EMBARK
From the editor...
Having just attended my 20th high school reunion (the tenth seems like it was four
years ago), I’m feeling a bit old. When I run, my knees ache; when I don’t run, my back
aches. When I squint or raise my eyebrows, I need Botox. Grandmom always said,
“Aging is better than the alternative,” but I’m not ready to grow up.
WHERE YOU LIVE
3415-17 Ocean Front Walk
Despite never having been a staunch supporter of the whole “Just Say No” thing, I
guess I have to admit that saying “Yes” to cookies hasn’t been doing the trick. Alas, it’s
time to stop whining and start getting back in shape.
This issue of PacificSD focuses on the body, inside and out. The sparkling cover and
fashion editorial pages were shot at Downtown’s epic new mega-gym, FIT Athletic
Club. In body, five new workouts will make you sweat, whether you’re wearing boxing
gloves or jumping a virtual rope with Nintendo’s Wii Fit.
In COOLTURE, Robin Miller, host of the Food Network’s Quick Fix Meals with Robin
Miller, demonstrates how to prepare foods that promote healthy skin. Joining Miller
and describing the science behind her illuminating cuisine is Dr. Amir Moradi, one of
San Diego’s top cosmetic surgeons.
Inside, you’ll also find a guide to Uptown dining, a rockin’ resource of outdoor concert
venues, and a blind date at East Village Tavern & Bowl and Basic Urban Kitchen & Bar.
You are what you eat. I, therefore, am a vodka tonic with a side of
rolled tacos and guacamole. Seems like I may need to eat some
wheat grass to age gracefully. Make that grassfully.
YOGA
Even if you don’t lose weight, at
least your wallet will get thinner.
by Cookie “chainsaw” randolph
Fitness is a $14 billion industry,
which puts its right behind oil
and Starbucks as one of the most
lucrative enterprises on the planet.
There are so many options you
can sign up to make monthly
payments for: spinning, swimming,
boxing, Pilates, weightlifting,
rowing—and for yoga, we have
yadda, yadda and hot yadda.
They’re all wonderful, but which to choose? Here is one man’s guide to exercise for consumers.
YOGA is a group of ancient spiritual practices originating in India. In America, it’s where women in
leotards wonder about the creepy guy in the back of the room. Yoga is great, but never assume a
position beyond your ability. If you can’t do a downward-facing dog, try a downward-facing puppy.
If you sweat profusely, avoid Hot Yoga. Slip-N-Slides have better traction than wet yoga mats.
WEIGHTLIFTING is a gateway exercise to becoming Governator, which is great if you can live with
man-boobs and Kennedy cousins once you retire. You never see Bosu balls near the bench press,
because they would pop from all the discarded steroid syringes. As for the grunting and guys named
Chuck yelling, “Push it!”—this is what it would sound like if men gave birth. Great way to build muscle
mass and outgrow a perfectly good shirt collection.
THE BOXING CLUB and similar gyms are there to teach us that three minutes can be the longest
time on earth. I used to think three minutes was a brief amount of time (like for an egg, or my wedding
night), but time does not fly in the boxing ring. The only things that do fly are the bees in your head
after you walk into a straight right hand. “Get your hands up!” Uh, they were up until my gloves
morphed into dumbbells. “Is it three minutes yet?” BAM! Don’t ask, it was only 1:15.
SPINNING used to be called “stationary bicycles,” but now it’s a theater-in-the-round with an
instructor in the middle barking out commands. Crank the knob up for hills, crank it down for flat
ground. Close your eyes and imagine you’re Lance Armstrong... getting a colonoscopy. The great thing
about spinning is that you can get absolutely nowhere much faster than on a treadmill.
ROWING MACHINES are another way to get nowhere fast with the bonus of looking even more
ridiculous. This machine is good practice for starting a lawnmower or pulling your hands away from
a hot stove. The double-arm pull-back is also a great disco move for when Donna Summer comes to
Viejas in August.
