Minutes: The May 2007 minutes were distributed. 

Minor changes to be made to minutes have been requested; changes will be made and sent out. 

Motion to approve the minutes as submitted with updates requested. Summers/ Baker

News: 

Report from Tim Gordon about the National Race was successful in spite of the inclement weather. The 

challenges were handled properly and everything was completed without a hitch. Tim would like for a list 

of names of those that worked the Specialty Race. Mary Jane Berchak would also like this information. 

Old Business: 

No old business. 

OFFICER REPORTS: 

Observers’ Stand: Mary Jane Berchak reported the deadline for June’s magazine is this weekend. She 

is still waiting for additional write ups about socializers, and Regional Executives report. She has also 

requested that if anyone has photographs available to please submit those as well. Mary Jane has 

received race pictures from a photographer from an other region; these photographs are of races that 

have occurred this season and include OVR drivers. The June issues will be out by the end of this month. 

Competition Licensing Dave Brown reported that a novice permit request was made of him this past 

weekend; due to time constraints though it was not possible to meet this request. As a region we may 

want to consider if we should order one for the region for next year. 

National Race: Jude Summers reported overall the race was a success. Workers were in abundance, 

many thanks to Ronda, Gloria and Duane! Congratulations to all stewards for putting on a great race. 

Participation included 207 National Drivers and 40 Regional Drivers. 

The party was successful and Doug Ruth also ensured timing was upheld within contracted terms, no 

overage charges were incurred from the track. 

Pro Race: Contracts have been completed and received. The only major change is that there is a reduction 

in the number of timing and scoring workers from 12 to 8. 

Treasurer’s Report: Phil Alspach distributed and explained the Treasurer’s Report (May), checking and 

savings registers. A copy for the Observers Stand was submitted.

Phil mentioned his computer which he uses to maintain treasures files has recently crashed; previously 

it had been discussed and approved that he can replace it for $750.00. The information from old 

machine will be transferred to new computer. 

Solo: Andy Bell reported the solo computer has had errors begin to pop up; Mike Smith was commissioned 

to take a look at the machine, the issue is resolvable the estimate is $90.00 and Mike will take 

care of making the repairs. 


National Trails Raceway events have been successful; still working on resolving grid issues. 

The events at Cooper have been successful; $135 was collected during an event where fun runs were 

run. 

NAPA hats were donated by Auto Body Specialists (Neva Hoover). 

Evo School was held this past weekend, attendance was low but this may have been due to holiday 

weekend and many other races going on in the area. Points even four was held at OSU on Sunday. 

Small issues which have come up during the course of the first few events have been resolved or are 

pending resolutions, chiefs rate on DLB have now been implemented. Access to Paypal is still pending for 

Andy, Craig and Andy will work to resolve this do that reconciliation is not delayed. 

Membership: Sue was not present however Phil reported that he had spoken to Sue. Phil would like to 

suggest not printing the Rosters for this year and waiting until after next falls elections to print (January 

2008). The roster will be available from Sue by e-mail, the website can be updated to reflects that if a 

member would like a copy of the roster they can send their name and member number and then will be 

provided with the roster.

Rally Cross: Orion Fairman was not present, no new updates. 

Website: Discs with race day pictures have been sent to Zsolt. 

Historian: The region is still looking for someone to assume additional historian responsibilities and help 

Rebecca. Rebecca also reported that she is aware of a storage bin with OVR artifacts; she doesn’t have 

access to these items but would be interested in reviewing the contents of the stored items. Tim has 

offered to take inventory and review. 

Information: Race was a success; workers for next weekend are being lined up. 

Special Events: Frank Vessel reported he is continuing to line up hospital visit for June visit. IRL will be 

going to a hospital in Akron as locally hospitals have relationship with Frank and will work through him to 

schedule visits. 

Publicity: Tonya Smith reported that the Worker Day tour at Mid Ohio was successful. Thanks to David 

Wyatt & Mike Smith. There are 5 new workers from Solo who will be volunteering in the future. 

Social: Gloria Sheets reported on behalf of the social chairs; the July 25 th Clippers game is upcoming. 

The information for this Socializer needs to be updated for the Observers’ Stand and the website. 

Regional Race: Sups have been completed and sent for review; still pending to hear back about them. 

