Ohlone 2010 Baseball PlayoffSophomores Review Ohlone 2010 Baseball PlayoffSophomores Review Game 1: Ohlone 13, El Camino 0 Roberto Padilla pitched 6 no-hit innings with the bullpen, finishing the complete game with a one-hit shutout. Steven Ramos, Cody Foster and Zach Johnson led the way going 8 for 9 through 3 innings, scoring 8 runs and producing 6 RBI’s. For the game, the trio combined for 11 hits, 8 RBI and 8 runs scored. Ramos led off the game with a double down the left field line. Jeff Johnson then batted him in on a double after a sacrifice bunt that moved him up to third. The Ohlone offense scored 4 runs in the second inning, including a 2 run single by Ramos and an RBI single by Jeff Johnson. Tanner Laran, the ninth batter of the inning, was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which pushed the lead to 5-0 Ohlone. The third inning was more of the same from the Renegades, scoring 4 runs, with Jeff Johnson contributing to his RBI total with a 2-run homerun. The offense gave Padilla plenty of room to work with as he struck out 7 over 6 innings of no-hit baseball. Alika Pruett, Brandon Arata and George Asmus threw one inning each to complete the one-hit shut out performance. Game 2: Ohlone 11, Rio Hondo 2 State Championship Game 3: Ohlone 16, San Mateo 10 San Mateo struck first, scoring six on top of the third inning giving the Bulldogs a 6-0 advantage going in the bottom frame. Jeff The Renegades scored first, with 3 base hits, including an RBI single by Michael Ussery driving in Jeff Johnson, followed by a bases loaded walk to Ryan Walterhouse. Cody Foster produced the third run of the inning off a fielder’s choice giving Ohlone a 3-0 lead after 2 innings. Rio Hondo scored one run in the third and Ohlone answered in the bottom half with back-to-back solo homeruns by Zach and Jeff Johnson, extending the lead to 5-0. Steven Ramos scored Kyle Holmstrom with a single in the sixth inning with two outs extending the lead to 6-1. The Ohlone offensive pressure continued with two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth, making it 11-2 going into the ninth. Ramos, Jeff Johnson and Michael Ussery managed three hits each and contributed 5 RBI’s. Ohlone pitcher Justin Kuks (5-2) matched the performance of teammate Roberto Padilla and three relief pitchers from the opening game, as he went seven innings and surrendered just 1 run on 5 hits, struck out 7 and allowed 6 walks. George Asmus came on in relief. Johnson, the tournament’s most valuable player, led the way with a three-run homerun. This was followed by a Cody Foster single. Michael DiRocco brought the score to 6-4 heading into the fourth inning. Ryan Walterhouse drove in Kyle Holmstrom in the fourth, cutting the lead to 6-5. San Mateo extended the lead to 7-5 on the top of the sixth, and the Renegades answered back with a Michael Ussery double, DiRocco sacrificed fly and Cody Foster brought in the game-tying run with a one-out RBI single. Ramos doubled and advanced to third, Zach Johnson walked to load the bases for his brother Jeff Johnson. The fourth homerun of the tournament for Jeff Johnson was a base clearing grand slam that gave the Renegades the 11-7 advantage going into the seventh. The offense continued with Ramos leading the way defensively, taking away two potential base hits with diving catches and carrying the momentum into the bottom half of the inning. Ramos singled and used his speed to score off a pick-off throw to first base, sparking the offense to score three additional runs to make the lead 15-7. Jeff Johnson totaled 7 RBI’s. Cody Foster, Tanner Laran and Ryan Walterhouse contributed 2 RBI’s each, and DiRocco added 1 RBI. Matt Fontaine found himself in a 6-0 hole early, but settled in and threw 5 innings with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. Alika Pruett came in relief, allowing one run over two and a third innings and received his first win of the season. Roberto Padilla closed the game, throwing one and two thirds, striking out two, completing the first-ever state championship for the Renegades. The Ohlone vs. San Mateo matchup was only the second time in state championship history where two teams faced off from the north in the final game. It was also the first championship for a Bay Area team since 1977. The Renegade offense produced 55 hits, 37 RBI’s and 7 homeruns over the three game span. 2010 CCCAA State Champions Ramos, Jeff Johnson and Michael Ussery all collected 3 hits for Ohlone and a total of 5 RBI; Zach Johnson contributed 2 RBI’s; Cody Foster, Ryan Walterhouse, Michael Briseno each had 1 RBI. Justin Kuks put together a strong performance by going 7 innings and allowing only 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 7. George Asmus pitched 2 innings of relief and the Renegades headed to the championship in the winners’ bracket. 4 5