SWIMMING LAPS is the ultimate low-impact, high-aerobic method of exercise. It can be boring,
though. One guy I know focuses on all the lovers he’s had, one per 50-yard lap. 36 lovers cover a mile. I
can swim seven miles just thinking about the women that have turned me down. Even so, it’s better to
concentrate on that than the Seniors Waterobics class that just left the pool.
Regardless of your fitness choice, one fundamental irony about going to the gym will never change:
We’ll bust our humps once inside, but outside we’ll always look for the closest available parking space.
Chainsaw sometimes sits on a Bosu ball during the “Dave, Shelly and Chainsaw” morning
show on 101.5 KGB-FM. chainsaw@101kgb.com

BY MARIA C. HUNT PHOTOS BY CHRISTOPHER FENNESSEY
THE FOOD NETWORK’S Robin Miller COOKs FOR healthy skin (SEE HER RECIPES AT viviteskincare.com)
More than 100 years ago, French
foodie and philosopher Jean Anthelme
Brillat-Savarin expounded on the idea
that “you are what you eat.”
Eating for health isn’t a new idea, but
these days, while the trend is to try to
maintain a youthful appearance for as
long a possible, the foods we eat are
taking on even more significance.
Host of the Food Network’s Quick
Fix and author of several cookbooks,
Robin Miller visited San Diego in May
to tout the benefits of antioxidant-rich
foods. Her appearance was part of the
Aesthetic Meeting 2008, an annual
conference for the cosmetic surgery
industry.
In front of a crowd of doctors, drug
company reps and scalpel purveyors,
Miller prepares shrimp skewers with a
tomato-chipotle chili rub, and orangeanise
sorbet with chamomile tea. While
cooking, she explains how eating some
plant phytochemicals can help people
feel and look good longer.
“Eating for beautiful skin is so easy to
do,” says Miller, a registered dietitian
and spokeswoman for Vivite, a new line
of skincare products from Allergan,
Inc., the Irvine-based pharmaceutical
firm that produces Botox. Vivite
contains antioxidants and glycolic acid
derived from many of the same natural
ingredients Miller uses when preparing
meals. “It all starts with nutrition,” she
says.
Citrus fruits
are rich in
vitamin C,
which helps
the skin
produce
collagen, a substance that keeps the
skin looking fresh; mushrooms offer
lentinan, which boosts the immune
system and fights cancer; bell peppers
contain beta carotene, which has
important anti-aging effects; tomatoes
contain lycopene, which is important
for preventing sunburn and protecting
the skin from ultraviolet light damage.
“Tell me what you eat, and
I will tell you what you are.”
Brillat-Savarin
“I always knew that bell peppers and
mangos were good for our internal
organs,” says Miller, “but we didn’t
always think of the skin, even though
it’s the largest organ in our body.”
On hand to speak to the medical side
of Miller’s cooking, Dr. Amir Moradi,
a well-known Vista plastic surgeon,
explains that Vivite’s unique blend of
antioxidants and glycolic acid allows it
to help prevent skin damage and repair
existing damage.
Pollution,
smoke and
ultra-violet
light damage
the skin and
cause the
production of
free radicals, which are unstable cells.
Free radicals lead to fine lines and
wrinkles, dry skin, hyper-pigmentation
and the loss of elasticity — all of which
THE SKINNY
ON SKIN
Dr. Amir Moradi
and the Food
Network’s Robin
Miller discuss
cooking for
healthy skin.
can produce visible signs of aging.
“Vitamin C and E are antioxidants;
they stop the process of free radical
formation and may stabilize those
free radical molecules,” Moradi says.
“Glycolic acid draws moisture to
the skin, which causes new collagen
formation and increases elasticity.”
Even though his practice administers
more Botox and Restalyne (wrinkle
filler) treatments than any other
practice in San Diego County, Moradi
says that it’s best to use proper
nutrition and skincare to head off the
effects of aging.
