Office Report by Angela Newton - OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008 

I am pleased to announce the appointment of our 

new Office Manager, Mr Ron Tidyman. Ron joined us 

during the frantic preparations for the National Show. 

He brings 25 years of management experience and a 

strong customer focus to the Association. Please 

welcome Ron when you have a chance to talk to him 

on the phone or if you call into the office. 

To help assist with the 

backlog of paperwork and 

improve our financial reporting 

we have employed a qualified 

Accountant Debbie Wright. 

Debbie has made some huge 

inroads into the receipting 

workload and we estimate it will 

be 4-6 weeks and the backlog 

will be under control.

Kim Hocking has also been 

employed on a part-time basis 

to bring the Points System up to 

date. She has sorted all the 

points that have been received 

in the office to date and scored 

those accumulated up till 

March. She will be entering 

them in the database on a 

month by month basis so you 

should see them filtering 

through shortly. 

Just a reminder that the 

points earned at the National 

Show will be entered as at 31 

July 2008 otherwise they would 

automatically roll over to the 

2008/2009 show year. This will 

apply to any show such as the 

NPHA which was rescheduled 

due to EI.

RULE CHANGES from the September Board of Directors Meeting 

Proposed Rule Change – Effective 01/08/09 

Rule (1) COMMITTEES AND PORTFOLIOS 

Insert: Hall of Fame 

Into the list of possible committees and/or portfolios. 

Rule to read 

1. COMMITTEES AND PORTFOLIOS 

All committees/portfolios shall consist of not less than 

three members. In making appointments to the 

committee/portfolio the Board of Directors shall appoint 

members of the committee for one (1) year. Any vacancy 

in the committee, other than by expiration of term, shall 

be filled by the President with the advice and consent 

of the Executive Committee. The Chairperson of each 

Committee/Portfolio shall be appointed annually by the 

Board Of Directors as soon as possible after the election 

of the Directors and shall be published in the Australian 

Paint Horse Journal after the annual general meeting. 

The possible committees and/or portfolios, that need 

not all be operational at one time at present are:

• Breed Improvement 

• Budget 

• Constitution 

• Fund Raising

Where no committee or portfolio has been appointed, 

or not in existence at a particular time, then the Board of 

Directors may act as the necessary committee or portfolio 

and perform the same functions thereof.

Futurity Report:

A complete list of all horses nominated for the 2009 Futurities 

has been posted on the website on the Events/Futurities page. 

Please check this out to make sure we have the correct information 

recorded. Progress payment forms have been sent out to all 

members who nominated horses however they are also available 

to download from the website. 

The next progress payment is due on 31st October. Late entry is 

permitted (except for weanling) but you will pay double fees for 

all overdue payments. 

The 2008 Futurities were a great success even though run at the 

end of Winter. We will have a full report of payouts in the next 

issue. 2008 winners and placegetters can be found in our National 

Show Report.

Well what a great National’s I trust everyone had a good time, 

it was fabulous to see so many new faces along with all the 

regular ones. 

With EI behind us it was great to see 

we had more horse than the previous 

year. A big thanks goes out to all the 

workers that made it all possible, with 

Don and his Team looking after the pen 

and Carol and her Team looking after 

the office and merchandising tent we 

had a pretty smooth run. We have 

taken on board the feedback we 

received at the show and will be 

meeting with Dubbo Council to raise 

some concerns but all in all it was a 

pretty good show. Now we will start 

planning for the next Nationals……no 

rest as they say!! 

I’d like to formally welcome Ron 

Tidyman to our Association, Ron is our 

new Office Manager and is settling in 

well. Ron brings a wealth of 

experience and skills which are 

already paying dividends for us. You 

might also have heard another new 

voice if you’ve called in, that would be 

Tammy Anforth who is our other new 

team member. Tammy is also making 

her mark within the team. As always 

Amy is still with us putting in the hard 

yards to get us back on track after the 

Nationals. Another big thank you goes 

out to the Office Team who have been 

working very hard to get up to date 

and while it has been quite a 

challenging time they are making great 

head way so we hope to have caught 

up with the backload of work in the 

very near future and I thank everyone 

for their patients. 

I’d personally like to thank everyone for 

their support, I wasn’t expecting to be 

in this position but the task has been 

made a lot easier for me by the huge 

amount of support I have received. I 

look forward to seeing the Association 

continue to move forward and grow in 

the coming months.

Congratulations to Carmel Shearer of Victoria, 

winner of the 2008 Amateur Owner Foal Raffle. 

We understand that Carmel has been ill in hospital and the news 

that she was the winner was a welcome surprise. As Carmel was 

not at the show, Kyle and Kristy Mobberly kindly transported the 

filly down to Victoria for her. 

Thanks also to Kingston Park Stud and the 

Manteit family for donating the filly. 

Congratulations on 

the New Arrival... 

Congratulations to our wonderful Paint Horse 

Journal editor, Tracey McClurg on the birth of 

her daughter, Bailee Kate on 30th July 2008 

weighing 3.470kg. Tracey is certainly made of stern 

stuff, she produced the last edition of the Paint 

Horse Journal while being 8½ months 

pregnant and then 

promptly went off 

and produced a 

lovely baby daughter 

as soon as the PHJ 

was in the mail! 

According to Tracey, 

Baillee is doing well 

and behaving herself 

beautifully.

Portfolio REPORT - by Vicki Hume 

[Regional Clubs] 

With the National Show run and won I would like to 

take this opportunity to sincerely thank all those 

affiliated members who attended. A big thank you 

also goes to those who participated behind the scenes 

to put forward another great event showcasing our 

beautiful paints. A huge debt of thanks to Craig 

Dengate for his tireless effort in what can only be 

described as one of the most difficult periods leading 

up to the National Paint Show. 

