THE OPENING TIP 

The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men’s basketball team heads to Tulsa, 

Okla., in search of its third straight victory when it takes on Oral Roberts 

on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Islanders are coming off of a 75-68 win over 

Central Arkansas on Thursday. 

QUICK HITS 

• The Islanders have one of the youngest teams in Division I, with an average 

age of 20 years, five months, 14 days heading into today’s matchup. There 

are no seniors on the team. 

• Hameed Ali scored a career-high 18 points to go with six assists and three 

steals at UCA. He is 12-for-19 from the field over the last two games. 

• The Islanders’ bench has averaged 30.7 points over its last three games. 

The bench has shot 34-for-76 (.447) over the three-game span.

run to pull away in a 64-52 win over 

the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi 

men’s basketball team. Damen 

Bell-Holter had 27 points and 13 

rebounds for the Golden Eagles (9- 

8, 4-1 Southland), while Will Nelson 

had his second double-double with 

18 points and 10 boards for the 

Islanders (2-13, 1-4 Southland). 

Bell-Holter did extensive damage 

at the free-throw line, converting 

on 11-of-12 at the stripe and going 

8-for-9 from the field. Warren Niles 

(14) and Shawn Glover (12) also 

finished in double figures for the 

Golden Eagles, who converted 23 of 

their 28 free-throw attempts. 

The Islanders struggled to find their 

outside shooting in the loss, going 

3-for-16 from distance. Hameed Ali 

added nine points and four steals for 

the home squad, but no other A&M 

– Corpus Christi player had more 

than six points.

Early on, neither team was able to 

get in much of a rhythm offensively, 

with the Islanders holding a 10-9 lead at the 11:01 mark. Will Nelson and Hameed Ali combined for all of the home 

squad’s 10 points at that juncture, with Nelson scoring six and Ali four. 

At that point, the visitors went on a 7-0 run to gain their first meaningful edge at 16-10. Two baskets by Bell-Holter 

and a three-point play by Shawn Glover comprised the rally. But the Islanders responded, putting up a 10-4 rally 

to tie the game at 20 a side. Joy Williamson and Ali each knocked down threes during the stretch for the Islanders. 

The Islanders gained a lead after a Zane Knowles putback made it 23-22, but ORU closed the half with a threepointer 

from Mikey Manghum to enter the locker room up two at 25-23. 

Out of the break, the two teams traded points with ORU pushing its lead to 30-27. But the Golden Eagles then went 

on a 7-0 run to push the advantage to 37-27. Knowles broke the string with a big dunk on a feed from Ali, but the 

visitors continued their staunch defense to stem the tide. The Islanders were able to cut it to 39-32, but ORU surged 

again, putting forth an 8-0 run to break the game open at 49-32. 

The Islanders were able to chip away from there, beginning with a 5-0 run, and a Williamson free throw got the 

deficit back to 10 at 54-44. The Islanders got it as close as eight on a three-point play by Nelson, but the Golden 

Eagles were able to finish things at the line to emerge with the victory.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES 

The Islanders and Oral Roberts will meet 

for just the third time in program history 

and the second time as fellow Southland 

Conference members. Texas A&M - Corpus 

Christi won the lone matchup against 

the Golden Eagles before ORU joined 

the Southland, taking an 86-81 victory 

in overtime in the Dick’s Sporting Goods 

Preseason NIT on Nov. 14, 2007. 

In the most recent game against the 

Golden Eagles, Oral Roberts pulled away 

in the second half to post a 64-52 victory. 

Damen Bell-Holter was the principal 

architect in the win, posting 27 points 

and snaring 13 boards. ORU did a bevy of 

damage at the stripe as well, going 23-for-

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES 

Oral Roberts has had a strong start to its 

time in the Southland Conference, sitting 

10-3 in league play after a 74-64 win over 

Sam Houston State on Thursday night. The 

Golden Eagles started league play 9-1 before 

falling in both road contests last week – at 

Northwestern State and at Stephen F. Austin. 

ORU is 15-10 overall after playing one of the 

toughest non-conference schedules in the 

Southland. 