“Prevention is the best medicine,” the
doctor says.
at these boxing and martial arts gyms.
As more women turn to boxing and martial arts for fitness, self defense and the thrill of competition, the phrase “fight like a girl”
has taken on new meaning. Ten or 15 years ago, boxing gyms were bare bones, sweat-soaked warehouses without a woman in
sight. Now, as women enter this male-dominated world, martial arts gyms have turned full-service, offering everything from juice
bars to saunas—along with a good ass-kicking. Thanks in part to the popularity of films like Million Dollar Baby and Girlfight,
boxing and martial arts gyms are popping up all over San Diego. Whether you’re looking to get in shape or enter the ring, try
one of these female-friendly gyms to release the fighter within. Guys, be prepared to fight like a girl or get beaten by one.
Krank
It Up
LOOK MA, NO LEGS
(AND LESS FAT).
WALK
this way
LET THE ANTI-SHOES DO THE WORK.
The Masai are a group of semi-nomadic people
in Kenya and northern Tanzania—an unlikely
inspiration for a hot new footwear trend that’s flying
off the shelves at $249 a pair… and up.
The Masai are known for their long, lean bodies and
excellent posture. Masai Barefoot Technology (MBT)
shoes are meant to emulate the Masai experience
of walking barefoot on soft, uneven ground, which
the manufacturer says will lighten and tone your
feet and ankles, calves, hamstrings, upper and inner
thighs, buttocks, stomach and back.
The newest innovation in
fitness training was born
right here in San Diego. In
2002, the creator of Spinning,
Johnny Goldberg (a.k.a.
Johnny G.), was in La Jolla
attending the Challenged
Athletes Foundation’s annual
fundraiser, the Tour de Cove.
Out of curiosity, he rode one
of the athlete’s handcycles.
Though he’s a worldrenowned
fitness expert and
seasoned athlete, he was
exhausted just ten minutes
into riding. The experience
inspired him to begin a fiveyear
journey to find a way to
use the upper body to fuel a
cardiovascular workout.
Johnny G.’s invention is
called a Krankcycle; the
workout is Kranking. The
Krankcycle is like a Spinning
bike but with pedals for the
hands. You can either sit or
stand, moving your arms
together or independently
to turn the height-adjustable
crank. Kranking gives you a
fast power workout for the
upper body and core, and
it’s a great way to retain
cardiovascular fitness when
the legs need a rest.
If you’ve ever been sidelined
by a leg injury, you know
that 90 percent of the cardio
equipment in gyms exercises
the lower body. Kranking is
the first fitness program to
use primarily the arms and
for more info, visit frogsfit.com or krankcycle.com
shoulders for cardio training.
This is great news for anyone
who can’t use their lower
limbs, as well as for people
who are bored with the
same old options for upper
body conditioning. Research
shows that well-developed
upper bodies build strength
and endurance, and increase
your metabolism—not to
mention making you look
great in a tank top.
The Krankcycle was unveiled
in 2007; Kranking classes
are exclusively available at
Frog’s Fitness locations in
Carmel Mountain Ranch,
Encinitas, Solana Beach and
Long Beach.
MBT shoes were invented in 1997 by a Swiss
engineer, Karl Mueller. The shoes have a thick,
convex sole, a soft heel and a hard center under
the arch. The curved, layered sole lengthens the
body into an upright posture and encourages use
of neglected muscle groups. Walking or jogging in
MBT shoes engages weakened muscles and burns
more calories, which helps tone and strengthen
rarely-used muscles. Even when you’re standing still,
MBT shoes make your muscles work to maintain a
center of balance.
Although the shoes have been available in the
United States since 2003, they have only recently
become a hot item among those who care about
style as much as function. The spring 2008 line
features a modern twist on the Mary Jane and a
sandal with a Nubuck leather upper, microfiber
lining, split leather insole and the signature oneand-a-half
inch sole.
