Historical Note: 

The Van Voorhees Association was founded in 1932 by Rev. Dr. Oscar M. Voorhees. It is a nonprofit 

organization dedicated to researching and preserving the history of the Van Voorhees 

family, which according to its website is one of the largest and oldest Dutch families in the 

United States. Membership is limited to members of the Van Voorhees families, and members 

must provide their known ancestry when applying for membership. The organization is governed 

by a board that includes a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, correspondence 

secretary, financial secretary, line representatives, genealogy committee, and membership chair. 

Since it is a mainly a genealogical organization, its genealogy committee is very active and the 

organization retains a genealogist, who maintains a genealogical database and actively researches 

the family. The genealogist also assists members with their own family research. When the 

organization was founded, Oscar Voorhees was committed to creating and publishing a 

genealogy that continued and updated the family’s first genealogy published by Elias Van 

Voorhis in 1888. The Van Voorhees Association has pursued this goal throughout its history. 

The organization has compiled and published several genealogies, including Albert L. Stokes’ 

The Van Voorhees Family Volume 1: The First Four Generations and Florence Christoph’s The 

Van Voorhees Family in America: The First Six Generations. In addition to its genealogical 

activities, the association organizes family reunions on a semiregular basis and produces a 

newsletter, Niewsbrief. As of early 2011, the Van Voorhees Association is still an active 

organization. More information about the activities and genealogies of the association can be

Scope and Content Note: 

The records of the Van Voorhees Association consists of genealogy, family records, 

correspondence, journals, photographs, obituaries, wills, deeds, newspaper articles, and other 

material documenting the Van Voorhees family. Since the main activities are genealogical, the 

vast majority of the material relates to the Van Voorhees family history and genealogy. There is 

some material that documents the administration of the organization including membership 

records, correspondence, and newsletters.

The collection is mostly arranged by membership applications; membership correspondence; 

Dates and Individual Information for New Van Voorhees Genealogy sheets; 

photocopies/transcriptions of Bible records; Family Group sheets; photocopies/transcriptions of 

wills, deed and other documents; the papers of Patricia Zumwalt; newspaper clippings, book 

excerpts, booklets, genealogical charts, obituaries, letters, and short biographies; Albert L. 

Stokes’ genealogy drafts; Harold Hazelton’s genealogy draft and notes; the research of Donald 

Sinclair; photographs; newsletters; individual family genealogies; New York Supreme Court 

documents; and the Elias Van Voorhees journals. 

Many individuals created and kept these records throughout the life of the organization which 

resulted in the records becoming jumbled without a recordkeeping scheme. In the late 1990s, 

Judith Van Voorhis and Florence Christoph had primary responsibility for keeping these records 

and organized the material. Despite this organization, there are some inconsistencies in the 

organization. 

Boxes 14 contain membership applications. Initially, these forms were filed by the applicants’ 

last name but as the organization grew in size, each member was assigned a unique number and 

the applications were organized numerically by membership number. The applications include 

information regarding the member’s lineage; occasionally the applicant included additional 

documentation about his ancestry. It was required for the member to provide this information 

since membership is only open to Van Voorhees descendants. 

Membership correspondence, which is housed in Box 5, dates from 1993 to 2005 and is arranged 

chronologically. The content concerns membership matters such as confirmation of membership, 

renewals or notification of a member’s death. 

Box 5 also contains the Dates and Individual Information for New Voorhees Genealogy sheets. 

These informational sheets were designed by the Rev. Dr. Oscar Van Voorhees to collect 

biographical information on members. The sheets asked for information such as birth date, 

address, education, occupation, and information on immediate family. The purpose of these 

sheets was to collect information on family members that would be used to compile a family 

genealogy. 

Photocopies and transcriptions of Bible records dating to back to the seventieth century are found 

in Box 6. All of these records come from Bibles belonging to various members of the Van 

Voorhees family. 

