Some people like to
call it magic, but
Princess Tenko
calls her performances
very special illusions
Ḃy whatever name,
the magical smoke and
mirrors performed by the
49-year-old Niigata native
is sure to bring hefty
rounds of applause from
her audiences during weekend
performances at the
Southern Beach Hotel in
Itoman City. “This time,”
she says, “I’m going to
show Okinawan audiences
a very unknown show.”

in Okinawa in 2000
at the Okinawa Convention
Center.
Princess Tenko, who
lives in Las Vegas, Nevada
with her pet tigers, broke
into the magic and illusions
business back in 1976,
when she transformed her
musical career into that of
a sorcerer’s apprentice to
learn from Hikida Tenko,
the legend of Japanese
magic circles. The elder
statesman of magic picked
Princess Tenko, whose real
name is Mariko Itakura, to
carry his mantle, a move
that raised the ire of others
in the male-dominated
field by choosing her over
two male apprentices.
Her performances
contain elements of traditional
magic, but also
introduces monster type
animals. Since her North
American debut in 1994 at
New York City’s Radio
City Music Hall, Princess
Tenko has attained what
can only be described as
worldwide fame. She’s
had an American magicalgirl-inspired
cartoon series
developed on the basis of
her feats, and the toy
maker giant Mattel created
a line of fashion dolls in
her likeness.
A world traveler, even
when not performing
magic and illusions,
Princess Tenko has stirred
controversy with a couple
of trips to North Korea,
where she performed for
the country’s leader, Kim
Jong Il. She’s also become
the African Wild Animal
Conservation Fund’s world-

Candidates ready for
House election campaign
Elections for Japan’s House of
Representatives are at most only three months
away, and 15 candidates have already set up
election offices, held meetings are ready to
begin campaigning for the seats in four election
districts.
Political veterans are lined up in the First
Election District, which encompasses Naha City,
Kumejima Town, and Tokashiki, Zamami,
Aguni, Tonaki, South Daito and North Daito vil-

Japan rejects comments

referring to the realignment agreement
between Japan and the United
States that calls for relocating 8,000
Marines from Okinawa to Guam.
The Commandant of the U.S.
Marine Corps, testifying before the
United States Senate Military Affairs
Committee, told the senators “The transfer
of Marine Corps troops, or transfer of
the Futenma Air Station plan will be
very possible to look over again.” The
2006 realignment plan has been the topic
of countless discussions, debates and disagreements,
but Conway’s testimony
marked the first time a senior U.S. leader
spoke of changes.
Japan’s Vice Defense Minister was
quick to bash the four-star general’s
statements, saying his country sees no
need to alter the realignment plan. Kohei
Masuda responded to Conway’s thinking,
saying “The realignment of U.S.
Forces in Japan is a plan to be steadily
implemented according to the road map
agreed upon between Japan and the
United States in 2006.”
While underscoring “this point has
recently been confirmed” between the U.S.
President, Barack Obama, and Japan’s
Prime Minister Taro Aso, Masuda told
reporters “The contents of Commandant
Conway’s remarks, and where they are
positioned inside the U.S. Government, are
unclear.” On the local level, the American
Consul General for Okinawa, Kevin
Maher, reiterated there was no possibility
of the road map being reviewed.
Conway said transferring 8,000
troops to Guam will “cost more than
what we thought,” noting transfer
expenses and training costs leave him
“apprehensive for the training environment.”
He said there was a need for
“analysis and negotiate with Japan.”
Conway told the Senate Armed Services
Committee “we have some modifications
(to the Futenma relocation plan) we think
are worthy of consideration. The
Futenma replacement facility has to e
indeed a fully capable replacement for
what we’re giving up.”
The May 2006 agreement between
Japan and the U.S. raises “concerns
about training opportunities on Guam, in
the nearby islands, and the rest of the
Asia-Pacific Basin,” Conway said, “so
there are some things like that which we
certainly want to see considered and
negotiated as need be with the Japanese
before we slap the table.” The Marines
are supposed to be transferred to Guam
by 2014.

