Last.
Spiegel unserer inneren Welt.
The Physical Theatre piece Olotila (State of Being) explores the body and its
fragility, its limits and the cult of its perfection. Here disability is included as part
of humanity and not merely a bothersome burden. In a breathless row of almost
sketch-like scenes, in which disabled and non-disabled perform together, the secret
of the piece is revealed: Olotila stirs in us, mostly non-disabled audience, like a
mirror of our inner world. We encounter parts of life we all recognize: incompleteness,
feelings of worthlessness, the limits of physicality, but also joy and pride.
The piece finds through the body language of everyday life and individual movement
quality of each performer a touching yet self-ironic language. It integrates the
disabled and non-disabled dancers into a whole that lives from consciously placed
contrasts and self critique. The piece achieves to ignore conventions and to
transgress borders so, that in the end it doesn’t matter who is disabled and who
not.
PRESSESTIMMEN
Spiegel unserer eigenen inneren Welt.
Arnd Wesemann, Tanz Aktuell
„Die Choreographie von Tomi Paasonen ist perfekt. Nichts Überflüssiges, kein Stolpern – alles funktioniert. Das Berliner
Publikum staunt.“
erheben.“
Anne-Marie Elmby, Dance International
Ann Jonsson, Schwedische Dans Tidning
Jussi Tossavainen, Helsingin Sanomat
PRESS QUOTES
“The audience gets out of its mind! Out of the imprisonment of the defects of their bodies, comes out rare beauty.”
“Naturally these override the classically trained helpers in beauty, strength and elegance.”
Arnd Wesemann, Tanz Aktuell
“Tomi Paasonen’s choreography is perfect. No fumble, no stumble – everything works. The Berlin audience is breathless.”
Gitte Lauströer Hufvudstadsbladet 8.12.2004
“The implicit social criticism invited reflection, but one still left the performance with an optimistic feeling and a deep
respect for people who rise above their physical obstacles with dignity and humour.”
Anne-Marie Elmby, Dance International
“No one leaves the theatre untouched. The piece is powerful, enriching, liberating and self-ironic.”
“In many countries it probably wouldn’t have been possible to show.”
“This is a performance of strong impressions with attentive stillness, where silence feels unusually intruding. But the
black humour and self-irony is never far away.”
Ann Jonsson, Swedish Dans Tidning
“The performers really open up since the choreographer moulds the material out of each ones possibilities. Hence it is
no wonder that Olotila has been played over and over again for two years, shown in festivals and received awards.”
Jan Johansson, Malmö Magasinet
“Olotila is brilliantly funny, gently ironic, dramatically touching and an incredibly inventive piece of dance theatre.”
“Olotila is far more developed in its artistic ambition, in its refusal to compromise and even in its way of being political.
It leaves no space for pity or sympathy, but it earns its praise simply because it is an authentically superb show.”
“Paasonen does everything exactly like one isn’t supposed to.”
“Olotila is the kind of self-ironic intelligent theatre in which an endless stream of inventive scenes mixes the card-game
perfectly. It puts every performer on the same start-line so that in the end it’s hard to say who is disabled anymore.”
Jussi Tossavainen, Helsingin Sanomat
“Olotila worked for us mostly physically non-disabled audience, as a mirror of our own inner world. It brought out sensitive
and painful issues so directly and from the bottom of the heart, that as a spectator, one didn’t even have a chance to
hide ones own fragility behind a façade. When a certain door is opened and issues are presented upright without
unnecessary explanations or without the camouflage of a role, it can grab you very deeply.”
“In this performance I was confronted with basic all encompassing issues of being a human, feelings of our own incapability,
worthlessness and insignificance that are common to everyone, as well as joy, pride and even love. When discoveries,
declarations and experiences about basic questions in life are exposed in an open and sturdy way, it strips you from all
defences.”
Biographie
Tomi Paasonen, geboren 1970 in Helsinki, tanzte als Solist beim Hamburg Ballett, dem Lines Ballet, San
Francisco und dem Joffrey Ballet, Chicago. Seit 1991 choreographierte er nebenbei auch eigene Tanzstücke
in Hamburg, San Francisco und Chicago. Er war Mitbegründer der spartenübergreifenden
Kunstproduktionsfabrik, KUNST-STOFF in San Francisco. Für sie kreierte er 15 Werke innerhalb dreieinhalb
Jahren.
Biography
Tomi Paasonen, born 1970 in Helsinki, was a soloist dancer with Hamburg Ballet, Lines Ballet San
Francisco and The Joffrey Ballet. He continually created works of his own throughout his dance career
before 1998 co-founding KUNST-STOFF, a media-dance-art production company in San Francisco. After
creating 15 pieces 3,5 years he moved to Berlin in 2001 launching PAA (Public Artistic Affairs) expanding
his stage-, film and photo works to involve documentary layers working with peripheral societies in award
winning productions like “STATE OF BEING” with disabled and professional dancers and "ICARUS-
DEPARTURE TEGEL", a co-production with Germany's largest male prison. The photo exhibition “GALA
DRESS”, with a 70-year-old disabled artist Tuuli Helkky Helle was followed by an opera based on unfinished
fragments by Claude Debussy and Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” in
Kiasma, Helsinki. During the last years his pieces have studied justifiable dramaturgic relationships between
live video installations and the performer. The Berlin-based philosophic identity trilogy consisting of
“PRESENTATION”, “MeMore – searching for the red thread” and “D.I.D. – a choir piece for one man”
explore self image and relationship to the self, at first through the doctrine of repetition and difference and
self projection, then through the lens of memory and the relationship to the past, and at last through multiple
personality syndrome, torn inner dialogues, schizophrenia and extreme states.
PAA (Public Artistic Affairs) is Tomi Paasonen’s realm of artistic outlet based in Berlin. Through diverse
artistic mediums he aims to confuse the periphery with the centre and embody mainstream alternatively.
PAA creates performances and installations using dance, body art, light, video audio, photography and
fine arts to create multi facetted explorations of each theme it approaches. Collaborations between artists
of different genres, scientists and personalities off of the street are ingredients that connect surreality with
reality, theatre with life and art with documentary.
