Pre-registration is important in helping us<br />

properly plan for the large number of campus<br />

visitors. All pre-registered alumni receive<br />

helpful weekend information and updates on<br />

events. The nominal fees charged for some<br />

events cover food, beverage and entertainment,<br />

plus many activities are complimentary.<br />

Alumni are invited to enjoy a lively conversation with a triumvirate<br />

of retiring business faculty members, Dr. Wilt Straley, Professor<br />

Chris Benton and Dr. Bruce Hetherington, as they present<br />

their “Last Lecture”. A reception will follow.<br />

Gray Stone and Mortar Ring Ceremony<br />

7:30 p.m. Lupton Auditorium<br />

Join members of the junior and senior classes and alumni for<br />

OU’s Ring Ceremony featuring our official class ring. Alumni<br />

who purchased rings this year are encouraged to participate in<br />

the Ceremony hosted by the Alumni Board with rings presented<br />

by President Schall. Spectators and guests are welcome.<br />

Pre-registered alumni may pick up registration packets, class<br />

schedules and ask questions.<br />

A select number of OU classes will be open for a visit. Pick up a<br />

list at Early Registration. The best news, no tests! The class list<br />

Annual Alumni Awards Banquet<br />

6:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.<br />

Join fellow Petrels as we honor our 2013 Alumni Award winners<br />

at the Carlos Hellenic Ballroom, 2500 Clairmont Rd. Atlanta,<br />

Ga. 30329. $65/adult (includes cocktail reception and 3 course<br />

dinner with wine/beer). Dress is business attire. Reservations are<br />

required by April 15. Limited seating. The event will kickoff with<br />

a musical number performed by the OU Chorale. This celebration<br />

of alumni achievements has become one of Alumni Weekend’s<br />

most popular events.<br />

The School Bell Award:<br />

This award is given to an Alumni or past or present faculty member<br />

who has made a lasting contribution to the field of education.<br />

O.K. Sheffield ’53 Young Alumni of the Year Award:<br />

This award recognizes a graduate of the last ten years who<br />

has shown leadership and inspired other young alumni through<br />

participation in career, public service, volunteer or continuing<br />

education activities.<br />

• Nobles Green ’03<br />

Spirit of <strong>Oglethorpe</strong> Award:<br />

This award is presented to a graduate who lives by the <strong>Oglethorpe</strong><br />

motto, Make a life. Make a living. Make a difference, demonstrating<br />

the attributes of a liberal arts education by exhibiting creativity,<br />

purposefulness and a commitment to improving the quality of<br />

their community.<br />

Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees:<br />

Only 175 athletes and three individual teams have been honored by<br />

the <strong>University</strong> since the Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1962.<br />

The following alumni have been nominated for inclusion in 2013:<br />

• 1979-80 Men’s Basketball Team<br />

• Heather Francouer Karvis ’03 – basketball<br />

2011-12 Annual Fund Class Participation Awards:<br />

• The Class of 1964 will be recognized for achieving a 31%<br />

participation in the annual fund.<br />

• The Class of 2010 will be recognized for achieving the highest<br />

young alumni class participation with 16% participation.<br />

We continue our tradition of distributing our commemorative<br />

collectible pins for all annual fund donors in appreciation for<br />

their annual support. This year’s pin, fashioned after the<br />

compass in the <strong>Oglethorpe</strong> Odyssey logo above, will be<br />

distributed at registration throughout the weekend. This pin<br />

tradition is intended to be a fun way for Oglethorpians to<br />

share their pride in giving back and remain connected to OU.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> has grown and prospered over the last 178 years.<br />

Join your classmates, the officers of the Alumni Board, current<br />

student leaders and President Larry Schall for an exciting update<br />

on the plans for the <strong>University</strong> over the next several years. A<br />

light breakfast will be served. The new slate of Alumni Board<br />

members will also be up for a vote.<br />

Adult Education Reunion & Picnic<br />

12:00 p.m. Meet in the Great Hall of Hearst<br />

<strong>Oglethorpe</strong> has proudly educated adult learners returning to the<br />

classroom on their journey to earn a degree since the 1940’s.<br />

Join alumni of all ages who attended <strong>Oglethorpe</strong> in the evening<br />

and on weekends along with some favorite faculty members. We<br />

will have special tables designated at the Petrel Flies Picnic so<br />

you can visit and reconnect. $15 per person for the Petrel Flies<br />

Academic Quadrangle<br />

If you’re only coming out for one<br />

event, this is the one not to miss!<br />

Every Petrel worth his or her feathers<br />

will flock to this event with their<br />

family! Join the faculty and staff for a southern picnic with all<br />

the fixin’s, cold beer, lawn games, bounce house, music and a<br />

photo booth featuring Petey the Petrel. $15 per person. Children<br />

Carillon Ceremony for Reunion Classes<br />

1:00 – 1:30 p.m. Academic Quadrangle<br />

Facilitated by the Alumni Association, the Carillon Ceremony<br />

honors members of reunion classes with an opportunity to enter<br />

a secret door in Lupton Hall and climb a narrow, spiral staircase<br />

to the top of the bell tower. Alumni sign a registry book and<br />

have their photos taken ringing the carillon bells. No skirts!<br />

Please wear non-slip, low heeled shoes. The Carillon Ceremony<br />

has become one of the most treasured student traditions during<br />

Commencement Week at OU.<br />

Museum Tour<br />

<strong>Oglethorpe</strong> <strong>University</strong> Museum of Art<br />

3:15 p.m. Third floor of Lowry Hall<br />

New Museum Director Elizabeth Peterson and<br />

her staff welcome alumni to the OUMA to view<br />

the current exhibit, “Beta Israel: Ethiopian<br />

Jews and the Promised Land.” This exhibition<br />

explores the mass migration of Ethiopian Jews into modern Israeli<br />

society and the integration difficulties they faced. The exhibition<br />

features 100 photographs by South African photojournalist Ilan<br />

Ossendryver, who lived in Israel for 20 years.<br />

Greek-a-palooza Block Party<br />

3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Greek Row<br />

Greeks of all ages and affiliations are<br />

invited back to Greek Row. Each Greek<br />

organization will sponsor a different<br />

dessert or beverage for all guests. Live<br />

Weekend’s signature libation. Ever wonder what ocean-going<br />

birds drink? Don’t miss our special Alumni Weekend cocktail in a<br />

souvenir cup. Late night party-going Petrels will also be treated to<br />

Krystal hamburgers at the end of the party. $5 per person which<br />

Join your teammates for some hoops on Pinholster Court or<br />

enjoy the action from the bleachers. $10 per player includes a<br />

game T-shirt and refreshments during and after the game;<br />

spectators free. The women’s team will take the floor first,<br />

followed by the men’s team.<br />

throughout the weekend; please note that small children may<br />

not be the correct audience for events on Friday and Saturday<br />

evening. If you need babysitting services, please call the Alumni<br />

Relations Office at least one week in advance for a referral.<br />
