Tamaki Ki Raro Trust (the Trust) is a community-based organisation which delivers health,
social, and education services to the wider Mangere community. A trust board governs the
training arm of the Trust, Tamaki Ki Raro Training (Tamaki). The Trust provides services
which also support the training arm and include a programme, Mangere Makes a Difference
(MMAD), which involves a team of eight youth workers and an events coordinator
facilitating wider community events which strengthen community partnerships between the
police, schools, families, and service agencies. This team also supports the tutors by
providing recreational support for learners and specific educational services such as drug
and alcohol workshops. The Trust also employs eight social workers who counsel in five
secondary schools in the area and are available to the training arm. The Trust’s clinical
psychologist is also available to the learners.
Tamaki’s location affords the students access to medical services and Kohanga Reo care
facilities, and contact with local Kaumatua and Kuia through the Te Puea Marae
Kaumatua/Kuia units. Tamaki’s students are actively involved in the upkeep and
maintenance of the Te Puea Kaumatua/Kuia District Health Board Community garden.
Tamaki’s additional pastoral care support includes a full-time cook and cleaner, specifically
employed to provide healthy lunches for the students, regular cleaning of Tamaki’s
common areas, and general support to training staff which includes taking students for
appointments, assisting on field trips, and other assistance as required.
Tamaki delivers Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) funded, 48-week foundation
learning courses to adult and youth learners. Successful completion of the courses can lead
to:
• National Certificate in Work and Community Skills (Level 1)
