Toy Libraries can offer meeting places where parents and child carers are able to: • Borrow good quality toys without large financial outlay. • Be supported in learning about toys and play, and how children learn through play. • Share information, play ideas and good practice. • Find out about different ways of developing positive relationships between themselves and their children. • Find out about childcare choices. • Undertake voluntary work before starting or returning to work. • Learn new skills. • Develop confidence and self esteem. • Receive information, advice and support. • Learn about careers in childcare and other training or work opportunities. • Meet other parents in their community. • Access other services (health, education, etc). Toy Libraries can help strategic planners to: • Ensure that new childcare places can be created by making resources and equipment, particularly to those sectors of the childcare industry where potential providers find difficulty in meeting the cost. The Government’s Childcare Review showed that this is a significant barrier for Childminders and out of school clubs. • Sustain childcare places across all settings and drive up quality by ensuring childcare providers have access to good quality resources to meet the individual needs of all children. When linking with an appropriate and diverse training programme practitioners are able to deploy resources more effectively. • Positively encourage and promote inclusion. • Engage disadvantaged families and minority groups in community services. • Support asylum-seeking and refugee families, as well as homeless families and those in temporary accommodation. • Support the delivery of teenage pregnancy strategies by providing services for this group. • Support women and children in refuges escaping domestic violence. • Reduce the load on, and the need for, specialist services for some families by providing supportive networks and services. • Consult and engage with parents and child carers. • Assess needs and identify possible new service developments for individuals and communities. • Make available advice on benefits, e.g. on Child Tax credit, local issues and address regenerations issues.
