American Guild of Organists - Lancaster Chapter
Issue #1 August 2011 64 th Year
WOW, WHAT A YEAR!
Our Lancaster AGO’s 2010-
2011 season gave us numerous
opportunities to get together with
fellow music lovers as we learned
more about the organ. In September
we traveled to Marietta and played on
the restored Henry Knoff organ
followed by an enjoyable tour of
Columbia Organ Works. Our October
meeting had us in Columbia again with
a Members’ recital. In November we
learned techniques to avoid injury
John Huber, Dean
while playing the organ as we heard
from guest clinician Kay Hooper on the Alexander Technique.
January Jumpstart found us at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church
with lots of opportunities to hear organ and choir music. In
February we met at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church for a MIDI
demonstration. The Hymn Festival in March at St. Peter's
Lutheran was a highlight for many in the community who had an
opportunity to hear the organ with a
large choir and instruments. May was
our annual meeting and a great
dinner before a presentation by David
Gross on Fanfares and Toccatas. In
June the Summer Arts Recital closed
out our year with pieces played by our
scholarship winners. We are truly
1

lessed to have such a wonderful group of musicians in our
chapter and are thankful for all who have contributed their talents
in many ways.
Our 2011- 2012 line up of programs gives us similar
opportunities to be involved as well. Our September meeting will
be a workshop on basic arranging and composing for choirs. The
October meeting will be on adapting piano pieces to organ. In
November we will have a workshop on pedagogy by Ken Cowan.
January Jumpstart is again scheduled in Bryn Mawr. In February
we will have a Members’ recital on Lent and Easter music. In
March we plan to go on an organ crawl. Our annual chapter
meeting in May will feature four hand music for organ and, or
piano, and we will finish the year off with the Summer Arts Recital
in June. Additionally we will have several exciting Organ
Showcase recitals to attend.
As always we look forward to seeing you at the meetings.
We appreciate your feedback and suggestions for future events
and programs you think will help the members grow.
INTERVIEW WITH TRISTAN TURKKI
2010 Beginning Organist Scholarship Winner
2011 Lunt-McConnell Scholarship Winner
Tristan has been intrigued by the
organ since he was very young. While
attending Lititz Moravian at age six, he
loved to listen to the organ and always
wanted to sit in the balcony so he could
watch the organist play. “I thought the
organ was the scariest instrument I ever
heard,” he says, “so I wanted to play it.”
Tristan began his musical studies
on the piano, which he continues to play.
He currently studies organ with Margaret
Marsch at the church he now attends, Lancaster Church of the
Brethren. Besides doing most of his practicing on the organ at
Lancaster COB, Tristan also plays in church about once a month.
The church has recently upgraded the organ and Tristan enjoys
playing on the new console and hearing the pipes mixed with the
new electronic sounds.
At the moment he is working on Bach's Little Prelude and
Fugue in F Major, which he really enjoys. Tristan is looking
forward to the time he will be able to play the Toccata and Fugue
in D Minor, a piece that has always interested him.
Besides his musical endeavors, Tristan enjoys hanging out
with friends, listening to music, and playing an unusual sport
called Squash.
When asked what he finds most challenging about playing
the organ, Tristan says, “I think that combining everything that an
organist has to do is complicated - reading three staffs of music,
playing on the manuals and the pedals, changing stops, adjusting
the organ shades to suit the music, and so on.” But he also says
proudly, “I think it is exciting that the organ is not played by many
people, and I am one of them!”