The Golden Eagles are led by Warren 

Niles, who averages 19.0 points and 36.3 

minutes on the season. He is shooting 42.3 

points from beyond the arc as well. Damen 

Bell-Holter is nearly averaging a doubledouble, 

at 16.4 points and 9.7 rebounds. 

Shawn Glover averages 14.1 points, but he 

missed Thursday night’s game against SHSU 

due to injury and his status is uncertain. The 

Golden Eagles are one of the best shooting 

teams in the conference and lead the league 

in free-throw percentage by a wide margin. 

2012-13 Islanders Men’s Basketball 

YOUTHFUL LEADERSHIP 

He’s only a sophomore, but Houston 

native Johnathan Jordan has been thrust 

into the role of leader on the young Islanders 

squad. Jordan led the Southland in assists 

per game in 2011-12, and was also among 

the leaders in minutes per game. 

Jordan was outstanding as a distributor 

a season ago, but his growth as a scorer 

is notable. After averaging 6.5 points last 

year, the point guard has contributed 12.5 

points per game, largely on his ability to get 

to the rim and the free-throw line. Despite 

his 5-foot-10 frame, he leads the team with 

136 points in the paint and has hit a teambest 

103 free throws, including a 12-for-13 

performance at the line against McNeese. 

His 12 free throws are tied for fourthmost 

in a game in Islanders history and he 

recently cracked the single-season top 10 in 

the category. 

Perhaps more impressive is Jordan’s allaround 

game. His distribution is what he 

is most known for, and with 5.2 assists per 

game this year, he sits third in the Southland. 

He is already in the single-season top 10 in 

assists and is on pace to break his school 

record of 138, set last season. In league play, 

he has 70 assists to 31 turnovers. 

Jordan is also strong on the glass, having 

topped double-digit rebounds twice this 

season. He snared 11 caroms against SHSU 

for his third double-double of the year. He is 

one of just five players nationally averaging 

at least 10 points, five rebounds and five 

assists. He shows high on the stamina scale 

as well, where he is second in the Southland 

at 36.0 minutes per game. 

The diminutive guard is one of the most 

athletic Islanders, as evidenced by his two 

slam-dunk contest championships, thanks 

to his 48-inch running vertical leap. His 138 

assists last season set a school record. 

GROWING UP 

One of the primary reasons for the 

Islanders’ improvement in offensive 

efficiency has been the youngest member 

of last year’s freshman class. Hameed Ali 

showed flashes of being a strong player for 

the Islanders in 2011-12, delivering gamewinning 

shots against Sam Houston State 

and Utah State. 

But Ali, who turned 19 in August, has 

shown significant growth in his maturity, 

particularly as a vocal leader for the 

Islanders. Formerly one of the most shy 

members of the team, Ali has become a 

constant voice in practice – whether he is 

on the court or on the sidelines. 

Ali has had his two best offensive games 

of the season in the last week, netting 15 

points against McNeese State and following 

that up with a career-high 18 at UCA. 

Against the Bears, he went 7-for-10 from 

the field and added six assists and three 

steals. In a span of 1:01 in the second half, 

he hit a jumper, got a steal, drained a three, 

managed a second steal and fed Nate Maxey 

for an alley-oop. 

The sophomore started the season among 

the national leaders in assist-to-turnover 

ratio, and now has 46 assists to 28 turnovers. 

He leads the team and is fourth in the league 

with his 1.7 steal average. 

BENCH PRESSING 

Over the last three games, the Islanders 

have had strong performances off their 

bench. The bench had 32 points against 

Lamar, 26 against McNeese and then 34 in 

the UCA contest. The bench has shot 34- 

for-76 (.447) over the three-game span. Joy 

Williamson leads the team with 36 points 

off the bench in the last three, with Nate 

Maxey just behind with 17.

PRIDE AND JOY 

Among the Islanders, there is 

no personality quite like that of the 

appropriately-named Joy Williamson. The 

junior transfer’s ebullient and energetic 

personality is matched only by his intensity 

and pace on the basketball court. 