Rev. Van Voorhees also designed Family Group sheets in addition to the individual information 

sheets that were sent to members in order to gather genealogical information. These sheets asked 

the member to provide information about their known ancestry and progeny. These sheets can be 

found in Boxes 6 and 7. There is one Family Group sheet per folder and the folders are identified 

by the member’s name and city of residence. 

In addition to records from family Bibles, the Van Voorhees Family Association also collected 

photocopies and transcriptions of wills, deeds and other legal documents related to family 

members from the seventeenth century to the present. Some of these records are found in Box 7. 



This box also contains the papers of Patricia Zumwalt, who was a longtime member of the 

organization and served as the western states representative on the board of the association. Her 

papers include correspondence with members of the board, new members from the west coast 

region; papers related to organizing reunions and other events for west coast members as well as 

her own genealogical research. 

Boxes 7, 8, 11, 12, and 1723 contain assorted newspaper clippings, articles, book excerpts, 

obituaries, wedding announcements, letters, printed emails, short biographies and other material 

related to Van Voorhees family members. This material was collected throughout the 

organization’s history in order to collect material that documents the lives of Van Voorhees 

family members. Member correspondence, membership applications and photocopies and 

transcriptions of Bible records can be found within these records. Much of the material is 

original but there are photocopies and transcriptions of original material. 

The collection also contains the drafts and notes of genealogies created by several of the 

organization’s genealogists. Boxes 8 and 9 contain the drafts of the work compiled by Albert L. 

Stokes: The Van Voorhees Family Volume 1: The First Four Generations. His drafts are 

arranged by family line and generations. Boxes 9, 10 and 11 contains the drafts and notes 

compiled by Harold Hazelton, for which a publication was never finished. His research is also 

arranged by family line and generation. Box 11 contains the research of Donald Sinclair. He did 

extensive research on the family and filled notebooks with records of church records, family 

Bibles, wills, deeds and other records from the New Jersey and Pennsylvania archives dating to 

the seventieth and eighteenth centuries. These files are arranged alphabetically by first name. 

Sinclair did not produce a formal genealogy but his research filled in the gaps from previous 

family research. 

Boxes 1216, 23 and 24 contain member correspondence. The majority of this correspondence 

relates to the individual member’s family research. The member is either asking the organization 

for information on a specific family member or the member is sharing his research findings of a 

particular member. The correspondence was often accompanied with photocopies of wills, deeds, 

Bible records, photographs, pedigree charts, or other material. This correspondence is arranged 

alphabetically by the surname of the correspondent except for Box 24. 

Photographs collected by the association can be found in Boxes 16 and 17. In 2002 the 

organization created an index and a naming scheme for their photograph collection. The folders 

are labeled with the organization’s naming scheme as well as the name of the person or people 

appearing in the photographs. The index to the collection can be found in Box 16, Folder 163. 

The organization’s newsletter, Niewsbrief (Box 24), dating from May 1985 to Fall 2007, focuses 

on upcoming and past events and on genealogical research findings. The newsletters are arranged 

chronologically. 

Boxes 2426 contain Van Voorhees Family genealogies compiled by individuals independently 

of the organization. Most of these genealogies were not published. 



Box 26 contains documents (mostly summonses and complaints) from five court cases in which 

a Van Voorhees family member was one of several people named as a defendant. The documents 

date between 1912 and 1921. 

The journals of Elias Van Voorhis (Boxes 26 and 27) consist of abstracts from wills, deed and 

church records, mostly from New Jersey. Each journal is devoted to a specific topic and/or 

geographic location. The notes in his journal are not arranged in any specific order unless 

indicated. Also in Box 27 is a copy of the Albert L. Stokes’ genealogy, published in 1984, which 

contains information about the first four generations of the Van Voorhees family. 

A pedigree chart of the descendants of Benjamin Moore, a drawing depicting the death of 

Captain Voorhees in 1779, and a photograph of a meeting of the Van Voorhees Association at 

the Empire State Club on May 21, 1932, are housed in an oversize folder.
