Residences Guide 

The University’s Main Building 

For the majority of you, attending university will mean living away from 

home for the first time. Settling in and making friends are important first 

steps at the start of your university life. Living in a University Residence 

gives you an ideal opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds, 

studying a wide range of subjects. 

A Guarantee of Residence: 

Undergraduate 

All undergraduate students entering through 

the normal admissions cycle are guaranteed 

a single occupancy place in University 

Residences. While this guarantee does not 

extend to the small number of applicants 

who come through the Clearing process, 

the Residences Office will make every 

effort to provide such students with suitable 

accommodation. 

Postgraduate 

All International/European postgraduate 

students are guaranteed a single 

occupancy place in University Residences. 

To guarantee your place, the Residences 

Office must receive your online application 

and non-refundable pre-payment by the 

deadline in early September. 

Quality 

The University has always attached great 

importance to the provision of high quality 

accommodation and is continually investing 

in its student residences. You will see 

from this guide that there are a variety of 

residences, many with en-suite bathroom 

facilities within each single study bedroom. 

Convenience 

Most of the residences are situated within 

a short walk or cycle ride of the academic 

buildings, the University Students’ Union 

and Cardiff’s magnificent civic centre. 

Choice 

As far as possible, the University aims to 

give you a choice of residence. If you are 

made an offer to study at Cardiff University, 

you will be sent details of how to apply for 

University Residences online. Please note, 

obtaining your higher preferences cannot be 

guaranteed. 

Cardiff University 

Disability/medical information 

A limited number of residences which have 

been specifically adapted are available for 

students with a disability/medical condition. 

The Residences Office is also willing to 

make reasonable adjustments for disabled 

students. 

Welsh speakers 

Some of the flats at Senghennydd Court 

and Talybont North are reserved for Welsh 

speakers and learners of Welsh who wish 

to be grouped together. 

Families and couples 

A very limited number of University flats and 

bedsitters are available for students in their 

first year of study. 

Private accommodation 

In addition to allocating University 

Residences, the Residences Office 

also offers help to students seeking 

accommodation in the private sector by 

maintaining regularly updated lists of flats 

and shared houses. 

Places to eat 

Reasonably priced meals and snacks are 

available at coffee shops, cyber cafes 

and restaurants on campus, in academic 

buildings and the University Students’ Union.

introduction to Cardiff Uni.

The staff and cleaners

– loads of natural light, 

shelves/drawers and plug 

sockets. I felt very safe as 

the security was excellent.

Court was an ideal way to 

meet people. The rooms 

were well designed and well 

situated for the local shops, 

town and the restaurant in 

Trevithick Building if you 

get bored of cooking for

were lovely!

Talybont North 

Living in Halls is a great 

way to start university. I 

didn’t have to deal with the 

problems of living on my 

own. There was 24-hour 

security and helpful staff 

and cleaners. My room was 

ideally suited for my needs 

and the on-site facilities 

(laundrette, sports hall/gym 

and social centre) made life 

both enjoyable and easy!

University Hall 

Staying in Halls is the best 

way to leave home! You 

make some great friends 

who are not necessarily on 

your course. The rooms are 

comfortable with plenty of 

storage and well designed 

for study.