After missing three games due to injury, 

Williamson has been outstanding in his last 

three games. He led the team in scoring in 

both contests last week, netting 12 against 

Lamar and matching his career high with 

15 in the win over McNeese State. He was 

tremendously efficient as well, going 7-for- 

13 from the field and 3-for-6 from beyond 

the arc. He had seven points last game at 

UCA. He has pushed his average back near 

double digits at 9.9 per game. 

His career high in points against MSU 

would have been even higher had it not 

been for an uncharacteristic 5-for-10 

performance at the free-throw line. Still, he 

is among the league leaders in free-throw 

shooting (.700). 

His other 15-point performance came in 

the first game against UCA, where he went 

5-for-9 from the field, knocking down a pair 

of threes in a losing effort. That snapped 

a string where he failed to reach double 

figures in four straight contests. 

His finest game came against Houston, as 

the guard’s offensive ability shined brightly. 

He went 6-for-9 from the field for 13 points, 

filling the stat sheet in all other aspects of 

his game as well. Williamson snared seven 

rebounds, dished out four assists to no 

turnovers and registered three steals. 

Williamson played two seasons at 

Redlands Community College, where he 

was coached by current Islanders assistant 

Yaphett King. The Oklahoma City native 

scored 18.7 points and grabbed 8.2 rebounds 

at Redlands. 

SCORING DISTRIBUTION 

Over the last several games, the Islanders 

have seen their best offensive play when 

they are getting contributions from several 

players on the offensive end. The trend 

started at Sam Houston State, when, due 

to foul trouble, Johnathan Jordan and Will 

Nelson – the top two scorers on the team – 

were limited to 14 minutes in the first half. 

The Islanders had six different players 

score at least six points – Jordan, Nelson, 

Joy Williamson, Brandon Pye, Hameed Ali 

and Cole Martinez. The Islanders have had 

at least five different players with six points 

in seven of their last 10 games, including 

seven in the UCA contest. 

Against the Bears, the Islanders placed 

four players in double figures for the first 

time in conference play, as Hameed Ali (18), 

Will Nelson (14), Johnathan Jordan (11) and 

Dale Francis (10) finishing with 10 points or 

more. For Francis, it was a career high, and 

he became the eighth different player with a 

game in double figures this year. 

AS THE ISLANDERS TURN 

Despite the Islanders’ struggles in the 

win column and with offensive fouls, the 

team has been surprisingly efficient when it 

comes to turnovers. A&M - Corpus Christi 

is averaging 12.0 per game – fewer than 

their opponents’ 12.9 – and rank 55th in 

the nation. The Islanders have posted 10 

turnovers or fewer in five of the last eight 

games, including eight last time out against 

McNeese. They have eight games this season 

with 10 turns or fewer. 

Earlier in the year, the Islanders took care 

of the ball like no other time in program 

history. After posting six turnovers at Utah 

State – the second lowest total in school lore 

– the Islanders matched the school record 

with only five turns against Houston. 

Jan. 24 was a distinct exception, as the 

Islanders turned the ball over 20 times with 

Nicholls tallying just three steals. It marked 

just the fourth game this season that the 

Islanders had more than 15 turnovers (19 

against TLU, 18 against Oklahoma, 16 at 

Toledo). 

Nonetheless, it is a marked improvement 

from the ball control for the team from last 

season. A&M - Corpus Christi averaged 

15.2 turnovers per game and ranked 291st in 

the country out of 338 teams. The Islanders 

had 14 games with 15 turnovers or more last 

year, and just three with 10 or fewer. 

EARNING THEIR STRIPES 

The Islanders’ struggles at the free-throw 

line were well documented last year. A&M - 

Corpus Christi shot just 360-for-600 (.600) 

at the line a year ago. 

This year, the team has improved 

significantly, hitting at a .685 clip that has 

it second in the Southland. The Islanders 

have five regulars shooting .700 or better. 

Hameed Ali leads the way at .775, while 

Johnathan Jordan is shooting .730 and Joy 

Williamson is shooting .700. Brandon Pye 

(.727) and Cole Martinez (.750) have also 

done well at the stripe in limited trips there. 

The Islanders have stumbled the last two 

games, shooting 11-for-22 against McNeese 

and 12-for-20 against UCA, their fourth 

and fifth games at 60 percent or below.