WITH THE TRX SUSPENSION TRAINER
by rebecca chappell
If you can spare 20 minutes a
day, three days a week, you
can pump yourself up one
glistening, rock-hard body.
Must be true – the voice
on the TV commercial says
so. And all this for only $14
a month (for 37 years) plus
shipping and handling and
a little cursing when you
can’t decipher the assembly
instructions.
Finally, there’s a simpler,
cheaper way to reach peak
fitness. Just ask LaDainian
Tomlinson. The Chargers
superstar can probably afford
more expensive equipment,
but he frequently works out
with an ultra-portable TRX
Suspension Trainer, available
for about $200.
The efficient and versatile TRX
is made of plastic handles
attached to industrial-strength
nylon straps, which hang by
interchangeable anchors
from a variety of overhead
structures, including door
frames, park equipment and
trees. Developed by a Navy
SEAL, TRX builds strength,
balance and flexibility, creating
resistance by harnessing the
user’s own bodyweight. Its
simple design allows users
to transition easily between
hundreds of exercises that
involve gripping the handles
or hanging lower limbs
through the straps.
“TRX is a form of bodyweight
training,” explains Todd
Durkin, personal trainer
and owner of Fitness Quest
10, a gym with two Scripps
Ranch locations. “Since it’s
suspension training, it recruits
a lot more of the smaller
muscles that must remain
stabilized while working the
large muscles.” TRX’s efficacy
in building core muscles,
improving range of motion
and increasing strength makes
it one of the primary tools
Durkin uses to train Tomlinson
and 30 other NFL players.
“As football players, they get
pounded on all the time,” he
says. “They love TRX because
it’s really challenging, but it’s
not hard on their joints.”
Even Gunnar Peterson,
personal trainer to the stars,
employs TRX to tone up his
A-list clientele, which includes
Gwen Stefani, Angelina Jolie
and David Beckham. So if you
want to bend it like Posh’s
husband, consider strapping
on a TRX – hang it by the TV
so you can watch Bowflex
commercials for inspiration.
Think all video gamers are overweight and out of
shape? Nintendo is trying to change that with Wii
Fit, a new product unveiled on May 21 that turns
your Wii into a personal trainer. An accessory to
the incredibly popular gaming system, the Wii
Fit comes with a disk and a balance board about
the size of a bathroom scale. The board not only
measures your weight and Body Mass Index (BMI),
but also shows you your exact center of balance.
“It’s a great way to insert a fitness routine into your
day,” says Andrew Urbanek, owner of Games On
video game store in Pacific Beach. “Wii Fit really
brings your weight and fitness to the forefront of
your mind. It becomes a game to watch how your
weight fluctuates and to see what you can do to
drop a few pounds.”
The disk comes with four main categories of games:
strength training, aerobics, yoga and balance
games. Jump on the balance board to practice
slalom skiing, join a soccer game and head or kick
balls that come your way, do pushups while the
board tells you if you’re leaning to one side, or
swing a virtual hula hoop along with the computergenerated
people on the screen. You can also run
in place, while the Wii Fit acts as a pedometer and
tracks your progress.
Hard Rock Hotel’s Nobu Restaurant
Praised by critics and obsessed over by celebrities (including co-owner, Robert
De Niro), Nobu Restaurants span the globe from Honolulu to Milan. Finally, Nobu
Matsuhisa’s culinary empire has arrived in San Diego–Nobu’s sleek, black doors
opened in November 2007 inside the equally hip Hard Rock Hotel.
Nobu is famous for their sushi and
gourmet Japanese cuisine. “The food
works, because it doesn’t burden the
palette with too many flavors, says the
San Diego Nobu’s head chef, David
Meade. “The simplicity is genius.”
He didn’t go to culinary school. He isn’t
even Japanese. It was purely by focusing
on his lofty goals that Meade rose to the
level of directing a critically acclaimed
restaurant group’s opening of their
newest location. Such an undertaking
must be stressful. “Of course you feel
some pressure with the deadlines and
having to set up the restaurant,” Meade
says. “But that’s fun pressure.” Anyone
who does this for a living thrives on it.”
