28 Creating Asset Rich Environments for Children and Youth
Ventura County Picture
According to the 2005-2006 California Healthy Kids Survey, the percentage of students
reporting having a high level of meaningful participation in school were:
◆◆ 16 % of 5th and 11th graders,
◆◆ 17 % of 7th graders and
◆◆ 13 % of 9th graders in Ventura County
Over 80% of our
young people believe
they do not
have a voice in
making school
rules, in determining
the products
that contribute
to their grades,
and in evaluating
the effectiveness
of school practices
and policies.
More young people
report high
levels of meaningful
participation
in the community
than in schools.
The “take home message,” is that too many young people in Ventura County who participated
in this survey revealed that they are not engaged in meaningful participation in either
school or the community.
