Apache’s little splinter
Normally we award a “Horse’s Arse Award” for the best fall of the season. This
year we also awarded a “Pain in the Arse Award” to Rocky Bar RU Apache.
One Tuesday we had a huge storm
go through the district and late
that night when Cathy Bornholm
went to feed her horses, Apache
was missing. Her first thoughts
were “ Oh No. He’s out again”
because he is always first to the
feed bin. She found
him in the paddock
reluctant to move.
When she got him
up to the stables she
could see he had a
wound close his
sheath. The wound
was cleaned and
nothing could be felt
in the wound. He
swelled up as you would expect
and appeared to be recovering.
However on the weekend he
started to drip a little gunk from
the wound and appeared to be a
bit sorer. He was taken
to the vet on Monday
and after poking up in
the wound, they could
feel something and so
the forceps were used
to remove the object.
What a size – one very lucky horse!
Our eyes nearly popped out of
our heads when we saw what was
coming out. The vets were amazed
that it had not hit something vital
as it was way up high in between
Cleaning the wound – that’s what friends are for.
his legs. One very lucky horse. We
are guessing he trod on a branch
and this broke off. Apache was
happy to let Barcoo, the German
Shepherd clean the wound up
everyday and now you can’t even
tell where it was.
