<strong>and</strong> Gorbachev’s ineffective reform policies, specifically perestroika. These factors,<br />
when combined, created a situation which <strong>the</strong> government was totally unable to<br />
recover from. The overall weakness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong> <strong>Union</strong>’s economy <strong>and</strong> perestroika’s<br />
failure at fixing it doomed <strong>the</strong> regime. While many factors were involved, perestroika<br />
was truly <strong>the</strong> final straw that sealed <strong>the</strong> fate <strong>of</strong> Gorbachev <strong>and</strong> his government.<br />
Although Gorbachev tried to save <strong>the</strong> system by enacting perestroika, his reforms<br />
actually brought about <strong>the</strong> opposite result. Because <strong>the</strong> spread <strong>of</strong> democratic ideals<br />
was legalized by Gorbachev’s reforms, dissension was allowed to prosper <strong>and</strong><br />
ultimately brought about <strong>the</strong> coup that forced <strong>the</strong> communists out <strong>of</strong> power.