As you are aware, our association is 

also experiencing a very difficult time 

with membership renewals down from 

previous years and the added burden 

of fluctuating office staff since the 

resignation of two office managers in 

less than a year. I would ask that you 

continue with your patience and 

encouragement to the girls and now 

Ron, as they are doing as much as they 

can to bring us up to date. 

On a sad note, it is with disappointment 

to learn of the resignation of Jeffrey Hall 

as President. I would like to thank 

Jeffrey for his time in the Chair and 

wish both he and Lee Ann well for the 

future without the constant pressure of 

Board duties to attend to. I would also 

like to take this time for those of you to 

take a moment to reflect on who you 

would like to lead the Board into the 

next term. Remember your input as 

members determines who will guide 

us through the next months. 

Our small but dedicated team put in a 

lot of after hours work at no cost to the 

Association to provide the best 

possible service to you, our members. 

We have many thoughts and processes 

put in place over the next months to 

ensure that things will come back on 

an even keel and we can once again 

experience the great service 

expected from our office staff. 

On a brighter note Spring is finally 

upon us and what a wonderful time of 

year when we experience the joy of 

bringing new life into the word and 

know that we have in some small way 

played a part in that creation. Our 

babies are always a welcome sight; as 

paint breeders, we not only have the 

expectation of a colt of a filly but “will it 

be a coloured baby”. I wish all 

breeders well for this season, limited 

though it may be for this year. 

With spring also comes the full swing 

of the Show season for many. I know 

that our affiliates are looking forward to 

the new season with vigour and would 

like to congratulate your small band of 

committees who work tirelessly to 

strive to offer a well run show for their 

members. It is a thankless task which 

usually falls to the same few people, so 

please remember this and offer 

assistance where you can, even if it is 

locking or unlocking a gate or helping 

to pack away the trail equipment at the 

end of the day. 

On another note, I would invite 

affiliated clubs to send in any articles 

or photos of paints doing anything 

other than showing. I think sometimes 

too much emphasis has been placed 

on showing and not enough of the 

deserved recognition for other 

disciplines particularly in areas of 

working cow events or even the trusty 

pony club mount. 

Thank you all for your hard work in 

promoting the paint horse and the 

Association in all you do. I look forward 

to hopefully catching up with you in the 

near future.

Portfolio REPORT - by Lee Wear 

[Amateur Owner] 

What a year so far we’ve had the State Shows. 

The Amateur Owner World Show trip and the 

Nationals…. actioned packed to say the least. 

With EI out of the way it was full steam 

ahead for our shows. I made my way 

down to South Australia for another 

great State show, if you’ve never been I 

recommend it. The South Australians 

put on a great show and are a lot of fun. 

Murph made his début running the 

barrels, he ran a very fast 29 seconds 

and while we waited for the other 

competitors to run, my trusty strapper 

Wendy mentioned that she thought I’d 

be able to beat Murph. Letting no 

challenge go unattempted I took off my 

chaps and had a go. Now if you haven’t 

met me or don’t know me very well I’ll 

put you in the picture, I am no Usain 

Bolt but having said that I ran a 26 

seconds. Beat my own horse by 3 

seconds…..as you may have guessed I 

haven’t been offered any big money 

for Murph as a coloured runner. 

We missed out on the Victorian State 

show as we were running out of leave 

but we hear it was quite a show. We are 

yet to get to Queensland although it is 

on our list. 

With showing just under way we 

boarded a plane to Texas to check out 

the World Show. It was a great trip 

which you can read more about in my 

Texas Report. If you haven’t been, save 

and go, you’ll not regret it. 

Back for a few weeks then it was on to 

the Nationals to showcase all of our 

bargain buys from Texas. The Nationals 

were very different this year seeing the 

return to the Expo centre arena. It took 

a couple of days to settle in to the trains 

shunting but once that was done we 

were underway for another fun show. 

Congratulations to everyone who 

came and had a go, I had a great time 

so I trust everyone else did. 

Suzanne Egan 

on Wizz’s Ringer 

A big congratulations goes to Suzanne 

Egan who won High Point Amateur of 

the show. 

We held our annual A/O meeting 

where we discussed a range of topics 

which included the idea of spreading 

out highpoint awards rather than one 

saddle for the highest point earner. It 

was generally thought that because we 

all as a group raise the funds for these 

awards that we should try spreading 

the awards out so that more amateur’s 

get an opportunity to be rewarded for 

their efforts. Ideas for spreading the 

awards around included awarding for 

the A/O high point halter horse which 

would be split from the A/O high point 

performance horse. I am happy to add 

and take on board any more feedback 

you wish to put forward on this topic so 

if you do want to comment please 

email me at paint.girl@live.com . Once 

I have all the feedback I will print the 

award structure in the next journal. 

There were lots of other really great 

ideas that were tossed around and I 

will work my way through the list as 

time permits but the big news I do 

have is that we have State Reps again 

this year to help with the work load and 

give you a more local voice.

Texas2008 -part.1. 

Well it was a long time since the idea was first floated to the day we boarded 

the plane but when it arrived we were ready. The Amateurs were ready to 

hit Texas and the 2008 World Show, we just hoped they were ready for us. 

