November 2012
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
November already, where have the days gone? It will soon be time to “fall back” and the
ritual of the clocks heralding the coming of winter and even more activity at OEHS.
Remember to turn your clocks back, 1 hour, on Sunday, November 4 th .
As this month comes to an end I would like to reflect on a wonderfully successful
Homecoming week capped off by a great Homecoming Pep Assembly and Dance.
Congratulations to all of our students and staff for making this a memorable event.
On November 6th, Americans have the opportunity to exercise the most important responsibility we have
in a democracy – the right to vote. I don’t have to tell you that every vote counts and your vote can
determine the future. This Election Day I encourage you and your family to play an important part in our
great democracy. Your vote will help determine the future of our nation, and the future of a government of,
by, and for all people.
Parent Teacher Conferences are being held November 5 and 6. Teachers will be available in both the
Main Gym and Auxiliary Gym from 3-8 PM on Monday, November 5 th . No appointment is necessary.
However, if you can’t attend the conferences on Monday, teachers will also be available on Tuesday,
November 6 th from 8-11 AM. You may schedule an appointment to meet with teachers on Tuesday by using
the PTC Wizard at: https://oehs.ptcwizard.com Instructions of how to use the system can be found on our
website. Of course, our faculty can always be contacted by phone or email if you have a concern. Phone
numbers and email addresses can be found on the Staff Directory on our website. www.oswego308.org/
schools/oehs
On Monday, November 5th, 2012, both Oswego and Oswego East High Schools are scheduled to have an
early release school day. That day will be used to administer the EXPLORE test to all freshmen students, the
PLAN test to all sophomore students, and a practice ACT to all juniors. Students will be dismissed at 11:30
a.m. that morning after testing. These tests serve as an accurate indicator of student achievement on the
PSAE, the important standardized test given to all juniors in the state of Illinois each spring. Due to the
incredibly important nature of this test, student attendance is vital. For more information on these tests,
students and parents may visit the Educational Planning and Assessment System website at
www.act.org/epas.
Senior students will not be testing and therefore will not be in attendance November 5th,as all staff will be
participating in testing activities. Regularly scheduled classes will resume for all students on Wednesday,
November 7th; Tuesday, November 6 is a non-attendance day for all students due to Parent-Teacher
Conferences. This additional day afforded to seniors will be a great opportunity to visit a college or
vocational center of their choice.
November 29 th, our Advanced Placement teachers will be presenting the structure of AP curricula and the
rigors of successfully completing those courses at 6:30 p.m. in our Performing Art Center. Please join us for
an evening of interaction and information.
Graduation will be here before we know it! In the past, we have held the graduation ceremonies at OEHS
but…. have outgrown our indoor facility and because we can’t predict the weather, it isn’t always possible to
hold it in the stadium. Therefore, in an effort to allow for more guests and to provide a more dignified
ceremony for our well deserving seniors, we will hold our 2012-2013 graduation ceremony at Northern
Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 1 at 7
PM. We will be sending more information in the coming months so…watch the website for more
information.
I am thrilled to see so many of our students engaged in the learning process and participating in
extra-curricular and community service activities. Yes, I am the PROUD Principal of the students
Homecoming week 2012 was a huge success!
During school, spirit points were collected for the class with the most spirit. After adding in
points from dressing up for each spirit day, lunch games, hallway decorating, the penny drive,
assembly games, class cheers, and class games, the senior class won the spirit trophy followed
by the sophomores, juniors, and then freshmen. At the homecoming dance, students danced the
night away! Now that Homecoming week is over, Student Council begins to plan the for the
blood drive on November 2. Students 16 and above can sign up at their lunches if they would
like to donate blood.

New Sophomore Spirit Crew
In the past two months, a new club for
sophomores has formed here at Oswego
East, the Sophomore Spirit Crew. This is a
club where students come together and
share ideas on how to give the sophomore
class that “extra something.” The Spirit Crew
is committed to not only bring together the
class of 2015, but positively contribute to the sense of spirit around all of
Oswego East.
Spirit Crew members recently elected four officers: Daisy Oceguera was
elected President, Andrea Birtles -Vice President, Ali Dorn - Publicity
Manager, and Noelle Sather - Secretary. These officers and members of the
Spirit Crew came together after school on Tuesday, October 9 th and decorated
the sophomore hallway for Homecoming 2012. With numerous creative ideas
and hard work from all the members, the hallway took second place right
behind the Seniors!
