Purpose<br />
This qualification is for technicians work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustrial measurement <strong>and</strong> control<br />
environment. Though this is a st<strong>and</strong>-alone qualification, it is frequently taken <strong>in</strong><br />
conjunction with an electrical apprenticeship.<br />
The qualification builds on the fundamental electrical theory <strong>and</strong> safety practices conta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
<strong>in</strong> the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> Electrical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g (Level 2) [Ref: 0174] <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>corporates<br />
skills <strong>and</strong> knowledge <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g areas:<br />
• safe work practices<br />
• electronics<br />
• <strong>in</strong>dustrial measurement <strong>and</strong> control theory<br />
• application of theory <strong>in</strong> practical work situations<br />
• writ<strong>in</strong>g short reports<br />
• a range of electives to suit <strong>in</strong>dividual work experience.<br />
C<strong>and</strong>idates pursu<strong>in</strong>g this qualification apart from an electrical apprenticeship should note<br />
that it may be a legal requirement for them to obta<strong>in</strong> registration as an electrician or<br />
electrical service technician with the Electrical Workers Registration Board, depend<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
the nature of their work.<br />
The qualification has some credits <strong>in</strong> common with the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong>s <strong>in</strong> Electrical<br />
Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g (Level 3) [Ref: 0223] <strong>and</strong> the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> Electrical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
(Electrician for Registration) (Level 4) [Ref: 1195].<br />
Holders of this qualification may progress to the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Industrial</strong><br />
<strong>Measurement</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Control</strong> (Level 5) [Ref: 0976], or to the <strong>National</strong> Diploma <strong>in</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
(Electrotechnology) (Level 6) [Ref: 1313].<br />

Version 1 of the qualification replaced the Trade <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Industrial</strong> Instrumentation.<br />
The last <strong>Industrial</strong> Instrumentation trade exam<strong>in</strong>ations were held <strong>in</strong> November 1998, <strong>and</strong><br />
f<strong>in</strong>al date for the award of Trade <strong>Certificate</strong> was 31 December 2002. The Trade<br />
<strong>Certificate</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>Industrial</strong> Instrumentation will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to be recognised by <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>and</strong><br />
there is no need to convert those qualifications to a <strong>National</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Industrial</strong><br />
<strong>Measurement</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Control</strong> (Level 4).<br />