NEW BUSINESS: 

Steve Lease was present to bring up the idea of memorializing Doc Mills at the regional race this year. 

Further discussion will be required but there is opportunity to plant a tree with a plaque dedicated to 

Doc, with a possibility of a ceremony to be conducted during the race weekend. 

Transponders have not been available to be sold by OVR for race weekends; there is potential by having 

these available for racers in need to better serve the needs of racers. Matt Downing will look into 

details of cost and availability. After he reports on this a motion can be made. 

I-Card could not be read due to poor antenna this past weekend. It can be purchased for approximately 

$2000.00 An antenna will also need to be purchased. Dave Brown will investigate further and 

report back. 

The sound meter needs to be calibrated. There is a missing piece on the meter that needs to be 

bought; Tim will contact Brian Culbertson about getting these issues resolved. 

The need for specialty chief for emergency services fire and safety has been brought up. Due to the 

dynamic that Mid Ohio acquires the volunteers from area fire stations for this duty we have not been 

aware of them or acknowledged them for their service. 

Rich Nestor is willing to accept this position.

Membership: Sue Rupp has distributed the 2007 roster to all board members and specialty chiefs. It is 

also available via e-mail to existing members from Sue.

Pro Race: There were 51 workers for the first event. 

For the upcoming weekend the workers lined up include:

Per Ronda LEC will have a tent up in the infield where they will be recruiting workers and members for 

LEC regions. 

Solo: Andy reported the PAX class has been introduced at in the solo scoring, the issues with calculating 

has been resolved and is moving forward. 

The GTO event that was held raised $500 for the Stanberry Cup. 12 drivers took part, 3 new drivers 

will join with the OVR on the July 21 st event. This event has lead to discussion for future events between 

Pontiac and OVR. 

Monday there will be a classic car test in collaboration with the Good Guys car show. This is being 

held at National Trails Raceway, there will be a drag race and mini auto-x segment. 

The computer has been fixed by Mike Smith within the agreed upon budget. 

Treasurer’s Report: Phil Alspach distributed and explained the Treasurer’s Report (June), checking and

Regional Race: Phil reported that sanction number has been received; this needs to be published on the 

website along with the entry forms. Phil will send race entry form to Berchaks’ (via e-mail) so the file can 

be converted and Zsolt will publish to the website. 

Entry forms have been mailed via bulk mail. Checkered flags have been ordered, as have trophies. 

Insurance is pending. Race meeting will be scheduled. 

The tree for Doc Mills have been secured but will not be planted in time for the race. There will be a 

memorial service in the infield on Saturday evening. There is also a potential for Doc’s T2 winning race 

car to be used as a pace car for the T2 race and the memorial race; logistics will need to be worked out. 

Special Events: Frank reported that hospital visits were held in June. Race Brian Flint toured the hotel. 

The next weeks visit will be on Wednesday at 6:30PM, Randy Pobst and Chalres Espenlaub have confirmed 

they will attend; a few others are still pending. 

Hats have been continued to be donated. 

Observers’ Stand: Mary Jane Berchak June magazine has been mailed out. 

Mary Jane has gotten e-mails about classifieds being hard to find on the website. Right now they are 

accessed through the OS link on the site; this will be corrected to have a link go directly from the site. 

The results for the regional and restricted race can not be pulled up on the website; Mary Jane will 

reformat and send to Zsolt again. 

Elections: The August issue of the OS will need to include those that are interested in running for office. 

There will also need to be an announcement from the RE to those interested in running for a position 

with more details about the campaigning process. 

Social Chair: Gloria reported registration is open for the 7/25 Clippers Game Socializer. 

August 18 for $10 the Socializer is Figure 8 School Bus Racing at Columbus Motor Speedway. 

Worker Licensing: Ronda reported that workers may need to fill out IRL specific waiver for IRL weekend. 

This can be pulled from LEC website. It is suggested to have it filled out before arriving at registration 

to ensure registration is quick. 

Information: Duane has workers who have volunteered for the weekend and the schedule has been created. 

Publicity: Tonya has no new news. 

Website: Workers page has been updated. 

Rally: No representative present. 

Historian: Not present, Tim reported he is continuing to do inventory of storage area. 

Old Business: 

During Pro weekend Duane ran into I-Card card contact, this contact was provided to Tim Gordon. Tim 

will provide this information to Dave so that Dave can follow up with the contact person. Another update 

is that the antenna has been replaced. Now it is a matter of replacing the transmitted (appx cost $2000). 

