Game 3 • at Pacific
Oral Roberts 69
Pacific 67
November 19, 2012
Stockton, Calif. (Alex G. Spanos Center)
STOCKTON, Calif.-Oral Roberts got 56 of 69 points from three starters, including late
baskets by Warren Niles as the Golden Eagles started a four-game road streak with a 69-67
victory at Pacific late Monday night.
The Golden Eagles (2-1) led for more than 35 minutes of the game but found themselves
trailing late as Pacific (1-2) continued to hit from beyond the arc, connecting on 10
3-pointers in the game, and leading with less than four minutes to play.
“It was a great win,” said Coach Scott Sutton. “Any time you can go on the road and get
a win this early in the year it takes a terrific effort. I’m really proud of our guys. I thought
we played really well and built an 11-point lead but we turned the ball over and let them
back in it. When they took a three-point lead I was really proud of how they responded. I
thought they overcame some adversity and I thought they grew up a little bit tonight to
fight back and win a tough basketball game. I’m really proud of these guys. Warren made
some big time plays, Steven made some big time plays and Damen did as well. Your veteran
guys have to step up and make plays, especially on the road, and they did that tonight.”
Down one with 3:16 to go, ORU got a 3-pointer by Damen Bell-Holter—his first of the
season—and ORU would never trail again. A Ross Rivera jumper tied the game for the
eighth time, but back-to-back baskets by Niles, part of his 26-point effort, iced the game
for ORU.
Niles scored 26-plus for the second game in a row after dropping 29 against St. Gregory’s,
while Steven Roundtree added 19 points and Bell-Holter had his first double-double of the
season with 11 points and 11 rebounds, leading ORU to a 36-22 rebounding advantage.
Lorenzo McCloud had 13 points to lead the Tigers, while Khalil Kelley added 11 points.
Including those two, the Tigers had seven players score at least eight points in the game.
Game 4 • vs. Loyola Marymount (Great Alaska Shootout)
Loyola Marymount 66
Oral Roberts 75
November 22, 2012
Anchorage, Alaska (Sullivan Arena)
ANCHORAGE, Alaska-Warren Niles posted his second career 30-point game,
leading Oral Roberts (3-1) to a 75-66 victory over Loyola Marymount (2-2)
Thursday night in the opening round of the Great Alaska Shootout.
With the victory, ORU has won the opening round of the tournament in each
of its two appearances (2005). Niles’ other 30-point game was a career-high 39
points at IUPUI his freshman year, coming close to that mark on Thursday with
33 points. Niles was also honored as the Carrs/Safeway Player of the Game for his
performance.
Along with Niles, Shawn Glover had 11 points and Steven Roundtree added
10, while Alaska-native Damen Bell-Holter continued to pound the glass pulling
in 13 rebounds to go with his eight points.
ORU shot 52 percent (26-50) for the game, including a sizzling 64 percent
(16-25) in the second half as the out-scored LMU 45-39 in the frame.
The Lions were led by Anthony Ireland who had a 30-point game of his own,
and Ashley Hamilton added 15, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the hot-shooting
Golden Eagles.
In addition to seven 3-pointers, ORU dominated the paint as well, out-scoring
LMU 36-30 near the basket and out-rebounding the Lions 32-29.
The Golden Eagles trailed the majority of the first half and were back as many
as five points, but grabbed a late lead in the half after knocking down free throws,
taking a 30-27 advantage into the break. It was 23-18 Loyola Marymount at the
6:58 mark in the first half after a Godwin Okonji layup, but a Mikey Manghum
3-pointer sparked ORU and the Golden Eagles closed the half on a 12-4 run.
