About the CSHCN Program
Meet the CSHCN Class of2000
In 1993 the School of Nursing developed a
graduate focus known as the Center for
Children with Special Health Care Needs
(CSHCN) area of study. The CSHCN area of
study prepares advanced practice nurses to
assume leadership roles in the rapidly evolving
health care, human services and educational
systems to care for children with special health
care needs and their families.
Faculty are:
Barbara Leonard, PhD, RN, PNP
Linda Lindeke, PhD, RN, CPNP
Ann Garwick, PhD, RN
Jennifer York-Barr, PhD, PT
All graduates from our program are currently
serving children with complex health needs and
were recruited because of interest and background
related to the CSHCN area of study.
For more information regarding the CSHCN
area of study, contact:
This fall three new students
were admitted to the
PNP/CSHCN area of study.
Beth Else: Beth graduated
from Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter,
MN. She has worked in a pediatric allergy and
asthma clinic and currently is employed at
Children’s Hospital, St. Paul, working on the
epilepsy unit. Beth’s future goals are somewhat
undecided as yet but she would like to combine
primary care and asthma specialty practice in a
rural setting.
Devry Garity: Devry is a graduate of
Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah.
She is currently working at Children’s Hospital
in St. Paul with hematology/oncology and medical-surgical
patients. Her previous experience
was on an inpatient mental health unit for children.
Her future goal is to incorporate caring
for children with special health care needs in a
rural primary care practice.
Teresa Schultz: A graduate of St. Catherine’s
College, St. Paul, Minnesota, Teresa is currently
working at Children’s Hospital in St. Paul
with hematology/oncology patients. Teresa’s
future goal is to continue to meet the challenges
of hematology and oncology children
especially in the acute care setting.
Spotlight on CSHCN Faculty
From the Director
Ann Garwick, PhD, RN is an
Associate Professor in the School
of Nursing. Ann is a nurse and
psychologist by background who
received her doctorate in Family
Social Science from the University of Minnesota.
She completed a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship
in developmental disabilities with the Institute for
Disabilities Studies and the Center for Children
with Chronic Illness and Disability at the
University of Minnesota. She specializes in working
with children, youth, and families who are
managing stressors related to chronic and disabling
conditions. This year she is teaching
Nursing 8-114, Advanced Nursing Research
Design, Nursing 5919, Assessment and
Intervention Models in Families of Children with
Special Health Care Needs with Linda Lindeke,
and Public Health 5606, Health of Children.
Ann’s research focuses on the impact of chronic
illness and disability on children and their families.
She has a special interest in learning how families
from various cultural backgrounds view and manage
childhood chronic conditions. She is currently
working with Sally Auger on the Family Stories:
An American Indian Family Project. Their goal is
to understand the experience of caregiving from
the family’s point of view, so that health and education
professionals can improve the care they
provide to American Indian children and their families
who live in urban areas.
We are delighted to have received funding for
another five years from MCHB! The new grant
allows us extend our program to the doctoral level
and to expand continuing education offerings
through summer institutes. Several staff changes
occured as well. Ann Garwick joined Linda
Lindeke and me this fall. Ann is a gifted teacher
and a respected researcher. She has an
appointment in the Maternal and Child Health
Program in the School of Public Health. In addition
to Ann joining us, Adrienne Lawrence is our
new principal secretary. Karen Larsen will join us
half time as an administrative assistant. Sharon
Vegoe also is with us to develop outreach efforts.
We are grateful to have such a fine group of coworkers.
The coming year poses some difficult challenges.
One is the conversion of our program to
a semester format. Another pressing challenge is
the need to diversify our faculty, staff, students
and advisory committee. We value and celebrate
diversity it but we have a considerable gap
between our present state and the one we intend
to achieve. A third challenge is distance education
for our courses! Linda Lindeke is pioneering
one of her courses, Professional Issues, this fall
quarter. We intend to study the implications of this
technology and expand our distance education
offerings in a timely manner.
Thank-you for your continuing interest in our
program. We value your loyal service and support
more than you can imagine. Let us hear from you.
Mayo Clinic, for her primary care experiences.
A SPECIAL THANK YOU!
Without the continuing enthusiastic support of
our clinical preceptors and adjunct faculty this
but they generously squeeze in teaching, planning
and mentoring. Hats off to: Lisa Dornick,
