8th Edition Graduating Class of 1963, Lake Oswego High School Summer 2012
Editors: Diane Dehner Reynolds and Dianne Fixott Sherlock
As always, it is great fun to see what classmates have been up to over the last year. Prevalent topics included retirement, travel, health
issues and aging parents.
Many of you mentioned plans to attend the 50-Year class reunion in 2013. Although dates have not been set, you will receive a survey
in the next few weeks to assess ideas and ‘druthers to make it a truly special get-together.
Aside from our bonanza of Laker updates found in the newsletter, we particularly appreciate the responses from four classmates about
their somewhat unusual avocations and work. Stay tuned. And now….on with the show!!
..
STRINGING US ALONG
By Bryn Pederson
My music avocation is alive and well. Fortunately the Methow
Valley (Washington) is a wonderful amalgam of professionals,
beginners, and players like me who fill the middle.
I continue to play in two groups: Okanogan Valley Orchestra
and our local Pipestone Orchestra. Pipestone just concluded
its season last weekend with Beethoven's 8th symphony. The
age of the players spans from 12 to 84--great fun! Additionally,
the valley has a high quality summer Chamber Music Festival
featuring players of regional and national renown.
Both Sandy Mackie and I are involved; Sandy as a board
member and I as stage manager. Roll over Beethoven!
IT’S A FAIR TRADE
By Linda Nelson Merz
Working for a trade show exhibit company makes life different
every day because of the cross section of businesses with
which I am in constant contact. I love the creativity, business
challenges and people I meet in my job. It is sort of a
combination of an advertising agency, an architectural design
company and a construction firm.
In creating a trade show exhibit we focus on the corporate
image, marketing efforts, sales goals and ROI (return on
investment) for the owners and/or investors.
As a sales consultant, it is my job to meet with everyone, listen
to what they want/need and get them to think about what their
potential clients need because that is another driving factor in
the design.
The trade show attendee needs to feel that their needs have
been met at the trade show - that is why they are attending---if
my client doesn't take that into consideration, then the booth
will not have the impact nor achieve the ROI it should.

LAKER PLANET 8th EDITION SUMMER 2012
Finally I try to get a budget number out of the decision makers
because it doesn't do anyone any good to show them a
wonderful, creative design that they cannot possibly afford.
Even though someone always knows the "do not exceed"
number---that is one of the most difficult things to get
prospective clients to tell me.
The creative aspects of design and the challenge of marketing
are probably what I like best. Once design and budget are
approved, it goes into production and it is fun to watch the
client come in for the preview. No matter how accurate the
renderings are, the exhibit nearly always has a greater impact
on the client than they were expecting---this is a good thing.
Sometimes I go to the shows to supervise the set up, though
that travel is not very glamorous - lots of early mornings and
late nights at a trade show hall which is neither heated in the
winter nor air conditioned in the summer until the show actually
opens. And it can be lots of “roach coach” food during the set
up---no food stalls are open.
The job also entails a good deal of internet research to find
new potential clients and dialing for dollars. Plenty of rejection,
so the positive responses and referrals are wonderful. We also
help clients manage their trade show programs with on-line
systems and we distribute trade show incentive items.
The stimulation of talking with companies about new products
and services being developed and coming into the
marketplace and the challenge of helping them find new
potential markets for their companies is still something I enjoy
on a daily basis.
Scale models are available for almost all commercial airplanes.
Yes I saw an F-22 raptor fly in Phoenix this winter, and it
definitely simulates the real item. Kits are available for those
who would like to build their own---and for the less
adventuresome ARF's (Almost Ready to Fly) can be
purchased.
PLANE TALKING
By Steve Strecker
About six years ago when I visited a good friend in Lake
Havasu, AZ, he introduced me to the hobby of Radio-
Controlled Airplanes. He invited me to his flying field, and I was
immediately hooked on RC (Radio Control) flight. I had an
interest in my youth but work, family, and other activities left
little time to get a pilot’s license. However, RC planes allowed
me to enjoy flight and build models (a very rewarding pastime).
After experiencing a simulator and trainer I began to
experiment with different airplanes such as pattern planes, 3D
stunt planes, and pylon racers. I now have a fleet of five planes
all ready to fly and special purpose. The technology of carbon
fiber, laser cutting, brushless motors, hi tech batteries and
electronics allows for sophisticated model planes with realistic
flight characteristics.
Flying fields and clubs are present in most cities across the
US. The Salem R/C Pilots Association web link
www.wvi.com/~srcpa can connect you to other clubs in the
Valley. The hobby is regulated by the Academy of Model
Aeronautics. They are an Associate Member of the National
Aeronautic Association and regulated by the FAA and FCC.
Their website www.modelaircraft.org can provide an
outstanding overview of the scope of this hobby.
I have spent many rewarding hours flying, making good
friends, building planes and improving flight skills. It has been
a continuous learning experience with rapid changes in
technology and designs.
For those with the time and desire it can be a rewarding
experience. Yes, I have had my share of crashes but mostly
during the time required to become a capable pilot. The best
part is I walk away from my crashes.
LAKER PLANET 8th EDITION SUMMER 2012
Along the way I went through a Mustang phase when I had two
original ‘65 Mustangs. They were cute cars, but terrible
transportation. Fortunately they were increasing in value, and I
sold both for more than I paid for.
VROOM, VROOM
By Laker “car-maniac” Jim Harries
My transportation decisions have been driven by an intense
dislike for car payments. I am part Irish and a bit less Scottish,
and have studied economics. My dad liked his ‘56 Fords---he
was tall and could wear a hat inside. So when I needed a car
to take to college in 1965, I looked until I found a red ‘56 Ford
country sedan station wagon for $200. Great car for a college
kid, just open the tailgate and toss in your dirty laundry and
bring it home. Easily carries 10 college kids as well. However,
paying 25-35 cents per gallon was a bit tough on a college
budget, and I wished for a more economical vehicle.
After graduating and getting a job, I discovered that I could
now afford the gas bill for the little red wagon. The car was
comfortable, and I upgraded the engine with a better
carburetor, bigger valve heads and a hotter camshaft. This
made it fun to drive. My friends kept bugging me about the
old, ugly car, so I had it repainted and now they admire.
However, my parents’ two ‘56 Fords were getting old and less
reliable---my mom kept borrowing mine while hers were out of
service. Rather than fight, I bought a second car, a burgundy
‘68 T-bird landau, looks like an overstuffed Cougar. Quite
stylish in 1970---and it had air conditioning.
I like to buy, but hate to sell, so I still have both cars.
Unfortunately, they both need engine work and are not in
current use.
I drove to my retirement party in the same car I drove to my
first day of work.
I next discovered I could go to Europe, buy a car and ship
home, and sell at a profit. I had a new Audi and an almost new
fire engine red Mercedes 280 SE. 140 mph on the Autobahn
was no problem. I enjoyed the experience so much I then
bought two BMWs, a red convertible and a metallic burgundy
735 sedan.
I started to remodel the house and concluded I needed a pickup.
So I bought a two year old red ‘96 Ford Ranger which we
still have. I drove the truck to work from Portland to
Vancouver. My wife, Sherrie, needed a vehicle to carry
samples for her interior design business, www.slhdesign.com,
so about two years ago we bought a new red Subaru outback.
When I retired I bought an electric guitar, a motorcycle, and a
‘48 Lincoln Continental cabriolet V-12. The Lincoln is
somewhat valuable, and it gets most of my garage time
attention. I hope to have it on the street one of these years. It
too will be red/burgundy. When my mom passed on, I
acquired her lime green ‘56 Ford sedan that I actually drove to
LOHS in 1962-63. It has a few running gear pieces missing
and occupies a garage space at our home.
So that’s about it. I’ve managed to live without many car
payments. I keep saying we need a garage sale, we have a
five car garage and the poor truck sits outside. Almost every
time I see someone I haven’t seen for a while they ask about
the red wagon, so I guess I’ll have to keep it. I think I could
say goodbye to the lime green car and the T-bird, maybe get
some space in the garage.
LO’S FIRST ROSE FESTIVAL PRINCESS
The Lake Oswego Review, Mar 28, 2012
Council in 2008 after years of work by community
stakeholders. The plan identifies specific projects to address
community needs and correct infrastructure deficiencies.
A key element is reconstruction of Boones Ferry Road to
create safe & attractive sidewalks & pedestrian crossings,
linkages to surrounding neighborhoods, bike lanes, improved
stormwater drainage, & better accommodation of vehicular
traffic. The plan also identifies public parking, gateway
features, & public gathering places as additional components
to serve the community & stimulate private investment.
SUBMITTED PHOTO / PORTLAND ROSE FESTIVAL
LOHS junior Mehek Sethi is the first Lake Oswegan to be
named to the Rose Festival court. She represents the Metro
East area. “I am the first princess ever from Lake Oswego!”
she wrote in an email. “I am very excited and honored… and
can’t wait for this wonderful experience to begin!”