The board at this time does not want to buy an I-Card transmitter. 

Sound meter has been delivered to Brian, will be fixed and calibrated by August NEO race. 

New Business: 

Mike Dickerson from SCCA has reported that 90 day membership will be discontinued. A weekend 

only membership can be purchased.

Historian: Rebecca Fast not present. No report. 

Competition Licensing: Dave Brown not present. No report. 

Special Events: Frank Vessel on call at work and unable to attend. Report sent to/presented by Tim. We 

had a successful visit to Children’s Hospital. Speed World Challenge drivers Charles Espendlaub, Charlie 

Putnum, and Randy Pobst attended, along with Diane Putnum, Nancy Shillace, and Kathy Gall. We 

stopped at the activity center first to visit the kids before their bingo game and to drop off toys. Then 

we went room to room, giving away stuffed animals to several patients. SWC driver Jim Osborn and his 

wife Amy Jo were not able to attend due to the paddock parking fiasco at Mid-OH. They were planning 

to attend and provide donations to the hospital. Read Nancy’s article for a more detailed report. I will 

begin working at least one more visit this year, which will be by local drivers. 

I received a donation of hats at one of the Solo events and another at Mid-OH. I may have around 

40 hats at this time. 

Solo: Andy Bell ill and unable to attend. Report sent to/presented by Craig. We did Hot Rod Event at 

National Trails. Thanks to Mike and Tonya Smith, Craig and Cody Wollenslegel and Coby Hartman who 

came out to help. Thanks to John Fergus who came out to drive. The owners were pleased and OVR 

should get some press time in the national magazines. (Probably in November) 

Aug event at NTR went well. Portion of the track was breaking up at the end of the day from where jet 

fuel from the jet-powered dragsters has been spilled onto the surface. We showed it to the owner who 

was grateful we pointed it out and will get the areas repaired before any further damage can be done. 

Ground has been broken for new Clipper’s Stadium. We continue to look for more sites. 

Gov Cup went okay this year. Extreme heat on Saturday, rain on Sunday. Lot had been resealed and was 

slippery in heat on Saturday and wet on Sunday. Site owner not concerned about any damage we might 

do because resurfacing was not done in timely manner earlier in the summer. Thanks to Autobody 

Specialists and Appearance Automotive for a great party Saturday night. 

Congratulations to Randy Hoover, 2007 Governor’s Cup winner. 

Phil commented that he enjoyed the event which was well run in spite of the weather. 

Tim and Phil asked how long it takes for $ to be deposited after Solo events. Discussion about what is 

a reasonable expectation. Also inquiry about how funds come in from DLBracing.com. 

Observers’ Stand: Mary Jane Berchak reported she has some articles for the August issue. Deadline for 

submissions is Aug. 12 th . She will try to have the magazine to the printer in a couple weeks. 

Pro Race: Jude reported plenty of help for IRL – approx. 84 workers. Long day, etc, but everyone who 

worked had a good time. 

Regional Race: Phil reported 31 entries already - at a month out. Insurance, trophies, and everything 

else moving along on schedule. Sound meter has been repaired and recalibrated. Race Meeting for chiefs 

scheduled at Jude’s on Wed. Aug. 29. 

Treasurer’s Report: Phil Alspach distributed and explained the Treasurer’s Report (July), checking and 



Phil asked about credit card problems with Race Registration. Gloria Sheets, Chief Registrar reported that 

the problem was a software glitch and that it has been resolved. Phil reported that he discovered two 

unauthorized charges made against our account in the last 2 weeks. Both were debits to pay utility bills.

Baker/Wollenslegel 


Social: Gloria and Peggy reported that tickets are available for the Aug. 18 th event at Columbus Motor 

Speedway. Tickets are $10.00 and the gates open @ 5 PM. Gloria will try to get tickets to everyone who 

has requested them in advance. 

Schedule for the rest of the year – Sept 26 th Auto Assets Shop Tour, Oct 24 th Nominations, Nov 28 th 

Elections both @ Winking Lizard. 

Worker Licensing: Ronda Knapp not present. No report. 

