station. Owner and St. James resident,
Frank DeRosa, with over
25 years experience in the auto
industry, has earned the respect
and loyalty of his customers, by
offering honest and expert repair
and maintenance on both foreign
and domestic automobiles,
trucks and vans. Formally known
in the community as Parkville
Volvo, Frank purchased the business
seven years ago and moved
it to it’s current location on Lake
Avenue. A year ago, Frank added
Getty Gasoline to the business,
partnering with his father-in-law
Mike Wian, a retired electrician
and St. James resident for the
past 36 years.
In addition to Frank and Mike,
the Parkville team also includes
Master Mechanic Will, who has
worked with Frank for over nine
years and Mohamed or “Mo” as
he is affectionately known to all
who fill their tanks at Parkville
Getty. “Mo” is at the helm of the
pumps at all times, rain, snow, or
sleet. Parkville Motor Sports/
Getty is one of the few service
stations in our area that still has
a filling attendant on hand during
operating hours, a feature
that is very much appreciated by
all of their clients.
Expert repair work includes,
air conditioning repairs,
brake/abs, electrical components,
alignments, engine, transmission
and suspension repairs.
Computer diagnostics and comprehensive
emission system
cleaning service is also available
– helping your car to maintain

Country Fair
and Auction on
Saturday, September
19,
Gabriella Sehne, daughter of
Michael and Maria Sehne of St.
James, will hold a “HElpIng to
SavE lIvES” Blood Drive in conjunction
with Long Island Blood
Services, on Wednesday, August
26, 2009 from 2-7:30 p.m. at the
Smithtown High School West-
Gym.
Gabriella, 17 years old, will be
a senior at Smithtown High
School East in the fall and is asking
for your donation of blood to
help save lives. “Our community
hospitals need your help,” states
Gabriella, “Please share this lifesaving
gift, your donation of blood
may help to save up to three lives.
If you are between 16 and 75
years old (16 year olds must have
parental permission. Age 76 and
over need doctor’s note), eat well
(low fat) and iron rich foods, drink
fluids and weigh at least 110
pounds – you are eligible to donate
blood. Note: No tattoos for
the past 12 months. Be sure to
bring ID with signature or photo.

for a Cause, Feed a Family, Food Drive. In response to
the Smithtown Food Pantry’s recent plea for food donations,
Quaint and Classy of St. James is proudly sponsoring
a month-long food drive for the pantry’s benefit.
The shop also intends to raise awareness of the ongoing
problem of food shortages our nation’s food pantries
face during these difficult economic times.
For the entire month of September, the shop is extending
an invitation to Shop for a Cause, Feed a Family.
Simply bring in a bag of non-perishable food items

9th Annual Harbor Day Festival Set for September 12

of the Harbor.
After the rainout last year, we’re
hoping and praying for good
weather for this year’s Harbor
Day, which will be on Saturday,
September 12, 2009 at Long
Beach in Smithtown. As in past
years, Harbor Day is hosted by the
Head-of-the Harbor/ Nissequogue
Joint Coastal Commission. The
festival is an opportunity for people
of all ages to learn more about
the ecology and history of Stony
Brook Harbor and to participate
in a canoe and kayak tour of the
Harbor, and to enjoy this very special
place.
The festivities start at 9 a.m. at
the first boat ramp at Smithtown’s
Long Beach. The mayors of the
two villages, Nat Tartamella and
Richard Smith will welcome
everyone and talk a little bit about
the ecology of the Harbor. In addition,
Smithtown Supervisor,
Patrick Vecchio, and State Assemblyman
Michael Fitzpatrick will
say a few words about their concerns
for our precious natural resources.
Following these greetings, Brad
Harris, President of the Smithtown
Historical Society, will be speaking
about the Nesaquake Indians,
Smithtown’s original inhabitants,
what we know about these indigenous
Americans and how
they responded to contact with
Europeans.
The Nesaquake Indians were a
small clan of Algonquin-speaking
Indians who made their home
along the banks of the Nissequogue
River and around the
banks of St. James Harbor. Never
a very large clan, the Nesaquakes
probably had less than 500 members;
they were a friendly peaceful
people. The story of how these
peaceful Indians lived upon the
bounty of the land and sea and
what happened to them is the
substance of Mr. Harris’ remarks.
It is a sad story of cultural absorption
and annihilation that needs to
be told.