THE OOP TO HIS ALLEY 

The most physically noticeable player on 

the Islanders is 6-foot-11 Nate Maxey. The 

big man has one of the longest wingspans 

in the country with his 7-foot-10 reach, 

and he has already developed a reputation 

as one of the top shot blockers in the league. 

He backed up that reputation when he set 

a school record with nine swats against 

Houston. 

The other play he has gained notoriety 

for has been when he is on the receiving 

end of an alley-oop, usually from fellow 

sophomore Johnathan Jordan. Maxey has 

finished off several alley-oops in the last 

four games, including a stunning reverse at 

McNeese State. Maxey leads the Islanders 

with 31 dunks on the season. 

His performance in the home game 

against UCA was his finest offensive game 

in an Islanders uniform. The big man went 

6-for-8 from the field and scored a careerhigh 

13 points. With 88 career blocks, he is 

now fourth on the Islanders’ all-time list.

The Islanders’ only true “big man” 

came to Corpus Christi along a path that 

took him from the Bahamas to Louisiana 

to Mississippi and finally to the Island 

University. Zane Knowles stands 6-foot- 

9 and 240 pounds to make him the most 

imposing big man on the team. 

He battled through a handful of injuries 

at the beginning of conference play, and 

has recently upped his game. He had nine 

points and eight boards against Lamar, then 

followed that up with 10 points and seven 

caroms in the McNeese State game. He also 

had five blocks over the two games. 

Knowles’ finest game of the season came 

at Iowa, when he went 6-for-10 from the 

field for a career-high 12 points. He also 

notched a career-best 33 minutes of action 

and snared eight rebounds in a losing effort. 

A native of Nassau, Bahamas, Knowles 

played sparingly as a freshman at Grambling 

before electing to move on to Pearl River, 

where he was a First Team Mississippi All- 

Star.

YOUTHFUL ENTHUSIASM 

The Islanders have one of the youngest 

teams in Division I, with an average age 

of just over 20 years, and are one of just a 

handful of teams nationally that have no 

seniors on their roster. In a fact that will 

make most reading this feel old, only one 

player – Will Nelson – was born in the 

1980s. Just half of the Islanders roster is 

over 20 years old, and 10 of the players on 

the team are freshmen or sophomores. 

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi is also one 

of just eight teams that entered the season 

with an average of less than one year of 

experience per player. The Islanders had 14 

years of college playing experience among 

their 15 players, though only nine of those 

years were at the Division I level. 

In total, the Islanders started this season 

having played a total of 2,933 minutes in 

Division I, just under 196 minutes per 

player. Taking Johnathan Jordan out of 

the mix and the remaining 14 players had 

averaged just 142 minutes in their careers.

HE IS AN ENGLISHMAN... 

In a freshman class that is punctuated by 

a trio of skilled guards – Brandon Pye, Jelani 

Currie and Cole Martinez – the first-year 

player who has shined brightest has been a 

post from Leighton Buzzard, England, Dale 

Francis. The Canarias Basketball Academy 

product has been one of the most consistent 

performers for the Islanders as of late. 

In conference play, Francis has averaged 

20.8 minutes, including a career-high 31 

at Nicholls. He has topped 17 minutes 

in every conference game but one – last 

Saturday against McNeese, where he got 

into significant foul trouble. 

A strong defender, Francis is averaging 

2.7 boards in Southland action, including 

five each at Nicholls and at McNeese. He 

has a strong jump shot, and his last time 

out, he went 5-for-7 for a career-best 10 

points at UCA. Over the last four games, he 

has shot 13-for-16 from the field. He is 20- 

for-37 (.541) and has six blocks and seven 

steals in league action.

SITTING OUT 

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men’s 

basketball will be ineligible for the 

postseason in the 2012-13 season, due to 

low Academic Progress Rate scores that 

occurred in the 2010-11 school year. No 

Islander who has played under Coach 

Wilson has cost the team an APR point. 

In addition to missing the postseason, 

the Islanders are also limited in their 

practice time during the year – a fact that 

weighs more heavily on such a young team. 

The Islanders are limited to one fewer day of 

practice and four fewer hours per week. 

WHERE THERE’S A WILL... 