Roxanne Lowe, Mel Hogan and myself were all excited to be heading off, 

so cashed up and ready for adventure, we boarded the plane. 

rROXANNE had never flown before so after her initial 

panic she was good, luckily she is easily distracted so as 

long as I could keep her entertained she was going to be 

fine. This was made easy with the in flight movies. The 

change from Qantas to American Airlines is a noticeable 

one and it was made worse as we were all split up, although 

this did give us a chance to chat with the locals. Mel was 

taken aback…she felt a little cheated that Texas wasn’t a 

desert that should have look like something out of a 

western, this led to a whole discussion on serial killers as 

this was the latest reference material we had seen at the 

box office “No Country Old Men”, This cracked up our fellow 

passengers being that we were discussing it across the 

cabin because we didn’t get seats together. The young man 

sitting between Mel and myself was amused since we came 

from Australia, seems news travels and South Australia is 

also well documented on film. Anyway with the air travel out 

of the way it was time to hit the roads. 

Driving in Texas was going to be fun this fact was 

established as soon as we left the carpark……but we had 

a secret weapon…..our GPS ”the mole” so named as she 

knew all the hidden ways to get to anywhere we wanted to. 

We headed to the hotel to plot out our trip ahead, yes we 

hadn’t a detailed plan just some ideas and a handful of 

brochures along with a few phone numbers. 

Day one took us from Dallas to Waco so we could tick 

the first two things off our list which was the Rodeo Pawn 

shop and the Texas Rangers Museum…yes home of Chuck 

Norris. On the way we stopped to shop which helped to 

make our seven seater Dodge get that homey feel. When 

we reached Waco we found it was too late so we found a 

hotel and headed out to eat, then back to the hotel for a 

swim……who would have thought Texas would be so hot, 

other than anyone who has been there of course. 

Day two and we checked out the Rangers Museum and 

the rodeo Pawn shop, Museum was great but this is where 

we found that Texas seemed to have a funny slant which 

was to become a theme for all the historic places we visited. 

It seems that no matter what the event the biggest part of

any event is the way in which anyone was killed. We 

learned a lot here including the fact that Texas was stolen 

from Mexico, a fact we found most in Texas refuse to 

believe or acknowledge. The pawn shop was an eye opener 

you could buy anything from a western saddle to a double 

barrel shot gun…..pistol if your looking for something more 

concealable. Waco was also where we found a white cocky 

that had a Texan accent, although when I said he sounded 

American I was quickly corrected so I knew it was Texan not 

American. With all this out of the way we headed off to San 

Antonio. 

San Antonio was quite the challenge to say the least, this 

was where we found the roads beat us for the first time and 

where we booked into the worst motel in Texas, which was 

also the motel we checked out of after opening the door 

and not even putting a step inside the room. We fought 

back and beat the roads system to stay right across the 

street from the Alamo. Here we were able to wander the 

canals in amongst the party atmosphere…very Mexican to 

say the least. We ate dinner upstairs in an open air 

restaurant overlooking the party makers then we wandered 

down to get on a barge for a tour around the canals. It’s was 

an excellent way to see the city, we capped off the night 

with a horse and carriage ride, the carriage was lit up like a 

Christmas tree….very cool way to take in the sights. Back 

to the hotel and a good nights sleep before we would return 

to the Alamo. 

Alamo…interesting, pretty and yes those Texans told us 

all about who got killed where, how and what it did to them 

in the way of death….gotta love the commitment to detail. 

We did try and clarify the fact that Texas was stolen from 

the Mexicans but the tour guide just seemed to dismiss us 

for some reason…anyway it was time to pack the dodge

Despite being the third largest country in Western Europe, Sweden has 

a low population density with about 84% of the population living in urban 

areas. Surprisingly parts of Sweden offer a temperate climate due to the 

Gulf Stream, unlike many other countries on the same latitude. However, 

in the mountains of northern Sweden a sub-arctic climate predominates. 

Temperatures from the north to the south vary dramatically. Winter in the 

north can reach lows of -19 C whilst the south sees average lows in winter 

of only -1. As you can see, keeping horses can offer challenges in this 

European wonderland. 

Although Sweden has had coloured horses for centuries, 

it was not until around 1990 that the first registered Paint 

Horses were imported into the country. Horses were imported 

from both Germany and the USA and in only a few years 

were making their mark and winning at the European 

Championships. The business of Paint horses was progressing 

well, until 1999 when some recommendations were put to 

the Government authorities regarding the overo coloured 

Paint horses. 

There are many laws regarding the keeping and breeding 

of animals in Sweden, effecting owners of many different 

animals including horse breeders. The Swedish Paint Horse 

Association, takes it on board to ensure that people interested 

in Paint Horses are advised of the many rules and laws that 

they may come across, particularly when it comes to the 

breeding of Paint Horses. The laws are governed by the 

Swedish Animal Health Department and the Swedish Horse 

Board. Horses must be checked for genetic defects as well as 

disease and other traits that can be passed on to their 

offspring – things such as HERDA, PSSM, GBED and OLW are 

on the testing list for horses in Sweden. 

Sussi Elfsberg, committee member of the Swedish Paint 

Horse Association explains that at that time, there was not the 

information available, nor the understanding of the overo gene

and the way in which it acts. The Swedish Government put in 

place rules to prohibit the breeding of overo (positive) horses, 

regardless of what they were being bred to. In Sweden, it is 

prohibited to breed together animals that’s offspring would be 

genetically defective or suffer from an affliction that can be 

avoided. Some members within the Swedish Association 

lobbied the authorities to explain the actions of the gene and 

that a Lethal White foal could not be born if an overo positive 

horse was bred to an overo negative horse. The members also 

put forward the case that other breeds also carry this gene, 

but the regulations were put in place for Paint horses only. Only 

Paint horses that tested N/N to the overo gene could be used 

for breeding. This had a devastating effect on the Paint Horse 

breeding programs in Sweden for many years. Overo stallions, 

such as Sussi’s “Whatafrecklynxkent” could not breed mares in 

Sweden, so were forced to travel to other European countries, 

Sussi’s stallion covering mares in Denmark and Belgium. 