shoe crabs, oysters, clams, fiddler

Then a flotilla of canoes and
kayaks will set off on a tour of
Stony Brook Harbor, stopping at
Cordwood Beach for a brief rest
and rehydration. Returning from
the tour, participants may enjoy
an old-fashioned lunch consisting
of hot dogs, soda, ices, cotton
candy, hot pretzels, and churros,
each costing only 99¢. In addition,
there will be tote-bags, toy
give-aways and favors.
People who don’t have their
own canoe or kayak but want to
join the flotilla can arrange to rent
them from Nissequogue Canoes
by calling 979-8244 and mention
Harbor Day. Everyone in the
flotilla, children and adults, must
wear life jackets, and it is highly

weeks away. In early October, the
doors will open to the Maher family’s
new venture, St. James Funeral
Home South Chapel, a
state-of-the art funeral home built
from the ground up – a rarity on
Long Island .
“Most funeral homes are refurbished
from previous buildings,”
explains Kenneth Maher Sr., who,
with his wife and their children,
has run the original St. James Funeral
Home for more than 30
years. “It’s the first time in this millennium
that Long Island has seen
a funeral home that is brand new,
from the “ground up”, rather than
a redo of another space.”
The Mahers, fixtures in this
beautiful North Shore community,
have listened closely to their treasured
family and friends for three
decades, and have incorporated
their wishes, along with the family’s
own ideas, into this new
space, which will be the largest
funeral home in all of Suffolk
County.
“Starting from scratch has enabled
us to combine the best in
traditional values with many advanced
features available in funeral
service today,” says Betty
Maher, Ken’s wife of 37 years.
“We will have flat-screen TVs in
all our chapels, which will enable
the families whom we serve the
option of personalized DVD presentations
during their loved one’s
visiting times and closed circuit
presentations throughout our
building.
The new building will feature
different chapels of varying sizes.
This unique architectural design
will allow for ultimate comfort
whether a family requests a
smaller, more intimate space or a
more open area. “Each chapel is
also designed individually, while
incorporating the beloved, historic
furniture of many of Long Island’s
earlier families,” says Ken
Sr. “Our lovely Long Island is a
treasure-trove of history; we
wanted to showcase a respect for
this history by featuring these oneof-a-kind
pieces throughout our
facility. The furniture that was
once enjoyed by Long Island families
will be available to be appreciated
once again. Notwithstanding
is the fact that saving so
many of these significant pieces
from Long Island’s landfills, is another
way that we feel good about
going green, as we have furnished
our funeral home with these significant
historic furnishings.
Through the use of these furniture
pieces, we save forests and fuel
while helping to recycle and preserve
our Long Island heritage!”
Each chapel will also have its
own courtyard, making this the
only such facility of its kind in
New York. “Our families have told
us over the years that having a private,
outdoor space for mourners
to gather is important to them; we
made sure to make that happen,”
says Ken Jr.
Betty and Kerry are especially
excited about the building’s Children’s
Room. “As a former
teacher, Mom is thrilled to design
this space with input from many
local teachers and administrators
especially for the children of our
community,” says Kerry. “We’re
also working with artists from a

wonderful non-profit organization
called Splashes of Hope, which
designs hand-painted murals for
children’s hospitals and other
medical settings. Their work is so
beautiful; we asked them to create
murals that will reflect the beauty
of our area, and that will bring a
sense of serenity for all who see
them.” The room will also include
educational toys and books to
keep the youngest children occupied,
Betty adds.
Additionally, artists’ and students’
own artwork will be featured
in the Community Gallery
area, in honor of all the families
the Mahers have been privileged
to serve. “We raised our family in
St. James, and we all continue to
live in this wonderful community
to this day,” says Betty. “Many of
the children I taught are now
grown up, raising families of their
own here, so our connections run
very deep.”
Kerry will continue the tradition
she started at the original location
of the St. James Funeral Home on
Route 25A: a personalized, handmade
Memory Book that allows
loved ones to find accurate names
and dates of their family members.
“It’s another form of memory
that each family can keep with
them always,” she says. “It’s so