No newcomer on the Islanders roster 

came in with higher expectations than 

junior Will Nelson. The skilled wing was 

expected to play a major role in the team’s 

offensive output, and he has shown on 

several occasions that he has the ability to 

fulfill those expectations. 

The McNeese State contest was the most 

recent example, as the Louisiana native 

thrived in his return to his home state, 

knocking down four threes en route to 

24 points and nine rebounds. It marked 

Nelson’s third game this season with 20 

points. 

He really heated up on both ends after 

beginning conference play. He posted the 

first double-double for the Islanders this 

season with 24 points and 14 rebounds 

against Stephen F. Austin, going 9-for-17 

from the field. He added his second doubledouble 

against Oral Roberts, when he had 

18 points and 10 rebounds. He then posted 

double-doubles in both games two weeks 

ago at Nicholls and Southeastern La. His 

career high in points is 28, when he added 

eight rebounds against Houston. 

The junior college transfer is averaging 

13.4 points and 7.4 rebounds for the 

Islanders, both of which top the team and 

are in the conference’s top 10. During league 

play, he has posted an average of 14.1 points 

and 8.5 rebounds. With his five double-digit 

rebound games in conference play, Nelson 

is tied with SFA’s Taylor Smith for second in 

the Southland, behind ORU’s Damen Bell- 

Holter (8). 

Nelson is attending his fifth different 

school in the last five years. He took 

last season off of basketball to focus on 

academics at Dodge City Community 

College. Prior to that, he played a year each 

at Hutchinson CC and Baton Rouge CC 

after graduating from Port Allen (La.) High 

School.

From the first day of Willis Wilson’s tenure at the Island 

University on March 25, 2011, he made it instantly clear what 

his goal for the program was. 

“We want to be the premier program in the Southland 

Conference and follow down the paths of a Butler, Gonzaga, 

George Mason or Virginia Commonwealth.” 

Taking a program with one NCAA Tournament appearance 

and just 12 years of Division I history into a place alongside 

the premier names in college basketball is a tall task. The first 

step is building a culture and foundation for the Islanders. 

The program’s philosophy for recruiting student-athletes 

– Character, Toughness, Talent – will be a major step in 

the building process for the Islanders. These attributes 

in basketball players that work hard will build Islanders 

Basketball into a championship program. 

The first year of the Willis Wilson era saw a team with just 

10 scholarship players, including 10 newcomers and just two 

players with significant Division I experience, take on one of 

the most challenging non-conference schedules in the nation. 

And though the end of the season record showed 6-24, the 

Islanders played all 30 games against Division I opponents and 

had 18 games within striking distance in the closing minutes. 

In a league where freshmen rarely provide impact minutes, 

the Islanders had five frosh on the floor regularly, including 

point guard Johnathan Jordan, who set a school record 

with 138 assists in his first year as a college athlete. Jordan, 

who averaged 31.4 minutes per game, led the Southland 

Conference in assists per game and finished third in the league 

in assist-to-turnover ratio. Additionally, fellow freshman Nate 

Maxey was third in the Southland in blocked shots, and nearly 

doubled the previous record for blocks by a freshman with his 

48 swats on the year. 

Freshmen weren’t the only ones to see significant 

improvement. Junior Terence Jones was given honorable 

mention by the league after averaging 13.7 points per game, 

while senior Chris Hawkins-Mast upped his scoring 250 

percent from the year before with 12.7 points per game. 

Both players finished in the league’s top 10 in scoring during 

conference contests, as Jones averaged 14.7 points and 

Hawkins-Mast 14.1. 

Before coming to the Island University, Wilson served 

two seasons as an assistant to Josh Pastner at the University 

of Memphis. In two years, he saw the Tigers go 49-19 and 

advance to the postseason both years. During the 2010-11 

season, the Tigers went 25-9, won their fifth Conference USA 

Championship and a berth in the 2011 NCAA Tournament. 

In his first season for the Tigers, Wilson helped guide the 

Tigers to a 24-10 overall record and a National Invitation 

Tournament (NIT) berth. 

Wilson became one of the most respected coaches in the 

country in his time as the head coach at his alma mater, Rice. 