Meade grew up in the restaurant
industry, but his dream was to be a
professional singer, not to become a
chef like his father. “I had long hair,” he
remembers. At the age of 24, he strayed
from his path toward rock stardom to
devote his career to food.
Today, Meade is inspired sometimes by
food itself, but more often by an idea.
“It pops into your head, and there’s the
need to see it through onto the plate.
Also, the response you get when people
eat it. That feeling is inspiring.”
What food can’t the chef resist? “Cereal.
I’m a cereal freak,” he says.
Haleh (pronounced “Hah-lay”) is a senior engineer at a local
digital media company. She seeks a mate who is caring, serious,
handsome, intelligent and philosophical. Add about 50 more
criteria to that, and you have Haleh’s perfect man. Talk about tall
order. (Yep, he’s got to be tall, too.)
Adam, a goal-oriented and deeply focused gym-owner and business
coach, just got out of a two-year relationship. He is philosophical
and claims to be up for anything. Curious as to whether
or not he exhibits any of the other traits on Haleh’s list, PacificSD
set the two up for a blind date. Both Haleh and Adam are intense
and driven, which should cause a spark, if not a conflagration.
meet haleh
Haleh knows what she wants and asked PacificSD to help find her find it. Here’s what she wrote:
Dear PacificSD,
Your February blind date
story said, “If you have a
taste for love, email us.” I’m
not really certain this is the
right way to go about finding
L.O.V.E., but, since I don’t really
try or go out of my way, I
sort of wanted to take on this
challenge and step out of my
comfort zone. So here I am.
Here’s some information
about me and what I am
interested in:
I’m a 33 year-old single
mother of a 4 ½ year-old
handsome boy that lives
with me most of the time. I’m
5’8”, 138 lbs. I workout and
eat healthy. I have mediumlong
brown hair, brown eyes,
and my ethnicity is “Persian”/
Middle Eastern. I have a
master’s degree in systems
management and a B.S. in
Biochemistry from Georgia
State University. I work at a
MAY 2008 « PACIFICsandiego.com
digital media company as
a Senior Quality Engineer. I
was married for 5 years and
have been divorced for a
little over 2 years. I like creativity
and creative people.
I trust easily, but once that
trust and respect is gone, it’s
not coming back.
What’s important in a guy
that I would choose to
have a relationship with:
Physical attributes are
important, but beauty is
very subjective. I like to
wear high heels, so I prefer
if the guy is tall. I like to see
passion in his eyes and voice
and how he carries himself—
not talking just about lust or
love but passion for life and
passionate about his goals in
life. Successful in any shape
and form he defines success.
Respectful and friendly
with others. Respectful and
appreciative of my opinion,
even if he doesn’t agree.
Sharp dresser without overdoing
it (sense of style is very
important). Charisma without
seeming conceited. Athletic
without being a sport junkie.
Available and serious about
dating.
What I wouldn’t like: (Sorry
for sounding shallow)
Sport junkie; surfer dude;
preppy/nerdy personality;
bald-headed or wearing a
hair-piece; depressed or
having psychological issues
that need medical attention;
full of himself; player; married,
separated or recently
divorced.
I hope I’m being specific
enough! ;) Sorry for the long
list, but I’m pretty clear on
what I like and don’t like and
try to be very realistic in how
I describe myself and my
likings. Thanks a lot… I hope
it’s possible to find such
person! :)
meet adam
Adam owns and operates a gym. He’s in charge at work and
likes to call the shots in his personal relationships, too. Everywhere
Adam goes, so too goes Billy, a chubby, three-year-old
white mini poodle. The two are inseparable; at least they were
until Adam broke up with his girlfriend a few ago. Turns out
Billy belongs to the ex, so Adam is now minus two companions.