Spirit Crew is a fun easy way to get involved, raise money for the sophomore
class, and share ideas regarding spirit at Oswego East. New members are
always welcome to attend out weekly meetings on Thursdays at 6:50 am in
B211. If you have any questions or want more information, please contact the
Spirit Crew sponsor, Ms. Schremp @nschremp1006@oswego308.org.

Increasing Students’ Reading Ability Starts at Home
Research proves that of all academic subjects, reading is the
most sensitive to family influence. The College Board, the
organization in charge of the Advanced Placement (AP) courses,
found that “reading achievement is... dependent on learning
activities in the home” more so than math or science achievement.
Helping your child become an effective reader supports his
success in English classes, but can also make a difference in their
ability to succeed in all subject areas.
To support a reading environment at home, these simple suggestions can make a big
difference in helping your child become a more advanced reader. By putting a few simple
strategies in place, you can have a powerful impact on your child’s literacy and ability to learn.

Promote a positive attitude about reading.
Be aware of your child’s reading interests and provide those materials.
Talk with your child often about family events, interests, and activities at school.
Have books, magazines, and newspapers available for your child to read.
Read in front of your child. Show your child that reading is valued.
Read something together and talk about what you’ve read.
As you read, draw your child’s attention to new words or key words.
Look up new words together in the dictionary or online.
Go to the library together and register your child for a library card. Addresses and
websites for your local library are printed in this newsletter for your convenience.
Another quick way to involve yourself in your child’s reading achievement is to ask
questions about what they are reading in school. You may want to read the same books or
articles on similar topics with your child to further enhance the learning taking place in the
classroom. By asking questions about what your child is reading, you are helping him think
about what has been learned. Questions can also help you understand more about what is
happening in your child’s educational life. Below are some questions you could ask your child
about reading. The reading skill you would be fostering is noted.
1. Could you summarize the section you just read?
2. Who are the main characters? What is the main idea? (summarizing)
3. What do you think will happen next? Why? (predicting)
4. What do you picture as you read? (imaging)
5. How does this information link to other subjects? (connecting)
6. What do you think about this idea? (connecting)
7. What is the conflict or problem in the story? (summarizing)
8. Are there words in this piece that are new to you? (vocabulary development)

Increasing Students’ Reading Ability Starts at Home continued.
If your child doesn’t like to read or is not motivated to read, research shows that you
have the most impact on positively influencing your child to gain a more positive outlook.
Perhaps giving your child options of materials to read would encourage him to be more
motivated. Research suggests that if a child is allowed to select reading materials – and is
given considerable latitude in that choice (books, magazines, newspapers, CD-ROMS, iBooks
or other technology-centered reading) – that he will be more likely to enjoy the experience and
continue to read. As a parent, it might be difficult to refrain from making value judgments about
the quality of what your child chooses to read, but growing a motivated reader begins with the
child feeling good about what he is reading and enjoying the experience.
Overwhelmingly, the family’s role in children’s learning is undisputed: you have the most
influence in supporting your child’s reading growth. Think your child doesn’t want to talk to you
about school and reading? The National Commission on Children found that 48% of high
school students would like to talk to their parents more about what they are reading and doing
in school. Go ahead and get the conversation started. You may be surprised how much your
child has to say!
OEHS is Helping Our Wolves with Love
With a crisp chill in the air, the changing leaves on the trees, and pumpkin spice
lattes, it can only mean one thing...the holiday season is quickly approaching!
Some of us are gearing up for Halloween, planning menus and travel plans for
Thanksgiving, and maybe even secretly hoping to hear some holiday tunes before
“Black Friday”. But for many families, however, the idea of the holidays
approaching can be overwhelmingly stressful, lonely, and financially taxing. Five
years ago, Oswego East High School began a new fundraising campaign to
support students whose holidays may be afflicted with financial hardship. Modeled after the United Way
“Forgotten Teens” program, H.O.W.L. (Helping Our Wolves with Love) is an opportunity for the Oswego
East student body, staff and community members to join forces and remember those teens in need.
