Quick Reference Winter Classes quick reference winter classes Quick Reference Classes The “Quick Reference” section is a summary of classes. Refer to the “Credit Classes” section for course descriptions, room numbers, and instructors. Courses are listed in alphabetical order. Class details: www.olympic.edu/distanceclasses. Distance Learning General Info. Online Courses What is an online course? An online course is a course that you can take using your computer and the internet. What materials and equipment will I need? • Computer with internet access: While dial-up services will allow you to access the internet, most courses are faster to access and more comfortable to take with a high-speed or broadband connection. • Textbook: Most instructors require a textbook. Textbooks are available at the OC bookstore on the Bremerton campus or online at http://ocbookstore.com. How do I access my online classroom? • Please see the www.olympic.edu/distanceclasses to know where to access your course as instructors use a variety of places. Where can I get technical support? • For ANGEL based courses, go to http://angel.olympic.edu • Distance Learning provides technical, access, and other support for ANGEL based online courses. • Technical support and assistance is also provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by Presidium at 1-866-425-8412 (Toll free). • For all other online courses, please contact your instructor. Instructors provide technical, access and other support for their non-ANGEL based online courses. Online Course Fee ANGEL online course fees are $8 per credit. Telecourses What is a telecourse? Telecourses are VHS-based courses that combine VHS tapes of lectures and information with materials from the instructor. These materials can include study guides, assignments, examinations, and handouts. Courses are designed to be taken at home over a specified period of time with little contact between instructor and student. • Telecourse tapes are also available on a 24-hour loan from the Haselwood Library on the Bremerton campus, or at the Johnson Library on the Shelton campus. • Telecourse videos are also viewable on the Public Access stations for Comcast Cable (channel 12) or Wave Cable (channel 3). These are generally broadcast in the early morning hours. • Textbook: Most instructors require a textbook. Textbooks are available at the OC bookstore on the Bremerton campus or online at http://ocbookstore.com. • Syllabus and Other Course Materials: Most instructors require at least one on-campus meeting with students. This is generally an orientation that takes place at the Bremerton campus. Additional materials that students need are passed out at these sessions. Orientation times can be found at www.olympic.edu/distanceclasses. Telecourse Fee Each telecourse has a licensing fee of $30 regardless of the way the videos are viewed. This fee is passed on to the video producers for the ability to use their material. USB-Drive Courses What is a USB-Drive course? USB-drive courses, which were until recently called portable courses or POCO, are self-contained courses delivered on returnable USB memory stick drives. The courses are designed to provide students with little or no internet access a more interactive experience than a telecourse, but not as interactive as an online course. These courses are designed to be taken from home over a specified period of time with little or no contact between instructor and student. What materials and equipment will I need? • USB Drive: • USB drives are available at the appropriate division offices on the Bremerton campus or through the instructor. Please see www.olympic. edu/distanceclasses for information on where to get your USB drive. • Access to a Windows-based computer with a USB 2.0 slot. • USB drive software is self-contained and does not require additional software to be loaded. • Textbook: Most instructors require a textbook. Textbooks are available at the OC bookstore on the Bremerton campus or online at http://ocbookstore.com. • Syllabus and Other Materials: The USB is self-contained. All additional materials are loaded on or provided with the USB drive. USB Drive Fee All USB drive courses have an $8 per credit fee. Additionally, some courses (Sociology and Psychology) have an additional $30 licensing fee. What materials and equipment will I need? • Videos • Telecourse tape rentals are available through the Distance Learning department located in the Haselwood Library at OC Bremerton. Tape rental is $35 for the entire quarter. You must first pay the fee at the Cashier’s Office then bring a receipt to pick up the videos.
