Sheikh Hasina is one of the two surviving siblings of Sheikh Mujibur<br />
Rahman. She was abroad along with her sister Rihana on August 15<br />
1975, the day when her father <strong>and</strong> most of her family members were<br />
killed by a group of army officers. She went into exile in India, <strong>and</strong><br />
while there was elected president of Awami League in 1981. She has<br />
formidable control over the party, as could be clearly seen from the<br />
inability of the military backed caretaker regime (2007-08) to remove<br />
her from the position of party leader despite its initiatives to carve out<br />

an alternative leadership for the party.<br />
Sheikh Hasina has often been accused of being autocratic in dealing<br />
with her party's affairs. <strong>Bangladesh</strong>i political analysts are of the view<br />
that Sheikh Haisna aims to consolidate her position in the party by<br />
being ruthless in crushing any dissent. Many of the top influential<br />
leaders who spoke about party reforms were ostracized within the<br />
