informed that there was a list of prominent<br />
community people that were being<br />
considered for this special recognition.<br />
We inquired as to what was necessary<br />
for our request in being added to this<br />
list. It was quite an undertaking, but we<br />
went to work in trying to accomplish<br />
our goal.<br />
We took our case to the New York<br />
City Board of Education referring us to<br />
the Borough Superintendent of Schools<br />
(who by the way is a member of our<br />
chapter) down to the Local School<br />
Boards. We had meetings on all levels<br />
of the bureaucracy. <strong>The</strong>y all listened<br />
and started building the school.<br />
Our claim to fame was that this was the 50th Anniversary of the<br />
start of the <strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong>, once called “<strong>The</strong> Forgotten <strong>War</strong>” and that<br />
Cpl. Kivlehan was the first of 35 military persons from Staten Island<br />
killed during this war. Most of his surviving family and relatives still<br />
live here on Staten Island and supported us wholeheartedly. Cpl.<br />
Kivlehan had died while being held as a Prisoner of <strong>War</strong> in 1950 and<br />
that is one of the reasons we named our chapter after him with the<br />
permission of his then living mother, Harriet Kivlehan. She was<br />
given life membership in our chapter and supported us to her dying<br />
day.<br />
<strong>The</strong> school was completed this year and was dedicated in June and<br />
was named PS 6, “<strong>The</strong> Cpl. Allan F. Kivlehan School.” This is the<br />
only school in New York City named for a veteran. What an accomplishment!!!<br />

On <strong>Veterans</strong> Week on Staten Island the chapter donated and<br />
installed a bronze plaque in the lobby of the school showing our<br />
appreciation and explaining to all viewers acknowledging veterans<br />
and the sacrifice Allan made for his country 50 years ago. Pictured are<br />
Chapter members who attended this ceremony and the bronze plaque<br />
on the wall.<br />

“Secretary’s Notes”<br />
<strong>The</strong> Chapter <strong>KWVA</strong> met at Elks Lodge #309, Colorado Springs,<br />
on Saturday, September 15. We were called to order by chapter president<br />
Scott Defebaugh. <strong>The</strong>re were 65 members in attendance. <strong>The</strong><br />
Pledge of Allegiance was led by Bob Davis and the invocation was<br />
led by Bill Hureau. Copies of the treasurer’s report were made available.<br />
First VP John Goodner introduced our speaker, MAJ Jeffery<br />
Robinette, a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute. He’s been in<br />
the Army 16 years and is currently stationed at Fort Carson. He spoke<br />
on his experience with the Central Identification Laboratory in<br />
Hawaii and his MIA missions in North Korea. Every site is excavated<br />
in a scientific manner and is examined by an archaeologist and a<br />
physical anthropologist, while the bone fragments are examined by<br />
DNA experts. Of the 107 individuals returned from North Korea,<br />
only five have been identified.<br />
Dutch Nelsen presented the <strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong> Service Medal to<br />
Horbert Higgins, USMC, and Ignacio Lopez, 5th RCT. <strong>The</strong> meeting<br />
was adjourned at 1:30 p.m.<br />

on chapter meetings for I rather get a photo of the veterans or the<br />
event with some detail. In this case I am printing some of your note<br />
mainly because I met Major Robinette in North Korea on a DPMO<br />
(DoD) sponsored viewing of a recovery mission for VSO’s in 1998. I<br />
will never forget his words to me. “If I could spend the rest of my<br />
career in the service hunting for your loved one (brother) I would do<br />
it.” A great man and veteran. A special event for your chapter.)<br />