Upbeat about his newfound freedom, he contacted
PacificSD’s matchmakers. Here’s what he wrote:
Dear PacificSD,
I’m a big fan of your blind date stories and thought I’d drop a note
to share my philosophy on being single. Please note that this is not
a theory on dating or on how to be in a relationship. Instead, it is a
two-word philosophy that outlines how to have a good time with
friends, make new ones and meet beautiful women. The first and
more important word is “silliness.” Be willing to be silly. Take nothing
seriously when you’re out. Find the obvious absurdity of the
scene (every bar is a scene, and they’re all absurd) and make fun of
it, exaggerate it, create a lingo for it. Responsibility dominates the
workweek, but playtime is about being a kid… a silly kid.
Word two is “randomness.” Remaining open to randomness
means never taking the plan as law. Actually don’t even make a
plan. The best nights are unexpected and come from a willingness
to make yourself laugh, especially at yourself (i.e., being silly). Your
blind dates illustrate my point perfectly. I mean, how silly is it to
spend a night with someone you’ve never met? How seriously can
you take their opinion of you? Is there anything more random than
an evening where you just show up, meet a beautiful woman and
don’t even have to pay for anything?
LOVE
Pre-Date
Interviews
PacificSD calls Haleh and Adam to see how they’re feeling about the big
date, which begins later this evening at East Village Tavern & Bowl.
Haleh’s pre-date interview:
PacificSD: Describe yourself in three words.
Haleh: Positive, high-energy and caring.
Sometimes too much so.
PacificSD: Describe your perfect man in
three words.
Haleh: Robert De Niro. Just kidding.
High-energy, charismatic and caring. Truly,
truly caring.
PacificSD: Biggest turn-on?
Haleh: I would say that being real is the
biggest turn on for me. Most people just
front and it’s their ego talking. I don’t want
to get to know your ego, I want to get to
know you. I can’t stand pretentiousness or
people that try to be someone that they’re
not. When I meet some that’s real and
confident and comfortable in their own skin,
that’s the biggest turn on.
PacificSD: Biggest turn-off?
Haleh: My biggest turn-off is someone
who’s not emotionally intelligent. We have
the IQ system that rates people’s intelligence,
but it’s not typical for someone to
be emotionally intelligent at the same time.
I’m looking for a man who’s aware of other
people’s feelings, someone who cares and
is not aloof and conceited about how he
feels and what’s going on with his life.
PacificSD: What are your expectations for
tonight?
Haleh: Because you guys set this all up, I
expect him to be cool. I’m not expecting
to fall in love, though. I think love at first
sight is B.S. People confuse it with lust at
first sight. If you’re so into a person, and it’s
hot and crazy the first night you meet them,
it’ll probably die down as fast as it started.
So I believe that first you need a friendship
to grow, and you fall in love with a person
gradually. You don’t just randomly blink and
fall in love. I hope my date isn’t thinking that
he’s going to fall in love right away either.
PacificSD: What’s the best thing that could
happen tonight?
Haleh: That the guy’s fun and dressed
nice. It’s important the way a guy dresses;
it’s important because it says a lot about the
person, like if they’ve overdone it, versus if
they didn’t care and just threw something
together. I like a guy with a sense of style,
but without going overboard.
PacificSD: What’s the worst thing that
could happen?
Haleh: The guy is boring and gets intimidated.
He doesn’t know what to say and
uses cheesy lines. I can’t stand cheesy lines.
Adam’s pre-date interview:
PacificSD: Describe yourself
in three words.
Adam: Philosophical,
entrepreneurial and silly.
PacificSD: How are you feeling
about tonight?
Adam: Feelings? I don’t have any. I’m
a single guy that just got out of a relationship
after two-and-a-half years. I couldn’t
handle the pressure to take the relationship
to the next level, the pressure to get
married. That’s where she was coming
from and I couldn’t handle it. I just gave
up. Threw in the towel. I’m feeling-less.
I just want to have fun and have a good
time. If it’s cool, and it’s light, and we can
have fun together and have a good conversation,
then that’s perfect. If feelings
come around, like, you know, in 80, 90,
100 years from now, I’m down.