2011 Season Outlook Program Highlights 2010 CCAA STATE CHAMPIONS Won the baseball program’s first ever state title; first Bay Area junior college program to win the championship since 1972. DEVELOPING AND MOVING PLAYERS ON In 2010, two sophomores were taken in the MLB Draft, nine players received DI scholarships including top caliber schools such as: Oklahoma State, Oregon State, East Carolina, and San Jose State. 6 WINNING TRADITION Ohlone has a combined record of 74-21 and the most wins in the state over the past two seasons. NATIONAL RECOGNITION Ohlone Baseball finished 2009 and 2010 ranked 3 Polls. UNIQUE CAMPUS COMPETITIVE CONFERENCE ALL-AMERICAN/ALL-NORTHERN STATE ALL-CONFERENCE WINNING SYSTEM in the National Junior College Ohlone Baseball is played on the hillside of the Ohlone College campus, with a majestic view overlooking the city of Fremont and surrounding Bay Area. The Coast Conference is one of the premier conferences in the state on a yearly basis, ranking in the top five for conference RPI. It was only the second time in State Championship history that two teams from the same north state conference (Ohlone, San Mateo) faced off in the championship game. Five players have received All-American and All-Northern State honors over the past two seasons including the Big Stick Award and All-State Pitcher of the Year. Twenty-six players have been selected in the Coast Pacific All-Conference team in just two seasons. The system of baseball taught at Ohlone takes pride in developing young men on how to be a high quality and well-rounded person in the classroom, on the playing field, and ultimately in everyday life. rd Ohlone Baseball Team 2011 T The 2010 Ohlone Renegades captured their first ever California Junior College State Championship and tied the school record for wins from 2009 with 37. The team also broke the overall 2009 school record (37-11) by going 37-10 in 2010. The Renegades hosted Regional and Super-Regional playoffs for the second consecutive season before clinching a Final Four berth in Fresno, California. Ohlone Baseball’s commitment to success, on and off the field, continues with all twelve sophomores, from the 2010 class, transferring to four-year universities or to professional baseball teams. Heading into the spring season, the class of 2011 currently has three sophomore players signed to athletic-scholarships to Auburn, Fresno State, and the University of Washington after graduation. The Renegades return with an experienced staff on the mound, and a mix of new and returning players eager to continue building on the recent success and tradition of Ohlone Baseball. EVERYTHING COUNTS In his first season as Head Coach, Julian Russell plans on following the same “system” of baseball established over the past three seasons by placing a strong emphasis in doing the “little things” right in order to prepare the student-athletes for life after baseball. “The success of Ohlone baseball has been and will continue to be based on paying attention to the details in all aspects of the student-athlete’s daily life. Eating the right food, going to class and turning in homework on time, practicing hard and efficiently everyday, and taking pride in maintaining our home, and our field, are all key factors to building a championship caliber team,” said Coach Russell. “The coaching staff and academic counseling team is here to mentor the players for the real-world and teach them how to maintain a level of excellence they can carry for the rest of their lives. If we can move our players on to four-year institutions and help them on their path to receiving a degree, while establishing a good work ethic and strong character, then we have done our job as coaches. Ultimately that is the reason people choose this profession.” 7
