role that Oglethorpe has played in your own
personal journey. The entire community welcomes
you to enter our gates to enjoy a glimpse of the
Oglethorpe Odyssey.
Pre-registration is important in helping us
properly plan for the large number of campus
visitors. All pre-registered alumni receive
helpful weekend information and updates on
events. The nominal fees charged for some
events cover food, beverage and entertainment,
plus many activities are complimentary.

Omicron Delta Kappa’s (ODK)
Last Lecture Series
4:30 p.m. Lupton Auditorium
Alumni are invited to enjoy a lively conversation with a triumvirate
of retiring business faculty members, Dr. Wilt Straley, Professor
Chris Benton and Dr. Bruce Hetherington, as they present
their “Last Lecture”. A reception will follow.
Gray Stone and Mortar Ring Ceremony
7:30 p.m. Lupton Auditorium
Join members of the junior and senior classes and alumni for
OU’s Ring Ceremony featuring our official class ring. Alumni
who purchased rings this year are encouraged to participate in
the Ceremony hosted by the Alumni Board with rings presented
by President Schall. Spectators and guests are welcome.

Pre-registered alumni may pick up registration packets, class
schedules and ask questions.
The OU Bookstore is open for browsing from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

A select number of OU classes will be open for a visit. Pick up a
list at Early Registration. The best news, no tests! The class list

Annual Alumni Awards Banquet
6:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Join fellow Petrels as we honor our 2013 Alumni Award winners
at the Carlos Hellenic Ballroom, 2500 Clairmont Rd. Atlanta,
Ga. 30329. $65/adult (includes cocktail reception and 3 course
dinner with wine/beer). Dress is business attire. Reservations are
required by April 15. Limited seating. The event will kickoff with
a musical number performed by the OU Chorale. This celebration
of alumni achievements has become one of Alumni Weekend’s
most popular events.

our extraordinary alumni each year with the following awards.
The School Bell Award:
This award is given to an Alumni or past or present faculty member
who has made a lasting contribution to the field of education.

O.K. Sheffield ’53 Young Alumni of the Year Award:
This award recognizes a graduate of the last ten years who
has shown leadership and inspired other young alumni through
participation in career, public service, volunteer or continuing
education activities.
• Nobles Green ’03
Spirit of Oglethorpe Award:
This award is presented to a graduate who lives by the Oglethorpe
motto, Make a life. Make a living. Make a difference, demonstrating
the attributes of a liberal arts education by exhibiting creativity,
purposefulness and a commitment to improving the quality of
their community.

Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees:
Only 175 athletes and three individual teams have been honored by
the University since the Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1962.
The following alumni have been nominated for inclusion in 2013:

• Heather Francouer Karvis ’03 – basketball

2011-12 Annual Fund Class Participation Awards:
• The Class of 1964 will be recognized for achieving a 31%
participation in the annual fund.
• The Class of 2010 will be recognized for achieving the highest
young alumni class participation with 16% participation.
We continue our tradition of distributing our commemorative
collectible pins for all annual fund donors in appreciation for
their annual support. This year’s pin, fashioned after the
compass in the Oglethorpe Odyssey logo above, will be
distributed at registration throughout the weekend. This pin
tradition is intended to be a fun way for Oglethorpians to
share their pride in giving back and remain connected to OU.

campus to relive their glory days on the field.

State of the University and Annual Meeting
of the Alumni Association

The University has grown and prospered over the last 178 years.
Join your classmates, the officers of the Alumni Board, current
student leaders and President Larry Schall for an exciting update
on the plans for the University over the next several years. A
light breakfast will be served. The new slate of Alumni Board
members will also be up for a vote.

Adult Education Reunion & Picnic
12:00 p.m. Meet in the Great Hall of Hearst
Oglethorpe has proudly educated adult learners returning to the
classroom on their journey to earn a degree since the 1940’s.
Join alumni of all ages who attended Oglethorpe in the evening
and on weekends along with some favorite faculty members. We
will have special tables designated at the Petrel Flies Picnic so
you can visit and reconnect. $15 per person for the Petrel Flies
Picnic.

Academic Quadrangle
If you’re only coming out for one
event, this is the one not to miss!
Every Petrel worth his or her feathers
will flock to this event with their
family! Join the faculty and staff for a southern picnic with all
the fixin’s, cold beer, lawn games, bounce house, music and a
photo booth featuring Petey the Petrel. $15 per person. Children

Carillon Ceremony for Reunion Classes
1:00 – 1:30 p.m. Academic Quadrangle
Facilitated by the Alumni Association, the Carillon Ceremony
honors members of reunion classes with an opportunity to enter
a secret door in Lupton Hall and climb a narrow, spiral staircase
to the top of the bell tower. Alumni sign a registry book and
have their photos taken ringing the carillon bells. No skirts!
Please wear non-slip, low heeled shoes. The Carillon Ceremony
has become one of the most treasured student traditions during
Commencement Week at OU.

and share Dr. Thornwell Jacobs vision for creating this treasuretrove
of items on our campus.

Alumni of all ages are invited back to campus to enjoy an
afternoon of tennis with Coach Peter Howell. $25 per player —

Museum Tour
Oglethorpe University Museum of Art
3:15 p.m. Third floor of Lowry Hall
New Museum Director Elizabeth Peterson and
her staff welcome alumni to the OUMA to view
the current exhibit, “Beta Israel: Ethiopian
Jews and the Promised Land.” This exhibition
explores the mass migration of Ethiopian Jews into modern Israeli
society and the integration difficulties they faced. The exhibition
features 100 photographs by South African photojournalist Ilan
Ossendryver, who lived in Israel for 20 years.
Greek-a-palooza Block Party
3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Greek Row
Greeks of all ages and affiliations are
invited back to Greek Row. Each Greek
organization will sponsor a different
dessert or beverage for all guests. Live
music by The Critty Upchurch Band.
Prizes will be awarded to the Greek
organization that has the most alumni
check in for the weekend.

playing rock and pop favorites. This event was a show-stopper
last year! Available for purchase are beer, wine and Alumni
Weekend’s signature libation. Ever wonder what ocean-going
birds drink? Don’t miss our special Alumni Weekend cocktail in a
souvenir cup. Late night party-going Petrels will also be treated to
Krystal hamburgers at the end of the party. $5 per person which

Alumni Basketball Game
(Black and Gold Game)
1:00 pm – 3:30 p.m. Dorough Fieldhouse
Join your teammates for some hoops on Pinholster Court or
enjoy the action from the bleachers. $10 per player includes a
game T-shirt and refreshments during and after the game;
spectators free. The women’s team will take the floor first,
followed by the men’s team.

Relations Office at least one week in advance for a referral.