Sethi has a long list of merits qualifying her for the honor,
including being a member of the varsity tennis team, Model
United Nations, Junior Statesmen of America, Key Club,
Spanish Club, CHAP Club, Laker Crew, National Honor
Society and Spanish National Honor Society. She has earned
the bronze, silver and gold awards for Girl Scouting, received
the principal’s award and was selected as student of the year.
She finds time to participate in the peer mentoring program
with special education students and volunteers with community
events…The person she most admires is her mother, Deepika
Sethi. “She has always taught me that if I am going to do
something I should do it to the best of my abilities,” Sethi
said…When asked what she had discovered about herself
during high school, she answered, “I have learned that nothing
is impossible, and once I set my mind on something, nothing
can stop me from getting there.” (Full article at lakeoswegoreview.com)
LAKER PLANET 8th EDITION SUMMER 2012
MARK ADAMS
UPDATE:
The last year? It has featured highs and lows. Highs: Trips to France, Mexico, and Disneyland with family; good health; assorted
groups of valued friends, still going strong; my mom still lives on her own in LO at age 90. Lows: Well, one of my best friends and his
wife retired to California; our dog was run over; and – here’s the worst – my wife and I have recently separated. That last one is hard
on all concerned.
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
Words to live by: “Sayin’ ain’t doin’.” In other words, you can say what you’re going to do all you want, but until you act, it’s just talk.
SUMMER MEMORY:
There have been many, but can I go all the way back to the summer after high school graduation? Late that summer, before college,
Tom Shipley and I took a road trip to Southern California. Made it to San Rafael from LO in 9 hours, driving overnight. Of course, the
speed limit was 70 then, and we might have exceeded it on occasion. Saw a friend there, then drove on to San Marino/Pasadena and
Costa Mesa. Took a ride in a bright orange ‘32 Deuce Coupe, and hit the beach. Good times. Rabbit hunting with Miles and Toller at
my grandfather's ranch near Sherwood.
KITCHEN SURPRISE:
I store vodka in my fridge, but rarely drink any of it. I store batteries in the freezer door to preserve their shelf life. And then there are
the chopped-off human fingers, also in the freezer.
SHOPPING DOWNFALL:
My shopping downfall lies in the area of groceries. I stock up on Wheat Thins and “low fat” Skippy peanut butter on sale. Oh, did you
mean more expensive stuff like shoes or designer jeans? Nah, not me.
~That’s all for now. I wish everyone the very best! Mark
KATHY BARNES Kruse & KEN KRUSE
UPDATE:
Our last year was pretty uneventful. We did lose our Big Bull "Bucky" to a liver ailment, but we have five of his male offspring coming
on strong. "Boots" appears to be forming a pretty respectful set of horns. The rest of the herd is fat and sassy. The horse herd was
lightened a little this summer as our daughter Christy, her daughter Tayler, Randy’s son Ryan and I traveled to Montana on a selling
spree. We flew, and our horses were delivered to the sale, so we played in Montana for three days and watched our horses
sell. Montana is a beautiful state. Ryan, being our GPS, took us to every water park in Billings and finished off with Cabelas. What a
cool time I had kicking back with Christy and the grandkids. We only bought one horse at the sale, and she just presented us with a foal
yesterday. Believe we are going to call him Montana. He joined two others with one more to go. Our retirement is kind of a joke. We
are still involved in the farming but not as much stress in management. It is nice to "drop the ball" when there is a breakdown or repairs.
We get to look the other way when we want to and most everything still gets done. Ken gets really bored tho’ and has to do the
morning inspection of all the fields. He was able to hunt steady from August to December here at home. He hunted antelope, elk and
deer nonstop and still had time for his part of the farming. He guided me to a trophy 35" buck (I will try to get you a picture). It was my
turn to kill the big one this year. Most of the year was taken up with learning how to retire. Think we have a handle on it now. We are
still looking forward to Africa. That is going to be an experience I am sure. Hope our backwoods ways will go unnoticed.
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
My daughter said my favorite quote is “If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much room." However, according to my
three year old granddaughter, it is "What in the hell were you thinkin’?”
~See you at the fiftieth.
RON BENNETT
UPDATE: [Editor’s Note Ron sent commemorative pictures of each of the following mentions; some will be on the website]
• We did a lot of RVing and traveling throughout the year; spent over three month's RVing in New England. Enjoyed the lobster
• Our son Tom got married to Amy in Virginia Beach, VA
• Had our 12th grandchild
• Had melanoma surgery on my face
• Spent time with grandchildren.
• Our son Ryan retired from pitching due to a shoulder problem
• Sold our home in Springfield, Virginia to downsize from a five bedroom
UPDATE:
Craig and I just returned from East Asia. Some friends had a house in Bali and invited us to stay for a few weeks---as long as we were
going to be in the area we decided to take a cruise from Singapore to Hong Kong. The flight was long, but Singapore Airlines treated us
well. We traveled on a Holland America ship which allowed us stops in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China. We were able to see
some of the areas and people that I taught about for years; it was thrilling to actually be there. Bali was beautiful. The people were so
gracious and courteous and their appreciation of their land and the care and respect they show it was inspiring. Rice fields everywhere
and few machines to do the labor. A home was being constructed in the area and women actually carried gravel in huge buckets on
their heads. Nice to be around such happy and friendly people and wonderful food. A great adventure.
UPDATE:
Carolyn and I continued an active schedule of travel. Over the past year we went scuba diving in the Caribbean, took a river cruise in
Portugal, and got to visit New Zealand. Carolyn and I continue to take classes through the local community college and still pursue our
photography hobby. In October our seventh grandchild was born; Nixon is a healthy, happy baby and our sixth grandson. Carolyn
and I continue to enjoy good health, but our bad news was the deteriorating physical condition of my brother Phil who is now under
hospice care with advanced cancer. Adding to family health issues was the discovery of breast cancer in my daughter Patty. She has
had a double mastectomy and begins chemotherapy at the end of this month.
UPDATE:
During 2011 there were a couple of highlights that stood out. The first was that I was honored to ride a bike completely around the
city of Brussels, Belgium in what is called "De Gordel". This is an annual event that combines a series of relatively short riding
sessions with an equal number of drinking stations - allowing all participants enough time to rest up for the next relatively short riding
session and to remain well lubricated in the process. Of course the fact that Belgium is one of the world's top producers of fine beers
is just an afterthought - right?
Following that rather eventful 130-km biking day we flew to Ljubljana, Slovenia for an 8-day stay. Julie's maternal grandparents were
born in Slovenia and this was her first visit to the "mother land." Through some intensive pre-trip research we were able to not only
find the village where Julie's grandfather was born, but also the church (not in the same village) where he was baptized. In between
finding those locations we managed to drive nearly 1000 Km around this relatively small, but beautiful, country and to see enough
sites that we know we want to re-visit.
Work, the four-letter word that doesn't want to go away, has taken up a lot of time - both in 2011 and thus far in 2012. I have been to
China 4 times in less than 12 months and plan to be there 3 more times before 2012 is over. The organization for which I work is in
the final stages of completing the "China Clean Water for Orphans" project that will eventually see our water purification equipment
installed in approximately 630 orphanages in the country. It has been exciting, but demanding, and we're not sure what we will be
doing for an encore.
But, everything else pales in comparison to the time spent with, and joy derived from, our three grandchildren. We manage to see
our two grandsons (Luke and Dillon) at least 3 times a week when not traveling. Ingrid, who lives in Illinois, manages to visit a couple
of times a year and we attempt to reciprocate.
~That's about it from this end for now. Hope everyone is well, or as well as can be expected, and that summer plans are filling up for
each of you. Bill Brockhaus
JIM BUNCH
UPDATE:
Sandy and I drew our 16 years of UK ministry to a close and passed the baton of leadership to our local co-workers. They are taking
the International Student and Couples works ahead. We were given a fantastic send-off in November and arrived in the USA in time
to share Thanksgiving with our families.
We have discovered just how much bureaucracy there is here! We spent the first four months just trying to get our Medicare up and
going. The many roadblocks and complications were a shock after so many years in the UK's Socialized system. We're gradually
figuring things out and with help from a US Senator, avoided one "Lifetime Penalty" from Medicare and are still working on another!
Thank God, we now have A & B and HealthNet Medicare Advantage! Sandy broke her wrist playing volleyball the day our MA
became active! Whew!
We have been living like Gypsies with our daughter Mistie in Beaverton and our son Corey (He is a Pastor at The River Church) in
Vancouver, WA. We're traveling to at least nine Brazilian cities during two months, visiting friends, churches and our son Jonathan.
We are both hoping to get some pressing dental work done here as well! When we return from our Brazilian sortie in August, we
plan to get our own place. Help! Help!! We're looking for an inexpensive 3bdrm rental---a little house near public transport with a yard
would be nice (have no idea if at our age, we could qualify to buy anything).Lord willing, we will resume the kind of "Int. Student and
Couples work", we left in the UK, at Portland State University and other institutions and churches.
LAKER PLANET 8th EDITION SUMMER 2012
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
It's gotta be these promises from the Lord:
Jesus said... “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6)
and "...seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you" (Matthew 6:33),
"...teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you; and surely, I am with you always..." (Matthew 28:20).