Teens from the ages 15-19 are usually the ones who are forgotten during the holiday season. This
includes many families here in the 308 community that do not have enough money to purchase gifts for
the holidays. Over the past five years, Oswego East has planned various fundraisers involving
students, staff and community. Fundraisers have included Dominos Pizza Days, Famous Dave’s Day,
sales of an Oswego East Staff Cookbook, and Buona Beef Days. H.O.W.L.’s most successful
fundraiser, however, has been Donut Days here at the school. Dick’s Mini Donuts has partnered with
Oswego East and donates 40% of sales to the H.O.W.L. program. Donut Days typically take place on
early dismissal days, during parent/teacher conferences, beginning of the year schedule pick-up, Open
House, and graduation. The money raised is then distributed amongst students (whom have been
identified by Oswego East staff as homeless or in
need) in gift card form. To protect their privacy all
of the names of students receiving gift cards remain
confidential. Last year Oswego East was able to
purchase 65 gift cards in the amount of $25 each.
Providing this small gift for 65 students is an
amazing accomplishment, however there are so
many more students and families that could benefit
from this program and so much more our Oswego
East student body, staff and community can do to
make the 2012 holiday season our best ever.
If you or anyone you know would like to assist
with the H.O.W.L. program or make a donation,
please feel free to contact Brianne Kalusniak,
Oswego East School Social Worker, at
(630)636-2244 or bkalusniak0510@oswego308.org.
Monetary donations can also be dropped off in the
OEHS Student Services department.
H.O.W.L. is also proud to announce its recent
partnership with Jamberry Nails. Jamberry
Nails will be sold at the Churchill Club Holiday
Stop and Shop event on November 11, 2012.
Stop by and see what new and exciting patterns
are available! 100% of sales for all holiday
patterns will be donated directly to the OEHS
H.O.W.L. program.
career/college opportunities.
You don’t know what actual Chinese food is until you taste it, and once
you have it, you’ll never go back! We experienced this in Mandarin Club
on Monday October 15, students and Mandarin Teacher Mrs. Liu made 炒
面 Chao Mian (Fried Noodles). The students broke up into three different
groups: The cooks, the prep team, and the clean up crew. When all of it was set and done the
students dug into their first meal made together. It was delicious, and like no other Chinese food
OEHS Band and Choir News
Throughout the month of October, all of our bands at Oswego
East High School have maintained a busy rehearsal and
performance schedule. During the home football games, the
Beasts of the East Marching Band has performed the energetic
2012 Blood, Sweat and Tears Show. On October 11th, the
Marching Band performed in front of over 1000 fellow high school
musicians during the 2012 Panther Review.
Several of our band boosters helped by donating products or by
working during the Homecoming Dance within
the concession stand and the bake sale during
the Homecoming football game. Thank you to all
of the band families who were able to provide
support for these events. At the conclusion of
October, all of the curricular ensembles
performed during concerts. These concerts
featured the talents of freshmen-senior instrumentalists in Concert Band,
Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and Wind Symphony. Throughout the month, the OEHS Jazz Band
has been busy with rehearsing for the upcoming November 14th performance at OHS. During this
performance, our jazz musicians will have the opportunity to work with the internationally renowned
Northern Illinois University Jazz Ensemble and their conductor Ron Carter.
All band students are currently participating in a cheesecake, fruit, cheese,
and sausage fundraiser. Money raised through this fundraiser will help students
pay for upcoming band trips. The fundraiser ends on November 14th, and the
items will be delivered on December 15th. Please contact Mrs. Kelly O'Neill if
you have any questions about the fundraiser.
The first choir concert will be held at the PAC on November 1st
at 7pm. Our Winter Choir & Band Concert on December 11th at
7pm, which will feature our all of our choir & band students, including
jazz & pop groups. Our vocal jazz group, Spotlight, will also be doing
some caroling around the area. The following events are open to the
public: Oswego Christmas Walk during the evening of December 7
(including a performance at the Little White Schoolhouse that
evening), and the Oswego Park District "Holiday Express" event the
following weekend. We will also be performing at a holiday party for
patients of the Rush-Copley Heart Center.
On Tuesday, October 2nd, several OEHS singers and instrumentalists auditioned to be a part of the
IMEA District 9 Festivals. District 9 is extremely competitive, and these students should be very proud
of this accomplishment! The Jazz Festival is on November 10th at Naperville Central HS, and the
District Senior Festival is on November 17th at Hampshire High School. All-State results will be
OEHS Drama Club Presented its Fall Play
Almost, Maine
The theatre season began at Oswego East with the
presentation of Almost, Maine. In the middle of winter in
Maine, the residents of the small town of Almost showed us
what love is and what it is not and also what it could be.
A talented cast and crew of students from all grade levels,
under the direction of Mr. Gary Smiley, worked very hard to
produce this romantic comedy, where love is lost and found
when you least expect it!
Congratulations to
the OEHS
Drama Club!
