academic Dress<br />
The origins of academic dress date back to the Twelfth and Thirteenth centuries when<br />
universities in England were taking form. The scholars were also clerics and thus<br />
adopted robes similar to those of their monastic orders. Caps were a necessity in the<br />
drafty buildings and capes with hoods were needed for warmth.<br />
In the United States, the use of academic dress has been continuous since colonial<br />
times. A uniform system was not widespread, however, until about 1895, when the welldefined<br />
dress code was adopted by nearly all institutions of higher education.<br />
Gowns worn by those in the procession vary in design and decoration according to<br />
the degree held. Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have<br />
authorized the use of colored gowns.<br />
Hoods, which are the most distinctive feature of the American code, vary in length<br />
according to the type of degree held and are lined with the official colors of the<br />
institution conferring the degree. The velvet border or edging indicates the degree or<br />
subject by use of the appropriate color.<br />
The standard cap is the mortarboard and is usually the same for all degrees. The<br />
standard tassel is black, but the doctor’s cap may have a gold tassel. Undergraduates<br />
wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the moment the degree is conferred.<br />

The academic gown has short or regular sleeves.<br />

Doctorate Degree<br />
The academic gown has round full sleeves. The doctor’s gown is faced down the front<br />
with black velvet trimming and has three bars of the same material across the sleeves or,<br />
in some cases, the color of this velvet relates to the field in which the degree is granted.<br />
