Summer
Reading
2013!
Summer Reading is all about finding the fun in books all summer
long! The New York Public Library helps kids of all ages discover
how satisfying a good book can be and helps them keep their
reading skills sharp over summer vacation. At the end of the
summer, the top children and teen readers from each borough go
to a Yankees home game and take a bow on the field (see page 15).
Sign up for Summer Reading at your local library or online at
www.summerreading.org. The website offers an audio tour of
Summer Reading, which explains how to keep track of and rate your
reading, create an avatar, and win badges. There are also book lists
and a schedule of library events. At the end of the summer, you’ll
get a certificate of achievement to prove you’re a top-notch reader.
Summer Reading 2013
June–august 2013 kids.nypl.org
What is Summer Reading?
Summer Reading is about having fun and
staying bright during summer vacation.
Studies show that kids who read regularly
during school breaks keep up or even move
ahead academically, while ones who don’t
often slide backward.
How does it work?
Signing up for Summer Reading is easy, and
it’s for everyone—no one is too young or too
old to join in! Register at your local library
and pick up a copy of this year’s Summer
Reading Book List and Book Log for children.
Or visit www.summerreading.org to sign
up online. Then start reading and logging
your books—and earn digital achievement
badges to mark your progress!
What can I read?
The Library provides book lists for different
age groups, but that’s just to get you started.
You can read any book that tickles your
fancy.
What if I don’t have a library card?
No library card, no problem. It’s never too
late—or too early—to start to love reading.
Just head to your local branch and fill out
an application. If you’re under 11, bring a
parent or guardian with you. Teens 12 and
up and adults can also register for a card at
www.nypl.org.
For more information about special programs
and events offered throughout the
summer, stop by your local library or call
Tips to Enjoy
Summer Reading
• Set aside a special time for
reading. Nightly bedtime stories
work well for many families, but
any time is good. And it’s never
too early to start. Even babies
enjoy stories.
• Find favorites. Many children
love to hear stories over and
over again. It comforts them and
helps develop language skills.
• Ask questions. Studies show that
children who discuss the books
they read improve their language
and reading skills faster than
those who don’t.
Meet Last Year’s Top Summer Readers
Last year, the top seven readers who
participated in Summer Reading—the
Library’s largest annual program for
children and teens—logged a total of more
than 3,000 books and were honored at a
Yankees game at the end of the summer.
The enthusiastic bookworms from the
Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island chose
titles as diverse as Leo Lionni’s picture
book An Extraordinary Egg and the manga
series Rosario + Vampire.
“Books are amazing,” said 17-year-old
Staten Islander Ron Frazier, who admitted
that he didn’t always like to read. Bronx
children’s champion Michael Pineda took
his bow on the field for the second year in
a row; the seven-year-old said he reads
“everywhere” all the time, which helped
him nearly double his total from last year.
Even at the end of August, the boys were
still reading, and Frazier was getting ready
to delve into the work of a new author:
Shakespeare. “I heard about him, but I
never got a chance to read him,” Frazier
said. “Now I’m going to give it a try and see
what everybody’s been talking about.”