Membership: Sue Rupp reported updated membership numbers not available. As of mid-July we had 

866 members 182 Family, 11 1 st Gear, 4 Life, 18 Dual, 561 Regular, 1 Speed Freak, 89 Spouse, 1 “Fan”. 

Phil commented that the “old” temporary membership forms purchased by the club are no longer 

valid. Sue reported on the LEC membership booth at Grand AM and IRL. 

Publicity: Tonya wants to thank the LEC workers who rescued her at the Vintage Motorcycle Event. 

Website: Zolt Dvornik not present. No report. Discussion about who should have access to post “News” 

on the website. Tim will contact Zolt to give Gloria Sheets access to “News” section of website. 

Rallycross: No representative present. No Report. 

Old Business: Gloria and Tim asked how much we pay DLB to list social events. No charge for these 

listings - discussion about the DLB process. Tim doesn’t want to have registration for social events or the 

Banquet online. He said registration will be in the Observer’s Stand and by mail only. 

New Business: Larry Hall would like to see the website used as a tool for Race Chairs. He suggested a 

Race Chair checklist on the website to help keep track of what duties have been completed by Chiefs. 

Find ways to increase communication and take advantage of the technology available to us.

Special Events: Frank Vessel reported the hospital visit in Cleveland for 9/19 was successful. The Berea 

hospital visit has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for October or November. There is a Children’s 

Hospital visit scheduled in November. Hats are continuing to be collected. 

Publicity: Tonya Smith will be relinquishing her post at the end of this year due to expecting twins in 

2008. 

Rally Cross: Orion Fairman was not present but Andy reported they have been having discussions with 

management at National Trails the plan is to hold the first rally cross on the Sunday after the Stanberry 

Cup. There are pre paid sanctions which will be used. 

Solo: Andy Bell reported there have been two events since the last meeting. There is one points event 

left, this is the Stanberry Cup. Three chiefs have indicated they will be retiring after this season and Andy 

is working to recruit new people to take over these positions. 

Worker Licensing: Ronda Knapp was present but no news to report. 

Website: Zsolt Dvornik was present but no news to report. 

Social: Gloria reported that the Sept 26 th Auto Assets Shop Tour has been cancelled, will need to 

reschedule for a time which is convenient for the shop. 

Other upcoming events are Oct 24 th Nominations and Nov 28 th Elections both at Winking Lizard. 

The ballot ad for Mary Jane to put in the Observers Stand will be provided to her. 

The Social committee is working on details for a buffet with the hotel for the banquet. They will provide 

more details after further discussions occur. 

Competition Licensing: Dave Brown had no new update. 

Pro Race: Jude Summers had no news to report. 

Regional Race: Phil reported the weekend was successful; there were 187 participants, due to weather 

however on Sunday there were only 135 cars. There were sufficient workers for the event. 

Scheduling for next year will need to be completed by end of September. 

There were some post race issues which will need to be discussed with race committee; due to 

schedule submission date approaching a meeting is being held at Jude’s house next Wednesday. All chiefs 

will be asked to attend. 

Treasurer’s Report: Phil Alspach distributed and explained the Treasurer’s Report (August), checking 

and savings registers. A copy for the Observers Stand was submitted. 


Summers/Downing 


Observers’ Stand: Mary Jane Berchak reported that the latest issue has been published and mailed. 

She also wanted to share that contribution to the Observers’ Stand has increased from members. 


Membership: Sue Rupp reported updated membership numbers include 17 new members have been 

added since last month. She has also received two e-mails from Mike Dickerson who is looking for active 

membership chairs for each region. 

Regarding the issue of temporary memberships, they are no longer valid for workers; the worker 

incentive program will carry forward. 

Historian: Rebecca Fast not present. The search for a new club historian or assistant historian continues. 

Old Business: 

Tim shared that Doc Mills Memorial Service was successful. The tree has been planted and the plaque is 

being looked into. Also the Dave Stewart plaque is to be replaced. 

The 2008 Drivers School will be held at Nelsons Ledges.

The Ground Hog has been found and is currently serving out his sentence 

for hiding from authorities. Some of his duties include picking 

up cones both during the event and after, assisting with early morning 

registration and other general duties during and after the event. 

Additional duties also include bringing members of the event staff cool 

frosty beverages of choice after the event is done. (yes this includes 

some adult beverages as well...... mmmmm beer mmmmm....