After 8 years of hard work and lobbying of the Swedish 

Board of Trade and the European Commission, now in 2008, 

the Swedish Paint Horse owners can breed Overo horses 

again, but only to an overo negative partner. It has taken a long 

time for people to have an understanding of the overo colour 

and the overo gene in respect of Overo Lethal White foals. 

There are Paint horse competitions in Sweden, though some 

owners travel through out Europe to show their horses, many 

competing in the European Championships, held in Germany 

each year. As young as the breed is in Sweden, there are 

already 5 horses that can boast being double APHA 

Champions – Open and Amateur, while only having very few 

horses compared to other countries like Germany and Italy. 

“Sporty Danny” a black frame overo owned by Annika Muller 

Hansen and imported from the USA has certainly been a 

great ambassador for Sweden, winning European Zone 

Championships each year from 2000 through to 2005, now 

retired as a breeding stallion his progeny should soon be 

following in his path. 

Frecka Paints, operated by Sussi Elfsberg, is a small ranch 

located in Aled, in the south of Sweden. Despite working a full 

time job, Sussi is proud of her small ranch and tells that she 

has exhibited her stallion “Whatafrecklynxkent” (1996 sorrel 

overo) to win the APHA Zone Award for Europe at only 3 years 

of age. “Frecka” has been campaigned at the European 

Championships winning Gold in Amateur Halter, Silver in Trail 

and Bronze in Open Halter, Amateur Western Pleasure and 

Open Hunter Under Saddle, he can also boast winning the 

German Western Pleasure Futurity and to have been rated the 

highest points given by the Swedish Horse Board under the 

Breeders Stallion test. Stallions are tested for correct 

movement, angulation, correctness and straightness of legs, 

type to breed, their bloodlines and then finally any show 

record they may have. As breeding of overo horses was 

prohibited in Sweden when Frecke was a young stallion, his 

progeny form 1999 and 2000 (conceived before the laws were 

put in place) have performed well for him – Whata Freck Boon 

being the APHA European Zone winner for Amateur in 2006 

and for both Open and Amateur in 2007. Frecke has been 

listed as the number 2 sire in Europe for Halter and 

Performance offspring. 

A recent import has turned some heads – Colour Your Dash 

a 2006 sorrel overo stallion – double registered Thoroughbred 

and Paint Horse, presently in training for the track will also be 

seen in the show ring. This stallion traces back to such great 

thoroughbreds as Nureyev and Northern Dancer. The same 

owner has a double registered APHA / Jockey Club black 

frame overo mare who has recently produced a black overo 

colt foal – the first of his kind in Sweden. 

With the changes to government legislation, breeders now 

have a greater choice. Add this to some recent imports to 

extend the gene pool and Sweden will be a force to be 

reckoned with in the Paint Horse world. ✪

PHAA YOUTH PORTFOLIO

l Youth Report l 

Well what a busy couple of months, we’ve had the World 

Show and the Nationals and I don’t know about you all 

but I’ve had a great time. 

The Paint World Show was a great experience which I’m sure 

you can all read about in the report from Stacey Bentley who 

was our Youth reporter. The Team had a great time and we 

cheered long and loud for the girls. As you can see from the 

photos the support crew was ready to “bring it” on 

competition day which was great as it matched the Team who 

was already bringing it. I wont spoil any of the report with the 

finer details but the girls had a great time and represented us 

well. It was great to see our Team do so well and I can only 

encourage you to work hard if you think you would like to be 

part of the next team. A big thank you goes out to Lee Ann 

and Jeff Hall for once again doing a great job with the Team 

and all of the great connections within the USA along with 

the APHA. I think I speak for everyone when I say we had a 

fantastic time!

still a whole lot of 

fun. We had our 

traditional pancake 

night which was a 

huge success, it 

saw a production 

line of pancakes 

making their way 

out into the crowd.

It was great to see a whole 

heap of new faces mixed in with the regulars and our Youth 

meeting this year was well attended and it came up with 

some new ideas which we will try and work on for the future. 

I’d like to thank Victoria Egan and Samantha Graham for 

joining forces with Kristy Trigg and myself in the Team 

Penning, we showed that with good communication and a 

heap of yelling you can Team Pen without a painted pony. 

Congratulations goes to all the youth who competed I was 

so pleased to see how much work you had all put in. Special 

congratulations goes to highpoint winners Stacey Bentley 

as junior youth and Sarah Bourke as senior youth. 

We also had two special 

awards this year which 

were donated by Jack 

Abbott who has been 

a long time supporter 

of the Paint Horse 

Association. These 

awards were handed 

out as encouragement 

awards and were won by 

William Hupp and Emily 

Hill, two of our up and 

coming stars of 

tomorrow. 

All in all I think we all had 

a great time so much so 

that we will do it again 

in seven months time.

points towards getting one step closer to the World Youth 

Australian Team 2010!

That familiar key word ‘Dubbo’ 

brought our attention around to 

Samantha Graham and her family. 

From that point on it was the 

beginning of a wonderful lifetime 

experience for six excited girls. 

Everyone gathered at the foyer of the Sydney Airport 

Mercure Hotel on 15th June,2008. Soon our arms 

were piled with Australia Team Shirts and Caps, 

Aussie Singlets and Caps, our Bluedog sponsored 

sleeveless shirts and jeans, Aussie accessories and 

best of all we were presented with Team Belt Buckles. 