SUMMER MEMORY:
Waking up alive in the Summer of '63, several days after Rae Anne Lentz and I were smashed by a 28,000 pound Kenworth Dumptruck!
Really got me thinking! Duh! The turbulent seeds of some life changing stuff!
KITCHEN SURPRISE:
Bunches of stuff! Chimarrão Brazilian Tea, "Durepoxi" Brazilian glue!
BUSINESS/INVENTION:
I really think there should be (and probably are) electronic chips you could attach to your belongings that would activate your cell
phone including the phone itself) to send out a warning when you are separated more than a few feet from anything you own. I'm
sure this must exist in some form. It would make traveling when "jet-lagged" (often trying to nap amongst your bags) less stressful!
SOUVENIRS:
Rocks! More like pretty pebbles, agates etc. and sometimes shells. Location fridge magnets!
SHOPPING DOWNFALL:
When I go to the market I always bring back things Sandy would not ordinarily buy. Sometimes that can get me in the doghouse!
NEXT 100 YEARS:
Glad you asked! If my Eschatological (End Times) Clock is anywhere near correct then we should be encountering some very
difficult circumstances. Things will get more and more complicated as the Lord's return approaches. It may be soon, as the many
signs indicate! However, it could still be out there, even beyond 100 yrs. In my understanding, the "word of God" (the Bible) says that
it is something we all need to deal with while we still have breath. Sounds pretty "urgent" to me! Get Ready! A Free Plug for Heaven!
Uh! Preaching is what we do!
~We will try to be around to see everyone, that still with us, for the 50th next year! God Bless You All!!!
~Everyone can catch us on Facebook at "James Lee Bunch"! Skype - JimSandyBunch1
KATHY CLARK
UPDATE:
I have been wintering in the Palm Springs/Coachella Valley area for a long time on a short term basis, but last fall Friend Bonnie and I
finally pulled the trigger and bought a small house on the golf course at the Indian Palms Country Club in Indio. I am now an official
snowbird resident and will be spending 6 months in southern California and 6 months in northern Idaho. We had a great winter this
year with a lot of warm sunshine and pretty good golf.
No big trips in the planning stage at this point, but did sneak in a trip to Ireland with Grand Circle Travel this past October. We were
prepared for poor weather, but were pleasantly surprised at mild temps and little moisture, so had a GREAT time with a fantastic tour
leader who could have been a stand-up comic. We all looked forward to getting on the bus each day, as we were thoroughly
entertained while learning a great deal about Ireland.
Last winter, not this one, I attended a function at a friend's place in LaQuinta and was surprised to see Mariann Furrer there. Hadn’t
seen her since we were on a traveling bowling team while at LOHS.
We are now back in Bayview on Lake Pend Oreille, looking forward to a great summer at the lake. We have a great view of one of the
most picturesque lakes in the west. While we would love to get closer to town and be on one level, it is hard to contemplate losing
such a peaceful view. If anyone is interested in a great home with a great view, let me know.
~ Best wishes to you all. Kathy Clark
BOB COX
UPDATE:
Still busy and enjoying being busy as well. Linda and I still operate our three Joe Bean's coffee shops; Linda also operates her
Chiropractic and Wellness Center, and I still hold a full time corporate position with Franke that keeps me on the road traveling the
northeast every week. Time obviously is at a premium for us both. The grandchild count is now at seven for the three daughters. My
two and the third by proxy (Linda's daughter) have kept us moving. My four from Carrie delight in making sure Linda counts them as
well even though she tries to really claim only one. Retirement will likely never happen for me until the busy schedule ceases to be
fun. We cannot imagine being idle, but we do enjoy travel for fun and take our trips as often as possible. We took another cruise
this year and laughingly call it our “cruise to nowhere.” We were on the Princess line that departed with intent to see Aruba, Curacao
and their private island, but because of a reported epidemic on board we spent 5 days at sea enjoying ourselves completely, never
getting sick---and it was all free. Even better, we got discounts for the next one for the trouble. We had a family beach trip in July
and also have a fly-fishing trip planned for September in Maine.
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
My wife has always teased me about the words to a Bryan Adams’ song that I have been accused of living by: "I'll be 18 ‘til I die." I
guess that is my motto.
~We may be able to attend the reunion, depending upon the date. I have not been paying attention to any notifications but will check
the website now. Bob
DIANE DEHNER Reynolds
UPDATE:
Our year of travel in 2011 ended with Dennis suffering a minor stroke just after we returned from Puerto Rico last November.
Fortunately physical therapy returned him to what passes for normal in our house but reinforced the fact that retirement is probably a
good idea. His last day at work was May 21 st , and we decided to celebrate with a trip to France. Since he survived that, he may
consider my wish to see Botswana (or I may just join the Brays on their next trip ☺ ) I’m still doing the restaurant reviews…hard to
believe this is my 8 th year. Aside from cranky knees, I’m hanging in there healthwise and started yoga and Pilates. We joined the
digital age with a bang last Christmas and now are the first-time possessors of cell phones, a digital camera, Kindle and an
iPad…yikes!
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
“S/He who knows all, understands all” and “The more things change, the more things stay the same” (I suppose there’s always
“Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.”)
SUMMER MEMORY:
Since my father usually taught summer school, family vacations during the follow-up free time in August generally involved trips to
see relatives in Ohio or cross-country trips by car to ensure the family had seen the U.S. It therefore created an indelible memory
Page 10

LAKER PLANET 8th EDITION SUMMER 2012
when our family (then living in Tennessee) rented a cabin for two weeks at Fontana Village in the Smoky Mountains where my sister
and I has a blast riding horses, learning crafts, swimming and playing cutthroat games of table-top Skittles.
KITCHEN SURPRISE:
I do a ton of ethnic cooking and have all kinds of strange smelling roots, herbs and spices with at least three forms of tamarind.
BUSINESS/INVENTION:
I think teleportation to avoid long plane trips would be just the…well…ticket
VACATION SOUVENIRS:
In the “used to buy” category (before TSA liquid prohibitions in carry-ons), I loved bringing home unusual liqueurs and jams. I also
collected foreign Christmas tree ornaments (and still use hundreds of them). More recently, I bring home minor things like bookmarks
and notepads with names of far-off places.
SHOPPING DOWNFALL:
I have been known to spend over $100 at a whack buying unusual perennials.
NEXT 100 YEARS:
With all the political nonsense and terrorism of the current era, I’m just glad I won’t have to deal with those issues. I’m hoping
medical science will find treatments/cures for some of the most intransigent diseases and syndromes within the next century and that
mental illness is viewed more charitably.
MIKE DENTON
UPDATE:
The last few years have brought us personal changes like the rest of the class. Grandchildren (7), parental care, volunteer work
(primarily the Lakewood Center---my wife Jeanne is on the board) and occasional travel, consume all the time we have. We are
leaving this week for a family reunion in California. My Mother is now 86---my brother, sister and I will be taking her to visit her
brothers and families. Next month we have our own reunion at a resort here in Oregon for the whole Northwest clan. We try to keep
in touch. We still live in LO and plan to stay. We have spent time in other parts of the country but always come back with a big “can't
wait” smile. Other than time in a warmer climate in the winter, we will be here somewhere local.
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
As for mottos and life lessons, words to live by and so on, there's really only one: "Treat others as you wish to be treated."
JANICE DUKE Pindell and DEAN PINDELL
UPDATE:
The Pindell lives continue to be very full. Dean continues in good heart health 5 years out from the transplant all to the praise & glory to
God. Each November he has an annual physical at OHSU. His heart team announced to him at that time, that at the 5th year they
consider "the heart transplant is successful"! Dean's reaction to their timeline strategy "after the first 5 minutes of waking up, I deemed
it a SUCCESS"! He maintains being active as a volunteer here in Albany w/ an organization called LOVE, INC + church leadership +
assisting our son in the Administration side of their business. We are blessed w/ 6 grandchildren now (5 boys & 1 girl). Janice assists in
their weekly care when our daughter-in-law is working in the business + weekly helping out w/ my parents’ needs and health care. They
continue to live at Mary's Woods. Dean loves to invest time in his favorite hobby---'fishing and hunting' as time allows. We're blessed to
be close to all our family (son & family in Philomath/Corvallis, daughter and future son-in-law in Gresham). We attend, cheer, and
celebrate our grandchildren, be it in church activities/responsibilities, sports, plays or swim, bike, run races! It truly is a thrill of our
hearts to participate in all their lives (parents, son, daughter, grandchildren). God Bless YOU ALL!
DON DVORAK
UPDATE:
This last year has been pretty uneventful with the exception of the parent becoming the child and the child taking the place of the 97
year old parent. It’s my pleasure to do so.
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
Time is our most valuable asset, yet we tend to waste it, kill it and spend it rather than invest it. We can earn more money but we
aren’t able to acquire more time. Think of this the next time you wait an hour in the doctor’s office or think about spending time with a
family member or friend.