DIFFERENT PROSPECTIVE

Since Ken unretired the K B ENGINEERING rolling 

laboratory and entered the 2007 Autumn Classic 

as a driver and I attended the event as a crew 

member instead of a worker, I thought I’d pass 

along my views of the event from the other side of 

the guardrail. 

The weather was yuukkkky. Fortunately, it was 

only rainy, the wind wasn’t a big issue and the 

temperature wasn’t horrible. 

The tire selection procedure always produced 

stressful results. 

Everything else was someplace between good and 

great. 

We arrived at Registration early on Friday, and 

found that someone had arranged temporary parking 

while we waited for Registration to open. First 

good item. The Registration procedure went 

smoothly and adding a crew member caused no 

problem. Next good item. No problem finding a 

paddock location, and unloading the car. Car and 

driver went to Tech because car needed an Annual. 

Both came back rather quickly with stickers on car 

and new helmet. Another good item. 

the race. But he made it through and got a First in 

class. Two more good things. 

While a “No Schedule” Schedule drives me nuts, I 

understand the need for one and I have gradually 

learned to live with it. It seemed to have really 

been necessary this weekend because of the 

changeable weather. The announcements that 

affected us were timely and easy to understand. 

We were always able to be at the right place at the 

right time. Another good thing. 

The Don Mills Memorial Service was relocated 

because of the weather, but the Service itself was a 

sadly wonderful part of the weekend. 

The Party was dampened by a downpour, but the 

food was good and there was plenty. (The best 

part was that I didn’t have to cook.) 

Let me tell all of you something. FROM THE 

PROSPECTIVE OF THE DRIVER AND CREW, the 

event was well run and enjoyable. 

All of the hard work before the event and at the 

track produced an event that went well for the driver 

and crew and everyone involved in the production 

of the weekend deserves a big pat on the back 

and a thank you from the heart. 

Saturday, driving to the Track, we passed through 

2 rain showers and decided to get rain tires, just 

in case. First tire vendor didn’t have any rains 

that fit the car. Second vendor had 4 tires that 

were the right size. Then came a series of choices—-rains 

or drys. Saturday morning – rains and 

damp but drying track. Turned out not too bad. 

Saturday afternoon, drys with a dry track until the 

pace lap. Entire grid on drys. Rain and storm 

sometimes made it difficult to see across the 

track. Ken survived and even got a trophy. 

Sunday morning —- rains and damp track. OK. 

Sunday afternoon —-spitting rain, which tires? 

Rains and then the track starts to dry out. Ken 

said he was looking for wet spots by the end of

passengers. They almost look as 

strange as the event itself.

A Solo Word ............ 

As solo chair you have 

days and even weekends 

that make your blood 

pressure rise and the 

stress levels make you 

wonder why you ever volunteered 

for the job. (I 

am guessing the club racing 

stewards have the 

same thing as I have seen 

them in action and appreciate 

what they do!) The 

majority of the issues are 

never seen or realized by the average competitor 

and when you are surrounded by 

good people who are all trying to work 

things out, it minimizes the stress. Still, I 

recently wondered if I shouldn’t take up golf 

as an alternate relaxing hobby. Both 

autocross and golf are games of one and 

games of many. They are both about 

improving your own game as much as beating 

others. I started looking at the comparisons:

The clock doesn’t lie about results. 

Ok so they shake out remarkably close. Still, 

the one that makes it for me is that scaring 

myself going as fast as I can. Once the helmet 

goes on, the smile goes ear to ear! So racing 

it will be for me because speed and friendships 

at the track are what still makes it fun for me 

even after all the stress of putting on an event. 

Last weekend I went to help coach at my 

son’s pee wee football game after our race. I 

happened to run into the Commissioner of the 

league. When I saw him he was arguing with 

a half a dozen parents about how long the 

games had gone over their time limits. While I 

talked to him, he had people come up and 

complain that the game balls were too slippery 

for the kids to grip, then he had two irate 

coaches arguing about the legal weight limit of 

one of the kids running the ball in a game. He 

turned to my head coach and myself explained 

that the availability of the playing fields had 

been delayed by the high school grounds crews 

in the morning and had thrown the whole day 

off. When we walked away I thought,” He 

must have some serious stress. Maybe he 

should take up a relaxing hobby, like 

autocross!”

