland history.