Osamu Ashitomi of the Liberal Democratic

Teruya, are ready for the campaign.
Included in the district are Urasoe and
Ginowan Cities, Nishihara, Kadena,
Chatan, Kitanakagusuku and Nakagusuku
Towns, as well as Yomitan Village.
Four candidates are registered in the
Third Election district, which covers
Okinawa, Uruma and Nago Cities, Motobu
and Kin Towns, and Kunigami, Ogimi,
Higashi, Nakijin, Onna, Ginoza, Ie, Iheya,
and Izena Villages. Chiken Kakazu is running
for the Liberal Democratic Party,
while Shuusei Arakawa represents the
Socialist Party, Denny Tamaki for the
Democratic Party ofJapan, and Ryo
Kowatari is running as an independent.
Kousaburo Nishime is running in the
Fourth Election District, representing the
Liberal Democratic Party. Chobin Zukeran
will represent the Democratic Party of
Japan. Included in the fourth district are
Itoman, Nomigusuku, Nanjou, Miyakojim
and Ishigakijima Cities, Haebaru, Yaese,
Yonabaru, Taketomi, and Yonaguni
Towns, and Tarama Village.
Soldier suspect in Koza
Music Town vandalism
An American Army corporal assigned
to Kadena Air Base is in Japanese police
custody, charged with breaking the glass in
a Koza Music Town elevator last weekend.
Okinawa City Police say Christopher
Ryan Pubst has confessed to the charges.
The 2:50 a.m. incident was captured on
surveillance cameras set in the elevator.
When a security guard saw the elevator’s
glass broken, he called police. As police
studied the surveillance video, then began a
search of the building, they found Pubst
still there, together with his friends.
Pubst, police say, broke the glass by
striking it with his fist. They say Pubst
was drunk at the time, but noted Pubst
refused to allow any alcohol detectors or
tests.
Navy hospital construction
begins despite mayor’s plea
Ginowan City’s mayor fought to the
very end to block the start to construction
of a new U.S. Navy hospital at the edge of
Camp Foster near the Futenma Shrine, but
lost the battle last month.
Construction on the hospital, which
was agreed to by the Special Action
Committee on Okinawa in 1996, began
May 11th. Mayor Yoichi Iha had long
argued “Why should the hospital be built
here, because the Marines are transferring
to Guam.” He’d asked instead that the
project be scrubbed and the land returned
to local owners.
Having failed on that approach, Iha
and Ginowan are launching a new appeal
for work to stop, citing very important historical
cultural properties in the area. Iha
and the city are asking Okinawa’s Self
Defense Agency to stop the project and
begin a new review of the transfer.
The hospital, the Okinawa Self
Defense Agency says, will have five floors
plus a basement, all built of reinforced concrete.
The 39,500 square meters hospital
will be complete this year, the agency says,
but said it didn’t know when the new hospital
would open. There are other related
facilities construction projects on the site,
including warehouses and barracks. The
Self Defense Agency says it will investigate
Iha’s claims there are burial cultural
excavations on the site.
Finger-pointing stymies
Yonaguni-Taiwan flights
It’s only 111 kilometers between
Yonaguni Town and Taiwan, but bureaucratic
and political red tape make the distance
seem totally beyond reach.
The Yaeyama District Municipality
Association has visions of tourism and
business expansion that would benefit the
southern part of Okinawa Prefecture, and
especially Yonaguni Town, by establishing
direct air links between the tiny Yonaguni
Town and Taipei. It seems logical, the
association says, and has worked out all the
details for both the Japanese and
Taiwanese governments.
An approval’s anything but easy, and
far from certain. The current way to fly
from Yonaguni to Taipei is to first fly to
Ishigaki, then Naha City, then south to
Taipei. The association proposes direct
flights between Yonaguni and Taipei, but
has encountered finger-pointing as each
country blames the other for why nothing
is happening, each saying “It’s a partner’s
problem.”
Japan’s government says “we have
done everything for the action, and are now
waiting for Taiwan’s answer.” Even the
Japan Defense Agency says it’s all up to
Taiwan, but the Taiwan side says “we have
no problem going for the short cut, but it’s
the Japanese side’s problem.” Japan and
Taiwan have no diplomatic relations, leaving
complications in the negotiation.
Base P.O. boxes confuse
the Japanese government
Okinawan municipalities have begun
distributing fixed-benefit ¥12,000 stimulus
payments to citizens, but have run into
some road blocks in getting the money to
nearly 300 Japanese living on U.S. military
installations.
The government’s got the money, but
can’t figure out how to navigate the U.S.
military’s post office box system. Efforts
to deliver the money to 288 individuals
failed, the documents bounced back
because the postal box numbers were
unknown or wrong. An official says the
problem is not just delivering the money
now, but also a problem when attempts
have been made to deliver election documents
and area promotion coupons.
Municipalities are now advising
Japanese who are eligible for the stimulus
money to properly register their on-base
postal box numbers. Municipalities say
“there is no way for us to check the Post
Office box numbers for these Japanese residents
who live on the base side.” Most of
the intended residents live or are registered
in Okinawa City, Chatan Town, Kadena
Town, Kitanakagusuku Town, Ginowan
City, Uruma City or Urasoe City.
A U.S. public affairs spokesman says
“there is no system to deliver the mail to
persons’ homes on base. People who live
on base should have a post office box;
everybody gets their mail through post
office boxes.” Japanese living on base are