endeavors. We are quite pleased

history.”
Ken Jr. is quick to sing the
praises of the new building’s architect,
Marc Mancini. “His design
is serene, peaceful and
modern all at the same time,” says
Ken, “Our goal is, as always, to
combine the traditions that are so
important to people while at the
same time creating a facility that
offers every modern convenience;
wherever you turn, a Maher will
be there to help.”
Mancini’s designs also took into
account another of the family’s
goals: To create a green building
that utilizes the most energy-efficient,
environmentally friendly
materials. “We’re committed to
preserving not only our community’s
environment, but that of our
entire planet,” says Ken Sr. “We
incorporated features such as ecofriendly
windows with low-e
glass; safe insulation that saves
energy; and low and non-VOC
paints and carpeting, so we’re preventing
the release of unhealthy
emissions into the air.”
The new building is the culmination
of more than two years of
planning for Ken, Betty, and their
children Kerry and Ken Jr. Still, the
joy of preparing for the opening is
bittersweet for the Mahers, since
their eldest daughter, Aelysche, is
not here to be part of the exciting
event. Aelysche, a licensed NYS
Elementary Teacher and licensed
NYS Funeral Director died in October
2007 at the age of 31 years.
“My sister was involved from
day one in the planning and
dreaming of this new building,”
says Kerry, a board member of the
Nassau-Suffolk Funeral Directors
Association, as well as a board
member of the St. James Chamber
of Commerce. “When we poured
the foundation for the site, we included
family photos, a shamrock
to honor our heritage, an American
Flag pin for our beloved
Country and all of our handprints,
including a special set for
Aelysche. We know her spirit is
with us every step of the way.”
The Mahers are now in the
planning stages for hosting a
Community Welcome Day at their
new building. News concerning
this event will be published in the
near future. All are welcome and

Cancer Research Fund Celebrity
Golf Outing was held on July 20,
2009 at Nissequogue Golf Club
raising over $150,000 to help
find a cure.
“together We Will Find a
Cure” is the message of Carol
Baldwin and her family. The
Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer
Research Fund is committed to
battling breast cancer by supporting
both new and established
researchers. To date, the
Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer
Research Fund has awarded
more than 57 research grants totalling
in excess of $3 million to
medical research.
Movie and TV stars Alec and
William Baldwin were in attendance,
supporting this cause,
along with numerous celebrities
from the entertainment, news
and sports fields. Each foursome
played with a celebrity on the
beautiful and challenging Nissequogue
golf course followed by
a festive dinner and auction.
CBS’s own evening sports reporter,

the year in Spiritual Services.

A revered leader within her religious
community, Rabbi Rhonda
Beth Goodman Nebel now celebrates
the 20th anniversary of her
induction into a life of spiritual
service. Counseling people of all
ages and directing spiritual ceremonies,
Rabbi Nebel has demonstrated
lifelong commitment to
others. Additionally, her expertise
on Judaism is noteworthy – Rabbi
Nebel served as a consultant for
“Acts of Faith,” by Erich Segal.
Rabbi Nebel was educated at
The Jewish Theological Seminary,
where she earned a master’s degree
in ordination in 1990. She
also holds a bachelor’s degree
summa cum laude with distinction
in religion and psychology
from Boston University, earned in
1981. She is extremely active
within her community, having
served as vice president of the
Suffolk Council of Jewish Organizations
and holding memberships
with the Suffolk Board of Rabbis,
Long Island Board of Rabbis and
Rabbinical Assembly of Nassau
and Suffolk Counties. She also
dedicates her time to acting as a
troop leader for her local chapter
of the Girl Scouts of the United

