Division<br />
MARINE POLICE<br />
The Mar<strong>in</strong>e Police Division is responsible for public safety on the state’s<br />
waterways and registration <strong>of</strong> pleasure vessels. The <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> the division<br />
have full police powers and are an <strong>in</strong>tegral part <strong>of</strong> the state’s law enforcement<br />
community. Officers patrol their assigned area to prevent accidents, enforce<br />
boat<strong>in</strong>g laws, and assist the boat<strong>in</strong>g public. Rout<strong>in</strong>e duties <strong>in</strong>clude enforcement<br />
<strong>of</strong> boat<strong>in</strong>g laws <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>of</strong> boat<strong>in</strong>g accidents and drown<strong>in</strong>g, drug<br />
<strong>in</strong>terdiction work, search and rescue, preparation <strong>of</strong> court cases and testimony,<br />
and conduct<strong>in</strong>g boat<strong>in</strong>g safety education programs. The division ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s<br />
year-round patrol <strong>of</strong> the waterways, and expects and encourages <strong>of</strong>ficers to<br />
work cooperatively with other law enforcement agencies.<br />
Support staff <strong>in</strong>cludes mar<strong>in</strong>e mechanics who ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the division’s patrol<br />
boats, and adm<strong>in</strong>istrative support assistants and account clerks who process<br />
and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> boater registration, boat operator certification, and educational<br />
materials.<br />
Qualifications for becom<strong>in</strong>g a Mar<strong>in</strong>e Police Officer <strong>in</strong>clude the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
• Graduation from high school or GED<br />
• One year <strong>of</strong> work experience <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g contact with the public<br />
• Age 21 or older<br />
• Possession <strong>of</strong> a valid <strong>Alabama</strong> driver’s license<br />
• Possession <strong>of</strong> a valid vessel operator’s license<br />
• No conviction for law violation <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g force, violence,<br />
or moral turpitude<br />
• Meet swimm<strong>in</strong>g requirements<br />
• Certified to be <strong>in</strong> good physical condition<br />
• Qualify for certification by the Peace Officers Standards<br />
and Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Commission<br />