Amainland Japan dance troupe is
making a return engagement to
Koza Music Town next weekend,
ready to promote Japanese dance.
A free show takes place June 20th at
Music Town, with Morikuni Ota, an
Okinawa dancer, teaming to demonstrate
Tamagusuku style Gyokusen kai. Ota’s
joined by another Okianwan dancer,

unique sexual assault training
The U.S.-based theater group Catharsis
Productions is scheduled to perform
several improvisational plays on U.S.
installations on Okinawa next week, educating
service members on the topic of sexual
assault.
Sex Signals, a two-person presentation
covering the sober topic of sexual assault in a
unique, often funny, fashion by directly
engaging audience members in an informative
and entertaining format. The events,
sponsored by Marine Corps Community
Services, take place June 15th ~ 19th.
Three shows will take place Monday,
all for service members. A Schwab Theater
performance starts at 9:30 a.m., while
Hansen Theater will be the venue for 1
p.m. and 3 p.m. shows. A 9:30 a.m. show

with Disney, has
brought the popular television
show Family Feud to the island
as part of celebrations of the
“Month of the Military
Family.” The USO / Disney
Okinawa version is based on
the popular American game
show, and families compete for
prizes by finding out ‘what the
survey says’ to their answers.
The Blanchong family
found they knew more than
their neighbors, at least the five
other families in competition
May 30th. The Kadena round
plays out at the Kadena Theater
on Saturday. Doors open at 10
a.m., and entry form submissions
can be completed right up
until the feuding starts at 11
a.m. Competitors are limited to
SOFA-status families. Teams
are comprised of two adults and
children between the ages of
5~17.
The event itself is open to
everyone to enjoy. The USO,
together with Exchange New
Car Sales, US Land, Peter’s
Place and Disney, is offering
free hot dogs and drinks while
waiting to come in, raffle prize
giveaways during intermission,

Naval Hospital to curtail
some services tomorrow
The U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa and
its branch clinics will be operating
with reduced services tomorrow as
ceremonies are held to welcome a new
commander.
Captain Brian S. Dawson will relinquish
his command to Captain Terry J.
Moulton, at the Foster Theater at 9 a.m.
tomorrow. Dawson’s heading to the U.S.
Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in
Washington D.C. Moulton is coming to
Okinawa from Millington, Tennessee,
where he served as Naval Personnel
Command’s Branch Head for the Medical
Department Officer Dist ribution Branch.
Administrative areas and walk-in services