Latino artistic expression that reflect
the diversity of the Latino
community in the United States.
The gallery is located at 660

The exhibit includes 21 artists
who draw their inspiration from a
broad range of themes, from immigration

are represented. The work presents
a snapshot of the rich customs

Hi Nancy,
A bathroom redo is great for
you and for your home’s resale
value, as well. If you are gutting
your room, you may have the
opportunity to change the layout
of your fixtures, but be careful
you don’t incur major plumbing
expenses by doing so. You could,
however, gain more space by
changing a corner tub to a
straight tub. The days of the tile
steps on a diagonal leading up to
the tub are over. They were so
dangerous and wasted valuable
space. Some people rarely use
their tubs. If you’re one of those
and have a tub in another bathroom,
you might consider replacing
the tub entirely with a
terrific large shower with all the
bells and whistles. That might
leave space for “his and “her”
separate vanities, bench seating
or even a fireplace (electric) with
a T.V. over it. There’s no end to
what folks might like to do to
their bathrooms.
In addition, there are so many
great sinks made of metals or
glass, both under mount and vessel
(sits on top of the vanity)
which create effects from classical
to deco to contemporary.
Check out magazines to find
your style and then head to a
local dealer to pinpoint the product
and price. In addition, there
are furniture stores that offer
ready-made vanities with sinks
and faucets included. Check

shadows on the face. To add
a bit of mood or romance to the
room, consider adding a chandelier
or cove lighting connected to
a dimmer. These options provide
the ideal light level for a nice relaxing
bath or shower.”

It is just about September which
makes me think autumn, but there
is still planting you can do. Put in
broccoli, cabbage and collards.
Plant seeds of arugula, spinach,
radishes and leaf lettuce. With the
cooler weather coming, put in
some snow or sugar snap peas.
Also, sow a pot of parsley seeds to
bring inside.
Get a head start and sow seeds
of calendula, cleome, cosmos
nicotiana, nigella, poppies and
snapdragons for spring blooms.
Start shopping for spring-flowering
bulbs. It is nice if you can
buy enough so you can plant
them in drifts, it really gives you
maximum color impact. A single
row is just not as dynamic.
Fall is a good time for planting
many perennials. The plant’s
growth is rapid because the plant

is not using it’s energy producing
new top growth. The latest date to
plant is around the middle of the
month. Sooner is better though.
Make sure to keep your plants
consistently watered. Later on add
mulch only after the ground
freezes.
A popular plant purchase right
now are chrysanthemums. You
can plant them in the ground to
fill in where annuals have finished
doing their thing, or put them in
containers to decorate your front
steps or back patio for the season.
Next month add some gourds and
pumpkins for added color. Mums
like full sun and well-drained soil.
If you are planting hardy mums
in the ground, they will need to
be in some quick-draining soil.
Before planting, mix a two to four
inch layer of peat moss or compost
into the soil. To help them
survive the winter, mulch with 4-
6 inches of light mulch like straw
or pine needles. Put the mulch
around the plant once temperatures
are regularly below freezing.
Remove in early spring.
Hopefully you have an abundance
of vegetables – you can use
these to decorate your dinner
table or Labor Day party table. Instead
of flowers, arrange an array