SUMMER MEMORY:
I don’t want to sound like Pollyanna, but each and every day is a good day summer or winter. I’m just thankful to see a new sun rise
each morning and enjoy the opportunities that lay ahead.
Page 11

LAKER PLANET 8th EDITION SUMMER 2012
KITCHEN SURPRISE:
Nothing strange in our kitchen unless it’s me passing through.
BUSINESS/INVENTION:
Years ago when I was a wee tot, I watched a TV show called ”Science Fiction Theater” that introduced a machine which would replay
all the sounds ever heard by whatever material---wood, rock, etc.---was put inside. Just imagine taking a piece of the White House and
putting it into this contraption and listening to a couple hundred years of history never made public.
VACATION SOUVENIRS:
I don’t bring souvenirs home from vacation because they end up either in garage sales or estate auctions.
SHOPPING DOWNFALL:
I don’t have a shopping downfall, I’m happy with what I already have. However, if I were to find a very nice tool I could purchase for
our business, well, that’s a different story.
NEXT 100 YEARS:
The Lord will return; colonies on the moon and Mars; one world government: one world monetary system: space flight routine for the
general public; cancer and AIDS a disease of the past.
IAN ELLIOT
UPDATE:
The last year was pretty eventful. I think we had just returned from our Historic Boats trip down the Colorado River (See
Historicriverboatsafloat.org to get the whole story). After that I ended up having bone spurs removed from the lower five vertebrae in
my back. Everything worked out fine, and I am back to normal. We received our second grandchild, Malcom, and he and his sister
Nina fill our days and nights when they are around. They are around a lot since I built a house for them here in Ellensburg. I spent
nearly every day since September working on the house and they moved in two weeks ago. Now the next project is to remodel our
other daughter's house in West Seattle so she can sell it and come out whole. God, I'm glad I retired. Sandy and I did get away for
a short vacation to Calif. to see relatives and try out some motel rooms. We had a great time and hope to get away again next
month if the gas prices would only come down. We do like to travel and have a list of places we want to see: Washington DC, Civil
War battlefields, Yellowstone, and so on. It kind of looks like some of the travel might get postponed since there is a chance my
mother (Ethel for those that remember her) might come and live with us for a while. She has been staying between my brother
Grey's in Pendleton and her friend’s house at Welches. She is starting to fade a bit physically but still pretty sharp for 92.
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
I've tried to come up with some words of wisdom but given the state of everything I'm at a loss to even begin to understand how the
world can get so screwed up. It appears my only safe investment is in ammunition.
~I hope all is well for all you LO alums and God smiles on you. Ian and Sandy Elliot
PAT EMIG Kestner
UPDATE:
Just returned from six weeks hiking the Central California coast. The hikes in Big Sur and Pinnacles National Monument (where they
release the condors) were 4-star. We moved this year from Sisters to Bend. Not a long move, but selling and buying real estate filled
most of the time around trips and recreation. Did the downsizing thing, so still looking for things I probably gave away. We are headed
to eastern Washington state next week for a Blues music festival that we've attended two times a year for several years, then summer
at home in Bend. I've got to get organized!
JIM EVANS
UPDATE:
I retired from the Boeing Company six years ago. My commute now is to campgrounds, trailheads and to babysit our
grandchildren. My wife, Ginny, and I bought a 24 ft motorhome when I retired, and we use it several times each year for midweek
camping and hiking with a group of retired friends. We also take it on multi-week vacations, most recently to southern Utah. We have 2
grandsons ages 2½ & 5½, and are expecting a new granddaughter in the next month or so. We see them once or twice a month, and
they are so much fun to be with.
VACATION SOUVENIRS:
Our vacation souvenirs are photographs and memories.
BUSINESS/INVENTION:
I would like to load my motorhome onto a train flatcar and then ride in a passenger car on the same train cross-country to avoid the
multi-day drive to a distant vacation location.
UPDATE
My wife, Nancy and I are getting used to being just grandparents, after having a grandson live with us for 18 months. We are both
healthy and trying to free up our calendars so that we can enjoy our winters in Mesa, Arizona. I’m fishing quite a bit with trips to Alaska,
Montana, the Oregon Coast and right here in Portland on both the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. I’ve also committed to playing
more golf. ~Les
BOB FISH
UPDATE:
The biggest news is that I retired on April 30 of this year. Las Vegas will serve as "retirement headquarters" but we plan on spending
summer months in other places to escape the heat. The Northwest will probably be a prime target for summertime living.
UPDATE:
2011 was a pretty normal year but 2012 started off badly for the Sherlocks. On January 5—all hell broke loose. First thing in the
morning we received a phone call from our eldest grandson, Adam, asking me to come help his Mom (Kaelynn, our eldest), as she
wasn’t feeling well and needed me to take her to the doctor. When I asked to talk to her he said she couldn’t talk. He proceeded to
describe symptoms that sounded like a stroke. I told him to call 911. At the same time my husband was getting ready to take his Mom
to the doctor as she had a cold that was getting worse.
Long story short, Kaelynn had a brain tumor, which was removed on January 13, with no obvious resultant problems. Current MRI
does not show any recurrence at this time.. She is on Chemo and will be until at least December. She was able to go back to work full
time in May.
At the same time my husband took his Mom to the doctor who sent her to emergency with pneumonia. She passed away 2 days later.
Kaelynn was able to attend and participated in the service just 7 days after her brain surgery.
It took until April to start getting back to our “normal” life. We thank God for helping us through this time. We gained a greater
knowledge of the power of prayer. Our daughter had people from all over the world praying for her. Her doctor asked her how many
people she had praying for her—as the outcome of the biopsy and second opinion showed that she had the best possible type and
degree of tumor as possible—and likely to respond to treatment. What a miracle.
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
UPDATE:
Mia and I spent last February and March in Uruguay and Argentina traveling with friends. Highlights included horseback riding in
Uruguay, Spanish School in Bariloche, the Old Patagonia Express in Esquel, penguin colonies near Cabo dos Bahias and the Falls
at Iguaçu. We also heard Placido Domingo sing opera in the streets of Buenos Aires for 150,000 people. But I think I said all this in
the last update. Then home to lots of gardening, fishing and teaching. I'm still an Instructor for a Graduate Program in Educational
Leadership and School Counseling for City University, although this work is winding down. (The work isn't winding down, I am.) This
past winter we stayed home to welcome another granddaughter into this world. Aine (pronounced Anya) was born January 19th. In
March we traveled to Hawaii and visited friends on Oahu and Maui and spent one night on Lanai. We returned home to a mountain
of debris left by two huge storms that swept through our area in March. It has taken us a month the reclaim our garden, but that is
behind us now and we are weeding, edging and planting---work that will keep us busy for months! (Our garden is more than an acre
and it seems to get larger every year!)
UPDATE:
Hi, not a lot to report. In April we flew to Nashville, rented a car and did an old style American road trip. Spent time in Nashville, Oxford,
Mississippi, Memphis, Louisville, Lexington and Frankfort. Grand Ole Opry and honky tonks in Nashville, Shiloh battlefield, blues in
Memphis (also Graceland and Sun Recording studio), day at the track in Lexington and tours of several Kentucky distilleries along the
way. Great weather the entire trip. Last year we spent three weeks in Israel. Don't recall if I reported that. ~Regards, Dick
UPDATE:
Wish I had a lot of happy doings this past year but instead it was a very sad one. My son Rich was diagnosed in Feb 2011 with a rare
cancer, Leiomyosarcoma. It came as a complete shock. OHSU put him in a clinical trial but it was so far advanced that it did no good.
His stomach got very large but I saw how courageous he was, not letting his disfigurement stop him from living as well as he could
those few months. We made several trips to the beach and that gave him some peace. He passed away Sep 27th 2011 at home with
me and his "Auntie" Sheila by his side. I miss him so much. Currently I am about ready to leave my family home in Lake Oswego. My
sisters and I have sold it and now I will move on---not sure what is waiting for me but none of us do.
~I am looking forward to our 50th year celebration and hope to see many of you then.
UPDATE:
We've been busy working on house, jobs, cars, visiting kids, and volunteering locally. A second cousin I haven't met contacted us
for information on a family tree he is putting together. This led to a 5 th cousin we did meet who researches family back to the 1400's.
I now know my family came from Wales in the early 1800's, Great grandpa was a US Congressman, and an uncle was governor of
Pennsylvania. Family-tree-making will take all your time if you let it. We finally finished a lower level family room per interior
designer wife Sherrie's specification. It will be on www.slhdesign.com in a month or so. We have a son in Kauai, so of course we
had to visit. Meanwhile, I added about 200 cubic yards of dirt to the backyard and had a marvelous waterfall built. Now to landscape
the mud lake around it…
LARRY HUGET
UPDATE: I have been retired just over a year, and am actually beginning to enjoy it. The highlight is spending time with our
granddaughter; I see her almost every day when we’re on this side of the mountains. We have a second home just outside of Bend
where it’s mostly work; a little fishing at some of the Cascade Lakes; and very little R&R, but that’s ok as I like to keep moving. In
addition to the annual deer & elk hunts with my two sons, I also enjoy fishing: salmon and sturgeon on the Columbia and Willamette;
steelhead at the coast; a week at Wallowa Lake (will be our 8 th ); and a week at Odell Lake (this is our 2 nd ). Our youngest son (he’s 35)
and his wife will move to Brisbane, Australia the first of July to run one of ESCO’s manufacturing plants; probably a 3-year assignment.
