However through the growth of lap dancing clubs a normalisation of attitudes towards
the industry has developed and subsists regardless of this legal shift. The damaging
perception this generates only undermines the severity of its impact both on an
external level of society and on an internal level of distorting the reality of
experiences within the industry.
This report aims to challenge the widespread perception attached to lap dancing clubs
that claim they are merely ‘harmless fun’ through presenting a collation of statistical
and personal testimonies which directly tackle the myths that serve to justify the
exploitation of women within this industry.
By questioning the very myths that comprise the central points of reasoning for the
apparent harmless nature of lap dancing clubs, the underlying realities will be
exposed to highlight both the exploitative practices of the industry and the impact of
such venues on a larger social scale. Importantly, this report expands the debate
away from the contentious and simplistic justification of ‘choice’ repeatedly used by
the industry but rather considers lap dancing clubs in a broader context of the social
implications that this work has on attitudes towards women and gender inequality as
a whole.
