Improv<strong>in</strong>g accessibility<br />
Includ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>disabled</strong> <strong>people</strong> as contributors, viewers and listeners means ensur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that <strong>disabled</strong> <strong>people</strong> can take part; this may or may not mean mak<strong>in</strong>g adjustments.<br />
Here are some ideas <strong>for</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g your output more accessible:<br />
• Improve and/or <strong>in</strong>crease subtitl<strong>in</strong>g and sign<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> deaf <strong>people</strong>;<br />
• Expand knowledge about various adjustments eg <strong>in</strong>duction loops, m<strong>in</strong>icom/text<br />
phone, alternative computer keyboards, etc and how these can help you employ<br />
and support more <strong>disabled</strong> <strong>people</strong>;<br />
• Ensure that access to programme support (eg factsheets, websites etc) does not<br />
exclude <strong>disabled</strong> <strong>people</strong> by offer<strong>in</strong>g a range of <strong>for</strong>mats (eg electronic versions,<br />
Braille, audiotape etc);<br />
• Where telephone numbers and addresses or details of goods and services are<br />
shown on-screen, they should be spoken as well;<br />
• Ensure your website is accessible, by check<strong>in</strong>g with www.w3c.org/WAI<br />

Case study: Audio description<br />
The Film Council is work<strong>in</strong>g with the film <strong>in</strong>dustry on a project to improve<br />
facilities <strong>for</strong> <strong>disabled</strong> c<strong>in</strong>ema goers. The project <strong>in</strong>volves selected c<strong>in</strong>emas<br />
across the UK <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g caption<strong>in</strong>g and audio-description equipment.<br />

BSkyB’s digital satellite customers can choose to hear audio described<br />
