2008 SEASON IN REVIEW LaGrange College finished a very successful 2008 season with a 25-20 record. The Panthers became the first LaGrange team to win back-to-back Great South Athletic Conference tournament titles. The Panthers went through the GSAC tournament undefeated, beating top-seeded Piedmont 7-6 with a dramatic comeback. The Panthers became only the second LaGrange team to receive back-to-back NCAA national tournament bids. The Panthers defeated Emory 2-1 in the Fayetteville, N.C. regional for the school’s first win by a team in an NCAA tournament. 2008 Team Accomplishments: Three named to GSAC all-conference team: Amanda Daniel, Holly Hazelwood and Katie Hein Two named to GSAC all-freshman team: Katie Hein and Erica Robinson Five earned GSAC all-academic honors: Amanda Daniel, Leah Flowers, Megan Henry, Kristi Underwood and Kayla Yeargin Team & Individual Rankings in the GSAC: Team 2nd in hits - 344 Jennifer Knight tied for 4th in RBIs - 29 Team 2nd in Home Runs - 7 Team 1st in At-Bats - 1,216 Team 1st in ERA - 2.72 Team 2nd in Opposing Batters Struck Out - 168 Team 1st in Innings Pitched - 296-1/3 Team 1st in Putouts - 889 Katie Hein 2nd in Hits - 52 Jennifer Knight tied for 2nd in Home Runs - 4 Valeree Williams 3rd in Doubles - 12 Amanda Daniel 1st in Wins - 16 Amanda Daniel 3rd in ERA - 2.19 Amanda Daniel 1st in Strike Outs - 128 Amanda Daniel 1st in Innings Pitched - 194-2/3 Amanda Daniel 1st in Games Started - 29 L a G r a n g e - 2 - S o f t b a l l
HEAD COACH JENNIFER CLAYBROOK Jennifer Claybrook completed her sixth season as the Panthers' head coach. In 2008, Claybrook guided the Panthers to their second straight GSAC Championship Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Division III national tournament. The Panthers finished the season 25- 20, their fifth winning in the six years Claybrook has been head coach. Claybrook served as an assistant for two years before being named head coach in 2003. In six years, the Panthers are 155-109 under Claybrook, who has the most career wins by a Panther head coach during the fastpitch era. The Panthers have produced six United States Collegiate Athletic Association All-Americans, four NCAA South All-Region selections and 22 GSAC All-Conference selections since Claybrook became coach. The Panthers also have three GSAC Player of the Year awards and a GSAC Pitcher of the Year award. In 2006, the Panthers were 32-11 under Claybrook. It was the most wins by the Panthers since becoming an NCAA Division III member. The Panthers ranked nationally in all 11 statistical categories kept by the NCAA, the first LaGrange College athletic team to do so. Claybrook was named the GSAC Coach of the Year for the second time. ASSISTANT COACH In her first season, Claybrook guided the Panthers to a 25-17 overall record and the GSAC regular season championship. The Panthers were runner-ups in the conference tournament and the USCAA National Championship Tournament. Claybrook has been in the athletic department for 11 years, first as a student-athlete, as an assistant coach and now as head coach. She has also served as assistant volleyball coach for four years and as an assistant coach for basketball. A Fayetteville, Ga. native, Claybrook was a four-time Georgia-Alabama-Carolina all-conference selection in softball and named to the NFCA First Team South All-Region team in 2000. She was a member of the first basketball team when the program was restarted in 1999. Claybrook was a NFCA Scholar Athlete and a three-time NAIA Academic All-American. She received the school's Eagle Award, while compiling a 3.84 grade point average. Claybrook graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Middle Grades Education and also has earned a master’s degree in Middle Grades Education from LaGrange. In addition to her coaching duties, Claybrook serves as an advisor for the LaGrange College chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is married to Jim Claybrook and they have a son, J.J. ATHLETIC TRAINING STAFF Roy DeMooney DeMooney finished his year as assistant coach for LaGrange in 2008. The father of coach Jennifer Claybrook , he assists in developing the outfielders and as the hitting instructor. He has been a member of the National Youth Sports Coaches Association for 27 years. DeMooney has two world championships and ten top-three finishes in both slow and fast-pitch softball. He has had seven former players to play at LaGrange; including two of his daughters, Jennifer and Jessica. He and his wife, Irene, have five children; Courtney, Jennifer, Clinton, Clayton and Jessica. He has been a small business owner in Atlanta for 32 years. Head Athletic Trainer Rob Dicks, Dicks joined the Panther Athletic Department in 2001, first as an intern and then as assistant athletic trainer. Dicks is a graduate of Valdosta S t a t e University with a degree in Sports Medicine/ Athletic Training and has a Masters in Arts of Teaching. Before coming to LaGrange, Dicks also interned with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Atlanta Falcons. He is certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification and licensed by the state of Georgia. Dicks, a native of Augusta, Ga., is married to the former La'Shanda Collins and they have two daughters, Zykeria and Zakiya. Asst. Athletic Trainer Eva Beaulieu, Beaulieu has been with the athletic training staff for the past two years. She is a graduate of Georgia College & S t a t e University in with a degree in Health Education: Athletic Training. She also received her Master's of Education from GC&SU. Beaulieu worked with a variety of sports while in college and was the athletic trainer for the 2006 GC&SU softball team which qualified for the NCAA Division II World Series.
