From the Head of School
Dear Friends,
it is hard to believe that four years have passed since my wife Annette and i brought our family to
Dwight-Englewood. watching the class of 2010 graduate this past June was a milestone for us and
most certainly for them. it is an exciting time for our newest alumni as they move on, ready to start
their college careers, prepared by our faculty for the challenges ahead of them. we bid them farewell,
but hope they will remain in touch because we have shared so much with them.
i write now to express my deep and profound appreciation for the support you provide Dwight-
Englewood School. This Annual report reflects your personal dedication to enhance the ways in which
our School fulfills its mission. it is also important for you to know that we remain diligent in our
efforts to provide the very best education possible, while being good stewards of our resources. toward
these goals, this year the School earned accreditation from the new Jersey Association of independent
Schools and the Middle States Association of Schools and colleges. As important as these accreditations
are for the School, we can be most proud of the respect and attention Dwight-Englewood has
earned from educators both regionally and nationally.
The past school year saw many initiatives come to fruition and many begin as we continue to seek
excellence in all we do. Based on current research and best practices in education today, we developed
and implemented new daily schedules in all divisions. recent and ongoing efforts to improve curriculum
and programs would not have been possible without the support of this year’s Annual Fund. These
include the development of additional elective and discovery courses, dynamic curriculum mapping to
improve and ensure vertical alignment and appropriate academic growth for students, a new “intermester”
week, continued development of play-based, child-centered early childhood programming, and
focused concentration on our language Arts program, as well as increased opportunities for educational
experiences abroad.
Additionally, Annual Fund 2009-10 supported, through the funding of professional development, a
year’s study of applications from recent brain research, continued progress in methodologies that allow
us to reach a broader range of learning styles, continued growth in the important role we play as advisors
to students, academic course work and attendance at conferences including presentations from our
faculty and staff at several national conferences.
Your support also demonstrates to our children the importance of helping others. children across the
School supported the people of the earthquake in haiti; while closer to home, they coordinated blood
drives, held new events to fight cancer, and supplied the neighborhood food bank.
Your gifts helped make our success this year possible. please know how much we appreciate and treasure
your support and do our best to invest each dollar wisely. Annette and i look forward to starting
our fifth year at Dwight-Englewood and thank you for being a part of this community.

From the President,
Board of Trustees
to the Dwight-Englewood community,
Surrounding our students at Dwight-Englewood is a generous community of givers: parents who give
of their time through volunteering in the parents’ Association, the parents’ Education program, the
coop and the libraries; their talent through the Friends of the Arts providing delicious treats at all the
school concerts and plays and the Special Events committee which hosted two outstanding events this
year, “casablanca — Auction 2010” and the Bulldog classic. Joining the list is the Annual Fund committee
which set a record on June 30, reaching just over $773,000 in unrestricted annual giving for the
first time in D-E history. parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, friends and alumni who attend arts and
athletic events all contribute to the vibrant community that is Dwight-Englewood and by our participation,
enthusiasm and financial support show our children how much we care. together, we all create
the warm home away from home that is our School.
it is with a deep sense of gratitude that i say thank you to all of you. As president of your Board of
trustees, it is my job to ensure that the future of Dwight-Englewood is secure. i am happy to report on
behalf of the Board that our School is in great shape. under the leadership of our wonderful head of
School, Dr. rodney De Jarnett, we have accomplished so much in the last four years. our curriculum
has been revitalized and the facilities have never looked better. with the exciting plans we have underway
for the future, there has never been a better time to be a student at D-E.
we will, of course, continue to need the help of our community — those generous individuals who
make up our community of givers. The Annual Fund must grow and our goal of $1 million for 2010-
11 reflects that need. if indeed we are to “meet the challenges of a changing world,” then our Annual
Fund must help pave the way. You will note in the leadership giving section of this report that we
have added levels to the head of School Society to reflect the need for leadership and continued commitment
from this vital and engaged community.
The bonds that are created at Dwight-Englewood last a lifetime. our alumni continue to return, reconnect
with old friends, and set an example for our more recent graduates. to paraphrase Maya Angelou,
it isn’t what someone says, or what someone does that matters, it is how they make you feel. Dwight-
Englewood continues to provide not only an outstanding education to our students, but it is also a
place where everyone feels known and loved.