It was an early start the next morning (of which we had 

many more) to the Sydney International Airport. With 

help from Jeff and Lee Ann Hall we negotiated through 

the check-in systems and customs without losing anybody 

from the group of more than 20 Youth and Supporters. 

Then there was the 13 and a half hour long flight to Los 

Angeles. 

We arrived in America at 6:00am, and caught the shuttle 

bus to the Wyndham Hotel, Anaheim. To help us adjust 

to US time we needed to stay up until that night, so 

we took a guided tour of Hollywood, and had dinner at 

a Medieval Tournament. The tour guide said we were 

the quietest mob he had ever taken as everyone was 

nodding off. 

Next day we were off to Disneyland! This was awesome, 

but the lines were incredibly long. There was so much to 

do and see, we watched an amazing fireworks display over 

the Fairytale Castle, and eventually headed back to the 

Hotel at 12:00pm. 

We went back to LA Airport to catch our flight to Dallas- 

Fort Worth. It was absolute chaos. After we checked in 

we had to go outside to line up, to come back inside to get 

through customs. After being at the Airport for more 

than three hours we only just made it to our flight. 

The Hire Cars were picked up after arriving at Fort 

Worth. We then travelled in our mini bus on the wrong 

side of the road to what we are used to, to the Extended 

Stay Hotel which became our home for the next few 

weeks. 

Once we settled in we bought food for breakfast at the 

Target Superstore across the Road, noticing some 

differences in American eating habits. The next few days 

were full on as we got ready to compete, studying for the 

Hippology Test and attended the AjPHA Awards Dinner. 

We met the people who donated horses for the Youth 

Teams Tournament, and helped out around there stalls.

western pleasure 

There was last minute shopping for outfits, and a practise 

session with the horses before our competition in the 

afternoon. Everyone performed well with Tash Smith 

taking home a 1st in the Showmanship, and Samantha 

Graham collecting 8th place in Barrel Race. After the 

competition we entered the Youth Teams Tournament 

Knowledge Relay, were the team placed 2nd. 

By this time our first sleep-in was most enjoyable, we 

didn’t have to get up until 8 o’clock. We then had to get 

our costumes and props ready for the YTT Parade of 

Teams. The theme was “Paint the Stars” so we literally 

painted stars, choreographing it in with some dancing to 

the song “Land Down Under”. The judges thought it was 

awesome, and placed us 2nd. This gave us 6th overall in 

the YTT competition. 

We later met members of the countries competing in the 

Youth World Games for a Mexican Dinner. The next day 

all the teams toured Purina Mills and McNeil Ventures (a 

halter horse ranch). 

There were two 30 minute practice sessions for the 

youth competing in the World Games before their day 

of competition. The Australian team members again 

performed well with Lisa Gant placing 7th in the Trail, 

Rebecca Gant placed 3rd in the Western Horsemanship, 

Samantha Graham placed 5th in the Reining, and Victoria 

Egan placing 2nd in the Showmanship giving Australia 4th 

place overall against France, Netherlands, USA, Canada, 

Germany and Sweden. 

WELL DONE EVERYONE! 

An early start again saw us back to the Will Rogers 

Colosseum for the Youth Judging Contest. We did not 

participate in the reasoning section which made us 

ineligible for any awards, but received a special mention 

for our Judging results as Australia gained 93%. 

Kids Day was the 28th of June. Australia volunteered to 

help out and was given the job of leading the very patient 

horses used for pony rides. Any child could attend Kids 

Day and were treated to Pony Rides, Face Painting, Stick 

Horse Making and Paint Horse Freebies as a way of 

promoting the Association to the general public of 

Fort Worth. 

Australia joined Craig Dengate and Karen Lonski to watch 

and cheer their stallion ‘Magnificent Touchdown to win 

Reserve World Champion 3 Year Old Stallion. 

There were a couple of other functions that the Youth 

and Team Supporters attended during the world show. 

After nearly two and a half weeks it was time to say 

goodbye to the World Championship Show and friends 

they had met during that time. 

The rest of the time at Fort Worth was filled with 

shopping, riding the roller coasters at Six Flags 

Amusement Park, floating down the Guadalupe River on a 

tyre tube and visiting Fossil Gate Farms, Diamond 2 Be 

Stud, a Tennessee Walking Horse Ranch, Tom McCutchen 

Reining Horses and Earnest Wilson’s Ranch. 

It was certainly a busy fun filled time thanks to Jeff and 

Lee Ann’s expertise. Everyone’s bags were bulging on the 

trip home, and there was a lot more sleep had by all on 

the flight back across the Pacific Ocean.

stallion owners regarding payments of any and all costs associated 

with the service, e.g: agistment, veterinary treatment, feeds, farriery,

• If multiple bids are received for a stallion service on the same day all 

those bids will go into a draw to select the successful bidder. 

The PHAA does not warrant a live foal guarantee. Stallion owners are at liberty to enforce their own

• Tasmania inaugural High Point Awards... 

The Performance Paint Horse Association 

of Tasmania held its inaugural High Point 

Awards night on the 2nd August 2008, at 

the Launceston Riverside Hotel. 

It was a wonderful evening, with master-of-ceremonies 

our P.P.H.A.T. President, Mr. Malcolm Hume. It was 

quite an emotional night, with one of our strongest 

supporters - Mr. Greg Boon - passing away in the 

weeks before the awards. Greg was very proud of his 

daughter, Melissa Cowen, and what she has achieved 

with breeding, owning and exhibiting her 2007-2008 

High Point Paint junior gelding winner “Shanghai Kid”. 