ADVENTURES AT THE 

GREAT LAKES DIVISIONAL 

The inaugural 2007 Great Lakes Divisional was held 

this year at the Grissom Aeroplex in Peru, Indiana. 

Many of our OVR members have raced on this facility 

and this year I thought I would go over to see 

what it was all about. Drew and I packed up Friday 

and headed out for the 3 ½ hour drive across 33 to 

get there for Friday night tech. It was one of our 

more adventurous trips as we seemed to be a target 

for all types of road hazards coming off other vehicles 

along the way. These included a mattress flying 

out of a pick up, Two kayaks sliding off the roof 

of the car in front of us, and a truck blowing a tire 

just in front of us. If anyone doubts the effectiveness 

of autocross sharpening your car control skills, 

I’m prepared to tell you they helped keep us safe on 

that trip! 

Friday night 

We pulled into Peru at a little after 4:00 and found a 

parking spot to leave the kart while we checked out 

what was going on. Jen Meridith got us checked in 

for the weekend and we went off to find how they 

wanted to run tech. That evening we only had a 

few of the karts on site and we quickly went over 

them and got them stickered for the weekend. We 

also went out to walk the course. For those who 

have never gone, Grissom lets the SCCA use an old 

aircraft parking area for their events. The course 

uses the taxiway with aircraft revetments on each 

side. Each revetment is large enough to hold a 

medium bomber, so they create little patches of 

track where you run off the main taxi way, go 

through some features, and pop back out onto the 

taxi way on your way to the next part of the course. 

Drew said it reminded him of a Christmas tree 

where you run out into each branch and then back 

to the trunk each time. That seems like a pretty 

accurate description. 

The course was very long and flowing, so we knew it 

would be quick. The asphalt is older and rough and 

in many places breaking up. For this weekend, the 

major rough spots were avoided and we never had a 

problem even in the karts. 

That night we went to the Air museum where we 

were making camp and spent the night visiting and 

chatting with the other competitors camping there. 

Saturday 

I woke up Saturday in the tent and it felt COLD! 

It was probably in the 50’s but coming straight 

from 90 degree weather it was a shock. Drew 

and I quickly got dressed and Drew jumped into 

his driver’s suit which was the only thing he had 

with long sleeves. We headed out to the site and 

hooked up with the Hoovers so we could see how 

the day would go. They introduced me to the 

McClintock and Sheidler familes. For those who 

don’t know this group of F125 drivers from 

Michigan, they make up about 5 of the top 10 

autocross F125’s in the country. We had talked 

many times on the phone but it was good to put 

names with faces. From there we went to find 

out where kart grid would be and ran into our first 

snag of the weekend. Over the course of the next 

few hours we were told 3 different places to grid 

the karts. This was very frustrating and in retrospect 

I should have been more firm about where I 

wanted the karts. 

The race 

Neva was anxious to try out the new gearing on 

her kart. The girls ran a group ahead of the guys 

and formula juniors so I was able to watch her 

race. Neva was up against Jackie McClintock as 

her competition. The new gears really made a 

difference and Neva battled neck and neck with 

Jackie through the first 3 runs. At the end of 3 

runs Jackie held the lead by .3 sec. Jackie then 

threw down a scorcher run to end the day .7 

ahead of Neva. 

Drew went out next and was very close to the 

Formula A kids in time. When he came in he 

refused to tell me what it was like until I had done 

my first run! Thanks kid! He ran smooth all day 

and just could not quite catch the older kids. After 

the third run it was obvious that we should regear 

for the bigger track but since he had no competition 

in his class we let it ride for the day. 

For the first time in a few years I had butterflies 

as I climbed into the kart. The two things on my 

mind were the surface (I’ve never driven on concrete) 

and how fast Neva and Jackie had just run. 

