NVTC Social Media Committee Announces Winners of 2011 Social Media Awards On June 28, the NVTC Social Media Committee announced the winners of its second annual Social Media Awards, which recognize commercial and government organizations that have successfully implemented innovative and unique social media programs. Congratulations to the following winners: h Best Use of Facebook The Army National Guard h Best Use of Twitter Navy Federal Credit Union h Best Use of Viral Video Network Solutions h Best Integrated Social Media Campaign Deloitte The award winners were selected by three judges, all social media enthusiasts in the region: Amber Harris (@TheNuwanda) with Discovery Communications, Andrew Bates (@AndrewBates) with EyeTraffic/Penton Media; and Nicole Nolte (@NicolePRExec) of Welz & Weisel Communications. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Congressman Darrell Issa Addresses NVTC Board Congressman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) spoke at the first NVTC Board of Directors meeting of the fiscal year on September 13. During the meeting, Congressman Issa discussed his goals as chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which works to investigate and expose waste and fraud in the federal government and which has wide oversight jurisdiction over government functions, including the government procurement process, national security issues, homeland security grants, federal workforce policies, regulatory reform and reorganization authority, information technology procurement at individual agencies and government-wide data security standards. During his initial remarks, Congressman Issa asserted that the U.S. began to lose its competitive advantage in technology and employment after World War II and that we must examine our priorities in order to make the country more competitive internationally. He urged NVTC members to visit oversight.house. gov and click on the “AmericanJobCreators. com” button to voice their businesses’ opinions on job creation and to educate Congress about the challenges facing U.S. job creators. After his remarks, Congressman Issa engaged in an in-depth question and answer discussion with NVTC Board members. As an entrepreneur and former business owner, he argued that availability of capital and improved tax and regulatory certainty are the top things needed to promote entrepreneurship in the U.S. Other topics of discussion included the three percent withholding mandate on government contractors, the need to ensure the federal procurement process is not politicized, labor relations issues, simplification of the tax code and the ongoing work of the Government Reform Commission. In closing, Congressman Issa argued the need for improving the government’s ability to use real-time data to fight fraud and improve transparency. CACI’s Jack London Shares Business Insights with Members at Inaugural Lunch & Learn Event On June 9, NVTC hosted a Lunch & Learn event with NVTC Board Member Dr. Jack London, executive chairman and chairman of the board of CACI International Inc. At this inaugural event, a select group of 19 C-level executives from NVTC member companies had the unique opportunity to network with their colleagues and learn how London translated his years of military service into leading CACI’s growth from a small professional services consulting firm to a pacesetter in IT and communications solutions in the areas of defense, intelligence, homeland security, and IT modernization and government transformation. In this intimate roundtable discussion, Dr. London shared his tips for building the right company culture, recruiting and retaining top staff, identifying markets, managing company growth and dealing with crisis management. Congratulations to NVTC Board Member John Becker on Sale of Approva In a deal announced on September 7, NVTC Board member company Approva has been acquired by Lawson Software, an Infor affiliate. Headquartered in St. Paul, Minn., Lawson is a leading provider of enterprise resource planning software and solutions. Approva’s continuous controls monitoring applications will become a key element of the financial applications currently offered through Lawson and Infor.