In 16 years leading the Owls, Wilson posted a career record 

of 219-246, leading the team to the postseason three times in 

his tenure. He is the school’s all-time winningest coach, and 

his reputation in the collegiate coaching circles – and across 

college basketball – is impeccable. 

Wilson had the most winning campaigns in Rice basketball 

history during his time as the head coach. His 2003-04 squad 

recorded a 22-11 overall record, and the 22 victories were the 

second-most for a single season since World War II. Wilson 

guided the Owls to 60 wins in a three-year span from 2002- 

05, marking the second-most victories in a three-year stretch 

in school history. 

The Silver Spring, Md., native also led the Owl program to 

the most postseason appearances since 1950. Wilson guided 

the Owls to three National Invitation Tournaments (NIT) – in 

1993, 2004 and 2005. Rice’s first round win at Wisconsin in 

the 1993 NIT was the program’s first postseason victory since 

the 1954 NCAA Tournament. Wilson was also an assistant on 

the Rice coaching staff when the Owls earned an NIT berth 

in 1991. 

In his tenure at Rice, Wilson coached 17 all-conference 

performers, including 2007 Conference USA Player of the 

Year Morris Almond. Almond, a 2007 NBA Draft first round 

pick, and Michael Harris (2005) both earned All-America 

accolades. Wilson also had four players pick up CoSIDA 

Academic All-District honors, including Adam Peakes who 

was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America selection. 

The 2004 team was Wilson’s most successful, as it won 

22 games including the BP Top of the World Classic 

championship. For his leadership in 2004, Wilson became 

the first Rice basketball coach to be selected as the National 

Association of Basketball Coaches District 9 Coach of the 

Year since the award began in 1970. During the 2005 season, 

the Owls won 19 contests and advanced to postseason action 

in consecutive seasons for only the second time in school 

history, as Michael Harris and Jason McKrieth again were 

named all-conference. 

One of his best performances was in 1998-99, when Rice 

finished 18-10 to equal the third-best turnaround in NCAA

history. The Blue and Gray claimed 

sole possession of third place and went 

13-1 at home, including a streak of nine 

straight victories. As the Mountain 

Division’s third seed, Rice advanced to 

the WAC Tournament, where the team 

defeated San Jose State, 64-61, before 

falling to 25th-ranked New Mexico in 

a two-point loss (51-49) in the second 

round. Wilson was the pick of the 

league media and coaches as the WAC 

Mountain Division Coach of the Year. 

Prior to taking over the reins of 

the Rice program, Wilson spent the 

1991-92 campaign as an assistant on 

Mike Montgomery’s staff at Stanford. 

The Cardinal finished the season with 

an 18-11 overall record and a 10-8 

Pac-10 mark for fourth place in the 

league. Stanford earned an NCAA 

Tournament bid and lost in the first 

round to Alabama. Wilson coached 

All-American Adam Keefe, who 

finished his collegiate career as one of 

four players in NCAA history to have 

2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds while 

shooting 60 percent from the floor in 

a career. 

Wilson began his collegiate coaching 

career as an assistant at his alma mater 

in 1985-86. After a one-year stint as a 

head coach at Houston’s Strake Jesuit 

Prep, Wilson returned to Rice as an 

assistant from 1987-91. As a member of 

the Rice staff, Wilson helped the Owls 

improve their Southwest Conference 

standing each year. During Wilson’s 

final year as a Rice assistant, the Owls 

finished fourth in the league and 

received a bid to the NIT. The winning 

record was Rice’s first in 20 years and 

the postseason appearance marked its 

first in 21 seasons. 

After arriving on the Rice campus 

in August 1978, Wilson was a fouryear 

letterman for the Owls. He cocaptained 

the Owls to a 15-win season 

in 1982 and was a teammate of former 

NBA star and Rice Athletic Hall of 

Fame member Ricky Pierce. Wilson, a 

Will Rice College Fellow and member 

of the college court, graduated with a 

Bachelor of Arts degree in political 

science in 1982. He also participated in 

the Rice NCAA Volunteers for Youth 

program. 

Wilson and his wife, Vicki, have 

three children, daughter, Kristin, and 

twin sons, Zachary and Keenan.
