Action 1. Approval of the Agenda, Approval of the Minutes<br />

The agenda was approved with no additions. The minutes of the Resident<br />

Section Meeting June 25, 2008 were approved, with the addition that the<br />

representative from Toronto was absent.<br />

2. Review Responsibilities of Resident Representatives and Liaisons<br />

Document outlining role of Resident Representatives was distributed and<br />

discussed. Document will be redistributed to current representatives and to be<br />

used for recruiting successors.<br />

Unanimous to have length of term flexible, one or two representatives.<br />

Advantages and disadvantages of 1 to 2 year term and of 1 or 2 program<br />

representatives discussed. Only one travel stipend and conference registration<br />

available per program per year. Selection of incoming representatives to be as<br />

democratic as possible, completed by September 1 st .<br />

Communication<br />

Resident Section will use personal emails to communicate. Will trial EForum<br />

in the fall when available, primarily for group discussions.<br />

Teleconference – plan to have one teleconference per year in order to discuss<br />

ongoing projects. UBC rep brought up issue of time differences between – will<br />

try to accommodate. Aim for early fall.<br />

Residents Corner Newsletter<br />

Representatives to update program reports 2 times per year, and solicit articles<br />

and submissions for revamped newsletter.<br />

Decision to have Newsletter Subcommittee: Dina K, Jodi O, ShaleeResident<br />

Newsletter – plan to revamp, open to new ideas, similar to AAP. Idea of having<br />

a committee to be responsible for newsletter/editing– Dina (U of T), Jodi (Mac),<br />

Shalea (Queen’s).<br />

Deadlines for submissions: Nov 23 rd and March 22 nd<br />

Promote Grants and Opportunities<br />

Representatives to promote many opportunities for residents through CPS.<br />

3. Section membership and finances<br />

CPS Resident Section and CPS Board Members will advocate to residency<br />

programs to pay for resident memberships (inconsistent across country).<br />

Resident representatives to present to resident group by August 31 st and to<br />

medical students by October 31 st .<br />

Goal to increase Resident Section membership and involvement over next year.<br />

4. Executive Director Discussion<br />

Marie Adele Davis, Executive Director CPS, attended meeting.<br />

Discussed potential advocacy activities for Resident Section:<br />

• Nov 20 th , 2009: 20 th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of<br />

Child<br />

• Injury prevention, national injury prevention strategy<br />

• Early years: December issue of <strong>Paediatric</strong>s and Child Health will be on<br />

topic, could link well with literacy/read speak sing<br />

• Poverty – CPS poverty statement in fall<br />

• HAL- Claire leblanc looked at hospital menus – should wait to see<br />

outcome of that research or February Olympics<br />

CPS Board Members at each centre should be aware and involved in our<br />

projects.<br />

Marie encouraged residents to promote and apply for advocacy grants and also<br />

in French<br />

Marie also expressed that she is happy to visit different centres to present to<br />

residents re advocacy<br />

Marie explained CPS board and learning advantages of being on the board.<br />

5. Resident Executive Report – 2008/2009<br />

Fellowship synchronization discussed. Document available on CPS Resident<br />

Section website. Goal is now for common date, although rolling match will<br />

most likely not proceed.<br />

Clinical Case for residents planned for 2010 conference.<br />

Residents Corner, newsletter, revamped.<br />

Vice President of Resident Section now voting member CPS Board.<br />

6. Projects for 2009/2010<br />

National Resident Advocacy Day<br />

Initial national resident activities decided to be:<br />

• November 20: 20 th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the<br />

Child<br />

Residents to investigate Tshirt campaign, with Tshirt for each resident<br />

Consider selling Tshirts to staff<br />

Consider activities: launch with media, poster/tshirt designing with patients<br />

• Injury Prevention<br />

Residents to investigate if there is an existing national injury prevention<br />

day, and if so coordinate.<br />

To organize a day where residents across country will wear bicycle helmets<br />

throughout day to promote injury prevention.<br />

7. Conference Vancouver 2010:<br />

Potential speakers for Resident Advocacy Dinner/ Resident Sponsored<br />

Concurrent Session discussed:<br />

Greg Kielberger; Dr. Pascal (government report for early childhood education);<br />

Ken Dryden;<br />

Clyde Hurstman; Nicholas Steinmetz (Montreal); Marla Shapiro (CTV<br />

correspondent); Kent Saylor(Mohawk <strong>Paediatric</strong>ian, Aboriginal Child health<br />

curriculum)<br />

8. Elections<br />

Elections for Vice President deferred, with plan to have electronic<br />

nominations, submissions and voting over the next 3 weeks.<br />

International Child Health Liaisons position. Three candidates: Julie<br />

Johnstone, Terry Varshney, Melissa Langevine. Terry elected.<br />

Nominations and selections of other resident liaisons to opened up across<br />

country over next 3 weeks.<br />
