this can be a great option. It’ll take some pressure <strong>of</strong>f,<br />

giving you some much-needed time to put into some<br />

<strong>of</strong> the other things you need to focus on for the coming<br />

show year. You may also wish to start the New Year<br />

<strong>of</strong>f with some tune up lessons for both you and your<br />

horse. Whatever you decide to do, it all adds up to<br />

sensible preparation for horse and rider.<br />

Tack<br />

Ideally you keep your tack and show gear correctly<br />

stored, clean and dry. Take out all your tack and check<br />

each item for wear and tear. Organise for any items<br />

to be repaired if they need it. Clean and condition the<br />

leather, polish silver and bag each one ready for travel.<br />

Check and, if necessary, clean all leg boots and training<br />

gear. Check your show pads for built-up dirt, grime,<br />

seeds and prickles. Wash them if they need it. When<br />

packing for shows be sure to pack a couple <strong>of</strong> extra<br />

bridles, reins, halters and bits.<br />

Grooming Box<br />

Replace grooming tools or brushes that have gone<br />

past their use by date and check that any towels or<br />

grooming cloths you’ve used are washed or replaced.<br />

Re-stock your horse shampoo, conditioning and groo -<br />

ming products and fly repellent. Make sure to buy a<br />

white coat brightening product and some ho<strong>of</strong> black<br />

or clear gloss. Have your clippers been cleaned since<br />

the last time they were used? Remove the clipper<br />

blades and send them away to have them sharpened.<br />

Oil them and store them with the grooming box.<br />

Show Clothes<br />

Check all <strong>of</strong> your show clothes. Do any have broken<br />

stitching, stains or missing buttons and studs? Have<br />

them mended or DIY. If you need to send anything<br />

to the dry cleaners, do so early. Check your chaps<br />

for any buckle, zipper or stitching problems.<br />

Check, clean and re-shape hats and store in a hatbox<br />

ready to pack. Clean and polish all silver, accessories<br />

such as show jewellery and all boots and spurs. If you<br />

need to order any clothes or accessories for any <strong>of</strong><br />

the major shows, do so early so that you aren’t disappointed.<br />

Camping<br />

Are you set up to stay overnight at a show? Get yourself<br />

organised early. Make sure you have all the basics<br />

Fresh new colours for the upcoming show season<br />

for a comfortable overnight stay. Make a list <strong>of</strong> required<br />

camping items and use it every time.<br />

Knowing that you’re fully prepared for the year will<br />

now leave your mind free to concentrate on the job at<br />

hand. That is, showing and enjoying your <strong>Paint</strong> <strong>Horse</strong>s.<br />
