What are Opera Widgets?
Opera Widgets are small, standalone Web applications that, like
all Opera products, are designed to work across platforms and
devices. Widgets help users cut through the clutter of the Web
to get to the information they want most. Widgets add speed and
convenience to the user experience, delivering an in-demand
service in an app-driven world. Opera Widgets are based on
open web standards, enabling deployment of feature-rich applications
across devices and platforms. Widgets can find a home
on any Internet-connected device.

Mobile users are demanding more services and applications that
make the most of their online experience on mobile handsets
and handheld devices, such as tablets. The growth in mobile
Internet usage and availability has led to the development of

Giving developers a head start
Employing web standards to create widgets simplifies development
and deployment, allowing for a “create-once, deployeverywhere”
structure. Widgets are created using open, standard

web technologies, such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript, resulting
in a larger pool of developers who can create multi-platform
widgets. Developers do not require special tools, different
programming languages or access to/knowledge of a closed,
proprietary system for development—creating W3C-standardscompliant
widgets is akin to writing a standards-compliant webpage.
The Opera Widgets SDK, made up of tools, libraries,
documentation and examples, eases the development process
even further while facilitating cross-platform widget development.
Opera Widgets SDK tools and resources
Opera Widget Emulator : With this tool, you can see how a
widget appears on different devices, including devices with low
bandwidth. Our updated version will also include emulated WAC
1.0 APIs (Accelerometer, Camera, etc) to enhance development
even further.
Opera Dragonfly : These developer tools allow you to debug
JavaScript and inspect CSS and the DOM.
JavaScript libraries: The Opera Widget SDK includes several
JavaScript libraries, for example for animations and media queries.
Documentation for beginners: This material presents the
basics for creating, packaging and distributing widgets, with tips
on making resources more consistent, as well as some graphical
and code resources to help speed up development.
Opera’s widget runtime for Android gives developers the
tools necessary to develop the next level of applications for
smartphones, while at the same time utilizing the Wholesale
Applications Community (WAC) as a distribution platform.

Never standing still
Opera Software works together wirh many industry leaders
to promote the use of open web standards in widget creation.
Opera has worked closely with Ericsson in the development of the
Ericsson eStore solution, which provides a much larger audience
and market for a wider array of applications. Alongside developing
consumer-facing technology solutions such as the eStore,
Opera has also worked with Ericsson and other operators, such
as Vodafone, to promote widget education and development
through events and widget competitions.