At our age we have mixed feelings, but it’s a great opportunity for them. We’ve been to Australia a number of times and have really
enjoyed it, so we’re planning to visit, but we’re also hoping one of the trips will be to welcome a second grandchild---one with dual
citizenship.
~Speaking of age, while I’m definitely feeling the effects of time and a fair degree of abuse, my health is surprisingly good, so I hope to
see everyone next year. Larry
UPDATE:
I have had a busy and fabulous year. We are reaching completion of a total renovation of our beautiful Pratt and Larson Tile showroom.
What a job! (It seemed like I had to do everything myself.) Go figure...Thank God for the art classes I had back in LOHS. I tell you, it
gave me a real grounding and an ability to cope with a busy life. Pratt and Larson Tile is in it's 30th year this year! 30 years of making
original and beautiful tile for great clients all across the country but most specially right here in Portland. Where does the time go?
Between running Pratt and Larson Tile and my own fabulous business, Sidestreet Gallery, which shows the best local art and
international crafts and then flying off to Puerto Vallarta every winter. I barely have time for myself. What is that about? Have I told you
about my grandchildren? I DON'T HAVE ANY! What's with that? And my back...........
We enjoy going to Sunriver every summer with the whole family.... have to come home to rest and recuperate after all the bike riding,
hiking, swimming, etc.. We spend a lot of time at the coast, crabbing, fishing and enjoying being outdoors. We stay very active,
golfing, walking, going to the gym, working in our large yard and watching grandkids and all their sports activities. We went to Maui in
UPDATE:
I waited to respond so I would have more to say other than I watched the grass grow till I had to cut it. This year marks the first time
in my life that I can pack up and go somewhere without worrying about how long I will be away from the job or the house, as I am
retired and my daughter Kim and grandson Michael take care of the house.
I flew to Atlanta in April to visit my sister Janice and her husband Keith Poole and pick up a car. Keith is a professor at the University of
Georgia. After three days in Athens, GA (Go Bulldogs!), I drove to Dallas, TX to visit my brother Joe and his family. Joe recently retired
as a pilot with American Airlines where he flew overseas routes. He now teaches people that want to get a private pilot’s license. He
says he misses flying the big planes but rules are rules. My youngest sister Chris joined me in Dallas so I had a co-driver for the
remainder of the drive home.
Chris and I left Dallas Monday, April 16, 2012 driving to Albuquerque. We ran into a rainstorm, but nothing like the tornadoes in the
area the week before. Tuesday we arrived in Las Vegas. On Wednesday we got to Reno and to Grants Pass (Chris's home) on
Thursday. It was good to get home Friday afternoon after driving 3,450 miles. I did not realize just how huge Atlanta, Dallas, and Las
Vegas are compared to Portland. I will be traveling more now, but for the really long trips I will fly.
~I am looking forward to the 50th reunion next year and hope I am around to be there. Take Care, Ray Kalberer
UPDATE:
So, here's what I have been doing: I was part of the "Mayor’s protective detail" at Portland City Hall for 5 years, ending last June 30. I
spent the summer and fall catching up on repair jobs and enjoying life. In October my wife and I were blessed with a grandson from my
daughter Colleen and her husband Dana. In February 2012 I was hired as an armed guard in the federal courthouse. I now work
mostly in the bankruptcy court. This was supposed to be a half-time retirement job but has turned into pretty much a full-time job. I am
spending more hours than I wanted, but that will have to do for a while. I am still involved with the Sea Scouts as the committee
chairman of a unit. I mostly raise money for the unit and the Sea Scout Base, although I still do program stuff when other leaders are
not available. You can see some Sea Scout photos (I'm in some of them) at our website: www.sss601.org. Go to the photo gallery
and click on photos---go to 2011. In the bottom left hand photo of the sailboat: I'm the old guy all the way forward on the portside!
UPDATE: My wife Barbara and I spent last Christmas again in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. In September we took a wonderful threeweek
trip in Europe, beginning with several days in Amsterdam and ending with a few days in Prague. In between, we cruised the
UPDATE:
Retirement continues to provide time to pursue many interests, including reading for pleasure (as opposed to reading/rereading
assigned texts and student essays), Georgetown community activities, volunteer work, gardening, museum hopping, and playing the
piano. Pete is still teaching full time at GU and writing, but we’re anxious to travel again in Italy as soon as he can take a break. Our
daughter and her husband are returning to the DC area this summer after two years abroad, so we’re looking forward to helping them
settle back in as well. I had a wonderful lunch with several classmates – a mini-reunion of sorts – when I was visiting my mom in
Portland last month and am looking forward to our 50 th next year, although that number is rather daunting!
UPDATE:
The sad part first - as I type this I am in the process of going to Corpus Christi to be with Rusty for what will likely be the last days of his
mother's life. She is 89 and has been refusing food and medication for several days. He has been there with her since last Friday.
In June 2011 the dentist we both worked for decided to sell his practice and informed us there wasn't enough room in his building for
the buyer and us. It was a bit of a shock at first. Then a great dental practice came on the market and we bought it. So, just when he
and I and our friends were talking about retiring we went from working 2 days a week to four days a week and managing a really busy
practice and a staff of 6. Eight if you count us (and sometimes we need the most managing!!!) We are really enjoying it, and it has
turned out to be the perfect move for us. Three of our staff members are favorites who have worked with us before so every day is like
coming home. We really are having a blast. Visit us at rustykirklanddds.com.
Everything else is about the same. Garden is growing like mad; Rusty and his great friend John make fantastic music together in
Rusty's studio; my kids are doing great; and next winter the practice will be in a place where I can do more quilting again. My oldest
grandson (14) graduated from middle school with honors, was inducted into national honor society and earned his second degree
brown belt in karate all in about two weeks at the end of the school year. We are very proud of him.
Zakk my Australian Shepard is getting better and better at agility and it is really good exercise for me. Just watching him makes me
smile. There may be an entry level competition in our future if the handler (me) can get the signals correct. I've been known to confuse
him and stop the whole process!!!
UPDATE:
We've enjoyed the past year, the first as full-time retirees since Isae retired from Azumano Travel in May, 2011. Like most people,
she wondered about filling the time; then discovered it was easy to fill with none of the stresses that come from working at the desk.
We've always enjoyed walking and hiking together so that's on our calendar virtually every day we can get out. My parents (now
married almost 73 years) relocated to an assisted living facility in Lake Oswego a year ago and we visit them 3-4 times every week.
My brother, Mike, moved into their old condominium so we had a seemless transition there. Our three grandchildren (ages 8, 6 and
4) live in Riverside, CA, and their "Oregon vacation" month is July. Last year, Isae and I flew down and brought the two oldest,
Darren and Jacob, up on the Coast Starlight train, along with their two cousins. Great trip...about 30 hours...and it kicked off a busy
UPDATE:
O.K. Here it goes. Am still working but less (as time speeds up, I slow down). I can't imagine ever "retiring” because the true joy for
me is in the making of things and seeing them come into fruition. This passion spills over into my life in all directions such as designing
and building my home and gardens, periodically redesigning them and more, but most of all, painting and sculpting. My largest
commission of late was two horse tile murals (one was 54" x 30") for an enormous horse and training dressage "ranch" recently built in
Wilsonville. Now I am working on a couple of heads for the Laura Russo Gallery group show in August.
UPDATE:
I just returned home to Denver after taking care of my brother Bill (class of '73) for over a month. After 2 years and a stem-cell
transplant he is still very sick with the side effects of leukemia but we are planning on him being back on top of the world. It has now
been 138 days from transplant day which is excellent. He and his fiancée, Jan Koenig (also from his class at Lake Oswego) have been
caring for Gary and Elaine Lord's home on the lake for over 2 years during their travel times. The Lords have extended their home to
Bill and Jan full time because of their special friendship, and they welcomed me to stay there also. It was lovely being back on the lake
enjoying all its beauty once again.
I was to taking Bill to OHSU for treatments after the stem-cell transplant (which came from Ireland) along with caring for him during the
day. My second week there he took a turn for the worse so I stayed up at the Hospital with him all day then his lovely Jan would come
up for the entire evening after work.
I had hoped to see Pat Cooney and Karen May while in Oswego but my time was best spent with Bill and his needs. My husband Bob
and Gary Lord had a ball jamming together. Gary kept saying he wished Norm Sundholm was there to really get the party going. Such
a fun break with so much laughter.
Bob stopped at the Lords on his way down to Medford to stay with my 92-year-young mother (when her husband went back east to be
with his kids for 11 days_ and returned to the Lords for a fun-filled day and evening. He then drove straight through to Denver (23
hours) to get ready for his Colorado shows, of which he has over 300 for the year. Besides performing shows most weekdays, we are
also busy setting up the backyard (we sleep in our beach house for usually 4 months) and fighting all the problems that come with
owning a swimming pool. This is our life until we once again go to Medford for Bob to perform (usually around 12 shows) which also
allows us to stay and visit with my parents. This is a twice a year event, one week over Mother's Day and then again the week of
Thanksgiving.
