Hockey:
Medals up for Grabs as
Teams Progress to Finals
It’s finals day at the hockey with all four-age divisions vying for the title of the 2008 Pacific
School Games Hockey Champions.
New South Wales will feature in at least three finals today, qualifying in the U12 Boys and
Girls plus U16 Girls division. Overnight their U16 Boys team played Malaysia in the semi final
for their chance to make the final and a 100% finals record for their state.
Meeting NSW in the U12 age category finals are Queensland in the Boys and Victoria in the
Girls. At the time of printing the second semi final for the U16 Girls was into the second half
with Queensland leading Western Australia 2-1. In the second semi final for the U16 Boys,
Victoria played Queensland last night at 8pm.
The international teams have made a big impression on the Australian teams here at the
hockey, with the Japanese girls going down in a nail-biting 2-1 final round game against
NSW, to narrowly miss the medal playoffs. Despite the gut wrenching loss, the Japanese
side still managed to hold together their emotions for the traditional post-game photo shoot,
which has been a common sight after each of their matches.
In the U12 Girls, a presentation was made to the Singaporean team by the NSW U12 Girls
before their last game, of fully sized shin guards, after it was noted the international team
were playing in minkey sized guards. A dozen balls were also donated to the side from the
Hockey PSG organising committee.
It’s been a great week of hockey, with a great amount of sportsmanship and skill displayed by
all teams throughout the four age divisions. The future of hockey is looking promising! A huge
thankyou to everyone who has been supporting the teams as well as to the generosity of all
the volunteers who have given up their time in making this event as great as it has been!
Dignitaries visit Divers on
Diving: Day 6 of competition
On this final day of the 2008 PSG it is ‘medals time’ in all Basketball competitions.
The much anticipated game between the Under 18 girls of Queensland and Victoria in
the Under 18 Girls lived up its exciting billing before the game. By the end of the first
quarter the crowd was bellowing encouragement to their girls.
At half time Victoria had established a six point lead, leading 36 points to 30. But the
strong confident girls of the Queensland team were not going to give up without a fight.
The girls did not disappoint their audience fighting for every possession and ball
throughout the last quarter. Victoria eventually won the game by 11 points and the crowd
was more then happy to jump out of their seats and cheer them on for a great victory.
The Gold Medal games are as follows:
8.45 am 12 & Under Girls VIC. vs SA
8.45 am Disability NSW vs VIC
10.20 am 12 & Under Boys VIC vs NSW
10.30 am Wheelchair NSW vs VIC
12.30 pm 18 & Under Girls NSW vs VIC
2.30 pm 18 & Under Boys NSW vs ACT
A great week of basketball that was enjoyed by all. Congratulations and thanks to all
participants for the ‘PSG Spirit’ in which all games were played. You are all winners!
Brilliant 200m Sprinting a Feature of Day 6
ACT’s Melissa Breen and Thailand’s Suppachai Chindee
displayed rare brilliance by these champion school athletes in
winning their respective 200m Finals today.
Chindee’s 21.09 secs run was well inside former Australian
Olympian Paul Greene’s PSG record of 21.46 secs, which is
incidentally had been broken earlier in the day by Sydney’s Jake
Hammond. This final was a cracker with place-getters in order
after Chindee beat Jake Hammond of NSW, while WA’s Aaron
Oliver was in third place just ahead of the ACT’s fast finishing
Brendan Matthews.
In the 100m Finals for the younger age groups, Victoria’s Ashleigh
Whittaker displayed a beautifully smooth technique in breaking
Olympian Nicole Boegman’s 1982 PSG record of 11.91 by 0.8 secs
in winning the Girl’s 100m for 15 years in 11.83 secs (wind plus 1.9
secs). NSW’s Ella Nelson also set a new record of 12.01 secs in the
14 years Girls 100m.
With the excellent conditions being provided by the “weather
gods” and the high quality of the athletes on show, it is probably
that this exceptional record breaking will continue unabated until
the end tomorrow at 5.30 when the curtain closes on the 2008 PSG
Track and Field program.
Swimming
Records Continue to Tumble at Pool
Some of the highlights of Session 1 included Queensland winning the 14yrs
medley relay in PSG record time, SA swimmer Mikkayla Maselli- Sheridan
setting yet another record in the 13-14 yrs 200 Freestyle and 12Yr old Thai
swimmers setting records in 50 free and 50m backstroke.
Session 2 saw an amazing 7 records broken during the heats with Shuai Wang
smashing the 200m breaststroke by 6 seconds in the first heat. Other records
were set by Darthea Clysdale from Queensland in the 15yrs 200 freestyle, Yi Fang
from China in the 15yrs 200 freestyle, Justin James 16yrs 200 free, Elizabeth
Forbes from Queensland in the 15yrs 50 breaststroke, Rebecca Kemp 16yrs in
the 50m breast stroke and Hayden McEvoy in the 17yrs 50m breaststroke.
Records continued to fall in the final session of the day but the real contest
was outside the pool- in the stands amongst the supporters. PNG, Tasmanian,
Kiwi and WA supporters were out to prove that Friday’s Pacific Daily swimming
report wasn’t quite right. Out came the Haka from the Kiwis while other teams
tried to out -do each other. The final day of competition promises to uncover
more future stars of the pool in what has been an exception week of racing
with records tumbling at the 8th Pacific School Games.
The Organising Committee head to the pool to survey the results
of 2 years of hard work.
The divers were fortunate enough to have several dignitaries visit the pool
to watch their skills yesterday. Ron Burns the General manager of the 2008
PSG, Ken Rogers, President of School Sport Australia, Jane McCarty, 2008
PSG Administration Manager, Annette Hrasymiv, Chair of ACT School Sport
and the PSG steering committee, Eric Chalmers, a member of the steering
and finance committee, Chris Nunn, Pacific School Games ambassador,
Tim Gavel, ABC sports commentator and local hero of the Australian of
the Year Awards and Trish Wigens from Meta Design witnessed some
spectacular diving during their time at the pool.
The Victorian boys were once again dominant with James Connor,
Hamish Browning and Theodore Petrakos in the 13 years 1 metre and
Darcy Taylor, Angus McLardie and Theodore Scordas leading the way
in the 14 years 3 metre division. The NZ team had an exciting day with
Ollie Armstrong-Scott taking gold in the 15 years 3 metre and Jacob
Coutie the bronze. Lexi Mills won the 16 years girls 1 metre with team
mate Brigitta Cooper picking up the silver ahead of Brooke Wheeler
from Victoria. Fiona Cameron also from NZ won the 11 years girls 3
metre. Macau diver Wai Hou Ng collected his 2nd gold medal in the 10
years boys 1 metre event.
The final day of competition will feature the girls 17-19 years 10 metre
platform which will start at 9.30am this morning.
