Books For Young People
by Mya Most
Charlie Bone Series by Jenny Nimmo
“Charlie’s eyes opened wide. He swore
the picture was talking to him”—that’s
the sentence that begins the seven
books in the Charlie Bone series.
Charlie Bone a 10-year old boy who
lives with his grandmother, Griselda Bone, a
nasty old woman who is intent on doing
evil—even killing her own son. Amy Bone is
Charie’s loving mother, who wants only to
keep her son safe. Great Uncle Paton, a mysterious
but kind-hearted man, will do anything
to stop his sister Griselda from working
her wickedness.
His family enrolls Charlie at Bloors Academy,
a school for gifted children. Charlie is placed
in the music department, as was his father, but
Charlie knows he has no talent for music.
The school is full of strange and unique people.
Manfred, the snotty, stuck-up son of the headmaster,
has the power of hypnosis. Tancred is
the Storm Boy, Lysander can summon his
African ancestors, Billy Raven, an albino orphan
boy, communicates with animals, the
R
scraggly redhead, who is also Manfred’s
best friend, can turn into
something like a werewolf.
As Charlie forms friendships with
his classmates—some with and
some without special powers—he
discovers that everything is not
quite right at Bloors Academy and,
with the help of his friends, he uncovers
the school’s many secrets.
Byrd in his exploration of the South Pole, accompanying
the miners who came to Alaska during the Gold Rush of
1896 and serving with the US Army in World War II,
primarily as search and rescue dogs in Greenland. In the
photo (at left) Apollo shows off the famous Malamute
smile.
