Choosing a Medicare <strong>HMO</strong><br />

ot all Medicare <strong>HMO</strong>s are <strong>the</strong> same. Be<strong>for</strong>e you<br />

choose one, be sure to compare both <strong>the</strong> benefits and <strong>the</strong><br />

costs. The plan with <strong>the</strong> lowest monthly premium can<br />

cost you more if it has high co-pays or does not cover<br />

<strong>the</strong> services you need. And find out what your friends<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r people think about <strong>the</strong> <strong>HMO</strong>.<br />

Compare benefits. All Medicare <strong>HMO</strong>s cover <strong>the</strong> benefits<br />

in Parts A and B, which are listed on page 34. Some <strong>HMO</strong>s<br />

provide extra benefits that are not covered by Medicare.<br />

Most <strong>HMO</strong>s also provide Part D prescription drug coverage.<br />

Compare quality <strong>of</strong> care. All <strong>HMO</strong>s are regulated by <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>State</strong> <strong>of</strong> Cali<strong>for</strong>nia. This means <strong>the</strong>y must meet basic standards<br />
