Asia Pacific’s
Entertainment
Market Hits
High Notes
The Asia Pacific market is the second
largest media and entertainment market
in the world, according to an industry
market survey. The Asia Pacific has
recorded 25% or $16.8 billion of global
sales and is expected to be the fastest
growing over the next three years, at a
CAGR of 13% vs 9% CAGR projected
for Europe and North America. This market
is targeted to hit $23.9 billion by 2012.
Global media and entertainment revenue
forecast up to 2012 is expected to grow
at 5% CAGR to pass the trillion mark
by the end of 2012, up from $798 billion
in 2007.
- Strategy Analytics.
The pace of consumers’ migration to
new digital platforms is running well
ahead of the industry’s expectations.
The uncertain economic background has
done nothing to slow the pace of change,
which has been far quicker than predicted
12 months ago.
The Professional Audio, Lighting, AV, Systems Integration,
Music, Software & IT and Entertainment Technology Exhibition
With the stage ripe for growth, Palme Asia marks its return in 2011 as the most comprehensive
event in S.E. Asia for professional audio and lighting, AV, system integration, music software &
IT and entertainment technology. This international trade exhibition focuses on new technology,
equipment and products and the commercial opportunities available for those in the live audio,
professional recording, audio reinforcement, lighting technology, visual and audio communications
for the entertainment, presentation, music and other related industries – virtually an amazing
array of multiplatform technologies, all under one roof.
The Rosy Asian Market Beckons
There is no better time than at Palme Asia 2011, to tap the fast growing market for audio,
lighting, AV, music software & IT and entertainment technology. With the global economic
situation changing rapidly the prospects for much of the Asian region look rosier than other
parts of the world.
Measures under the 10th Malaysian Plan along with further liberalisation efforts on the
services sector will attract more investors’ participation in the long-run. The Malaysian Institute
of Economic Research is revising upwards its 2010 GDP growth rate to +6.5% year on year from
previously +5.2%.
Indonesia was among the world’s top performing economies throughout the global financial
crisis, clocking 4.5 per cent growth in 2009. Indonesia’s robust growth is expected to continue
in 2010 with GDP growth rising to 5.4%. Indonesia’s economic growth is forecast to reach
7% by 2011.
The Asian Development Bank expects Thailand to bounce back to above 3.5% growth in 2010.
Economic indicators show that the economy of Thailand continued to rebound in the first quarter
of the year; its GDP growth projection for 2010 to between 4.3 and 5.8 per cent, up from the
earlier forecast of 3.3 to 5.3 per cent with the government’s measures to stimulate the economy
expected to deliver 6 percent growth in the country’s gross domestic product this year.
The IMF gave a forecast of 3.5% growth for the Philippines in 2010. However recent active
economic measures by the government has lifted expectations as Philippine economic managers
raised GDP growth forecast this year to 5 to 6 percent on the back of strong consumption.
Singapore has a highly developed and successful free-market economy. It enjoys a per capita
GDP higher than that of most developed countries. Singapore’s economy as a result of a
surge in GDP in Q2 of 2010 is forecast to expand by a record pace in 2010 that is pegged at a
15-15.5% full-year growth.
Display Technologies
Digital Display Tech brings together the world’s leading solutions providers
to showcase the latest in digital signage systems, and to share, learn
and explore with end-users, all under one roof.
Digital signage has exploded in importance in the last several years,
and changed the way that companies and institutions communicate
to consumers and customers in public places. New technology, lower
price points and better performance capacity coupled with increased
applications especially in IT and AV equipment and products are driving
rapid growth of the booming industry. From retail chains, stores, malls,
F & B outlets, bars & nightclubs to airports, stadiums, underground
stations, transport terminals and museums to theme parks, race tracks,
casinos, theaters, outdoor signage of advertising screens and the use of
dynamic audio and video display messages are becoming more common.
This is flashing healthy market prospects for the industry all over Asia.
Business Opportunities in Asia
The global entertainment and media (E&M) industry is experiencing rapid growth of an average 6.6 percent a year to $2.2 trillion by 2010, with Asia
Pacific as one of the fastest growing region, presenting immense business opportunities in the industry.
As the property market booms and the demand for intelligent building technology takes off, more and more commercial and residential buildings
are adopting the latest state-of-the-art intelligent building technology.
Alongside Asia’s aim to become a leading retail destination on par with other cities such as Milan, London and New York, shopping belts and tourist
destinations are positioning themselves as lifestyle activities rather than pure shopping destinations. Existing malls are reinventing themselves by
undergoing major renovations and facelifts by integrating new concepts.
With these events and major building projects in the pipelines, urban planners and developers are integrating new technology and integration systems
to create an intelligent city. The projects, amounting to more than USD$400 billion planned throughout Asia provides a new window for pro-audio,
lighting, audio visual and systems integration solutions to work in this field.