PacificSD: Feeling anxious? Oh, right, no
feelings. Are you able to discern
any sensation of anxiety?
Adam: I might get nervous, but I put
myself in a lot of stressful situations each
day. I’m responsible for a lot of things.
I try to keep things in perspective.
PacificSD: Describe your dream girl.
Adam: Over 5’7”, dark hair, athletic,
great ass. I’m a bubblebutt guy. Breasts,
I’ll take ‘em or leave ‘em, whatever, but if
she’s doesn’t have a great ass, it doesn’t
matter. And right now, I’m just really into
tall girls. She needs to be intelligent and
able to hold a conversation about many
things. I like a girl that’s educated. She
doesn’t have to have a college education
per se, just traveled and experienced
and witty. The smartest girls always have
a little bit of a smartass in them, and I’m
a complete smartass. I want a girl that
knows herself, that has an awareness
of who she is and of her spiritual side.
Someone who can have a conversation
about the meaning of life and her philosophy
on life. I’m a very driven person
and I want to hang out with a girl who has
something she’s striving for.
PacificSD: Any specific expectations?
Adam: I’m looking to have a good time
and great conversation and just have fun.
PacificSD: What’s the best thing that
could happen tonight?
Adam: We have a super good time
laughing, being silly, with great conversation
and good energy. That would be the
perfect thing.
PacificSD: What’s the worst thing that
could happen?
Adam: That I’m bored. No laughter, just
awkward silence, where you’re striving to
hold a conversation. Or if she slaps me.
LOVE
[If the shoe fits]
Haleh and Adam meet in a dark alley at East Village Tavern. They seem to
connect from the moment they lay their eyes on each other. Before they begin
to bowl, Adam drops to one knee to help Haleh change into bowling shoes.
Chivalrous? Yes. Foreboding? Only time will tell – it’s only 8:00 p.m.
While they bowl, Haleh and Adam enjoy delicious food from East Village Tavern’s
diverse menu, imagined by chef and co-owner, Kevin “The Food Dude”
Roberts. During warm-up rounds, Adam helps Haleh with her form, giving
verbal pointers, positioning her arms and gently touching her back. Things appear
to be heating up.
By the end of the tenth frame, though Haleh had jumped out to an early lead,
Adam finds his stride and takes the game. Final score: 147 to 89. Before they
change back into their civilian shoes, the two are split for mid-date debriefings.
she says...
When I first saw Adam, he reminded me of a guy I dated for a few years. His
demeanor… the way he talks… they look like they could be related. That’s a
good thing–I was just shocked. For a moment, I even thought PacificSD had
tricked me.
It’s going good so far. We’re hitting it off, and he wasn’t intimidated or weirded
out by the situation. I could feel his energy right away, and I was like, “Okay,
this is fine.” It seems like the more we talk, the more we have in common. We
both don’t eat right meat, we’ve read similar books, and we’ve both studied
Deepak Chopra and seen The Secret. At one point, I mentioned a concept
to Adam, and he responded with another quote from the same philosopher.
That’s very rare. It’s cool to meet someone like that, whether there’s a love
connection or not. And it’s funny, because I know that this all came about
because of the Law of Attraction; it’s all about your attitude and what type of
people you attract to your life.
I’m holding back a little bit, because I want to get to know more about him. If I
had to rate the level of attraction so far, I’d give it a seven, but it can grow the
more I get to know him. I think there’s a mutual attraction, but you’d have to
ask him. The rest of the night should be fun.
he says...
My first impression of Haleh was that she wasn’t a girl that I would approach in
a bar. She’s got this seriousness about her, and, at this stage in my life, I don’t
go up to girls that are serious. At first, she was sizing me up, and she didn’t
seem to be giving me the benefit of the doubt. But she warmed up a little bit
during the game—she stopped crossing her arms and taking that half-step
back—and now she’s easy to talk to. I’m having fun.