Registrations, Billing Office and immunization

Exhibition now features summer garden plants
Gardening enthusiasts with a green
thumb, and those who simply
appreciate the beauty of tropical
flowers, foliage and trees, are
soaking up that beauty this week at the
Summer Garden Plant Market Exhibition
in Okinawa City.
The event sponsored by the Okinawa
City Petal Gardening Production
Association and the Okinawa Times newspaper
company runs through Sunday at the
Okinawa City Agriculture Study Center,
2380 Noborikawa. The exhibition, which
is open to the general public, features many
flowers and tropical fruit trees, as well as
bonsai trees, creation garden trees, gardening
trees and foliage plants.
Visitors have opportunities to quiz the
horticulturalists on just how they make
everything grow, and how to squeeze that
extra bit of beauty out of plants and trees.
Many of the plants and trees on exhibition
are available for sale throughout the week.
The exhibition caps Sunday afternoon
with a charity auction beginning at 2 p.m.

Zen lines focus of traditional Thai massage

Hannaryz is the league’s 13th

Kazuto Aono, also a former

coach and interpreter for Benoit.
The 41-year-old Benoit had
played with Saitama, then retired
at the end of the 2006-2007 season
and became the team’s head
coach. Under Benoit’s hand,
Saitama posted a 21-23 record in
2007-2008, then fell to 19-33 last
season.

University of Alabama, then 492
games in the National Basketball
Association for the Utah Jazz,
Orlando Magic and New Jersey
Nets. Benoit is already busy in
the new position, preparing for
the BJ-League player draft to be

young girl was attacked by a pit
bull and subsequently died, leaving
her concerned. She says she’s
addressed the issue to the U.S.
military, asking what “the military
people are doing raising pit
bulls.” She questions what the
military’s position is, and is taking
her questions to the military’s
general officer in charge.

An incident on May 4th has
triggered the latest worries, when
the American military notified the
Okinawa City police that “two pit
bull shave escaped from a home
located in Matasumoto area.
Please catch them.” Tomon’s
police officers did, with help
from 15 staff members from the
city office and Okinawa
Prefecture, apprehending the
fugitive dogs in about seven
hours.
“We want to ask the military
if they have regulations for raising
pets, and if the military has a
grasp on who the masters are,”
tomon says. “If they don’t, we
want to ask for improvement.”
The Okinawa City Office says
5,559 dogs are registered with the
city, including 12 pit bulls. None
of the animals registered are from
American military personnel,
although, she says, everyone
knows there are animals owned
by military families living in her
city.

Privacy concerns t o
halt school papers
More than two dozen
Okinawa municipalities
are studying guidance
from Okinawa Prefecture regarding
the practice of having children
write personal papers telling about
themselves, and at least four have
already abandoned the writings.
These papers might be
against personal information
rules, so were abolishing the system
of papers, a coordinated
announcement by Itoman City,
Haebaru and Nishihara Towns
and Ie Village says. It explained
that because these personal
school papers are writing about
childrens detailed information on
t o d a ys activities, character, and
weak and good points, the practice
has been halted.
The new law regarding personal
information protection has
Okinawa Prefecture alerting officials
at its elementary and junior
high schools that the concept of
having youngsters write about
their character, and giving support
or advice, is not appropriate. The
practice, officials say, have been
in use for many years, but is now
stirring discussion.
A total of 25 municipalities
are discussing the issue, and 10
say that while theres a need for
children to make papers, because
school papers are not suitable we
need to give proper education to
the children but if there s too
much detail written, it might be
necessary to reform them. Nine
municipalities say they don t
know yet what their stance on the
papers will be.