The Head of School Society
Leadership GivinG
The Head of School Society recognizes all gifts to the Annual Fund made during Dwight-Englewood
School’s fiscal year of July 1 to June 30. Especially important are unrestricted gifts which help to
bridge the gap between the real cost of a D-E education and the tuition we charge, thereby providing
the critical margin of excellence so important to the future success of our students. Members
of the Society who give at the Sustainer Level and above are invited to a cocktail reception in the
fall hosted by Dr. and Mrs. De Jarnett. Donors at the Partner Level and above are invited to small
dinners hosted by trustees and Dr. and Mrs. De Jarnett. We thank all the members of our community

Capital Gifts
Capital gifts are typically made with the future in mind. Donors may add to the permanent assets of
Dwight-Englewood through an addition to bricks and mortar or to the financial strength of the School
through an investment in endowment, the income of which will support D-E in perpetuity. Typically
these gifts are made during capital campaigns and are payable over three to five years, but they may
also be made through bequests or by a donor with an interest in financial aid or faculty endowment.
Named capital gifts are a wonderful way to honor a loved one or a favorite faculty member.

Auction 2010 — Casablanca February 20, 2010
“Casablanca,” Dwight-Englewood School’s Biennial Auction and Dinner Dance took place on Saturday,
February 20, 2010 at Westmount Country Club. Under the capable leadership of co-chairs, Alexis
Cooperman and Jennifer Kang, this year’s event raised $317,000 for the benefit of our faculty and
staff. Along with tables laden with Silent Auction items, there was great energy during the spirited
bidding surrounding the live auction of cars, trips and sporting events. A spectacular ballroom dance
exhibition added to the evening’s festivities. The introduction this year of the Principals’ Wish List
was a hit and a tradition that we hope will continue.

Dwight-Englewood School’s Bulldog Classic for the benefit of D-E financial aid students took place
on Monday, May 17, 2010 at Manhattan Woods Golf Club. Ably chaired by Matt Golub, Jennifer
Kang and Debbie Satnick, and generously led by the Grace and Mercy Foundation, our Presenting
Sponsor, the day was replete with fun, food and camaraderie and raised over $68,000 for a very

315 East and Jazz Vistas presented four concerts this year. Jazz
Vistas highlighted Popular Classics, Old and New and African
Connections while 315 East took on the Carnival of the Animals
and Classic Masterpieces with a Gypsy Flair. As a finale, the
Series presented the Trio Cavatina featuring Harumi Rhodes ’97

The Economics of Making a Gift
Making a gift can be beneficial to both the donor and to Dwight-Englewood School. Our faculty and
students benefit directly from gifts to the Annual Fund, projects funded through capital campaigns
and the support that is derived from investment income on permanent endowment. From a tax
perspective, giving to D-E can also be beneficial to our donors. By considering the many different
ways of making a gift, you can select a gift vehicle that best suits your needs and interests. Many
times, with careful planning, a donor is able to make a more substantial gift and reap significant
tax and estate planning benefits.
Financial Flexibility in Making Your Gift
Gifts Of cash
while there are many ways to give to Dwight-Englewood School,
contributions made by personal check, Visa, Mastercard, or
American Express make your gift immediately available to the
School. Electronic fund transfers allow your financial institution
to transfer funds on a regular basis. A gift of cash entitles a donor
to an income-tax deduction subject to tax-deductible limitations.
The Development office is happy to schedule pledge installments
by credit card or pledge payments if that suits the donor’s needs
as well.
Gifts Of securities
gifts of appreciated stock may allow a donor to avoid capital gains
tax in addition to the usual tax deduction for the contribution.
gifts of stock enable many Dwight-Englewood constituents to contribute
far more to the School than would otherwise be possible.
matchinG Gifts
if you or your spouse or partner work for a company with
a matching gift program, please complete and return your
company’s matching gift form with your gift. The value of your
gift can be doubled, and in some instances, tripled through this
simple process.

gifts of primary residences, vacation property, buildings, land,