(Ok I admit it I was afraid that the girls would 

beat me this weekend!) At that point all of the 

kart drivers had told me to be careful on the start 

because it was very easy to stall the kart on the 

concrete due to the extra grip. As I rolled to the 

line and took off I realized I had forgot to clear out 

the engine and so bogged badly for the first 20 or 

30 feet before the engine cleared out and I was on 

my way! Wow was it fast. The kart just STUCK 


everywhere on the concrete. When I got back to 

grid I watched the other two drivers running with 

me finish and I was in the lead! It didn’t last. The 

second driver group for the F125 class included Alan 

Sheidler who was on fire all weekend and my short 

lived lead was over as he crossed the line over a 

second ahead of me. My second run had a better 

start but I pushed way to hard into the slalom and 

killed my momentum correcting for it. My third run 

was better but I bogged the motor again on the 

start. At this point Brian Hoover pulled me aside for 

a pep talk. He asked if I was OK since the kart was 

driving on rails and he knows I like to pitch it 

around to get fast. He was right and now I had a 

feel for the concrete so I pushed harder on the last 

run to end up with my best time of the day. 

Unfortunately this was 2 seconds off my closest 

competitor and almost 3 seconds off the lead! 

Ouch! These guys are the reason karts have the 

PAX they do. They can drive to that level! 

After the day ended, some minor course corrections 

were added to allow us to run the course the other 

direction. We took some time to walk the new layout 

and then went to meet the Hoovers to go find 

some dinner. We went to Harvey Hinclemeyer’s in 

Peru and had some great Italian food and company 

for the evening. Neva had heard that the temp 

would drop into the low 40’s that night so Drew and 

I were thankful that Brian and Neva invited us to 

sleep in the sleeper cab of their truck rather than 

the tent. At 4 in the morning a heavy but short rain 

hit as well, so it was good to be protected from the 

elements! 

Sunday Prep 

When we got to the site Sunday, we went to work 

on putting a new spur gear on Drew’s kart. As soon 

as I had it in place I realized that we were out of 

adjustment room on the motor and would need to 

remove more links from Drew’s chain. We borrowed 

a chain break and halfway through the operation the 

tool broke. Brian and I got creative on removing 

the links and got everything together just in time to 

roll the karts up to grid. 

I also talked quite a bit with Alan and made some 

significant tire pressure changes for the day based 

on his recommendations. 

Sunday race 

run cleanly and with an outstanding time, so the 

gap in the final results looked a bit larger than the 

close race that had taken place to that point. 

The juniors were all very close together again and 

Drew was just behind. We did have some drama 

on Drew’s first run as he neared the end of the 

track we heard the engine rev suddenly indicating 

he had lost drive to the wheels. He calmly 

reached up, switched off the engine and continued 

to coast about 100 feet and across the finish line 

for a clean albeit slow run. His mechanic let him 

down again. I had done so much work on the 

chain I had forgotten to go back and tighten the 

spur gear nuts. They had backed off which 

allowed the spur gear to wobble and the chain to 

pop off. No damage was done and we quickly had 

everything back together for his last two runs. He 

ended up about 1-2 seconds behind two of the formula 

junior A’s and 4 seconds off the winner. 

Since he was the only one in FJB he went home a 

Divisional Champion. 

Sunday I felt much more comfortable with the kart 

and track and had three good runs with the kart 

moving around more in the manner I am used to. 

It still wasn’t enough to close the gap, but I felt 

good about the experience and the fact that I kept 

improving all weekend. Alan Sheidler took home 

the win in the class edging out JT 

McClintock,almost 4 seconds ahead of me! 

We wrapped up and had trophies, and were on the 

road by 2:00. Other winners from OVR were 

Jason Tipple and Mike Perakis. I want to thank 

the race organizers who put the event together. It 

is very had to coordinate things across regions and 

I felt that the event ran well. 

Drew and I had a good time. I highly recommend 

attending a divisional or higher race. You really 

get to see how drivers take the competitive edge 

to the next level both in improving themselves and 

the equipment they run. It is also a much more 

intense experience with the way the race is run 

and the flow of the course. I am a firm believer 

that you will only improve to the level you compete 

with. Competing at this level can take your 

local game to a whole new place! 

Neva and Jackie continued their Saturday battle. As 

they went into the 3 rd run Jackie was just a little 

ahead and Neva decided to do an all out run since 

she had nothing to lose. As Neva completed the 

first part of the course she went just a bit wide hit a 

bump and the kart looped. Jackie completed her 


VOLUNTEERS NEEDED 

I would like to get on my soapbox to address some issues that I would like to focus on going into next 

season. We will be planning for 2008 soon and that’s where you, the solo competitor for OVR, come in. 

We need help and volunteers for our solo specialties going into next year. 