of vegetables in a big basket or
bowl. When the party is over, turn
that decoration into a great gazpacho
or ratatouille.
Don’t want to let go of summer
just yet? You can stretch it out by
bringing in not-too-large flowering
or foliage annuals. Just pot
them up before the frost and you
will have weeks to months of
color. Small and young plants
work best, although mature
plants, cut back by a third or so
often do well. Some that do well
are coleus, geraniums, impatiens,
wax begonias, lantana, and petunias.
They will benefit from daily
misting and little to no fertilizer.
You can take cuttings of your favorites
too.
Looking for a late summer crafts
for the children? Collect items
from nature such as dried flowers,
mapleseed pods, seeds, acorn
caps, grasses, seed heads, thin
thems and twigs. Set kids loose on
a walk or in the yard to find different
items. Use the items, glued to
cardboard or thin boards, to create
a welcome sign or other message;
or the child’s name, to hang
on the front door or bedroom
door. Set up a craft table outside
with the collected materials, glue
bottles, autumn-colored craft or
construction paper and string or
ribbon.
Think about luring birds to your
yard this winter. They help to control
insects, are entertaining to
watch and provide a great nature
lesson for the children – and that
is always good. It is a nice simple
responsibility for children to help
fill up the feeder and birdbath.
You can, of course, buy all sorts of
feeders and birdbaths, but you
can also recycle so many items
from around the house. The birds
won’t care. Large plastic bottles
can be turned into feeders, as can
hanging pots. Pot saucers and
garbage can lids can turn into
nice baths. Just look around. Help
the children keep a record of what
types of birds they see, what they
eat, how they fly, and what they
sound like. Come spring they will
stick around and raise a family.

Are Your Records Organized For an Emergency?

If you were incapacitated,
would anyone be able to find your
important records and take care of
your family’s financial or business
matters? Having important papers
organized and accessible in advance
can be very important in an
emergency or crisis situation.
Consider the following for organizing
your important records.
Location. Options for storage
might include a home safe, firesecurity
box or off-site location
such as a safety deposit box. The
storage container should be securable
and fire resistant. Shoe boxes
or cardboard boxes in the closet
or under the bed are not appropriate.
Who knows? Does someone in
addition to your spouse know
where these papers are kept? Consider
making a list of such papers
and records, and on the list state
where these documents can be
found. Then advise a trusted third
party – an attorney, CPA, relative,
or family friend – where this list is
kept.
The general idea is that someone
not living in your residence
knows about this list and how to
access it. This decision requires a
certain comfort level, and you
alone are able to make that determination.

Which papers? Regardless of
who knows what, organized
records are always a plus. The following
items might be part of your
“important documents” list:
safety deposit box key, life insurance
policies, deeds, contracts,
leases, titles, mortgage(s), loan
notes, banking, savings, investment
and retirement account(s)
records, will, burial arrangements
all other insurance policies
(health, auto, home, etc.), birth
certificates.
Beyond however you decide to
store your personal records, and
whatever you decide to include,
one fact is clear. If important legal,
business and personal documents
are organized and accessible, the
handling of a crisis situation is
made much easier.

More and more frequently we
hear reports of nightmarish accounts
of identity theft. I have met
two individuals in the past year
who were victims, and whose
ability to get a good mortgage rate
was affected. Unfortunately, when
identity theft occurs, the responsibility
to clear one’s name falls on
the victim. Most people mistakenly
think that it won’t happen to
them, but statistics prove that it
very well may. By being cautious
and careful with your personal
data, you can prevent a costly situation
that could both ruin your
credit and cause major headaches
for years to come.
Here are a few do’s and don’ts
to guide you through.
MORTGAGE MATTERS:
Avoiding Identity Theft
ALWAYS:
• Monitor your credit card and
checking account statements
as often as possible to watch
out for any unfamiliar transactions.
Immediately report any
unauthorized activity to your
credit card company or bank.
• Make sure you receive all your
credit and banking statements
each month. A missing statement
can mean someone took
it from your mailbox or redirected
it to another address,
giving them access to your account
information.
• Shred all documents that contain
your personal information
before throwing them out.
Also, shred any “pre-approved”
credit card offers you
receive by mail to prevent
someone from applying for
credit in your name.
• Change your online banking,
email and other internet account
passwords often. Pick
less obvious passwords that
contain a combination of numbers
and letters, as these are
more difficult for a potential
identity thief to decipher.
NEVER:
• Keep your social security card
in your wallet. If a thief were
to get hold of that information,
along with your name and address
from your driver’s license,
your missing cash and
charge cards would be the
least of your concerns. The
best place for your social security
card is at home, in a safe
place with other important
documents.
• Leave bill payments in your
home mailbox for your mail
carrier to pick up. A thief could
easily grab the envelope, retrieve
your information, and
have a shopping spree with
your account numbers. Drop
your mail in a Postal Service
mailbox instead.
• Give out personal information
unless absolutely necessary,
and be sure you know who
you are speaking to when you
do it. Beware of anyone
claiming to be from your bank,
credit card company, internet
service provider, email carrier,
etc. who asks for your passwords
or PIN codes by phone
or email. Most companies will
never request that information
from their customers.
What to do if identity theft
happens to you:
1. Notify the three major credit
reporting bureaus to alert
them to the potential fraud.
2. Immediately close any credit
card accounts that have been
opened without your authorization.
Inform these companies
that fraud has been
committed.