KEY FOCUS AREAS
Houses of Worship Live Staging Digital Display Technologies Architectural Lighting Music Software & IT
With over 5,000 houses of worship around South-
East Asia, this multicultural worship market has been
fertile ground for media technology. New institutions
are being built and older ones retrofitted to meet
its growing membership. Facilities vary among the
institutions ranging from basic AV media tools in
smaller ones while mega institutions boost state of
the art acoustics, video and lighting systems. Over
the years, the members and leaders of houses of
worship have since become increasingly tech savvy.
Demand for upgrading projects is now a growing
market and there is certainly enough business for
equipment providers, AV integrators, dealers and
Houses of worship consultants. . Acoustic Treatments
or enhancement is a powerful tool that can provide
improved sound quality and a more enveloping
listening experience. When applied correctly, it can
solve problems in ways that traditional architecture
alone cannot. In addition, it can provide significantly
greater flexibility and control of acoustic delivery. The
demand for these systems is growing and contractors
are implementing acoustic systems in venues of all
types, both indoors and outdoors. This includes the
growing trend for retrofitting old performing arts
venues and houses of worship and other applications
ranging from hotel function rooms, sports arena,
sound stages, recording facilities, and even privates
homes.
The last few years have seen an awakening in Asia to
staging all kinds of mega events further to a broad
range of ongoing events such as pop/rock concerts,
cultural & classical performances, musical festivals &
extravaganzas and dramas, sporting events, public
cerebrations, major corporate product launches,
conferences/seminars & meetings, business sessions,
awards ceremonies, fashion shows, parties and
more, notably with the upward trend for outdoor
mega events too. Countries are staging large-scale
and big budget events that require a serious level
of production event facilities including lighting,
staging, rigging, trussing, power, event structures,
barriers and much more, enabling event directors,
designers and producers to make important
purchasing decisions that will shape the success
of their major forthcoming events. This sector
allows attendees to take best advantage of the
networking of relevant individuals and wealth of
knowledge, through drawing together thousands of
stadium architects, organizers, designers and sports
venue owners including outdoor venues eager to
discover how they can use live events to develop
and optimize additional lucrative revenue streams
for their business.
The digital display industry is gaining steam at
a phenomenal rate in public and commercial
environments. According to Global Industry Analyst,
the world market for outdoor advertising is projected
to reach US$ 30.4 billion by the year 2010. Asia
Pacific market has a growth potential of 12%
with Indonesia, Thailand and China estimated to
generate 65% of the total expenditures on outdoor
advertising in Asia by 2010. The digital display
hardware makes up primarily of LED screens and _at
panel displays and as a result of its efficiency, outdoor
digital is gradually replacing static images and has
become more widely recognised and significant in
a variety of industries, largely advertising, public
information, retail, academic and medical. According
to DisplaySearch, a research company, it is quoted
that as with every other segment of the display
industry, outdoor digital signage is experiencing
significant growth. The global market for digital
signage displays is currently worth more than
US$1.5billion. Rapid growth in the digital displays
directly spins off a demand in software content
management systems, integration and installation
businesses.
Trends are mushrooming for energy-efficient lighting
from the most impactful technologies to lighting
controls and next-generation lightings. Building
owners and managers are more than aware that
effective management of lighting needs to be a
primary focus for a sound energy efficiency strategy.
City or urban decorative lighting is also a rising
trend in developed economies of Asia. Designers
and manufacturers are also responding rapidly with
solutions that support lower energy consumption and
new generation technologies. The Asian real estate
investment market has shown steady improvement
in the first half of 2010 with direct real estate
investment in the region rising 136% year-onyear
to an estimated US$30 billion, a new report
shows. The beaming growth in the real estate
sector in Singapore and the region is beaming up
the increased prospects for architectural lighting in
the commercial sector.
Music recording studios cannot function without
computers. Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs)
have replaced the Analog as well as tape based
Digital recorders. Some of these DAWs include
Pro Tools, Logic Studio, Nuendo, Cubase and Live.
All professional musicians now depend on DAWs
for its convenience and flexibility. Sound libraries
and software synths have very rapidly replaced
the real instruments. Without sound libraries and
software synths, it is not completely possible to
create a song, television commercial, a film score,
or a video game score.
Consuming music is a popular pastime in Asia and
people are fast adapting to digital music with the
increasing use of digital media. With the bulk of
Asia’s youth being under 30 years of age, a new
generation of creative digital youth has risen that is
making critical choices from a wide range of music,
music software to IT-use and increasingly over diverse
devices; ways to enjoy music are changing rapidly. In
these last few years too there has been a dramatic
shift in the sourcing avenues for music as well as
increase in outlets such as bars, discos, theatres,
restaurants, entertainment centers, shopping malls,
function halls and even institutional organizations
& events that use music in a big way, thereby
presenting manifold business opportunities for the
music, software, IT and entertainment technology
industries as a whole.
