Greetings friends & supporters of
Otterbein St. Marys!
Once again, we welcome the Advent
season in preparation for Christmas and our
Lord’s birth. I hope that your holiday
preparations go smoothly and that our focus
remains true to the “reason for the season”!
On an interesting side note, our
community has welcomed a new, “special”
resident in the form of a beautiful white
pelican that has joined the flocks of Canadian geese that
frequent our surroundings.
He/she really is easy to spot,
and the residents, partners &
family members have enjoyed
many sightings & photo
opportunities. Driving on SR
364, this feathered friend can
usually be seen along the
shoreline near the gazebo.
What an inspired event as a kick-off to Advent – so many talented
individuals & groups from area churches! I leave you with an inspiration
entitled, “Life is an Advent Season”, included in the music program:
“The world is not as just; not as loving; not as whole as we know it
can & should be. But the coming of Christ and His presence among us –
as one of us – gives us reason to live in hope; that light will shatter the
darkness; that we can be liberated from our fears and prejudices; that we
are never alone or abandoned. May this Advent season be a time for
bringing hope, transformation & fulfillment into the Advent of our lives.”

The Advent & Christmas seasons are important times for Christians
around the world. So many emotions come into play this time of year
ranging from joy, hope, promise, contentment to fear, reluctance,
sadness & loneliness. As true servants, like Christ, we are to reach out
to all of our brothers & sisters especially those in need.
A couple of weeks ago, in his weekly sermon, Father Tony
Cutcher, once again, moved me with his words. In it, he identified the
outcomes associated with loneliness. He further encouraged the
importance of remembering and visiting those who are in nursing homes
where loneliness can occur. We can never underestimate the
importance of a brief visit to individuals who live in long-term care
ministries. Furthermore, a random act of kindness like this does not
require a lot of time or resources. I, too, encourage these visits as a
meaningful way to serve those who are lonely and as a most suitable
preparation activity during this special season. I’m confident the joys that
you spread will come back many-fold!!!
In community news of importance, we are pleased & anxious to
welcome Jodi Lacy as our new Director of Health Care Services
beginning December 5 th . Jodi brings impressive long-term care
credentials & experience to this position including assistant director of
nursing; long-term care charge nurse & unit manager and home health
nurse to mention a few. Please join me & the Otterbein St. Marys’
residents, partners, family members & Board in welcoming this talented
individual to our community.
Finally, this past Sunday, I had the pleasure to sing with our church
choir at the “Sounds of the Season” concert at St. Paul’s United Church
of Christ.

A trip to the Allen County Museum in Lima for their
Christmas Tree Festival. There will also be a stop at the
McDonald House for an old fashioned Christmas
Celebration. Pick up will begin at 1 pm.
Annual Tree of Hope Dedication at 12:45 pm. To close
the program their will be a performance from the
Memorial High School Show Choir Glitter and Gold.
An evening of sparkling carols and live dancing at the
ONU Holiday Spectacular, at the Lima Civic Center. Bus
pick up will begin at 5:45 pm.
Come meet your new neighbors and friends! Quarterly
Welcome Reception at 2pm in the Meyer Community
Room, followed by refreshments.
Annual OSM resident Christmas Party. Hors d’ oeuvres
will being at 5pm with dinner at 5:45 pm. This years
entertainment will be provided by Joseph Singer.
Holiday Open House in the campus center dining room.
Enjoy snacks, entertainment , crafts and campus tours
from 2-4 pm.
Last minute shopping at The Lima Mall. Pick up will
begin at 1 pm.
Annual performance of “The Messiah” at St. Paul’s
Methodist Church in Celina. Pick up will begin at
6:30 pm. Enjoy holiday displays on the drive home!
Annual resident Christmas program at 1:15 pm in the
Meyer Community Room. Enjoy some special moments,
songs and stories.
“A Homestead Holiday to Grandmother’s House,” at
Bearcreek Farms and dinner at the Calico Café in
Coldwater. Pick up will begin at 12:30 pm.
A chance for last minute shopping! Weekly shopping trip
to Aldi’s and Wal-Mart in Celina. Pick up will be at 2 pm.
Christmas Eve service held in the Meyer Community
Room at 4pm.
Merry Christmas! There will be Christmas church service
in the Meyer Community Room at 11 am.
An early welcome to 2012 with a dinner trip to Fireside
Pub in New Bremen. Pick up will be at 4:30 pm.
The holidays are upon us and although decorating
resident rooms make them festive and enjoyable, there are
guidelines set by the Ohio Department of Health that we as
health care providers must follow. We ask that you refrain from using
extension cords or power strips in our health care areas for any reason.
These items are NOT permitted. Maintenance has added extra outlets to
rooms in an effort to eliminate the need for alternate power sources. We
appreciate your cooperation in making this a safe environment for all.
Residents were joined by
the staff of, “A Bit of Nature
Floral Designs” for a fall
crafting activity. St. Marys
store owner, Paige
Canfield, joined residents as
they created their very own
fall floral arrangement. The
arrangements included a
pumpkin and an array of fall
flowers. The residents were
able to take them home and
enjoy them throughout the
holidays!
Otterbein St. Marys welcomes
Laura Wendel! Laura moved to
Otterbein from Ft. Recovery,
Ohio. Laura resides in a Swan
Apartment.
Otterbein St. Marys welcomes
Gene & Marilyn Ruhlen! The
Ruhlens moved to Otterbein from
Mendon, Ohio. They reside in a
patio home on Bobwhite Lane.
Grate Challenge Concludes!
We are so “Grate-ful” for Otterbein St. Marys resident, Eldon Grate, who
graciously offered a dollar for dollar match up to $75,000 to those who would
join him and donate toward the Life Enrichment Center Campaign. As you
may recall October 31st was the deadline to donate and I have the grand
total! Drumroll, please! Those participating in the Grate Challenge donated a
total of $79,735.00! That means, with Eldon’s gift of $75,000 a grand total of
$154,735.00 goes toward the Life Enrichment Center
Campaign! For this challenge, a total of 41 gifts were given. Of these, 30
gifts totaled $1,000 or more, so these names will be on a plaque for the
Grate Challenge when the facility is completed. Of the 41 total gifts, 26 were
resident gifts, 4 were Partners and 11 were family members. We are so
grateful for all who participated. Through the continued, consistent
generosity of so many, our total for the LEC Campaign is currently
$1,570,046.26, meaning just less than $30,000 still needs to be raised to
fully fund our Life Enrichment Center Campaign! Praise God!
