• Named “Reckless” by the Marines fighting in the Korean War, a little Mongolian 

mare began her military career as a simple pack horse, and ended with the rank 

of Staff Sergeant! 

• At the Battle of Outpost Vegas in March 1953, Reckless carried almost five tons 

of ammunition over the course of a few days through “no man’s land” to the 

frontlines, and also carried wounded soldiers to safety! 

• The honors this brave mare received include: two Purple Hearts, a Presidential 

Unit Citation with star, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service 

Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Navy Unit