The Greg Boon Overall High Point Horse perpetual 

award has now been dedicated to Greg, and named 

in his honour. This award was presented to the 

2007-2008 winner by Greg’s wife, June. 

While the impact of E.I. was felt early in the season, 

with many shows being postponed, or simply 

cancelled, there was no shortage of quality in the 

Paint horses being shown by all our members in the 

2007-2008 season. It was wonderful to see this new 

nationally affiliated Association receiving such support 

from its members and other equine clubs in its first 

season.

A NOTE TO SAY THANK YOU…. 

I would just like to say a big THANK YOU to the PHAA for 

my recent Tasmanian Overall High Point Paint Horse 

trophy. The PHAA sponsored and sent the most lovely 

sculptured Paint horse head study trophy. It was a lovely 

surprise to receive this at the recent inaugural 

Performance Paint Horse Association of Tasmania High 

Point Awards night. 

I was very proud of my yearling filly ‘S.L. Colonels 

Supermodel’ (9969) for not only winning this lovely trophy, but 

for also the other awards we were fortunate enough to be 

presented with. 

Elle is my first Paint horse registered with the PHAA and my first 

season of showing a PHAA registered Paint horse. I now have a 

second registered Paint filly, ‘S.L. Playin in the Sun’ (10219) 

and can only hope Venus will follow in Elle’s quite substantial 

and successful hoofprints. Thank you to all who have helped 

me in this journey…..it is only the beginning…..

sThe Paint Horse Association of Australia recently conducted 

its annual National Championship Show from 5th August to 

Sunday 10th August, 2008 at Dubbo Showground. 

SOME of our members may have had reservations 

about the running of this event at this time. I believe after 

all things considered the time that the PHAA Board decided 

to conduct this event was the most practical from the 

majority of our normal show participants and with the promoting and showing their 

numbers that supported the National Show of 

approximately 180 horses I believe the results suggest this. 

We were privileged once again to have two highly 

credentialed and experienced International Judges, Trisha 

Shorten-Armstrong and Sherry Haynes, both of these 

ladies have made their life around the horse industry and 

that to me is an indicator of the passion they have for the 

good of the western horse industry. This was reflected in 

their judging results with the majority of their results being 

comparable. Once again I believe the PHAA will be 

seeking judges of this calibre for the 2009 National Show.

Show 

Horse numbers were still very good with approximately 180 

horses attending which was more than I had anticipated, 

under the circumstances that were set before us. This 

shows that our PHAA show people are still committed to 

Paint Horses under unusual 

circumstances. 

We were privileged 

once again to have 

two highly credentialed 

and experienced 

International Judges 

The Futurities were 

reasonably well supported 

and some of the stand out 

performances were weanling 

futurity winner, ‘Our Incredible 

Story’ by ‘Intensity’ (imp) out 

of ‘Incredibly Shameless’, 

owned by Helen Golchert and Briana Shepperd and shown 

by Reece Burchell for Robert Brumm. This horse received

Show 

$2,264.00 for winning this event and also went on to 

win Grand Champion Stallion or Colt and won the 

Youth Incentive Sires Classic Weanling Futurity 

paying $927.00. The 2 Year Old and Over Halter 

Futurity went to ‘Sweet Justice’ owned by Hallmark 

Farm shown by Jeffrey Hall receiving $748.00 and 

also went on to win Grand Champion Mare or Filly 

and Supreme Champion Amateur Owner Exhibit 

shown by Lee Ann Hall. 

In the performance events Counthekash, a 

gelding owned by William Hupp and ridden by Carolyn 

Johnson won the 2 year Old Trail Futurity, 2 Year Old 

Hunter Under Saddle Futurity and the 2 Year Old Western 

Pleasure Futurity. A 3 year old gelding called 

‘Exceptional One’ owned by Van & Sue Sparkman ridden 

by Kristy Mobberley won the Open Hunter In Hand 

Futurity, 3 Year Old Trail Futurity, 3 Year Old Hunter Under 

Saddle Futurity and placed second in the 3 Year Old 

Western Pleasure Futurity.

Some of the other mentionable events outside the 

ring, for the third year in a row Jeffrey and Lee Ann Hall 

have once again shown their commitment to the good 

experience of our members attending the National Show. 

Conducting their Texas BBQ Chilli Cook Up with choices 

of smoked and BBQ meat and other side dishes as well. 

Some liquid refreshments, all you can drink to wash it 

down. Gold coin donation was received and funds raised 

were approximately $500.00 which go to the PHAA Youth 

Development Fund. To follow on, the Goods and 

Services Auction is starting to become a tradition not only 

for raising money for the PHAA Building Fund and Youth 

Development Fund but for the entertainment value it 

provides. This event brings out some hidden characters 

with the bidding competition at peak levels, a big thank 

you to Graham Thornton our resident auctioneer for the 

usual style he brings to the night by encouraging the 

bidding. To all of our members that contributed Goods or 

Services to this night you have collectively made a great 

deal of difference and a sincere thank you from myself. 

The PHAA National Show is a tradition with our 

members who usually take holidays to attend and be a 

part of the show and this show was no different. It was 

good to see a lot of new members come along and have 

a go and sometimes step outside their comfort zones to 

compete. A new family that participated for the first time

was the Hill Family. They purchased a gelding called Ima 

Special Jet approximately 2 weeks before the National 

Show and joined our PHAA membership. With James 

and Emily sharing the horse between Junior and Senior 

Youth Classes, both of them managing to get up in the 

places for their first PHAA National Show and they always 

seem to come out of the show ring with a smile on their 

faces. To see these experiences makes my participation 

in the management of the National Show a worthwhile 

one. 