~Best to all our classmates. For more information anyone can go to my husband's web site to read all about us: www.bobhaworth.com
I bought a home and have been very busy fixing it up inside and out. Really enjoying it. Didn't know I could do so much on my own. My
friend Pam Gardner told me something this past year that I had to write down---she told me that I am “a very courageous woman and
that things and people do not make me special....I do.” I took a month's vacation in California visiting my best friend Mary McCool. And
numerous friends. Just my dog ‘Muggins’ and me; we really had a fun time. My new neighbors wondered if I was every coming back.
UPDATE:
In the past year: Lynn and I celebrated 45 years of marriage. Our daughters rented a house for a week in Ashland, where we were
joined by daughters, their husbands, a favorite sister-in-law, our granddaughters and a couple of friends. This was our first trip to the
Ashland Shakespeare Festival and all of us enjoyed it--even the granddaughters. Currently, I have drastically cut back at work,
essentially just covering vacation and sick relief. To celebrate, we took a trip to Paris, arranging a home exchange for a month with a
Parisian couple who wanted to spend time in San Diego. It has been a ball. Of course, neither of us speaks French, though we did try
to learn some survival phrases before we left. The lack of language has greatly added to the mystery on how each day plays out and,
especially, what will we really get for dinner.
UPDATE:
• Been doing a lot of traveling: RVed to California for the Vietnamese New Year and spent a month there.
Went to Fort Campbell Kentucky in June for the 50th Anniversary of the 5th Special Forces and saw many old Army
buddies [Picture on website]. Must say I was very impressed with the quality of the Soldiers and their equipment. Spent
August in Germany for my granddaughter Katelynn's birthday and then off to Denmark to find my great-grandfather and my
family name’s origin. My great-grandfather came to the US as Jens Christian Christian Christiansen, a Mormon, but there
where too many Jens Christiansens in his area of Utah so he changed it James Meiling (Mejling being the name parish he
was from). [Picture on website]
• Spent all of September in the woods around John Day, East of Mt. Hood archery hunting for Elk and Deer. Saw a few
animals and got one shot off at an Elk but no meat for the freezer. [another picture]
• November Huong and I went to San Antonio, TX for my Grandson's graduation from Air Force Basic training.
• Spent Christmas and New Year’s in Miami and helped my daughter Karen and her husband Lyle pack up their house for the
move to Salt Lake City. Realized at my age I do not have too many more moves in me or at least doing the packing and
lifting. Also there was my oldest daughter Khuyen and her Husband Thorsten and two girls Lillian and Katelynn. Took them
all to Disney World for a couple of days. [Picture] Have a lot of fun with the grandkids around the pool and beaches.
• Spent January to March 2012 traveling in the RV went to LA for the Vietnamese New Year then over to Desert Hot
Springs then Quartzite AZ, then to Apache Junction AZ down to Tucson for a Bus Rally. While in Tucson I visited an old
Army buddy. Back to the Phoenix area and Sedona, worked our way up to Salt Lake City to visit my daughter and her
husband. Then off to Reno to visit one of my wife's friends. The weather kept getting colder as we were moving North; it
snowed on us in Reno and we made it to Klamath Falls for the night expecting more snow. In the morning we made a fast
run over the Mountains to Medford so we could get back on I-5 and home. Moped around home because of the weather
wishing we had stayed in the SW longer.
• Made another run to SLC April to see my daughter's Bikini Fitness contest---she took second and a month later she was in
a second competition and got 1st and 1st overall.
• Been trying to catch a Salmon but the weather and river condition have not been helping.
Last spring my husband and I took off for the east coast with our 35 foot 5 th wheel. We worked in a campground in Rockport, ME for 2
months and worked in two different campgrounds owned by the same company. To make a long story short, after the 4 th manager we
decided it was enough and severed our ties and went to Nova Scotia (part of the reason for the trip). Nova Scotia was wonderful with
friendly people and the best seafood! [Picture on website] Only thing better is Dungeness Crab!!! Then we meandered down the East
Coast. We were privileged to have experienced a tornado (the one that hit Tuscaloosa), the earthquake (the one that damaged the
Monument) as we were only 10 miles away from the epicenter, and Hurricane Irene (we were supposed to be in Cape Hatteras).
Needless to say we did not go to Cape Hatteras, and the only damage we suffered was from the tornado (a broken skylight from hail).
Someone was watching over us and kept us safe. It was a wonderful trip and took us 5 ½ months. Our house really looked like a
mansion after spending so much time in a small space!
We have spent the winter in Sierra Vista and are getting ready to head out to the NW! We plan to visit Zion and Yellowstone National
Parks on the way and then to Spokane for some much needed grandkid (and kid) time. Both of our kids live in Spokane. Then we will
head over to Cape Disappointment State Park in WA for the month of Aug where we have volunteered to be camp hosts. We think it
should be a fun experience. If anyone is in the area just look us up at the campground. After that we will head down the OR coast and
over to Medford area and catch Peggy Grimm McInnes for a couple of days, then back to home. Spend a month or so home and head
over to Rockport, TX where we have a 3-month job for the winter. We are already looking for a place to go for the next summer.
UPDATE:
Bill retired last December, and we have moved to Tucson, Arizona. For some men it is a "life change" filled with anticipation and
worries like "what will I do with my time?”. Bill was initially like that but after he won a small local golf tournament, things fell right into
place. We are members at El Conquistador Club. Our house came with a golf cart, and we can drive over to the course. I am trying to
get back into golf...but was better in my youth and should probably stick to horses...but no hunt, and I do love golf...if I could just avoid
hitting the ground when I swing...tee hee.
On a family note, my stepmother, Lareen took advantage of Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act on March 28th. She had a rare form of
Melanoma, tried chemotherapy, but couldn't stand it so went home to 420 Ridgeway to die with Hospice. She was 77. She is survived
by my Dad, 99. My sister Shelley and her husband Blaine now care for Dad. He sometimes gets confused but other times remembers
everything...even things from his war experience...it has been quite fascinating having him around. Shelley and Blaine drove him to
see my Aunt Pat in Laguna Hills, California and then over to see us. Dad loved the sunshine.
I have my horse Colleen with me in Arizona...but the stabling is quite different...everything is dirt and sand...and it gets hot. There is no
"hunt" here, so a few friends and I ride in the "wash" or trailer the horses to the Santa Catalina Mountains where there are beautiful
trails with cactus, wildflowers and mountain views.
Bill and I are going to babysit our granddaughter Olivia in Colorado, while Amy and her husband go to a medical conference. We will
haul Colleen. There is a stable up there where at least she can be "turned out" everyday in a large paddock. We may leave her there
for the summer months. Then our other granddaughter, Isabel (my son's oldest) will fly over from Houston for a week. Then Bill and I
will fly or drive to Lake Oswego to look after Dad to give Blaine and Shelley a month’s break.
UPDATE:
This past year: Continue to work as a pediatric physical therapist in Early Intervention with infants (mostly) and toddlers in Beaverton.
(I'm the only PT so am quite busy, but I continue to love what I do and the people on my team so plan to do this for 1,2,3 (?) more
years or so.) Thought I was headed to Alaska this May for my older daughter's graduation ... (PhD in Marine Biology: We're so proud
of her!) but turns out this will be next May. My younger daughter, Kim, having changed colleges and majors (Japanese to Veterinary
Med.) is hopefully soon graduating from the University of Portland. Swimming, reading, gardening, and ongoing care of the house
and my beloved “Captain” (dog) seem to take up the rest of my time as well as get-togethers with friends and an occasional getaway
to the beach or central OR. It's been a very good year ... and I hope the same is true for all my classmates!
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
"Laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live." Unknown
SUMMER MEMORY:
Walking my little brother across the golf course to swim in the lake; swimming out to the logs and talking about the boys on the dock
with Yoli Parker Pardo; (After all these years, only my arms tan; I think it's all the exposure hanging over those logs with my face down,
whispering lest someone knew whom we had a crush on, etc.) walking the railroad tracks with Karen May, again sharing little secrets
and dreams of the future. My summer memories always include the many days spent at Lake Grove Swim Park with friends.
VACATION SOUVENIRS:
Like to bring back "little things" reflective of the geography... Treasure the tiny shells from a beach in Cabreton in So. France from a
long ago visit to a French friend. My children loved looking at them when they were younger; still marvel at how different they are
from NW shells.
SHOPPING DOWNFALL:
Welllll ... I do like leather.... Have a few more purses and shoes than I really need. :)
~Thank you for continuing to keep us all updated; I truly appreciate all the effort this must entail and always look forward to the
updates. Josie
UPDATE:
I must admit I was reluctant to participate in the Newsletter; as the last year has been rather uneventful. We haven't traveled out of the
state, and (for the first time) have made very few trips to our beach house. However, in the Fall we are planning a family trip to
Disneyland, and I have a girls’ trip to Maui on my radar for the summer of 2013.