Haleh has a very high consciousness about herself, both spiritually and physically.
And she’s beautiful, with amazing hair and really pretty feet. And she’s
absolutely intelligent. She’s well read in philosophy, and she’s totally cool. I
just hope she’ll let go a little bit more and that she decides to roll with it and
have more fun and just be in the moment. I think she’s looking for the moment
instead of just being in it. And I think she could be silly—she’s not quite there
yet, but she’s got the potential.
I don’t know how tonight’s going to go, and I don’t want to know. I don’t want
it to be any certain way. At this moment, all I care about is having a good
conversation and being silly and going with the flow. My level of attraction to
her is in the seven-to-eight range. I can’t tell if she’s attracted to me, but I think
she probably is at least somewhat.
[ Basic Instinct ]
Off to a great start, Haleh and Adam leave East Village
Tavern and head over to the neighboring BASIC Urban
Kitchen & Bar. During the leisurely stroll, Adam points
out buildings, stars, people. Haleh laughs, and the two
already seem like a happy couple. BASIC’s
giant roll-up glass doors reveal that the place is
packed, the mood electric. Haleh and Adam are
ushered to their private table in BASIC’s industrialvibed
VIP lounge. After their thin crust pizza arrives,
the daters are finally given some privacy. PacificSD
calls the next day to see how the big night ended up.
she says...
Bowling at East Village Tavern was a lot of fun, and Basic was great. They
were playing cool old school hip-hop, the staff was friendly, and I liked the
ambiance for sure. Adam and I both like artichoke and sundried tomatoes,
so we ordered a pizza with that plus chicken and mushrooms.
Things turned out way better than I expected. We were talking on an intellectual/spiritual
level, but it wasn’t all philosophical. We talked about our
likes and dislikes, our families, backgrounds, education. It surprised me
how much we were on the same wavelength.
We stayed at Basic until 1:30 a.m. or so, a little before they closed down.
After that, we walked back to my place, and Adam took a cab home. That
was around two o’clock. Was there a goodnight kiss? I don’t want to share
that, but something happened, and it was nice. Adam’s a good looking
guy, and there was definitely a spark, more than just a friendly attraction.
I definitely would like to go out with Adam again. I think he’s on the same
page, but I don’t know for sure. I don’t know if I gave off the energy or the
impression that I am interested in dating, because we didn’t really talk
about that. I gave him my number but didn’t take his. I’m not sure what the
future holds – I kind of wanted to leave it up to him.
he says...
I’m not really a big pizza guy, but the food at Basic was really good. And I
liked the eclectic kind of retro-rock the DJ was spinning. I would definitely
go back there and to East Village Tavern. Bowling was a blast.
At first, I had the impression that maybe Haleh was the kind of person who
makes you earn trust, but it turns out that she’s like me—she starts out
with a 100% trust factor, and if you screw up, you lose it. That was refreshing.
I like hanging out with people who are confident and have a level of
trust in other people.
We had a very high-level conversation about a lot of different topics.
Haleh has so many appealing qualities; she’s definitely a brilliant person,
and she’s a very sexy woman. Put those two things together, and I’m very
attracted.
This was my first blind date, and it was awesome. I doubt that a lot of blind
dates turn out like this one did. It was super fun, silly and random. You
can’t have a better night than that. Was there a goodnight kiss? Are you
kidding? We made out at Basic, then left there at around 1:30. I walked her
home, gave her a big kiss goodnight and got her phone number. It was
one of the best dates of my life. I already called her for a second date.
CONCLUSION: Finding the right guy for Haleh took some serious searching, but the hard work paid off. Haleh was looking for serious; Adam wanted
everything to be “silly and random.” In the end, the two seem to have met in the middle, saving PacificSD from throwing another gutter ball. Four
days later, Haleh joined Adam for dinner at Downtown’s famed Oceanaire Seafood Room. A weekend getaway has already been planned. Strike!