Another important event was the presentation of the 

Belinda Abbott Memorial Trophy to Jack Abbott, Belinda’s 

father. The Belinda Abbott memorial trophy was awarded 

in the past 9 years to the winner of the National Weanling 

Halter Futurity and now with the time past for this event 

was presented to Jack for safe keeping and remembrance 

of the commitment Belinda made to the Paint Horse 

Association Of Australia. Pascale Benoit assisted in this 

presentation and in the remembrance of Belinda Abbott 

with some back ground stories and commentary. This 

truly was a solemn occasion. 

The show management team worked well and rose to 

the challenges when they needed to. It was good to have 

Don Northey as Arena Manager a new addition to the 

management. Carol Gleeson who was always easy to get 

along with made an extraordinary effort with the help of 

Ron Gleeson prior to the show behind the scenes to 

assist in obtaining necessary information from the PHAA 

Office to run the show. My appreciation goes to all people 

that assisted in the running of the National Show which

SOME THOUGHTS ON THE SHOW

JUDGING your National Show was definitely an honor 

as a judge, you have a beautiful country and amazing 

people. Everywhere we went the people of Australia 

where friendly and gracious. Having been to your country 

in April of 2006 at your State Show I had some idea of 

how things would run. Although the National Show was run 

much more effectively. The quality of the horses especially 

the Halter horses have really improved. Preparing horses 

for a winter show is difficult in any country. 

In the USA our horses are more confined to their box stalls and 

kept under lights from 6:30 am to 10:30pm which of course tricks 

their bodies into thinking it is summer all year round. Most people 

use timers to turn the lights on an off. Some suggestions for 

Australians (whom I was told give their horses more free exercise) 

might be to turn them out early morning or late afternoon to avoid 

the hottest part of the day where the sun can bleach their coats or 

sun burn a paints pink nose. Teaching your weanlings the meaning 

of " Whoa" is one of the most important things to do. "Whoa" means 

"Whoa" and not well maybe I'll just walk on a little bit more. Also 

teaching the weaning to respect "your" space and not to enter into 

it without permission is a big help in teaching a halter horse to 

stand and set up. Do not be intimidated by the judges and walk your 

horse straight to them as they want to see how the horse tracks not 

the handler. Practice showing your horses teeth at home. 

Separating the top and bottom lips to expose the horses bite. The 

judges are looking for an over or under bite. (One bit of advice- 

When using a twitch on your horse put it on slowly gradually 

tightening it to only the amount of pressure needed to clip the ears 

or bridle path. And when taking it off, hold on to the nose with your 

other hand and slowly open your hand and start rubbing the nose 

with your hand , then part the lips several times as if you are 

showing a judge your horses teeth. This will help a lot when you are 

in the show pen) Trot your horses straight away from the judges and 

make a sharp left or right turn at the cone.(We want to see if your 

horse is sound on the profile trot.) Line up as instructed. Try to get 

your horse broke to set up off the halter. 

A good way to start training on this is -Teach Whoa First- Stop 

your horse squarely in the line up (best to do homework before 

show)- Turn to face your horse and move his legs forward or back 

to set the right hind leg square under his body(the hind leg on your 

right hand side as you face him) Then rock your horses left hind 

leg(again facing him) forward and back moving him diagonally thru 

his shoulder until you have it even with the right and square under 

his body. Now here comes that all important WHOA. Hold your hand 

thru the chain under his chin and hold his head slightly forward all 

the time repeating Whoa (This keeps them from taking a step 

backwards as you set the front feet.) Put your right hand over their 

withers (On a foal you can almost put it on their shoulder) Pull them 

slightly to you taking the weight off their off foot and use your right 

foot at the font to move the foot back on the inside to move to away 

from you, on the back of the hoof to move it forward. Soon you will 

be able to move their foot even an inch if needed. Keep your cues 

consistent each time. Then for the near front foot touch them on the 

side of the shoulder with an open hand to take the weight slightly 

off the foot and use the same cues to position the foot. BE Patient! Be 

happy with a little more perfection each lesson. Try to reward them 

with praise each time any remember when teaching something 

new progress a little at each lesson and always put them up on a 

good note rather than a fight. 

Setting your horses up off the halter gives the judges a lot more 

time to look at your animal. (Plus some judges are impatient on 

those horse who will not stand and will award the prize to another) 

As a general rule if you pick up a hind leg on a horse he will step 

out with a front leg. You lose valuable time the judge needs to 

evaluate your animal. Make sure your halter fits your horse and is 

adjusted properly. It should fit right up under he protruding cheek 

bone and should be snug around the nose and jaw into the throat 

latch. The halter should be polished and clean, as well as the lead 

shank. Don't let your horse think the shank is his chew toy. Your lead 

should be held with the left hand in several medium size loops with 

the right hand held close to the beginning of the chain. The chain 

should be run trough the left halter ring ,under the chin ,through the 

right halter ring and up to the ring on the off side at the top of the 

cheek. (The horse should become accustom to the pressure of the 

chain "slowly" in his home environment to avoid pawing, rearing 

and striking) 

Your horse should be properly groomed and clipped before 

the show with his mane banded down to enhance his neck 

(Improper banding can actually add inches to a horses neck) Use 

an accent color if you want to show off a great neck and want the 

judges eye to go to the neck. Use the same color of bands as the 

mane if the horse neck is not his best attribute. Use baby gel or 

other commercial products to accent the eyes and sides of the 

nose.( Do not put oil on the white only dark areas as it attracts dust) 

Oil the insides of the ears for a finished look. (Another great reason 

"not" to ear down your horse!) 