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
SUMMER MEMORY:
In the summer of 62' I moved to Lake Oswego… that was a good summer for me. After a month touring Mexico I came home to swim,
tan, and make new friends in a great community.
KITCHEN SURPRISE:
You asked the wrong person about surprising things in the refrigerator. The only thing that is surprising about our refrigerator is how
much I manage to cram into it! Does a jar of Major Grey's Chutney or some hummus count? I doubt it. That's about as strange as it
gets for me.
BUSINESS/INVENTION:
Trip to Sudan and Uganda in Oct/Nov. Wrote a small book which is on Amazon about an African lady I admire:
"Whispered Prayer: Mama Susan Tabia and the Orphans of Sudan." We took 800 of the little books to Sudan for Mama Susan to
distribute and use to raise funds for the orphanages. Probably the next trip won't be for a couple years. We are talking about doing a
family trip with a couple of the older grandkids, my son, my brother and my sister. That will be fun. Not sure if we will go all the way to
Sudan, may just do Uganda and maybe Tanzania.
UPDATE:
My last year has been very exciting. Though I have been single for 30+ years, I met a wonderful man online, and we are planning a
wedding soon. The first meeting was so comfortable we knew this was to be something beautiful. No date has been set for the
wedding, but it should be this year.
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
This anonymous quote describes my man perfectly. Don’t let anyone tell you there’s no life after 60. That’s when it begins for me.
"Every woman deserves a man who calls her “baby,” and kisses her like he means it. Every woman deserves a man that
holds her like he never wants to let her go and doesn’t cheat or lie. Every woman deserves a man who wipes away her tears
when she cries, and doesn’t make her jealous of other women, instead makes other women jealous of her. Every woman
deserves a man who is not scared to let his friends know how he really feels about her, and lets her know every day how
much he truly loves her."
Ron is all of this and more. I’m adding a couple very special pictures to share with you [see website].
SUMMER MEMORY:
My summer memories always include the many days spent at Lake Grove Swim Park with friends.
VACATION SOUVENIRS:
The one thing I collect is coffee mugs; I now have so many I can hardly find room for them. I would like to clean them out, but when I
try, I remember the time and place I got each one or remember the times my friends and family have given me special ones.
SHOPPING DOWNFALL:
Since I am a woman, my shopping downfall is like many…SHOES. But, I have a special place in my heart for anything that’s labeled
“SALE or CLEARANCE.”
CAROL RICE Rush [via her daughter Ginger’s communication with Yvonne Quick]
UPDATE:
Since late May, Carol has been hospitalized with a variety of serious health issues and her daughter has been sending updates
through Yvonne. Ginger sent the latest medical report in late June saying “My Mom Carol Rush has too many health issues for any
doctor to fix. Her kidneys are giving out, her heart is weak and her lungs keep filling up with fluid. They are saying that all that can be
done now is comfort care or hospice care.”
Not positive for the USA and the world as a whole. Very worried about the future for others that will be around. Looking at history---
our group, this generation, us, being born in ‘44 and ‘45 in America – we have enjoyed the very best of all of history. Education, food,
housing, freedom---the list just goes on and on. We should be called the lucky generation. Sure we had Nam, riots, cold war but
when you look at what we all have had and still have compared to 100 billion who came before us – we sure have had it the best –
all. Very hard for the world’s future to go up from our period. I think it is Adele (whom I just love) who sings we almost had it all. I
think our class has had it all
TOM (ROGERS) RODRIGUES
UPDATE:
Based on the fact that life is 10% of what happens to me and 90% how I react to it; I would have to say this past year was good.
Everyone is healthy, making the best of difficult times is always good for character and it ain't over until the Fat Lady sings.
SUMMER MEMORY:
I am looking forward to summer. It has been years since I felt my bones have dried out from the ever-present rain and overcast. We
had hot days as kids and there was nothing better than lying on the dock, "working" on the tan, cooking our little brains out and then
diving into the lake. And we thought life was tough.
BUSINESS/INVENTION:
Maybe that is why the best invention is to be born old and immature and then grow young and mature, with great looks and hard bodies
so we can really appreciate youth. We can be vain and mature at the same time, right?
VACATION SOUVENIRS
So if I took a vacation to my youth, what souvenirs would I bring back? My first thought is my dog but on second thought, I would bring
back better notes. So much of it was an existential blur with little reasoning besides: "Hey that sounds like fun!" Today, kids have their
whole life documented on their smart phones and Facebook. That is too much information.
~ Maybe the patchy memory isn't so bad.
JOHN RUSSELL
UPDATE:
• Well, Mary and I do keep in touch with Frank and Shari Lord. We were there in Silverton for dinner a month ago. Their four
kids are real pistols.
• Our three kids are each married and homeowners, and they’re all in Portland, or as Mary says, “only a bike ride away.” Two
of the three have kids, so we’re up to four grandchildren, ages four to thirteen.
• Last October my term expired as chair of the Board of Trustees of my college. Now -- lots more free time.
• I still own office buildings in downtown Portland, all of which I love. Commercial real estate is still suffering, though, from the
excesses just prior to 2008. It may be a while until equilibrium is reached.
• Mary and I have a place on St. John in the US Virgin Islands that we retreat to in the winter, and a place in Maine that is a
family reunion focus in August.
~Looking forward to the Big 50! John Russell
Not much to report from here. Celebrated my 67th birthday with 3 days of good single-track dirt bike riding at China Hat. We will go to
motorcycle roads and gawk at the big rocks.
I have not done a lot this last year...worked mostly on improving my golf game which is still bad but fun. I joined the Crooked River
Ranch Ladies Club this year and enjoy that. Usually Jack (my husband) & I play 9 holes every day we can. I love the outdoors; our
course here at Crooked River Ranch is beautiful and fun to play. We have made a lot of new friends over the last year. The most
exciting thing that has happened this year was Feb. 29th when my youngest daughter presented us with twin granddaughters. I stayed
with her for 2 months helping her adjust to her new life style. They are the apple of grandpa’s eye.
UPDATE:
Quick update: We started 2011 with a ski trip to visit our daughters in Aspen and Telluride CO. February found us in
Vietnam/Cambodia touring with a grade school friend (from Beaverton prior to LO days). Upon our return spent a couple weeks in
Kona, Hawaii with friends. Played golf for the summer in Salem with brief trips to Washington, DC to visit our oldest daughter and a tour
of the Olympic Peninsula. Early fall flew out to the Rockies to trek along the Continental Divide with my youngest daughter. We stayed
at 10th Mountain Division Huts a most memorable and scenic experience. In November completed a trip of a lifetime to Nepal with the
entire family---very special and a trip that had been promised for some time. [Trip pictures on website] Visited several world heritage
sites and saw Mt. Everest up close (one of my bucket list items). We celebrated Xmas and New Year in Aspen with the family.
UPDATE:
There is not much to tell. I am working two part-time jobs to stay busy and pick up some golf money. I work as assistant janitor in our
church about 12 hours/week. I like the people, and the work is relatively mindless with the occasional interesting maintenance problem
to add variety. I also got my insurance license in February 2011 to help a friend of mine cope with his overflow. It has also been
interesting, and I have even sold some life and health insurance! My wife and I continue to visit our children and grandchildren
regularly each year even though it means a lot of travel. I continue to work out regularly, but that gets to be a little less each year as
my motivation declines.
~That's about it. Kent
UPDATE:
Over the past year I have become very involved in my new religion. Many trips to Pakistan and Afghanistan have brought me closer to
my new Muslim life. Most of my time has been engulfed in Muslim classes and field training. The pure dedication of the Muslim people
is overwhelming. It is such a rush to place your religion over everything else in life, including your own. Besides, as life draws to a
close, the 72 treasures that await me could not be resisted.
GREG TOLLER
UPDATE:
All is fine with the Tollers in Kansas. Both Barb and I continue (as I suspect a majority of us do) to struggle with health issues with our
parents. I am still working most days -- have been involved in a new project which is absorbing a lot more of my time that I had
imagined it would. With that said, I get to spend plenty of time outdoors either hunting or fishing or working around the place. We are
down to 3 horses and 4 dogs, but still have more than enough chickens and a few ducks that need to be fed and looked after. I say
every year that I am through with gardens, but did it again this year. Our kids are fine, we have given up hope of grandchildren anytime
soon – if ever. Barb stays as busy as she wants and has now gone back to school to get certified in integrative nutrition so she can
document all of the things I eat and shouldn’t. We will be in LO in late June and look forward to seeing everyone next year for the 50 th .
Now that is a freighting number!
