Davidson board hears
economic plan
by Courtney Price
courtney@huntersvilleherald.com
Davidson is gearing up to attract
more business and to study parking
downtown, the Economic Development
Department told the Board of Commissioners
Tuesday night, Sept. 28.
Downtown Manager Sandy Lemons
gave a presentation to the board showing
economic growth from 2009 to
2010.
According to her presentation, the
number of jobs, businesses and total
occupied commercial space increased
in downtown Davidson and at Exit 30.
Final numbers were not available.
“So much of it is market-driven. We
can’t tell people we want more offices
or fewer convenience stores,” Kris Krider,
Davidson’s economic development
manager said.
But, he said, the market can affect
what types of businesses the town tries
to recruit.
Commissioner Connie Wessner noted
that the presentation detailed statistics,
but not what plans would stem
from those numbers. She pressed the
development team to figure out the best
way to use the collected data for further
planning.
That plan, could come from an Economic
Advisory Council, which Krider
recommended after presenting the economic
numbers. The council would
be comprised of public officials and
private stakeholders who would review
economic growth and devise plans for
further development based on the collected
data.
“What is it that we’re seeking and
what are the numbers we’d like to see?
I don’t think we’re there yet,” Krider
said. “What are the town’s goals, what
are our economic development goals?”
These are questions the stakeholder
group would likely be answering, he
said.
Krider said that, as part of the downtown
development, the parking consultant
firm Rich & Associates will conduct
a parking study of downtown Davidson,
starting in about a month.
The study will look at existing and
potential parking, survey residents and
merchants and watch for typical parking
behavior. The study will determine
whether there is a parking problem
in Davidson, and if so, how the town
could correct it.
The draft results of the study should
be presented to the board in the first
part of 2011. q