We all find it hard to plan for
the long term, yet women face
some unique challenges when it
comes to planning for the future.
Everyone needs to address the
reality of living longer – and
spending more years in retirement
– but females tend to live
even longer than their male

The general rule is that if a
family cannot pay for long-term
nursing home care and they own
a home, Medicaid will pay for
nursing home care and it will put
a lien on the family home to be
paid upon the sale of the home
or upon the death of the community
spouse, whichever shall
occur first. However, there are
exceptions to that rule. Medicaid
will not obtain a lien on the family
home in the following circumstances:
(a) a spouse entering a nursing
home (the “nursing home patient”)
transfers his or her
share of the home to the community
spouse;
(b) the nursing home patient
transfers the home to his or
her disabled or blind child of

The Family Home and Medicaid
any age;
(c) the nursing home patient
transfers the home to an adult
caregiver child who has lived
in the home for at least two
(2) years prior to the parent’s
admission to a nursing home;
and
(d) the nursing home patient
transfers the home to a
brother or sister who has
resided in the home and has
had a stake in the home at
least one (1) year before the
nursing home patient is admitted
to the nursing home.
The foregoing circumstances
are fairly limited. However, for
those persons who do not meet
the foregoing circumstances,
there is some help. Immediately
before entering a nursing home a
nursing home patient can protect
approximately one-half (1/2) of
his or her assets by gifting 50%
of his or her assets to family
members and by loaning the
other 50% of his or her assets to
family members. The money
loaned will be paid back to the
nursing home patient in monthly

The Boy’s Rising Juniors team of
the Long Island Express, Long Island’s
elite lacrosse travel club,
defeated the Tri-State Black Rising
Seniors to capture the 2009
Under 19AA Elite division championship
at the 2009 Tri-State National
Summer Lacrosse Festival in
Princeton, NJ. The Tri-State National
Summer Lacrosse Festival is
a premier all-star 3-day event featuring
hundreds of boys and girls
teams competing in various age
brackets from 10 through 18. The
competition was held July 10-12
and the under 19AA Elite division
is the most competitive level in
the tournament.
This victory marks the first time
a U-16 team has won the U-19
title in Tri-State History. The Long
Island Express Rising Juniors,
comprised of 23 of Long Island’s
most talented players, competed
in the tournaments’ top bracket
against 21 other elite teams from
all over the country. The Rising
Juniors defeated the Fighting
Clams from the Boston area 6-5 in
the semi-finals and then went on

Hunger Tennis Tournament
which will take place between
August 29 and November 8,
2009. The tournament is open to
all players. Divisions are set up
according to ability levels and
geographic locations. Players
schedule their own matches at
mutually convenient times and
sites. Players from more than 50
Long Island communities are expected
to take part.
The purpose of the tennis tournament
is to provide an enjoyable
recreational activity, while
helping those in desperate need.
All entry fees and donations are
forwarded to Catholic Relief
Services to assist them in their efforts
to feed hungry children
throughout the world. Assistance
is provided in 100 countries