~My best to you. Greg
UPDATE:
Daughter Claire now has two daughters, Dorothy age 3 and Alice age 7 weeks. She is on maternity leave from Stanford University
Hospital where she is both an instructor and emergency room doctor. Very Proud. Also proud of Anne who lives in Seattle with her
~JT
PAT TURNER Wilshusen
UPDATE:
Last February we escaped to Gearhart for a quiet weekend at the beach and were awakened about an hour after going to bed with
the news of the Japanese earthquake and the instructions to evacuate the beach by 5 a.m. All was well, of course, but the
adrenaline did flow for awhile. Later in the spring Bob and I flew to Atlanta and drove up through
the Carolinas and returned from D.C. Our country has so many beautiful, interesting things to see and the spring is certainly a lovely
time to be in the south. We loved seeing the hundreds of outdoor sculptures amidst the flowers and rolling lawns of Brookgreen
Gardens, learned a lot about Carl Sandburg at his home, felt royal at the Biltmore Estate and so much more. Our other trip was to
Colorado in July to attend Bob's 50th HS reunion. We both enjoyed our time in Boulder and tucked in a little sightseeing besides.
Most of all we have a new appreciation for good health and the value of good friends. Eighteen years ago Bob lost his bladder to
cancer. While he has had issues to deal with, we have been so blessed that his general health has been good. In August he had
some complications causing his kidneys to begin to shut down. We've had three trips to the emergency room and have been eating a
very low potassium diet which is a challenge as it is SO different from the whole grains, fruits, veggies, etc. that we'd been eating.
Thankfully, his system seems to have stabilized some in the last month and he has the energy to be back working around the house
and able to take walks with his friends again. We are hopeful. Good health is really one's wealth! Family is, too, and we are
expecting our 4th and final grandchild in July. Having both our daughters and their families close by is a great blessing.
SUMMER MEMORY:
Where are those "lazy, hazy days of summer" that we enjoyed as kids? We'd ride our bikes downtown and get new library books,
drop by Wizer's fountain for a cherry coke and a butterhorn. Sit in the sun and cool off in the lake or by running through the sprinkler.
Life was slower and more tranquil. I could use a few days like that now.
BUSINESS/INVENTION:
As far as inventions go, I'm waiting for someone to invent windshield wipers that really do a super job in all weather conditions.
Thinking of glass cleaners, I still have an original Cler'et squeegee for cleaning the shower walls and windows and use it daily thanks
to the ingenuity of our LOHS classmates!
Page 28

LAKER PLANET 8th EDITION SUMMER 2012
VACATION SOUVENIRS:
The best souvenirs from our trips are my journals and pictures but we've also bought small ornaments for our Christmas tree and
sometimes books from the areas we've visited.
SHOPPING DOWNFALL:
I'm not much of a shopper, but at this time of year I love to select some additional plants for the garden.
NEXT 100 YEARS:
Life will always have its challenges and problems but I'm hoping some of those facing us will be solved by 2112. I'm guessing that in
100 years, medicine will look back on chemo and radiation and wonder "what were they thinking?", like we look back on bloodletting
and magic potions. Hopefully they will have come up with better treatments for cancer by then. I would hope that the pendulum
would have reached a more moderate center so life was less rushed and
communications were more personal. I pray that they'll be better stewards of the earth and of wealth distribution.
~Blessings to all, Pat Turner Wilshusen
UPDATE:
This past year brought its joys and sorrows. My Dad passed on last April. We sold his LO home and after making trips to Oswego for
the past 45 years, it seems strangely sad not to visit the old stomping grounds any more. Our daughter lives in the Beaverton area so
we do get to Oregon. As we grandparents love to do, we babysat the grandchildren in February while daughter Kristen and her
husband went on a sailing trip to the British Virgin Islands. We continue to enjoy attending their soccer, lacrosse, hockey and baseball
games and activities. Norm and I were able to spend some time re-visiting some Oregon landmarks - the Pittock Mansion, OMSI,
Multnomah Falls, and Timberline. Washington activities included several trips to Lake Chelan and lots of snow skiing this winter (by
Norm). I continue to spend lots of time in the garden and we both enjoy playing bridge and the theater. In April we spent Spring Break
in Maui with our son, Erik and his family. We are now preparing to take a road trip to CA to visit friends and family and enjoy the wine
country along the way. Further travel plans include a river trip in Europe. I just received an email from Oregon State University
reminding me of my 45th reunion coming up this fall. Hopefully there will be a good turnout of LOHS/OSU grads. We can "prep"
ourselves for our Laker 50th!
~Thank you to Diane and Dianne for your hard work in putting together the newsletter. Nancy Vaughn
BRUCE WARD
We are thinking of bicycling Burma, Myanmar, next year -- which I am sure will be our roughest in SE Asia, but we hear the people are
wonderful, other than the terrible dictatorship - hey Hillary went there this year and maybe that will help…I have run into an Aussie
married to a Burmese and running a 4 room B & B in Yangon (which we will have to fly into) and also a bike touring company. Thus I
think I will be able to plot a good ride around the country for the two of us. We are still enjoying the independent travel -- although there
are times when someone is finding your room and restaurant, etc. etc. is sounding more appealing. We always take January and
February as Mary Lou’s catering business slows down as does real estate. I have not been able to figure out a way to get longer than
28 day visa so we may have to end our trip with a month on the island of Koh Samui in Thailand -- a very nice way to end a trip!!!
JANET WILLIAMS Kurkoski
Greetings to everyone. It's always nice to hear about what's going on with classmates. Here's my two cents worth for the year:
UPDATE:
Learning to play the harp has been something I've wanted to do since I was a little girl, so this year I finally took the plunge. We're
never to old to learn, they say. My teacher is patient, and I enjoy learning this new skill. Don't look for me on the concert stage,
though. Have any of you started playing an instrument at this stage of life? Does anyone play the harp? I'd love to hear your
experiences. Also, we've been doing some traveling this year. We went to Hawaii for Christmas, along with two of our three sons and
the grandkids. Having children who live out of town gives us reasons to travel. This year I've been to Tokyo to see our oldest son and
his family (9th trip there--I know Narita airport quite well), San Diego twice to see our middle son, and Seattle a few times to see our
youngest. We're looking forward to a trip to Israel with a group from my church in November. If anyone has tips or experiences to
share about Israel, please let me know.
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
The Prayer of St. Francis has been my "guiding light," so to speak, for many years. It's been helpful during tough times at work and
with family.
"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy."
SUMMER MEMORY:
My best summer memories come from the years we lived in Lake Grove. Riding my bike all over, picking blackberries, swimming at
the park, family picnics, nickel ice cream cones, playing baseball with my brother in the yard. We were fortunate to grow up in a
beautiful community, in an era when we had the freedom to roam.
~Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy year. Can't believe next year will be the 50th.
JOHN WILLIS
UPDATE:
I have been enjoying life with my wife, my family and my friends.
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
“Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but playing a poor hand well.”
SUMMER MEMORY:
No school.
BUSINESS/INVENTION:
A “People Wash”: A shower for your home that soaps, scrubs, rinses and dries in less than one minute, same principles as a Car
Wash
VACATION SOUVENIRS:
Nothing tangible, just memories
NEXT 100 YEARS:
I predict that the two Dian(n)es will run out of strange questions to ask their classmates.
UPDATE:
Walt and I took our first trip to Europe in May of last year. We had pretty much decided that this trip would have to wait until our next
life, but then we decided to take the bull by the horns, and go for it. Are we ever glad we did! We did a ton of walking; averaged at
least 6 miles a day. We could do it now, but glad we didn't postpone it for a few years. We were on a tour for the most part, but also
had two days on our own in Rome and London. We spent six days in Italy, two in Switzerland, two in France, and four in London. We
loved it all, but Italy was definitely our favorite. We would go back there in a heartbeat! We also spent time in Florida and fun times
with our cousins in Camas, WA.
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
Well, I personally like the one that says, "Don't judge a man until you have walked a mile in his moccasins." Since that can never
happen I do my best to not judge others, but I still need to improve in this area.
SUMMER MEMORY:
Believe it or not picking strawberries, blackcaps, and beans, and saving the money for school clothes and college. That may sound
weird, but I think I really learned the work ethic from my times in the bean and berry patches.
KITCHEN SURPRISE:
Nothing really surprising there as Walt does 90% of the cooking and has most gadgets. However, I still do make pies from scratch,
and so I have a pastry blender. Also enough booze for a well stocked bar
BUSINESS/INVENTION:
Well, I could think of nothing so I asked Walt. He said he would like an automatic electronic device that would tell a person when
politicians are lying.
VACATION SOUVENIRS:
I collect miniatures in old print cases so anything small I like. I also collect thimbles of different states and countries we go to. I only
need ones from Delaware and Rhode Island. We are going to those two states this summer as Walt has been to all 50 states, but
those are the only two states I haven't been to yet. But Walt's downfall is watches; he has 18! What is the point? You can only wear
one at a time!
SHOPPING DOWNFALL:
My shopping downfall is traveling; that is where I spend my money. I'm not a huge souvenir or clothing buyer.
NEXT 100 YEARS:
Oh, my; now I am the voice of doom and gloom. If we don't do more about the environment, I question whether the earth will last
another 100 years. Guess none of us will have to worry, but I do worry about our grandchildren. Walt says that Medford will have
beachfront property!
~This is always fun to do. I love reading what other people come up with. Take care. Love and Peace