The specialty chiefs that are responsible for providing our smooth running events need help. We need 

fresh blood waiting in the wings to give them a break once in a while. The majority of the chiefs in the 

solo program have been a chief for 6-7 years or longer and many are getting to the burn out stage or 

simply want to switch or reduce some responsibilities. Our chiefs show up tirelessly to every event and 

their only rewards are your thanks for the job they do and a discount on their entries. It is extremely 

rare when a chief is not available for an event and surprisingly difficult to find substitutes when they are 

out. Several have come to events this year when they didn’t even have vehicles to drive and still fulfilled 

their obligations. We have so much new blood with enthusiasm for the sport, that we need some of those 

individuals to step forward into some leadership roles. In the last two years we have backfilled our registration 

chief, worker chief, timing chief, and novice coordinator, created the waiver chief positions, and 

even broken in a new solo chair. That said, the chiefs for safety, course set up and tear down, and course 

design have all let me know that they would like to try other positions, retire as chiefs, or go part time 

so they don’t have to be at EVERY event. In my opinion all of these individuals have gone above and 

beyond for the club and the program and I would like to help them out with their wishes. None of the 

positions is a “for life” thing although I often feel they are viewed that way. In many clubs these responsibilities 

rotate every few events. 

This is also your opportunity to get involved with the group that controls way the program runs and really 

be able to incorporate any new ideas or changes that you think can help the program. Forums are 

great and can provide food for thought, but they are all talk. Becoming a chief is a way to bring the subjects 

to action. If you are interested in a chief’s position please contact me at any time. Now is a great 

opportunity to get involved, because you can work into the position to see if you like it and not just have 

it thrust upon you. Even giving a chief a break for a couple events will help. 

If you choose not to be a chief, learn to lend a hand. All of the officials you see at a solo event are volunteers. 

There is too much work for just a few people to do everything that needs to be done before, during 

and after an event. We always need help lining the course, marking cones, sweeping the track and 

setting up Moby in the morning. In the afternoon when others are relaxing waiting for trophies, we are 

stacking cones, storing the timing systems and repacking Moby for the next event. We would love to be 

able to change our tires and relax too, but cleaning up is part of autocross and if everyone can pitch in to 

do a little to help us pack, then no one has to do a lot and the quicker we can get to trophies

Vehicle Description 1989 Honda Race Car 

History, firehawk, Louis Rivera, T.C.Klein, Never 

licensed for the street, It was a factory sponsored 

race car with a production no of 00004, I purchased 

the car from Louis Rivera and raced in NASA and 

SCCA for 7 years in ITA as well as H4. Equipment, 

Include new D16a6 engine from Honda with three 

races on it, also Two spare short blocks and one 

spare head, these need work and assembly. 

Aluminum Radiator, Oil cooler, oil and temp gauges. 

tachometer with rev light, Momo Steering wheel, 

rear stabilizer, front shock tower support, 800 lb 

springs, Koni shocks, fronts have been revalved and 

are adjustable, Aluminum flywheel and hd pressure 

plate and competition clutch, includes, new Hawk 

blue pads and rotors (to be installed by purchaser), 

spare fender, two short blocks and spare head. two 

spindles, spare headers. All the recent motor work, 

and trans. rebuild was done by Mark Connolly from 

Pittsburg, the final drive gear was added then and 

the new Honda block installed. Head prep was done 

by Mark Connolly.The roll cage was by Street n 

Track . It is fully welded via floor plates and integrated 

with the Body and a crossover bar connects 

the rear shock mounts for added stiffness. The 

Nascar style door bars are low , to accomodate a 

large driver. The seat is a large Kirkey and is mounted 

on floor stays and integrated with the body, It 

has an adjustable back support approved by 

SCCA.The logbook is included and a transponder is 

already installed. The car has been lightened by 

removing firewall padding and bumper plugs and 

other non essentials and curb weight w/o driver is 

around 1825 lbs. All you need to race is the brakes 

installed and the proper tires added, and other normal 

prep items. It was last driven in 2005. Has the 

new mainshaft with the lower final drive gear, I 

think is 4.92, it scoots out of the corners and also 

has the Quaife limited slip drive.I will include the 

ZDyne computer I used for the purchaser utilizing 

Buy It Now.And I have tires, wheels and a Paramore 

head, With the Head and the computer The dyno 

results were 132 at the rear wheels.will deal on
