The warrant in possession of the Lodge is dated June 5, — The first number was 316; it became No. 122 in 1847. MINUTES: All minutes previous to the year 1855 were destroyed by fire. Mount Morris Lodge, No. 316, was organized in 1818, and as all and papers relating to this Lodge are missing, but little is known its affairs; even the time when it ceased to work is unknown. It was in existence until about the year 1826, and, in all probability, it suffered the fate of others which were forced to succumb to the bitter hatred and persecution occasioned by the Morgan affair. It was not until the winter of 1846-47 that a successful effort was made to revive Masonry in Mount Morris. On March 4, 1847, a petition was prepared, asking for a dispensation, which was issued, and at a session of the Grand Lodge, held June 3, 1847, the Committee on Warrants reported that the dispensation had been returned, and recommended that a warrant be granted. On June 9, 1847, the warrant was granted. The signers to the petition were: William D. Morgan. John Vernam. Joseph Favor. Eli Lake. Alfred Dean. Henry Maxwell. Ebenezer Damon. Elias B. Driggs. Walker M. Hinman. Prentice Pendleton. George G. Williams. David A. Miller. The charter named as officers: William D. Morgan, Master; Henry Maxwell, Senior Warden; Walker M. Hinman, Junior Warden. The petition had the indorsement of Phoenix Lodge, No. 115, signed by: M. Brown, Master; Javan Bradley. Senior Warden; Joseph W. Richardson, Junior Warden; Jervis P. Beach, Secretary. THE DISPENSATION. "By the Most Worshipful John D. Willard, Grand Master of Masons of the State of New York: "WHEREAS, It has been represented to me that BROS. WILLIAM D. MORGAN, JOHN VERNAM, JOSEPH FAVOR, ELI LAKE, A. J. DEAN, HENRY MAXWELL, E. DAMON, ELIAS B. DRIGGS, WALKER M. HINMAN, PRENTICE PENDLETON, GEORGE G. WILLIAMS and DAVID A. MILLER, Master Masons of Mount Morris, in this State are desirous of being formed into a Lodge and their Memorial to that effect being duly recommended by the officers of Phoenix Lodge, No. 115, of Dansville, and the several petitioners vouched for by our well-known and Worshipful Brother, MERRITT BROWN, as worthy and well qualified Master Masons. THEREFORE BE IT KNOWN: That I, having full confidence in the aforesaid brethren, and being desirous of extending the light and advantages of a well regulated Lodge to said brethren and those who may be found worthy to unite with them in sustaining the Masonic Institution in its useful and honorable work, do hereby authorize and empower the petitioners aforesaid to meet together as a regular Lodge of Master Masons, admit members, form a code of by-laws and do all such acts and things as have been and ought to be done by Lodges under dispensation, and for this purpose I do hereby appoint our Worthy and Well-beloved Brother, WILLIAM D. MORGAN, Master; HENRY MAXWELL. Senior Warden, and WALKER M. HINMAN. Junior Warden, of said Lodge, to be held in the town of Mount Morris, in the County of Livingston, in this State, to be known as Mount Morris Lodge, until the first day of June, A.D. 1847, A.L. 5847, or until the dispensation for any irregularity in the conduct of said Lodge, be recalled by me or by the Grand Lodge at any intermediate time, and I do hereby enjoin upon said Mount Morris Lodge a strict observance of the Constitution and regulations of the Grand Lodge, and I direct that previous to, or on the first Tuesday of June next, this dispensation be returned to the Grand Secretary, with a copy of the records of the Lodge, their by-laws and a registry return of members and the amount of dues accruing thereon, with the names in full in a plain hand for registry. Given at the City of Troy and sealed with my private seal on the 30th day of March A.D. 1847, A.L. 5847. By the Most Worshipful Grand Master, JOHN D. WILLARD, Grand Master. Attest: R. R. BOYD, Grand Secretary. The Lodge first met in the Green Building, remaining here several years, when it moved to the Empire Block; on June 22, 1873, this building was destroyed by fire and the Lodge lost all of its property, including the warrant. The Grand Lodge ordered a duplicate warrant June 5, 1875. The next meeting place was in the Eagle Block, where it remained until December, 1873, when it moved to the Mills Block, remaining here but a short time when it returned to the restored Empire Block. On February 10, 1889, this building was again destroyed by fire, and the Lodge was for the second time without a home, its property gone up in smoke and flame. Shortly after this the Lodge secured quarters in the Mayer Block, where it remained until June 1896, when it again moved, this time to quarters which had been especially designed for its use in the building known as the Masonic Block; these quarters were dedicated by M.'.W.'. WILLIAM A. SUTHERLAND June 29, 1896. The Lodge has been unfortunate in losses by fire. In 1854 its first warrant was burned in a fire, and its present warrant is the third one it has had since 1847. 39