Maintaining mobility is critical in order
to live free from pain and disability.
Maintaining good mobility is not difficult,
but it does not happen on its own.
Imagine waking up one morning with
a frozen shoulder where you couldn’t
move your upper arm more than a few
inches in any direction. how much
would that impact your ability to do your
job? how much would that affect your
ability to drive your car or even to dress
yourself? how much would that affect
your ability to concentrate on anything
other than your shoulder? obviously, if
your shoulder did not move correctly, it
would have a dramatic impact on your
life. Well, the same is true with movement
in every part of your body. If things
aren’t moving the way they are supposed
to move, it will have a negative
impact on your ability to function at
work, take care of the demands of
everyday life, and even your ability to
concentrate.
Many patients with severe low back
pain report that their pain came on suddenly
when they did something as simple
as bend down to pet their cat, put on
their socks, or pick up the newspaper.
Just about everyone would agree that a
person’s body should be able to handle
such simple movements. so what has
happened?
In every one of these cases, the joints

Importance of maintaining mobility

When the joints in one area of the body
do not move the way they should, other
areas of the body are forced to move
more in order to compensate. This creates
a significant stress on those areas
that have to pick up the slack, and it
soon leads to pain and inflammation. At
the same time, the areas that don’t have
normal movement will slowly worsen as
the muscles continue to tighten, the
joints stick together, and the ligaments
and tendons shorten. This leaves the
body in a very unstable condition; if left
unchecked, this process will continue
until the body can hardly move at all.
That is how a person comes to suffer
flare-ups of pain at the slightest provocation.
Most of us have seen people who
have lost most of their normal mobility:
they look like bodies that have been
starched stiff whenever they try to move
around. This is especially prevalent
among the elderly. Contrary to popular

Maintaining good mobility is not difficult,
but it does not happen on its own. Just
as in developing a good posture, it is
necessary that you perform specific exercises

that all of the joints in your body are

stretching can help achieve a great deal

Housing Recovery Underway?
e government’s toxic asset Recovery Program
seems to be working if we are to believe the reports
of a housing recovery in the papers. existing housing
inventories have been reduced to an 8-month
inventory down from a 12-month recorded in mid
2008. is is feeding into a broader economic recovery;
and some pundits are predicting if the
trend continues that it should have us out of recession
later this year.
Not all real estate markets will be recovering as
quickly as others: Florida and Nevada still are reporting
challenging economic dynamics without an
end in view for the housing markets. It is hard to
say how unemployment will factor into the mix –
although the numbers have been slowing down
lately.
Recently I spoke with the Chief Smithtown
Building official. according to him – in 2006 there
were 139 home permits issued; in 2007, 39; and in
2008, 21. to date in 2009 we have 24 permits –
this doesn’t mean it’s a recovery but it does say we
have some positive movement here in Smithtown.
Houses are still selling – there are always those
who must sell because of family growth, a job related
transfer or whatever LIFe plans for us... and
must move on.
I, for one, do not profess to have all the answers
as far as the recovery in the housing market... I can
only say what has happened after most economic
recessions in the past... ere is a positive housing
market when we start a recovery if only for a period
of time at first. If you are in a position that you
must or want to sell and move on, it would be wise
at this time to get your home into the market as
soon as possible and catch the wave.

sleep disorders, however, this

people. It is estimated that one out

Inability to Sleep May Be a Result of a Back Problem
quality sleep and, in many cases,
it is a result of structural health
problems.
There are many underlying
causes including abnormal motion
of joints in the neck and
back. Nerve receptors which are
stimulated with normal joint
movement affect the state of other
nerves in the brain and spinal
cord to allow normal sleep. If
there is a problem with normal
movement at joints, these receptors
cannot be stimulated and the
quality of sleep and other functions
may be impaired.
The consequences of sleep

served in WWII with the Merchant Marines as a radio

on July 31, 2009 at the age of 52. He was the proprietor

Anthony Joseph Routi, of St. James, passed away on
May 19, 2009 at the age of 72. He was a Veteran of
the Air Force and a proud former employee of Grumman
having had the opportunity to work on several
Lunar Excursion Modules. He is survived by his loving
family Tara (Bill), Lisa (Vinny), Vincent and Michele.

the late Gertrude Moretto. He will also be missed by