Make sure your turned out in the same clean and polished 

manor as your horse. Boots shined ,hat clean and shaped properly, 

pants of the correct length. Your outfit does not have to come from 

an expensive Western store, just clean, neat and properly fitted to 

your body type. Great deals can be found at department stores for 

men and women alike on jackets ,blazers and suit coats. Don't 

overdo the "Bling". Most judges do not care for all the ""glitz" and it 

can take away from your horse. 

Remember to there are no perfect horses or people. Show off 

your horses best qualities and present him with confidence. You 

have to believe he is the best animal in the pen and convey that to 

the judge. But remember there are allot of ways of winning. 

Sometimes it is just getting the nerve to show, maybe just getting 

your horse to a show is an accomplishment or maybe having a 

show in Australia in the winter after months of quarantine is a "win" 

especially with the great turnout you all had. Take encouragement 

from the little things and keep setting goals for yourselves. Be a 

gracious winner and loser. Congratulate the other contestants for 

their wins and thank the judges when you win. (Trust me Judges 

remember those kind of things). Keep up the progress and have a 

great fun showing and remember winning the "Buckle" won't get

AQHA AMNESTY... 

DEAR PAINT HORSE MEMBERS, 

I am glad to report that at the recent AQHA board meeting, the directors resolved to approve 

an Amnesty on registrations which will come into effect on the 1st of August, 2008 and expire 

on the 31st of May, 2009. 

The last amnesty that AQHA had 

was some 10 or so years ago and they 

do not happen very often so I urge 

everybody with eligible horses to take 

advantage of this offer within the 

specified time frame to bring your 

registrations up to date. This means 

that if you have a seven year old horse 

which has never been registered with 

AQHA for one reason or another you 

may now apply for registration without 

paying late lodgement fees. 

Under the Amnesty, Registration 

applications for all eligible horses under 

the Rules & Regulations will be 

accepted at the Due Date fee of $120 

including GST and Stallion Returns for 

all eligible stallions will be accepted at 

the Due Date fee of $17 including GST 

which means in both cases that no 

penalty fees will be applied during the 

term of the Amnesty. 

Please note that this offer finishes 

without exception for all registration 

applications and Stallion Returns post 

marked up until the 31st of May, 2009. 

To make things easier for members 

AQHA is about to launch its online 

Stallion Return feature for services to 

AQHA mares on our website so 

stallion owners can just log on and 

lodge and pay for their returns by 

credit card so keep an eye on the 

website for details. 

With the increasing interest in the 

resurgence of Sprint Racing in Australia 

and many enthusiasts excited with the 

positive moves forward, many owners 

of sprint horses will be able to bring 

their horses up to date so that they can 

get the recognition they deserve. 

Even though the introduction of 

DNA and parent verification into the 

registry process was advertised well and 

truly prior to the date that it was 

introduced, some members still failed 

to get some of their older mares or 

stallions DNA typed and this has lead 

to some horses which would have had 

Q numbers under the pre-DNA system 

being given an AX registration status. 

In many cases, these horses had a 

parent die without having its DNA 

type done. 

Also, as part of the Amnesty the 

progeny of horses foaled prior to 1 

January 1989 will be accepted on their 

own merits. 

What this now means is that the 

AQHA will do a search and members 

or owners of horses which have been 

affected due to a deceased parent will 

be contacted by AQHA. 

Again, please remember that the 

Amnesty will end without exception 

on the 31st May, 2009. 

By taking advantage of the Amnesty 

and bringing their registrations up to 

date with AQHA, members wishing to 

register their eligible horses with 

AmQHA can then take advantage of 

the special International Affiliate rate 

of US$25 which is only available 

through AQHA as the American 

Affiliate. 

Remember, The Australian Quarter 

Horse Association is THE American 

Quarter Horse Association affiliate in 

Australia and if members need help 

with registering their horses with the 

American Association, please contact 

us – we don’t charge any extra! 

Shortly, members will be able to just 

tick a box on the Australian 

Application for Registration if they also 

want their horse registered in America 

and we will automatically send them 

the application form to fill in and 

return it to us with the applicable fee 

which is US$25 regardless of the age 

the horse. We will then lodge this on 

your behalf with the AmQHA. 

For those of you registering your 

horses with AQHA this year, please 

remember that the earlier you register 

your horses, the sooner you will get 

your papers back. Things which can 

cause delays in getting your 

registrations back to you are delays in 

the member getting the hair samples to 

the Uni and the failure to get the pink 

DNA ID Certificate back to AQHA 

quickly after the hair samples are 

taken. This applies just as much to the 

parent mares as it does to the foals. 

AQHA anticipates that there will be 

a lot of members taking advantage of 

the Amnesty and that as a result there 

will be a considerable increase in the 

volume of work to be done in the office 

which may create some delays but rest 

assured we have made some changes to 

the processes that should see any delays 

minimized. 

In closing, a final reminder to all 

breeding stallion owners. In putting in 

place our HERDA rules last year, all 

breeding stallions must have the results 

of their HERDA test on file with 

AQHA by 31 July 2008 otherwise the 

stallion will be suspended until the 

result is in place. HERDA testing kits 

are available from the office for $55 

including GST and it will take around 

two weeks for the results to come back 

so if you haven’t tested your stallion yet 

and you want to use him this year you 

better get cracking because time is 

running out.
